editor’s Letter This month in

MY Yangon... As August draws on, the clouds darken over Yangon City, lashing the tin roofs and umbrella tops alike. The eye of Indra seems fixed on this vast settlement in the Irrawaddy Delta, like an archer over the field of battle. Indra is not the only entity to be watching and waiting eager to join the fray. Investors both foreign and domestic are circling, clasping fists full of dollars ready to swoop in - keen to take advantage of Myanmar’s predicted economic boom. Who are they? Where are they from? What do they want? These are all questions on the tips of most Yangoners' tongues. But the most pertinent question, and one that is so important it is barely whispered as is comes with so much hope, is will they make our lives better or worse?

Sithu Phyo & Hla Phone Aung Taungoo was a capital of an ancient Myanmar kingdom. This powerful kingdom was the seat of seven kings that ruled in the 15th and 16th century. Now Taungoo is a main business city in the Bago Region.

Getting There Traveling from Yangon to Taungoo by car takes about 3-4 hours. Due to its midway location between Yangon and tourist attractions in the north of Myanmar, such as Mandalay and Inle, it is a popular overnight tourist stop when traveling to those destinations by car. Hiring a car from Yangon will cost 150,000 kyats one way. You can catch buses from Yangon to Taungoo at Aung Min Glar Bus Station. A ticket with Say Ta Man Bus Linecost 3,400 kyats and buses leave at 6, 7, 9, and 10 am, and 1 - 8pm on the hour, every hour. Some buses can drop you on the main road in front of Pun Swe Taw Hotel where motor taxis are waiting. The motor taxis cost is between 500 – 1,000 kyats for a one way trip into town. Taungoo has a train station located in the southeastern corner of the city center. It is a major stop on the Yangon-Mandalay route. Train leaves from Yangon Station at 6am and costs 5,000 kyats, the journey takes 5 hours.

Getting Around Motobike Taxis are the best way to travel around Taungoo, and a trip from the south part of the city to north part of the city will cost between 500 to 700 kyats. If you rent the motorbike by time, the fee is 3,500 kyats per hour.

Lake is a tranquil spot to walk around. There is a small activity park on one side and you can rent paddle boats to take out onto the lake.

Japanese cemetry Taungoo was the site of some major conflicts during WWII in which many invading Japanese soldiers lost their lives. There is a small memorial to honour the dead and a steady stream of Japanese visitors make the long trip to pay respect.

Ngwe Taung Monastery This small 60 year old monastery is located infront of the Royal Kaytumadi Hotel and is easy to miss: lookout for the redbrick gate way and a sign over it, which reads “Ngwe Taung Monastery” in Myanmar. There is a small steep covered passage up to the monastery and within the grounds you can see so many plants. The presiding monk, U Tatetha, told us “this Monastery is built by wood, but also this place is a white ant-hill. The white ants destroy the monastery. So, Ngwe Taung Monastery needs donors for long term restoration.” There are few monks in this place but it is really pleasant religious centre. Royal Kaytumadi Road

ZABUAYE Myanmar Food A recently opened restaurant, that used to be a grocery shop, which is very cheap. Rice and any curry costs only 1,000 kyats and a sour fish salad costs only 300 kyats. Despite being open for a short time the shop has become known for its sour soup

prepared with various kinds of vegetables and beans, and also its steamed fish curry. As a dessert they offer jaggery. The restaurant is not only cheap but also neat and tidy, with good service. Open Daily: 10am to 7pm, Location: Market Street, 09 9724 85333, 09 4281 96912

Business Taungoo is 220 km from Yangon, with mountain ranges to the east and west. The surrounding mountains provide Taungoo’s main industry: forestry products, such as bamboo, teak and other hardwoods. The city is also known for its areca palms, whose nuts are commonly refered to as betel nuts. In Myanmar the habit of chewing betel nuts is common practice and can be likened to chewing tobacco. In Taungoo the betel nut is said to have a particularly good taste and Taungoo betel nut is famous amongst betel nut eaters. Betel nut is a major product of Taungoo and there are many betel nut shops and a lot of sellers of betel nut ingredients. There are over 50 ingredients in betel nut. Interestingly, part of these ingredients - the betel leaf, is imported from Hinthada and Yangon, as those regions provide the best quality betel leaf. Nonetheless, Taungoo’s association with good betel nut is so strong that there is even a Burmese proverb that equates unexpected good fortune to a "betel lover winning a trip to Taungoo".

