Technology Special

MY Yangon... Stating the very obvious the current and expected technology revolution that is hitting Myanmar will change the landscape of the country drastically. In no area is this more clearly demonstrated than in the telecommunications sector where in just the last year or so the presence of two foreign operators (Telenor and Ooredoo) in a market previously exclusively owned by the government operated MPT has accelerated the uptake of new technology and its accessibility to the masses. That said you might hear many people caution that this revolution is still in its infancy and although this may be true, with every passing day it is rapidly becoming less so. The technology revolution in Myanmar is a proverbial fruit fly and if you blink you might find out its grown up, died and been replaced by the technological norms that you experience elsewhere in South East Asia – widespread internet, mobile banking, credit cards etc. The horizon is far off but Myanmar is travelling at lightning speed! The real hope for Myanmar is that, in this mad corporate-lead dash for the finish line, the advantages that new technology can bring to the most in need can be realised and the pit falls that have driven inequality and exclusion elsewhere in South East Asia can be avoided. A hope, which in the shortest of moments, will soon become apparent.

John Robert Powers Personality Development and Finishing School The first of its kind in Myanmar, the world famous John Roberts Powers Personality Development and Finishing school has landed in Yangon. With a list of famous Alumni including Grace Kelly, William Baldwin, Ashton Kutcher, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, JRP aims to be an instant hit with the aspirational Myanmar crowd.

Spotted in Mingalar Zay. Clothes bought in Sein Gay Har.

The Myanmar franchise is partnered with the South East Asian HQ in Manila who provide staff and support. JRP representative Archie Lawrence Geneta from Manila states 'JRP is relevant and revolutionary. Myanmar hasn’t seen this before, and it (JRP) is taking the lead in helping Myanmar people develop their soft skills. It is relevant for Myanmar people who want to experience personal growth, and it is timely as it provides a way for Myanmar people to walk hand in hand with the international community whilst maintaining cultural identity. The global community is getting smaller; we are part of a 'global village' whose communication borders are compressed significanty with the aid of technology. Image and etiquette is getting more important. It is a human fundamental to be able to communicate with good image and confidence in face of the ever-evolving social conditions influenced by the technologocal age.' JRP hopes the skills it will teach will help students engage more

confidently with the global community and through that better share of Myanmar's rich cultural heritage and traditions, whilst still looking to the future. JRP operates 4 pillars or modules each with 5 different levels and each available either for kids, Pre-teens, Teens, Young adults, or adult/executives. The four pillars are Image Enhancement, Personal Transformation, Social Graces, and Effective Communication. Each module has a slightly different direction depending on whether you choose the celebrity or communication focus. Classes started on the 18th of May and are 20 hours per level. The school will include a gym, beauty salon, and Yoga studio. 62/B Inya Road, Kamayut Tsp www.facebook.com/jrpmyanmar | www.jrpmyanmar.com 01 525 196

The Herman Miller Collection is a series of furniture that draws on George Nelson’s vision of "a permanent collection designed to meet fully the requirements for modern living.” George Nelson was a noted teacher and writer, as well as a designer.

“a permanent collection designed to meet fully the requirements for modern living.” - George Nelson, 1952 As the lines blur between how and where we work and live, people are redefining their perceptions of what a space can be. This reality was remarkably envisioned in 1952 by George Nelson as “a daytime living room where work can be done under less tension with fewer distractions,” and is deftly addressed with the 'Living and Lounge' concept and offerings. This comprehensive portfolio offers a breadth and depth of products to furnish complete environments in a myriad of settings, both residential and contract, elegant and casual, across a range of prices.

Like many designs by Charles and Ray Eames, the Eames Molded Plywood Family is a result of a philosophy that views design as an ongoing journey of evolution, insight, and delight. For the designers, everything was a process and an exploration. When they married and began working together in the 1940s, part of their journey involved exploring seating solutions crafted from one piece of material—a curved, single-shell form in which the seat and back are one. The Herman Miller Collection and other Herman Miller lifestyle and office products are available from MMRD, the only authorised dealer in Myanmar.

Myanmar's New Tech Groups driving the change to improve the public's Quality of Life As connectivity in Myanmar improves, new groups of super smart tech gurus are teaming together to try to harness the power of communication and information for the good of the country. The vessel in which many of these groups meet, form and flourish is Phandeeyar. Phandeeyar - Myanmar Innovation Lab, started in January last year out of a Code for Change meeting. Phandeeyar director, David Madden, says 'The connectivity revolution has the potential to transform the country'. This change had been driven by the incoming telecommunication companies Telenor and Ooredoo and in particular the wireless penetration commitments written into their licenses. Ooredoo plan to cover 80% of the population with wireless network by the end of 2015. The question Phandeeyar asks is - how can we harness this potential to improve lives? And specifically what tech product does Myanmar need to improve people's lives? In March 2014 an embryonic Phandeeyar held Myanamr's first ever 48 hour hackathon in conjunction with code for change and internews.

The hackathon was designed to find solutions to two sets of questions. The first on social and political issues: the second on issues facing small to medium sized enterprises. The specific questions to be answered were given by NGOs and SMEs. The questions included how to alert farmers about pests and diseases? How to contact sex workers with outreach programs? How to create fair elections? The SME's also wanted; a booking application, an accounting application and a home delivery application. The hackathon also looked to see at what level the tech skills were at in Myanmar. And how many people were interested in tech as a whole.

Omidyar Network, Open Society Foundation, Schmidt Family Foundation (founded by Eric 'Google' Schmidt), Baydin (a Myanmar tech company in Silicon Valley) and Internews.

