Editor’s

Letter What a year it is has been! This year has included the excitement of Thingyan, the horror of the floods, the inspiring commitment of the relief efforts and the nail biting drama of the elections. After such a frenzy, December seems like a well earned break, and in that vein we have placed a travel theme in this issue. In December we take a look at trekking in the mountains, day trips from Yangon and even an outside artist’s perception of Yangon and the Golden Land. It is also impossible to omit Christmas and New Year as stand out celebrations in December and inside is a quick list of where to go and celebrate these joyous events in Yangon. What happens after New Year? This editor is out of opinions but full of optimism. Hold on Yangon, what is about to occur has only just begun.

ocated on the southeastern part of Yangon, Pazundaung Township was the eastern most part of the original city plan laid out by the British. Somewhat tucked away and forgotten, Pazundaung is the main route between Downtown, Mingalar Taung Nyunt and Dawbon Townships and as such is often passed by. It does however, hold a few little gems and if you are looking for the convenience of downtown without so much of the bustle, it is the perfect spot. The Yangon City Development Committee has designated a few choice buildings as landmarks and there are the focal shopping hubs of Pazundaung Market and Yea Kyaw Market. So if you want to experience a section of Yangon that will seem familiar yet unexplored, step out and experience Pazundaung.

Maung Aye Café Maung Aye Cafe is famous for its Tea and small Samosas. As well as a small bakery in the evenings, the street outside turns into a BBQ restaurant that has some traditional footstalls attached. The Café is so popular that it is well-known across the city. Golden City Chetty Restaurant There are a few branches of this restaurant in Yangon, and the branch in Pazundaung Township is very much in the same mould as the others – Cheap and tastey southern Indian food. A meal is unlikely to cost you over 2500 Kyats and is served promptly. (6am to 9pm)

Interview with a

Fair Ground Traveller Singing a Song During a Trip I live with my parents and younger sister at a home built up with bamboo walls and a leaf roof. I eat meals with my family when it rains outside. It’s really cool to have a meal with all the family members even though the meal is not good. As you know, we are not rich and we can’t eat good food like rich people. Our family conversation is accompanied by eating tea leaf salad made by my mom and which is really amazing. Sometimes I go fishing in the fields in the Hlaing Thar Yar Region and sometimes I work as spare man on the bus driven by Ko Sein Maung who lives at Mee Kwat Zey. My younger sister will be 5 next year. So I have to work hard and save money so we can afford to send her to school. “Hey Mhway Ni… Get ready!! Tonight is festival Night, so you will be busy” It’s the voice of Ko Kyaw Gyi. When I hear that I run out of my house and go to work with Ko Kyaw Gyi. Now it’s the festival time so I work as a guy who builds and works a Ferris wheel (which is man-powered) and watch the customers.

Written by Sithu Lin Latt Translation by Nwe Ni Mar Lay

There are 16 seats on the Ferris wheel and its height is about 30 feet. I started working with them last year. We travel around to the places where the pwe zey (festival) is celebrated so I have been to many villages and cities. I can save the money I get because I am provided with a place to stay and I don’t have to worry about meals. When we travel from one place to another to catch up with the pwe zey, we have to drive a long time so I can see amazing views of Myanmar and I sing songs during our journey. I am so happy and I really love my job.

you know my job is very dangerous and the happy faces of my customers give me the strength to work well.

It is exciting to hang from and power the Ferris wheel. Our Ferris wheel is a small one so my job is to make the wheel go faster and faster. I am really glad to see the customers happy faces and hear them shouting whilst riding our wheel. The most joyful times are when beautiful girls who are the same age as me, look at me with pleasant eyes. As

In the morning, our crew will go to Twantay Pagoda Festival. We will pick things up and have to go to a new place. We will go to Twantay across many fields singing songs. This is life and I really enjoy it. I have to work hard for my future and I believe one day I will get a better and beautiful life. I think I can buy the new school uniform for my sister soon.