Than Daung Close to Taungoo is Than Daung Hill Station, which was once used by the British colonialists as a summertime retreat. Than Daung is split into two areas, Than Daung Gyi and Than Daung Lay. The closest area to Taungoo is Than Daung Lay, which is about 45 minutes away by car.

Harmony Coffee Bar Probably Taungoo’s most trendy spot, Harmony serves Western, Chinese and Shan food. Nothing costs over 2000 kyats. The setting is a very cool fusion of US rock bar and Asian takeaway. Lots of Taungoo’s young IT couples drape themselves on the steel chairs and there is even a small book stand. The restaurant has an English menu and the staff are super efficient and very polite. Most clients go for the Chinese or Shan food and take advantage of the complementary soup, complete with free refills. The most popular dish is the lemon fish. Cigarettes are offered but they don’t sell alcohol – though I imagine you can bring your own, if the mood takes you. 54 U Phan Phyu Street, 5th ward, 05 424 724

Stellar Food Center A three-roomed fan cooled restaurant with a Kachin style of cooking (I say Kachin because it’s spicy). There are two specialty curries called Pauk Ka Ya, and Saw Hla Kyi, however I wasn’t brave enough to try them. For the less bold they also serve Chinese food, Shan food and give free desserts. You can wash it all down with a Tiger or Myanmar Beer. A great place for family and young people to come and eat. Royal Kaytumadi Hotel The most famous hotel in Taungoo is the Royal Kaytumadi Hotel. Hotel room prices start from 35,000 kyats and during the rainy season they have a 10% discount. Prices are bumped up a little for foreigners. The hotel is located on the lake and, as such, has a few special lake view rooms. Dotted around the hotel are five statues including one of Tapin Shwe Htee, a past King, and also the legendary tragic romantic couple of Taungoo, Nat Shin Naung and Yarza Dartu Kalayar, whose love was forbidden by the king. The hotel also exhibits two preserved traditional Myanmar boats.

Most Taungoo hotels can organize a day trip for roughly 30,000 kyats. Once there you can enjoy scenic walks along the forested mountainside streams and even sample some traditional rice wine (2,000 kyats). The Royal Kaytumadi Hotel is setting up a small hostelry and restaurant that charges 25,000 kyats per room for any visitors who wish to stay overnight.

On top of a pool, spa and gym, the hotel has a lodge for seminars, which also doubles as a wedding hall for local Taungoo residents. For tourists the Hotel can arrange motor and paddle boat trips across the lake as well as trips around Taungoo. Although a mainly abstinent country according to the World Health Organisation - Myanmar's alcohol consumption is the lowest in South East Asia - there does seem to be a surprisingly large number of venues where beer can be consumed. With this in mind and putting my real ale pretentiousness to one side for a moment, I set my sights on getting a taste of the newest brew on the streets – Carlsberg’s Yoma, and in that process also trying and reviewing some old favourites. Apparently the word Yoma means “mountain-range” in Myanmar, which explains why I received a few strange looks from patient waiters as I asked them (in Myanmar) that I would like one beer, and could they inform me where the nearest mountains were. Most of them just gave me a Myanmar beer and pointed north. So it is natural that I start my journey of discovery with Myanmar Beer, the most popular beer in the country with a market share of 64%. With its pale golden colour and strength of 5% it has a delicately hoppy yet weak aftertaste. Occasionally you’ll get a bottle that smells sour or stale, but the draught version is the best option with a head that stays with you until the end. It’s a good beer; I wouldn’t turn one down if you were offering. Myanmar Brewery has number of other beers. ABC Stout which is a real grandaddy of a brew; thick, sweet, chewy, like a shot of liquorice mixed with a can of coke served from a freshly polished boot. Many people mix ABC with lager to make a drink they call an Irrawaddy; others just add a squeeze of lime to counter the sweetness. At 8%, you’d be wise to drink it with care. Their Andaman beer range didn’t fare well in the tasting though, the Gold Lager (4.5%), is like soda water served from a glass that once sat unused at a beer festival, and their Andaman Gold Special (6.5%), looks and tastes waxy like a melted aromatherapy candle, mixed with fizzy water and served in an old paint can.

