OPEN IT EMPLOYEES TREAT THEIR SPONSORED CHILDREN TO AN AFTERNOON OF FUN AND GAMES It is always a special occasion when World Vision child sponsors meet their sponsored children, and so it was on November 25 when employees of Open iT prepared a day of fun and games for their sponsored children from Batangas. They began with a full meal at Kenny Rogers, after which each employee presented a noche buena pack and a personal Christmas gift to their sponsored child. They also played some games which the children thoroughly enjoyed. After the games came the highlight of the day – a whole afternoon spent inside Sky Ranch, where the children with their Open iT Ates and Kuyas were thrilled by the many exciting rides and attractions. As they bid goodbye to one another at the end of the day, each came home with fuller hearts and wonderful memories to cherish.

EDUCATION KYOCERA CULTURE OF READING In one of the barangays in the municipality of Compostela, Cebu, lies a small center the villagers call their Reading Center. Each barangay is required to build their reading center as mandated by the Republic Act 7743. With the partnership of World Vision and Kyocera Community Relations Club, Purok Anahaw of barangay Bagalnga has become successful and effective in their reading centers. Every Sunday, at three o’clock in the afternoon, children would gather in the learning and reading centers. At the average, 20 kids join the weekly activity. Some of these kids are World Vision-sponsored. Among them is Jasmine. Jasmine is a 10-year old girl and a Grade 4 student.

Upon arriving at the visitors are

their reading center, what welcome Jasmine’s drawings on the board.

“Even when she was still young, she already loves to read,” says her mother. Unlike other kids, Jasmine is observed as a slow learner. At school, she would often go straight home without telling her teacher. Her parents would come find her as she wanders. Although Jasmine may have seem to be beyond normal, she isn’t beyond in everything. She is a consistent honor student and was always awarded as the Best in Art and Best in Reading. She is the youngest among seven and she was born when her mother was 37. Unlike most kids, Jasmine prefers reading and drawing than playing which the adults find odd. She is not the typical girl who plays, sings, and dance. Instead, she draws and reads.

Seeing her the first time, you’d think she is just like one of those girls but when you get to talk to her you could see something different. Through the reading centers, Jasmine discovered her passion for reading which does not negate her from the rest of the crowd. World Vision, in partnership with DepEd and the local government, was able to intervene in their once resourcefew reading centers. World Vision gave big books which the children enjoyed, and Jasmine was one of the avid readers. As she reads, she draws the characters and pictures that she sees in the books.

BPI GIVES A BETTER FUTURE Last year, BPI and World Vision partnered to launch Give a Better Future, an initiative which encouraged BPI credit card users to support World Vision’s back to school program Lead A Child. As of December 2017, the campaign with BPI has raised over Php100,000 covering nearly 200 children with Learners’ Kits and school bags.

Thanks to the centers, Jasmine finds her niche and develops her passion for reading and drawing. Jasmine may have belonged and inherited the culture of reading.

P&G has been a consistent supporter of World Vision, especially during emergency response where they provide hygiene kits to people affected by disasters. In addition to this, P&G’s gifts-in-kind helped World Vision promote the importance of cleanliness and proper hygiene among children. Last November 2017, World Vision turned over hand washing facilities to two public elementary schools in Camarines Norte, namely the Jose Panganiban Elementary School with 2,201 students, and Roman Geraldo Elementary School with 512 students. Students received hand soaps and toothbrush and were reminded of proper hygiene practices.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT A PARTNERSHIP WITH SENATE EMPLOYEES MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE When World Vision started its work in Laurel, Batangas in 2012, one of its goals was to empower families and households to be able to provide for the basic needs of their children. From the community consultations of the previous years, most families in Laurel lamented the lack of financial capacity to augment their income or start a business. Consistent with a research done in 2009, the municipality of Laurel had the highest incidence rate of households in Batangas whose income was below the poverty threshold. In partnership with the Senate Employees Multipurpose Cooperative(SEMCO), the families of Laurel were provided a livelihood opportunity through the distribution of livestock, as part of World Vision’s economic development program in Batangas. Dannah Racel Sonio is just one of the beneficiaries of the Kapit-Babuyan project. “Malaki po ang naitulong ng KapitBabuyan sa aking pamilya,” Nanay Dannah shared.

SEMCO’s donation contributed to the Kapit-babuyan project which to date has provided 225 piglets to 45 families in 5 barangays in Laurel.

HELPING FAMILIES IN MARAWI RESTORE AND EMPOWER COMMUNITIES THROUGH LIVELIHOOD ACCESS IN MARAWI (RECLAIM) Since last year, World Vision’s emergency response in Marawi has assisted over 5000 families who received hygiene kits, mosquito nets, fleece blankets, drinking water, school kits, temporary learning spaces, child-friendly spaces, and breastfeeding kits among others. Thanks to the many generous partners who made this all possible through their cash donations and support.

Following the Philippine government’s announcement last October 23, 2017 that the armed conflict in Marawi City has virtually ended, the challenge remains for the thousands of people affected and displaced by the fightings. Results from a World Vision-led post-conflict assessment showed that most internally displaced people (IDPs) are clamoring for access to both life-saving aid and livelihood assistance to recover their means of income and small businesses.

Through this initiative and with the help of various partners, we reached a total of 1,440 children through 14 child-friendly spaces.

AMCHAM FOUNDATION HELPS REBUILD MARAWI CITY As the smoke clears in the city of Marawi, the rubble and debris are what’s left after the siege of the city has finally ended. With World Vision’s appeal to complement the government efforts to rebuild the lives of the people coping from the crisis, one of the first ones to heed the call was the American Chamber Foundation Philippines, Inc., or AmCham Foundation. As a consistent partner of World Vision in times of disaster response, AmCham Foundation responded to the call and pledged their support for the thousands of families affected. Headed by AmCham Foundation Executive Director Jun Salipsip and their Development Manager Lily Balomaga, World Vision Resource Development Director Jun Godornes received the initial donation from AmCham Foundation which hopes to jumpstart the program that World Vision intends to implement through the creation of livelihood opportunities in selected barangays in Marawi.