Tonight is the last day of the pwe zey so we will finish our job at 2 am. There are plays and state shows at the pwe zey. I always hear their voices, but I can’t go and watch because of my work. Like the other people I want to walk the pwe zey with my family and watch the shows the whole night. One day my dream will come true.

angonites and tourists alike both know the circle train; a three hour snail paced crawl around central and suburban Yangon. Whether for public transport or to see “the real Yangon,” the circle train is host to thousands every day. Most ride the train to either reach a specific destination or do the three hour loop uninterrupted. But if you’ve ever wondered about what you could find if you simply got off and looked around for a while, then this guide is for you. Given the sheer size and scale of the circle line this guide should not be considered comprehensive – how could it be? Rather, our purpose is to highlight some of the treasures dotted along the way as well as to encourage you to explore and make discoveries of your own. Some of these attractions may already be known to you, some not, but we hope you can use this guide to find something new and add a bit of adventure to your next loop on the circuit.

For the sake of simplicity we’ve done the loop clockwise (it should be noted that the train can depart in both directions). If you plan to bring a bicycle – and we recommend you do – you can only bring it on board the older trains. These depart at: 8.20am; 11.30am; 11:50am. MYyangon _ issue 16

Providing Learning Materials to Myanmar Children Written by Nwe Ni Mar Lay Developing the education system and community plays an important part in removing poverty. Lots of children in Asia-Pacific Region can’t afford education materials because of economic circumstances. Therefore, Japanese Companies, Fuji Xerox and Gakken Holdings made a joint partnership to set up a sustainable social contribution system. The first project, providing learning materials, started in the Philippines in 2014. Myanmar is the second country they have implemented their project. The aim of the project is to help resolve educational disparity by providing the learning materials for children. It is their thought that children are the treasure of the country so, they want to take part in developing the society of the country by improving the knowledge and talent of its children who will be the future of their nation. One of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Communication policies of Fuji Xerox, a leading company in the document service and communication field, is helping to tutor children in disadvantaged societis by donating learning 18

materials. The responsibility of managing this project as a whole lies with Fuji Xerox Company. Gakken Holdings Co. Ltd which is one of the leading educational companies in Japan is responsible for translating the mathematical contents of a workbook administrated by Mr. Hideo Kageyama (Educator and professor of teaching and learning institute,Ritsumeikan University) into a Myanmar version. But the printing process is provided by the Xenon Company (premier partner of Fuji Xerox in Myanmar) by using Fuji Xerox technology. In Myanmar, as a first step they plan to provide learning materials to children from elementary schools living in the suburbs of Yangon. They held a presentation about their project in Myanmar in Yangon on June 3, 2015 and many students and government ministers attended and participated in this ceremony. After making the presentation, they donated mathematic workbooks to 110 students from the first and

second grade of No (1), Basic Educational Primary School, Hlaing Tharyar as the first step of project. Second step of their project was launched on the 22-23 September at BEHS, Si Pin Thar in Than Ta Pin Tsp. and Dhama Dipa Monastic School in Thanlyin Tsp. Self-study mathematic workbooks were sent to about 354 Grade 1, 2 and 3 students of those two schools from Yangon’s suburbs. They hope to deliver four kinds of workbook per child and monitor individual progress so, they can notice the learning and absorbing speeds of each child and provide what each child requires. In the future, Fuji Xerox wants to launch their project in many countries in the Asian-Pacific region by co-orporating with NGOs and many other companies. Yangon Trends