They also produce Myanmar Double strong and Barons Strong which I wasn’t able to source, and so can’t comment on, oh and one other beer you might have heard of called Tiger. I’ve drunk a fair amount of Tiger Beer in my time in Myanmar, but that’s not because it is a great beer, it’s not. It’s very fizzy, very refreshing and particularly thirst quenching especially when consumed alongside a spicy curry, but other than that there isn’t a lot going for it, other than it’s a convenient alternative to Myanmar beer. Dagon Beverages Co, the other big player in the beer market produces Dagon beer, Dagon extra strong and Skol beer. After an unfortunate personal incident involving Skol Special lager back in 1993 I decided to forgo that particular brew, you’ll have to try that one for yourselves. But Dagon beer on draught is lovely, however in a can it has a tart and gluey taste, leaving your tongue feeling as if it has licked a lot of postage stamps. Dagon extra strong is not a dark beer as the name and strength (8%) suggests, but a pale lager with a kick like an amateur footballer. I only tried this one in the tin, and the overriding taste was distinctly of the container.

My search continued for the elusive brew, whose advertising claims that drinking Yoma is “like the feeling of leaving your luggage behind”. Having experienced arriving at Migaladon and finding out that my luggage is still at Suvarnabhumi, I can equate that feeling to the urge to drink more beer, though I’m not quite sure if this is the emotion that they are aiming at. The other brewing company in Myanmar is Mandalay, they produce Mandalay Lager, which is less gassy than it’s peers and has a magnificent strong fruity, hoppy flavour. It’s not easy to find on draught outside of Mandalay, but try a bottle if you see one in the supermarket, you’ll be surprised as it is by far the best beer in Myanmar by a long way. Their other brew is the interesting Spirulina Beer that is practically a health drink made from algae - a superfood harvested from the crater lake of Twindaung. That explains the hint of a fish tank that hasn’t been cleaned for a while taste. However if you can find it, it’s worth a try, sadly the word on the street is that it is no longer being brewed. Having consumed more beer in one afternoon of investigation than the average Myanmar person does in a year, I headed to the familiar haunt of 19th street to reassess my strategy. To my surprise I accidentally stumbled upon the holy grail of my quest in the place where I least expected it. The Green Dragon at number 90b 19th street is a little spot I’ve walked past a thousand times and never paid any heed to. It is opposite the dodgily named Willy Massage Parlour and is the only place on the street to sell Yoma. As Ma San San Win proudly poured me a glass from their brand new condensation covered pump she explained that she was very pleased with the success of her new brew, she’s tied to Carlsberg and only sells Yoma on draught and Tuborg

in bottles, and is doing alright by that. As I’d been stalking Yoma for a fortnight now I was a bit nervous to taste it at first. You should never meet your idols - you’ll always be disappointed. I won’t lie to you, I wasn’t disappointed, and though Yoma isn’t amazing it certainly wasn’t unpleasant. With an aroma of newly cut grass, it had a subtle sweetness, a hint of woodiness and a good long aftertaste that in fact was not that dissimilar to the draught Budweiser that I cut my drinking teeth on many moons ago in the only bar in my home town that would serve us youngsters. With a slightly stronger abv of 5.4%, Yoma seems to have a little something extra about it than Myanmar and Dagon beers, and as it is the drinkers of these two beers that Carlsberg are targeting that’s not a bad thing. Priced competitively at 700 Kyats for a draught beer, unless you are drinking it in some overpriced swanky bar, it is definitely worth seeking out and sampling a glass or four. As I’d come this far I figured I might as well try the other new kid on the block from Carlsberg - Turborg. At 5% this is the beer aimed at attracting customers who prefer Tiger. Lets leave it at that - and in fact that’s what I did. I was as disappointed from the lack of fizz from the funky ring pull cap, as I was by its flavor of dust that had passed its sell by date. Turborg was the only beer in my quest that I didn’t finish. Tiger has nothing to fear from it, which is a shame and seems a bit of a wasted opportunity. What next? Well Heineken is about to launch their new beer; they’ve named it ‘Regal Seven’ which sounds like a brand of cigarettes from the 1980’s, but will it rock the Myanmar beer-drinking world? I hope so, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Hla Phone Aung & Sithu Linlet Myanmar is famous for its handicrafts and one of the most popular forms of craftsmanship is the production of toys. Myanmar traditional toys include elephants, small red cows, tigers and other animals made of paper and wood. MY Yangon writing duo Sithu Linlet and Hla Phone Aung visited Shwedagon Pagoda to find out moreâ&#x20AC;Ś