Written by Aye Chan Khaing, Translated by Mang Pi

Have you ever imagined reaching the mountains this winter? It is particularly hard to trek a mountain glacier. Trekking Tours to Mount Phongun, located on the eastern edge of Myanmar, for local budget travellers are planned for next year’s travel season. The trip will start from Putao and take 11 days. Anyone can participate in this trip, both men and women, but fitness is essential. The trips promote eco-tourism. What are the necessary things for this trip? Ko Kyaw Thu, one of the trekking guides, explains how to prepare and what kind of experience to expect. “You will walk 6 hours per day. We have to pass many mountains to get to the base of Mount Phongun. Foreign tourists enjoy this kind of adventure and feeling. We’ll fly to Putao and our team will fetch us there. From there, we’ll go to upper Shan Khaung village. We’ll have dinner there and spend the night. I’ll tell you the plans for tomorrow, and some dos and don’ts. Each person has to get a torch and keep it in his or

20

her bag. Warm clothes are needed. Each person has to carry their own medicines, warm clothing and a couple of gloves. The rest will be taken by the porters.” “We’ll depart from upper Shan Khaung village after the morning meal and begin the second day. On that day, we’ll climb Wa San Dan Mountain and Jade Mountain. 3 hours uphill and 3 hours downhill, it is a test of endurance. It’s a one day trip. We’ll have lunch somewhere on the Mountain. After that, we’ll go down again.” “Then we’ll get to a village called Wa San Dan. There, we’ll be able to

examine who can continue the trip. We’ll spend our night there. In the past, we had to cut our own path. But now, there is a clear path up to Shan Khaung Tree Camp (a way point on the trip from Shan Khaung Village to Wa San Dan Village). Apart from the mountain being a bit rugged, the uphill and downhill sections are not so hard. Only endurance is required.” “Next day, we’ll continue from Wa San Dan. We’ll arrive at Awadan Village at noon. We will have to pass a couple of mountains that lie between these two villages. Those villages are also set in beautiful landscapes. As we get into that area

we’ll be able to hear even the sound of water dropping from the streams. When we get to Awadan village we’ll take lunch and evaluate the situation. If it’s necessary, we’ll sleep there or we’ll continue to Ziyardan village in the late evening. Between these are two smaller villages we will pass by. If we have time, we’ll pay a visit to these villages. Ziyardan is the last village from Putao and we’ll sleep there. Based on how the travelers feel, if it’s necessary we’ll spend one night at Ziyardan Village on the day we arrive there.”

It’s an Adventure Trip, it is pretty clear who won’t make it by the third day of travel. We’ll leave them in safe hands and continue. The place will be foggy this season and the trip might take longer than expected. Nobody can stay on the mountain top more than two hours. Just the moment of the sunrise is fantastic. Soon after the sunrise, the cloud evaporates and fills the surrounding with fog.”

Starting to Travel Through the Forest “We’ll not bring any unnecessary things as we begin travelling through the forest from Ziyardan Village. Except for some essential things, we’ll leave all the rest at Ziyardan Village. We’ll leave Ziyardan village after the morning meal. From there, we’ll get to a place called “brookmeet” where the two brooks meet and join. We’ll have lunch there. It is a place loaded with a lot of stones and just a little water. After crossing carefully, we’ll get to a camp called “Khan Taut Myit”. If we continue our travel without taking rest, we’ll be able to spend the night at Lower Big Tree Village. After taking rest there, we’ll get past Upper Big Tree Village by the next morning. Then we’ll arrive to our last camp, Yee Khe Set. After the morning meal, we’ll begin trekking the mountain glacier leaving our cooks and some of those who are unable to continue. We’ll go by the hillside. We’ll see some strange mountains such as thorny mountain as well as mountains full of flowers. Some are just filled with firs. You need to have clever eyes to see these. If you get too exhausted you’ll miss them”, said Ko Kyaw Thu. “As the trekking continues, endurance becomes the biggest issue. Even your bag and camera @ MYYangon

become heavy burdens. But you’ll enjoy when you get to the mountain peak. The path is clear enough up to Big Tree Village. After that the path will be wild. Sometimes you have to climb, sometimes we’ll take tracks, but all are safe paths. Mount Phongun is the easiest one to climb. If we finish trekking this mountain, the rest will become quite easy to climb”, elaborates Ko Kyaw Thu. Ko Moe Aung, the one who planned this trip and Managing Director of Travel Expert Co.,Ltd, continues, “For the time being,