We arrived and saw a cute girl playing with paper toys in front of the Myanmar traditional paper toy shop. We took a photograph and bought some toys. And we talked about traditional paper toys. The shop owner buys the toys from a production shop: Lamin Mask and Paper Toys Shop. So we went and interviewed the owner. They have owned the shop since 2009. Mostly, they send the paper toys to Shwedagon Pagoda and Pomelo toy shop. They make 40 kinds of paper toys. First they make a mould with bamboo or wood, then they stick paper soaked in rice paste glue around the mould. The mould is then left to dry in the sun. Afterwards the paper is cut from the mould and painted in bright colours. The moulds need to be dried by sun shine, so they work more in hot season. The toys cost 1,000 - 80,000 kyats.

Some examples of Traditional Toys Pyit-Taing-Htaung Translated as up-wheneverthrown this is the Myanmar version of a weeble (they land upright whenever they are thrown). They come in pairs and usually itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a male and female. The female has a different hair style.

Shwe-Zee-Gwak or 'golden' owls also come in pairs. They are believed to bring good luck to a shop or home and are not necessarily for play. Some people hang mini versions of Shwe-ZeeGwak in their cars

Initially paper toys were made for children to play with. But then, travelling troupes, set builders and ceremony performers started to buy a lot of paper toys and paper instruments such as swords, arrows & bows, daggers etc. for their shows. Now, they have started to get foreign customers such as tourists. They are very happy since foreigners like their toys. Sadly, in Yangon, these days relatively few children buy traditional toys as they prefer and electronic toys instead. But they are still bought by performers and foreigners.

The Ideas Incubator

Pun + Projects, the brainchild of Ivan Pun-a young, intelligent and ambitious entrepreneur has established itself as an ‘ideas incubator’ for different business and event concepts in Myanmar. With a company concept that has always been to promote and develop the arts, culture and food scene in Yangon; Pun + Projects also strives to have a strong design focus, that is very well conceived and thought out; and in particular look aesthetically pleasing, down to the smallest facet. Since 2013, when the company was set-up, Pun + Projects has grown to encompass deliverables that distinctly include creating and executing their own projects, sponsoring events and facilitating the projects of other innovators. This sponsorship or support is potentially all-inclusive and can range from developing design ideas to creating business models. Most notably projects have included the highly popular restaurant, Port Autonomy, as a modern take on the Myanmar beer hall; TS1, as an art space to provide a creative outlet for local and international designers; La Carovana, a fine dining restaurant that serves contemporary Mediterranean cuisine; and The New Boris, a discreet and hip cocktail bar. All projects have gone through various transformations and continue to do so, as a way of responding to a

quickly evolving Yangon; subsequently absorbing new layers and features to each project. The flagship project TS1, developed into a communal art space, a pop-up retail venue for new Myanmar products and a third dining component next door, in the form of the original Port Autonomy, all based at Lanthit Jetty. Up until the establishment of TS1, development of this river side area was practically unheard of and Pun + Projects paved the way with the also new-to-Myanmar concept of a “pop-up” umbrella, under which they could experiment with these spaces for commerce, culture and cuisine-demonstrating the possible development of remarkable downtown Yangon areas. As is often the case with pop-up concepts, the location has changed and the project concepts developed but none of which are still located at the Transit Shed No.1. Port Autonomy has re-located to No. 22 Kabar Aye Pagoda Road and TS1, although in somewhat hibernation, its impact as an art space has firmly made its mark in a number of ways-most notably, its introduction of

commitment to promote Myanmar products continues to permeate throughout Pun + Projects the simple, yet incredibly effective “white cube” exhibition space, full of natural light. This firstof-its kind opportunity for Myanmar artists and Pun + Projects commitment to not charging for its use was greatly appreciated by both the artists and visitors who engaged with this space.