we’re cooperating with the villagers by helping to build infrastructure. Recently so many travelers have visited Putao. Everything goes well because the Base Camps are already there. To start a trip, you’ll need at least five members. Somethings need to be explained before starting a trip. There is no fixed departure time, it is a private Trip.” Concerning what to take, he says, “Travelers have to buy all the necessary personal gear such as bags and boots. Trekking equipment and local guides are already there and there is no charge for them. The message I would like to give travellers is that the bag’s weight he or she brings is important. It is not a good idea to bring so many things. One bag for two persons is quite enough.” “The primary need is trekking shoes and you need to bring warm ones. Then you need warm clothes.

Meet

Ma Darle Managing Director Tour De Myanmar Co.,Ltd

Written by Aye Chan Khaing, Translated by Nwe Ni Mar Lay May I know how you started your business? I worked in the travel & tour business for a long time. My hobby is travelling around so I wanted to make a travelling business. That’s why I started 7 Day Travel & Tour business firstly in the form of In Bound business for foreigners who want to see the beauty of Myanmar. Later, I made Tour De Myanmar, Outbound Business, for Myanmar people who want to travel around the world. I registered Tour De Myanmar in 2008.

What kind of difficulties or struggles did you face when you started Tour De Myanmar? Actually, inbound business generates more income than outbound because the spending power of foreigners is much more than Myanmar people who travel to foreign countries. In general, foreigners want to use more money for watching or learning the culture of other countries than Myanmar people. For inbound business, all operations are in Myanmar so it’s all in my hands and it’s very easy to handle. I can give 100% guarantee for tourists safety and easy living in Myanmar. But for outbound, there are some difficulties and complexities. As you know, our company is a service firm so we have to make the best strategies and plans to give our customers the best services. The reason I made Tour De Myanmar (outbound) was for my customers to travel without any difficulties and safely. We are connected to

32

the relevant travel agents from related countries. We always check the company’s performance and those companies always contact us regarding their activities and difficulties. So we can handle those problems on the spot. If you want to travel, it will cost and there is also the Visa problem. We will bring our customers to the highlight spots of the country being visited. Therefore, we always give advice, the best explanation and best the services to our customers when they travel abroad.

What kind of challenges and risks did you get? Outbound tours are more risky. This is a group tour so we have to buy at least 20 or 30 air-tickets and pay the deposit. If we don’t get enough people, we will lose our deposit money for the air-tickets. It is the first risk I get for planning the tour. The second risk is a visa thing. We need lots of papers and papers to show evidence of financial stability. Some countries embassies check so many things for a visa, for example - the background, business connections, etc. but from the customers side, I understand, to show these things to strangers is a little upsetting and they worry about it. My job is to explain things well and quickly. We have to keep customers’ papers safe. This is one of the risks for the company.

Is there any tour plan now? Yes, there are some tours for December such as to Dubai, Korea, Japan, Bangkok, Singapore,

Hong Kong and Macao. I cancelled the plans for European tour because of some problems and also the terrorists attack in Paris and other countries. I will plan this tour after the Water Festival.

What are the difficulties of being a business woman? I never think that females will get more or less chances because of gender, that kind of thinking is prejudice. Success or failures are measured by talent, hard work and fate. I think the travel & tour business matches with females because in this kind of work you need to be patient. In my opinion women are more patient than men and women are more interested in communicating with people.

Meet

But there are so many successful men working in this business too.

to do family wise. But I am never absent from my house wife work or a daughter’s work because of my business. I fix everything by myself well.

What is your leadership style? There are many staff in my company and they are all like my family and I think they are my colleagues not my staff. I always stay close to them so there is no one who worries or is afraid to talk to me. I always share my knowledge and experiences with them and always negotiate with them.

Now have you reached your target? And is this business your dream?

How do you balance your personal life and work?

What is your advice for young people and who want to start new business?

I have no kids and my husband and my parents are my only family, so I don’t have so many things @ MYYangon

Yes. I like my business and I love to communicate with people and I really love to travel. So, I can say I have reached my goal. But I want to do more things.

I think the most important thing is confidence.

Never give up if you want to do something and trust yourself. I got the idea to start Tour De when I went to Thailand and attended travel exhibitions. When I arrived to Bangkok, there was a girl who picked up me at the airport and she explained about Thailand, their culture and traditions. I really liked her profession and I believed that one day I will be a professional like her. Now I have reached my goal so believe in yourself and do what you want.

If you’ve ever spent two hours with Olaf Van Cleef you’ll appreciate that it is a roller coaster ride of energy and emotion. I feel like I’ve had a very strange and intense multi-coloured, shiny dream, and as I leave his suite at the Sule ShangriLa, I realize I didn’t even get to ask him a single interview question on my list (he never gave me the chance) and I was only meant to be there for thirty minutes. You may not have heard of the Paris based Dutch @ MYYangon

MY Yangon Magazine

artist Olaf Van Cleef, and to be honest, apart from some last minute googling, neither had I. In his heavily accentuated French accent, the kind that starts the word ‘Art’ at the back of the throat, and makes me think that I might have always been saying ‘unique’ incorrectly, he tells me his story. The family name Van Cleef is synonymous with diamonds, and after 32 years as an ambassador for Cartier, Olaf (please call me Olaf) is now retired and relaxed, and has no need to ever work again.

Art, he explains, is his opportunity to explore and to learn, and to share his particular view of the world. Each of his meticulously prepared paintings takes between 100 and 300 hours to produce, and as an insomniac, he has made the most of his affliction by utilising the night time hours to be creative. His paintings come alive under the spotlight, and in the depths of the night, engrossed in his efforts he meditates on life.

35

If you do not look, you see nothing. He holds me with his glittering eye like the Ancient Mariner, before leaping from his seat to retrieve a small intricate painting of Vishnu. A background wash of pale pastel colours gives a delicate hint upon which the intricate pen work of a million tiny black dots that make up the image of the Hindu God is based. The layers continue as details are picked out in gold, and then tiny Swarovski crystals are used to finish the piece. “It’s crazy,” he tells me “unique! It is a mix of European, Asia, modern and old.” He takes the heavy paper from my hands and moves it around, “See? This painting is not for putting on the wall behind the sofa to forget, it is something to experience new every time.”

Olaf tells me he has no desire to sell his paintings outside of the country he is working in. “The painting is of the country it should stay in the country, this is not a painting for Europe it is for Asia.” As the revenue he receives for selling his artwork is then in turn used within the country for supporting artists, he is redistributing income towards the young artists of the country, helping them to discover “their own way”. “I love the culture, I am very interested by the people, the history and the religion. And look around, this country is the ‘Golden Land’, it is perfect for my paintings!” Olaf has completed his investigative and immersive first trip to Myanmar, he has walked the streets, visited the temples, and will return several times to build his knowledge of the country that will influence his paintings and direct his work. Within two years he will have an exhibition of paintings worthy of display at an art gallery in Yangon. This is only the start; he hopes to build a long relationship with Myanmar.