The team is nimble, adaptive, young, creative and not at all bureaucratic; and they all readily tell me the fluidity of their roles and relish in the results and outcomes of their tight team-work efforts. One of the more defined roles of the team is that of the group’s executive chef, Kevin Ching. It is due his talents that currently most of their projects fall within the F&B space. Dressed in his uniform of black T-shirt and baseball cap, he is the mastermind behind the gastronomic goodness, Port Autonomy (PA) and their newest hope, La Carovana. The team has had a substantial experience of trial and error in a drastically fast-moving business landscape. They are now grasping a good idea of what works and how to execute it. Despite being

a young team the company is now mature in its outlook and its ability to deliver projects.Their current upcoming projects include a variety of more commerce, culture and cuisine concepts; always within an extended framework of collaboration. Having started as something new and previously unseen in Yangon, Pun + Projects is now a professional player in Yangon’s art, culture and hospitality world. As for the future, their hopes can be best summed up by the company’s founder Ivan, whose original intent remains"I would like for us to be known as being a dynamic and creative young company that strives to create innovative and thoughtful projects; and most importantly with an uncompromising commitment to excellence".

Just like the retail space that sold “Myanmar Made” products; such commitment to promote Myanmar products continues to permeate throughout Pun + Projects as much as possible, from the food its restaurants serve to the teak table in the head office, that was created, designed and built in Myanmar. Even though Pun + Projects is now an organisation with 60 employees, the inspiration engine room is driven by a small team of international and local creatives with a wide range of experiences, skills and expertise; all hoping to up the ante on Yangon’s aesthetic elements and facilitate the chance for the wider community to embrace them.

A Natural Resources Town:

The Solution to Yangon’s Real-Estate Fears? Brandon Win & Jeff Lim

yanmar real-estate is seeing investment matched by no other commodity or opportunity in Myanmar. Why is it so expensive, so highly valued, and even more expensive than real estate in New York City? The answer can be sought out and explained in various ways, but to cut it short, there is nothing else to really put your money safely in. Cars used to be as valued as land with import taxes of up to over 200% of the car’s actual price during the previous governmental era. Nonetheless, car prices rapidly decreased within a span of a year, and those that had bought their cars for twice the actual prices suffered significantly. They weren’t getting any of that money back, their only hope - using the car for what they had bought it for. This is not the case for real estate. At least, not yet, it’s not too late to prevent the real estate market from behaving the same way as the automobile market did, as Yangon is still in its early stages of urban city development. As more and more Foreign Direct Investments come in, more and more commercial buildings will be bought and occupied, with hopes of bringing in more entertainment and attractions to the golden land. This is not to say that everything is running smoothly; there is news being circulated that the sales for apartment rents and purchases have decreased this year. This decrease in the purchase of high-end luxury apartments has set back many

More and more commercial buildings will be bought and occupied, with hopes of bringing in more entertainment and attractions to the golden land projects, but yet has not completely stopped them. As each day passes, more and more apartment complexes are being built and constructed across the whole city, with a range of prices depending on the location and standard of the apartments. A concerning part of Myanmar’s rapid increase in real-estate value is that it parallels to the Lost Decade, which is a Japanese real-estate bubble in 1990s. At that time many investors believed in gaining profit after the globalization of Tokyo and nearby areas. This was due to rapid economic growth in Japan until the late 1980s. Considering the Japanese economy is still affected and suffering from 1990s real-estate market crash, preventative measures are prudent. So then, how do we separate the high concentration of real-estate investment on Yangon? One suggestion is creating a new natural resources town. A natural resources town is when a government develops a city far from other large

urban areas for the natural resources. Recently many countries all over the world are actively building plans to enter into Myanmar, and one of the main reasons is the natural resources. For instance, the Korea Development Institute has been writing many academic articles on natural resources opportunities in Myanmar. Many foreign companies would be eager to move into a natural resources town. Plus, many foreigners and Myanmar people would move into the city to follow the new job opportunities. Plus, the population concentration control would be a bonus. A great example of a natural resources town is Dallas, Texas in the United States. Building a city from scratch is something Myanmar has done before – the capital Naypyitaw being the shining example. Could repeating the exercise with a focus on locating the city close to key natural resources be an eloquent solution to Yangon and Myanmar’s Real-Estate fears? Only time, commitment and investment will tell.