As he moves the painting, I notice dots of white paint, so subtle that a camera wouldn’t capture them but under the lights of the room as the painting is moved around in front of my eyes, clever shadows cast by the minute almost invisible white dots appear, and as the crystals shine the painting comes alive for a second, changing from each angle. Now you might have noticed (as Olaf did) that I’m not an art expert, I’ve discovered I don’t have the vocabulary of an art critic, and am somewhat lacking in my arsenal of adjectives, there is only so many times you can say “ooh lovely”, but I was truly mesmerised by the paintings that were slowly pilling up on the table in front of me. They were peaceful, yet energetic, simple but very much ostentatious. It becomes evident in our discussion (for this was never an interview) that Olaf uses his art as an excuse to travel and to experience cultures and learn. His relationship with India is very real and honest, he is fascinated by the colours, and the mix of culture and religion and modernity, and has worked there for many years. Through the sale of his paintings he has been able to establish artist workshops that can be accessed by all, providing a space not only for creativity, but more importantly a place for artists to display their works. In Bhutan where he recently exhibited a collection of 57 paintings of the Buddha, (as part of the 60th birthday celebrations of the King-Father of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck) he also established a school to assist young artists. At the two-hour mark I managed to shake myself from the hypnotic experience as I had another appointment to get to, but I could have stayed there all day and listened to Olaf, and he would have gladly continued, so passionate is he about his art. As a parting piece he tells me of meeting a poor young artist in India who created beautiful paintings using only the dirt from the ground as paint and newspaper as his canvas. “I buy him materials, paint and paper” he tells me “the artist goes away and comes back with his paintings, they are totally ugly! I have ruined him, he has lost his art.” Olaf waves his hands. ‘I have to explain to him, forget the paints, go back to work with the ground.” Olaf looks me in the eyes, deadly serious, “Each artist has to find his own way.”

The Method of Beautification by Chin Women There is a story about Chin girls; centuries ago, the Burmese king heard about the attractiveness of Chin girls and sent soldiers to steal them from their home and bring them to the kings’ palace. Afterwards, the people in Chin discussed this problem and decided that all the women in the Chin region should have a permanent tattoo over their entire face to cover their attractive beauty. Because of this decision, Chin people could protect their girls from the marauding kings. Over time, the rituals of tattooing ones whole face become the tradition and beauty mark of Chin women. All the girls in Chin State would be tattooed between the ages of 11 to 15 years old. It would take over an hour to tattoo one face. They couldn’t choose the tattoo style and had to accept the style the tattoo artist made for them. But there are some different tattoo styles like Pa Mae; tattooing the entire face including the ears and eyelids, Pa Pyouk; black dots on the whole face, Pa Kyaung; putting eight lines on the cheeks, Pa Kyar; painting four-lines and four-spots on the face and the last one Pa Wine is drawing circles and lines on the face. The ink they used was made from plants and buffalo kidneys and then applied to the face with a hard pine tree bark needle. That habit is now not permitted by authorities for this generation of women.

The Beautiful Ornamentation of Karen People Karen People are a huge ethnic group in Myanmar mostly spread through southern and eastern part of the country. There are three main sub-group in Karen nationality: White Karen (Sgaw), Black Karen (Pa-O) and Red Karen (Kayan). Kayan (Red Karen) has many subgroups and among them, the long-necked women who wear brass coils around their necks, arms, and knees are called Kayan Lahwi. They are also known as Pa Daung. As mentioned above, Kayan women wear brass coils (made up with gold and brass alloy) around necks, arms, and knees from around 38

5 years old. Over time, as she gets older, more and more coils are added. The act of adding coils ends when the number of coils reaches over 25 - until the neck is about 10 inches (25 centimeters) They can’t remove these rings in any condition (exception; ring repairing) because over the years these rings become vital in supporting their head. The weight of brass pushes down their color bone and ribs, and due to the elongation, the muscles around their neck are not strong enough to support the head. Although their neck muscles are weak, removing coils won’t cause the neck to collapse, but they have to stay in bed when they remove them. A long time ago, Kayan people wore the coils for protection against tiger bites. But now they wear them only for beautification. Because an extra long neck is a symbol of great beauty and wealth, and can attract a better husband.