Over the next few issues MY Yangon will be interviewing some of Myanmar’s most charismatic businesspeople. First Up is Martin Pun… Martin Pun is the brother of well-known Myanmar business tycoon Serge Pun. However not only is he an extremely successful and accomplished businessman is his own right but he is a committed philanthropist, who has spearheaded efforts to solve social and environmental issues in Myanmar from HIV awareness to disaster relief. Can you tell us the first steps you took to build your business?

If you have problems at work how do you solve them?

What do you think about CSR, and how much importance do you give it?

Initially you could say I had to make a decision in my life, one to pursue a career in corporate governance or two to set up a private limited company. I chose to work in corporate governance and corporate management and later my brother asked me to join his company as his CEO in 1994.

Important and urgent matters happen in work everyday. If you concentrate on important issues everyday then urgent issues seldom arise. Most problems are created by oneself when you failed to do daily, your important thing.

Business is about understanding your stakeholders – taking care of them is CSR. It is the most important thing as your stakeholders are who you will be working and living with. It must be part of your operational thinking not a created programme. For example, how do you throw away rubbish in your office? Is it recycled or just thrown out - it should be automatically recycled. CSR should be an unconscious good process throughout your organisation.

However later, in 2002, I founded my own not-forprofit organisation, and then in 2007 I retired from my brother’s company and started a consultation business helping SME’s rebrand, find new partners and get new capital.

So you think your staff follow your leadership? You don’t demand leadership, you create an image or a brand people can follow – you must create that in your brand. Good people work for a reason above pay. It is up to you to create that reason.

How do you balance work and your

Is this life your dream? If not, what was your dream in childhood? If I lived again I would live the same life again. No one should have regrets, as everyone’s life is their own creation. Everyone to an extent has a choice of what their life could be, it is up to them to think “IF IT IS TO BE! IT IS UP TO ME! Mentality” There are so many people looking for good people to depend upon, search and you should find the opportunity. Do understand, many people wait for an opportunity to happen to them, when it doesn't happen, they blame it on luck. The correct question should be “What have you done to find your dream opportunity”?

How important is the support of friends and family? Totally important, they are your inner stakeholders. Even god needs friends and family!

What is your hobby and do you have enough time to pursue it? No one has enough time to pursue his or her hobby. Hobbies take time and money and no one has enough time AND money. But, selective hobbies need to be pursued if not bad habits will replace the time and money hobbies take. A good hobby is the only thing that can replace bad habits.

personal life? It is a personal choice on how you perceive life. Each individual decides what is life? Some feel work is life, others not. I don’t balance as the two are the same. They should be together. I don’t believe in such things as ‘quality’ family time, how do you define ‘quality’?

What is your business goal? The ability to create leadership in and around your own community. If your business can create leaders in the community then you are a success. Leaders in business, CSR, creating jobs etc., I feel satisfied when an ex-employee phones and tells me he or she is now a director at another company. I want to create leaders and directors of the future.

What brands do you admire? I admire brands with good programmes. For example Unilever, they have a good balance

What advice would you give young people? Never underestimate anyone younger because one day they will be adults. Second, most of the time you have what you need to succeed in your own hands. Don’t blame your parents if you don’t succeed. Nowadays with the Internet no one can blame a lack of information or education. Know what you want out of life - it is your choice.

If you had 100,000 Kyats in your pocket to spend in Yangon, how would you spend it? Use it to buy your own time and spend your “purchased time” to help someone who needs your time. It could be children, employee, gardener or a stranger. Do not feed someone a fish, teach someone how to fish. It takes time to teach someone to fish.

Can you share a funny experience you have had in your business life? In 2002 I started a workplace HIV education programme. We now have offices all over Myanmar. HIV affects people with money and jobs. What’s more if the breadwinner is the person sharing the educational information to a family it makes it more acceptable. If the breadwinner comes back and mentions what he learns about any issue, the whole family listens, not when a youngster brings the same information back. I guess the funny situation I see quite often due to my work is listening to an entire family, children, parents and even grandparents all in the same room talking about HIV education and sharing knowledge on avoiding needle sharing and using condoms to protect oneself.

Chant Chan Book Publication He is a writer and poet. His name is Soe Min Aung, he wanted to own a publishing company because he loved literature. So he started his own publishing company, naming it after his son, Chant Chan in 2014.

What is a creative idea and reveals a bit of Myanmar History and Culture - Yangoods. Yangoods takes early 20th century designs and changes them into souvenirs. They opened in May and launched as a Burmese Vintage shop, rejuvenating Myanmar heritage from early the 20th century. Some of the products they offer are printed pouches and bags, printed cushions, copper boxes, bracelets, vintage style notebooks, printed tin box sets, metal calendars, table mat sets, printed crystal balls, pop magnets etc. Their handicrafts and souvenirs can be used to decorate your home and office, as a gift and for use in daily life. “I was working at the Art Magazine as an executive editor and designer. I left this job, and then went back to my hometown, Taunggyi, because I wanted to get back my poet’s lifestyle and give time to my son. Another reason was to start a publishing company by myself ” His friends, Phoe Saung and Moe Thet produced the first book with him, a poetry book titled “Rice’s Ghost”. They printed 500 copies and the book contained 20 poems. Now they print a variety of books - poetry, essays, short novels, religious features, and youth features. In a year, they publish over ten books. The last published book was “Young and Move”, written by Min Soe. Value Myanmar Traditional Water Proof Pathein Umbrellas

Cici Office Wear for the Modern Myanmar Women After graduating from the Swarthmore College, Hilary Yee, CEO and founder of Cici, came back to Myanmar. She found herself wearing the same US clothing over and over again.

Value Myanmar Traditional sells two types of Myanmar traditional Pathein umbrellas, satin and water proof. Both come in all sizes and all colors. The shop is located in Kandawgyi Natural Park near Karaweik Barge. These colorful umbrellas are between 4 inches to 10 feet high and cost between 3 to 120 USD. The owner, Ko Than Htwe Zaw says, “Large sizes are 10 feet, 8 feet and 6 feet, and decorate restaurants and hotels. In my shop there are many sizes and colors. Most clients are from Europe, Korea and Malaysia.”

At the time, she was an intern at Myanmar Marketing Research and Development Ltd., and Yee was torn about what to wear - traditional clothes or a formal office look? As a young woman who had just started working, she was not a big fan of going to the office wearing the same old clothes. That’s when she came up with the business idea of ready-towear women’s garments for the modern Myanmar woman. Fortunately, her parents have been in the fabric business for over twenty years (Ma Rosy from Rosy’s Chin Fabrics), and supported her idea. With the help of her parents’ factories she launched a small fashion show as a social enterprise. Yee showed clothes with a mix of ‘modern office look’ and traditional cloth. The feedback from the show was very positive and Yee dove into the business in earnest by hiring a product designer, three designers and a sales department.

“If residents buy more than 5 umbrellas, we offer maintenance services for two or three months. After maintenance, the umbrellas are good as a new. For foreign customers, we teach them the techniques of how to maintain the umbrellas.”

Cici officially opened up last year, and has expanded nicely. MY Yangon met her at her shop on the corner of Shinsawpu & West Myaynigone Street. She was wearing a formal but stylish one-piece dress. Yee looked like an ordinary women in twenties.

“Most of the foreigners like the colors of red, orange, yellow and sometimes green. They like dark colors. In the tourist high season, we show the making process. Foreigners like the demonstration and other shops don’t do it.”. “Now, this place has become a photo corner, everybody wants to take photos in here!”

She energetically explained her business and vision. When asked about business she said “we broke the sales record last month! Sales are increasing but it’s still not at a point of satisfaction.” Yee said she had started to sell office uniforms with a customized printing service. Also, she told me about the plan to expand the product range and start selling accessories in the near future. “There are two types of Pathein umbrellas. One is made with satin, it is called a Satin Umbrella for beauty. It is not water proof, only for good looks. The other type is water proof, and called the water proof oil umbrella. This is made with cloth and local organic glue. I can say our Pathein umbrellas are 100 percent handmade. Local people like the Satin Umbrella and foreign people like the water proof umbrella. A water proof umbrella will last in a house a long time and 3 years if used outside.”