Silver ornaments wearing of BigEar Kayan There are also the Big-Ear Kayan ethnic groups. They are named “Big Ear” because they wear silver or metal rings and a mass of metal weights on the earlobe, making the ears larger and longer. Years ago, married women wore carved elephant tusk as earpieces. But now killing elephants for their tusk is illegal. So they make earpieces with silver, metal and wood. The culture of wearing tusk was only for married women and engaged girls, not for virgins. Virgins would wear metal rings to stretch their ears. They believe that wearing a carved tusk or metal rings is a sign of superb beauty and ethnic identity. Nowadays, there are many different styles of ornaments and little link with marital status.

Wear What Min Thet San

What do you think is most important for being smart and fashionable? I think choosing the right colour that will be a perfect match with your complexion is important for being smart. After that, the right design that will match with you is important. I usually create clothes that will make my clients feel free and good, and then the colour of my design will release their stress. I always advise my customers to choose the right colour and right design.

Which type of fashion designs are the best for winter? I prefer to wear winter fashion designs like long coats, sweaters, handmade scarfs, hats, gloves and boots. I would like to create these designs for my customers but they are not match with Yangon’s weather. If I’m in Kalaw or somewhere cold, I wear these types of winter clothes.

What will be the colour for the New Year?

What designs do you create the most?

I think, in this moment, people will prefer a nude colour or pale, instead of bright or bling-bling ones. The colours that are going to be used this coming New Year will not be specific they will be a blend, for example a pinky-red or bluey-grey. But as you know, different people like different colours. If my customers want a pink colour, I made a pink one but it’s not a real pink. You know there are many different pink colours – purple pink, milky pink etc. so I always create different designs and different colours for my customers.

I mostly create Myanmar traditional wedding dresses (Thai-Ma-Thein or Cheik). First, I check where the wedding will be celebrated and then I always make a colour and design that will match with the wedding place and my customers. Most of my customers are over 30 so they want a dress that matches with Myanmar culture, such as a simple yin-phone or simple Myanmar design. Whenever I make a fusion design mixing Myanmar and international styles, in general Myanmar people don’t like it as they are more traditional.

Which Designs will be most fashionable in the New Year? Last year classic and elegant designs were popular but extreme and volume fashion designs will be more in style this New Year, I think. People like more creative and strong designs. But in the summer, I think, people will prefer creative colorful designs. I think jumpsuits and coats are good for this New Year. I want to make them with lace and different cloth designs.

40

What advice do you want to give to young people who are interested in fashion and design? My advice is to wear the design that you want, you don’t need to care what other people gossip about you or your style. Think and create your own unique design.

Shopping

You Want Sweet & Smart

Written by Nwe Ni Mar Lay

Think and create your own unique design What is your key to success? My key to success is ‘never try to succeed, but stay and try to never fail’. Your action of trying not to fail will make you a successful person. And don’t forget who helped you when you fail. My shop, ‘Sweet & Smart’, is also one thing that made me a success because I always check what I’ve sold, what designs I have and if people know about my designs or my shop.

Most Myanmar people say Myanmar traditional dress will never be an international grade design or never become worldwide. All I want to say to those people is please shut your mouth and watch what other people create and appreciate it. If you want our traditional dress to become worldwide, appreciate the creative design and let us to show that design to world. If you dislike creative design or a combination of Myanmar design and other designs, as you wish don’t wear it but don’t gossip about it. There is a part of Myanmar culture which is scared and always cares about what other people says, so they don’t want to wear creative things. Therefore, how can our dresses or designs gain worldwide recognition? For instance, you wear a spider man dress for your New Year’s party, it’s ok because it is your desire and it’s none of the other people’s business. So what I want is to let people wear what they want to. One thing I want to say is ‘please forget Myanmar and what Myanmar people say when you create something’. You want to qualify the international grade? Try and incorporate what other countries create.

Shwe Gu Tha Pagoda’s Ancient Frescos in Amarapura

Kanbawzathadi Palace Kanbawzathadi Palace in Bago is a reconstruction of the orginal Royal palace, which were based on the 167 teak pillars found after excavations. It was built by King Bayinnaung of the Taungoo dynasty (1551-1581 AD), in the new capital of the second Myanmar empire, a large city called Hanthawadi (present day – Bago) surrounded by walls with 20 gates on a 70 acres plot. It consists of Bhammayarthana Hall (Bee Throne Hall) for the King and others are for the Royal family. On the palace grounds is the Nandawya research museum, which contains a collection of 16th century Buddha images in Mon, Siamese and Myanmar styles.

42

At the south side of the Shwe Gu Gyi Pagoda (Golden Big Cave Pagoda) and Monastery complex in Amarapura (on the west of the railways compound and between the wards of Zay Gyo and Hman Dan) there are a couple of small temples with a hidden secret. After squeezing yourself through the small door and getting your eyes accustomed to the dim light, ancient frescos on the ceilings and the walls suddenly pop out of the gloom. In one pagoda there are the two paintings of the Buddha’s footprint full of the symbolisms that you usually see. In another pagoda are flowers, prancing horses and dancing maidens – all in reds and golds. Also in the compound is a large ruin of the temple with carving of ogres still proudly guarding it, as well as a monastery building with a very ornate roof mixing colonial and Asian designs.

Art

Myeik’s Boat Builders On the east side of Myeik, a sound of pounding hammers rings in the air – alerting you to wanting to find out more. Turning the corner, huge wooden boats appear floating in the air rather than on the sea. Some are nearly finished with gangs of workers just doing the finishing touches – while others are just the steel spine of the ship with a few teak planks attached. The boatyard supports a thriving fishing industry by repairing old boats and building new ones – using techniques that are passed from generation to generation.

Kawgun Cave Kawgun Cave is a remote location relatively nearby Hpa An. One needs to take a trip passing through Kawgun Village to visit to the temple cave itself. Although no one is certain of the origins, the wall carvings and a series of large statues of Buddha in the cave, are amazing. The most common theory is Kawgun Cave temple was commissioned by a Mon queen in the 7th Century.

Kakku Pagoda Complex, Taunggyi

Golden Bullock Carts

33 miles outside Taunggyi, in Pa-Oh territory, is an ancient pagoda complex built in the 11th Century unlike anything that you have seen before. Over 2,000 stupas line up majestically along and up a slight hill. Each one is individually designed – some with intricate patterns, others with statues of musicians, ogres and mythical creatures. In the centre is large pagoda. There are two main stuppa styles – one designed by the Yun people which are tiered, and the other following the Myanmar design of King Anawratha. If you catch it just right and arrive on a full moon day, the temple complex will be punctuated with the dark blue clothes and the bright colourful turbans of the Pa-Oh people.

Golden Bullock Carts from the Sagaing region are mainly used in “Shin Laung Ceremonies” (a traditional Myanmar religious celebration). Nowadays the golden cart from “Ohn Taw” (Sagaing) are modernized and beautifully converted and covered up with fancy things to match the occasion. The handcrafted cart and the bulls are beautifully decorated. The basic components and the way of building a cart has no significant difference to the construction of a normal cart. However, the wheel of a golden cart has more spokes on the wheels and the carriage of the cart has three ladders/railings in order to make the people who ride in them more comfortable. The interior is covered up with fine velvet. Building a golden cart takes at least forty-five days and could be more. In Sagaing, “Shwe Ya Da Nar” is a famous service center for hiring and viewing golden carts.

U Nar Auk Monastery, Kawhnat Kadow Village, near Mawlamyine Hidden in a small village is an elegant monastery complex proudly displaying the ancient crafts of Myanmar mixed together with architectural styles from Europe, China and India. Inside the complex is the Great Ordination Hall, Shrine halls, a pagoda and residential buildings for the monks. Inside the buildings are three dimensional carvings of Buddha Stories, glass mosaics, and gild work. Every building has a surprise, from the two standing Buddha’s carved out of single teak logs to an ancient glass window reminiscent of those seen in a country house in England. The complex is magnificent and well worth a visit.