Phandeeyar, which means creation space in Myanmar, was founded formally in the aftermath of the hackathon as a permanent home for this kind of work – as David explains 'a place that brings together social enterprises, independent media, NGO's and technology.' It is backed by

1) To expand the pool of tech talent in

The hope is to build applications and content that can accelerate change. In the past such hubs have been very powerful in developing countries; for example the ihub (also backed by Omidyar Network) in Nairobi, and they hope to replicate this success in Myanmar. Phandeeyar has 4 objectives

Myanmar (i.e. run coding workshops, development groups, design/thinking workshops)

| MY Yangon | Issue 10

15

2) Help civil society integrate tech into their work (social media privacy etc.)

3) Help independent media integrate 4) Bring these 3 together Since kicking off these initiatives they have brought in experts from Silicon Valley to perform workshops - in particular experienced Myanmar tech experts who work there. They have also held a founders roundtable, creative's meet-ups, maker's meet ups (cool virtual reality goggles were exhibited at this – and there are 2000 maker's meet up members), the New York Times have visited, they have opened a knowledge exchange with Civic Tech, started a Story Telling With Data programme, linked with the Myanmar Peace Exchange and much more. In terms of equipment HP have donated materials and are offering HP' entrepreneurship training. For Phandeeyar, joining is currently free, however they plan to start charging 30USD per month a desk in future for new civic society groups and to charge people to use the space for commercial functions. They have no branches in other cities, but do hold workshops and bar camp events in other Myanmar cities and do offer financial help to those traveling from outside Yangon. Their Yangon office is located in Mac Tower 11th Floor, 561 Merchant Road (Mahabandoola Park Road & 35th Street) the entrance is left of the notary office and the Myanmar bookshop - 09 421 136 565 Phandeeyar hopes to be a hub for other groups, for example GeekGirls. GeekGirls is run by Sandi Thein, she got involved in Geek Girls whilst working in Ideabox (a tech hub) for Ooredoo. When GeekGirls Myanmar started in September 2014 it was originally backed by Ooredoo but at the moment it is supported by Phandeeyar. Sandi says 'Our aim is to encourage women in tech to be more engaged in tech activities in Myanmar and to foster them to be in front in a male dominated industry'. Currently GeekGirls are focusing on community development and to this end they hold regular monthly meet-ups at Phandeeyar. The meetings consist of themed talks on various topics, coding workshops & entrepreneurial training. The benefits of joining the group are getting

to know other GeekGirls from the community, personal network expansion, learning about new opportunities by meeting experienced people from Myanmar and overseas (this is especially true for students), and learning more about tech from the free training sessions and workshops. There is no joining fee. Currently they are based only in Yangon however they do have members from Mandalay and other towns in Myanmar. The formation of tech groups has inspired the formation of new tech companies. One such company is Bindez, which is a mobile information platform for Myanmar. Their story started in 2013 when Rahul Batra met Htet Wai Phyo at Project Hub Yangon. Project Hub Yangon is an incubation/fellowship programme that provided training, mentoring and knowledge sharing for people interested in tech and IT. The pair came up with a concept to build a platform that could bring information to people in Myanmar in their own language. After recruiting in Htet Wai Phyo's college friend Ye Win Ko, the product launched in April 2014 as a fully functional mobile information platform for Myanmar. Since the original concept the scope has broadened to reflect the fact information is not always language specific i.e. it can be weather, data, currency rates etc. Bindez aims to be the missing link between readers and content in Myanmar. The mobile application is designed with the user's needs in mind and contains many useful features such as individual bank exchange rates and a save function whereby the user can store interesting articles to read later. Rahul Batra hopes the application can "help solve daily life issues" for people in Myanmar. Another example of a new company to grow out of this new tech community is Rebbiz. Rebbiz

created MyanmarCarsDB.com - the leading online automobile portal in Myanmar. The portal was launched in January 2012 and is funded by private investors. Since launching, close to 50,000 cars have been listed on their marketplace. Their aim is to connect car buyers and sellers directly through an online platform, which can offer both parties an easier, faster, and more transparent process to buy/sell their cars. Using the platform saves the users much time and effort compared to the traditional way of visiting physical car marketplaces. The platform is free and anyone can start selling cars without any limitation unless they would like to use the premium car listing services. On a daily basis they develop cool new technology features and maintain the existing product, support customer enquiries and solve any issues they may have, educate new customers on the importance of internet technologies as well as how to use the online car marketplace in their existing auto businesses. As IT infrastructure in Myanmar improves these tech groups and the companies they inspire to form will help drive the connectivity revolution, and hopefully with it improve Myanmar people's quality of life. Interestingly for the Bindez management team the relatively low consumption of online content in Myanmar is not just an issue of poor internet connectivity. Ye Win Ko explains "when I was back in my home town I was in a waiting room with 40 or so other people. They all had mobile phones which could access mobile data however no one was on their phone, as you might see in Singapore (people using data on their phones); they were all drawing or doing something else. The drive to use the internet is still not there, there is still something missing." However, the team does expect that to change and hopes that easy to use useful aps, like Bindez, can facilitate this change.

The Cultural Museum An interesting place to visit in Taunggyi is the Cultural Museum which displays various cultural objects from the different ethic groups living in Shan State. A few objects are accompanied with an English-language explanation. The most interesting items are probably the belongings of the Sawbwas who were the Shan Chiefs in ages past. Bogyoke Aung San Road, admission $2 or 2000 Kyats, Opening hours 9.30am-4pm Wed-Sun

Nearby Inle Lake

I first visited Taunggyi 20 years ago. Recently I returned by chartered bus with my colleagues as part of an office excursion. Over the last 20 years, in my eyes, everything in Taunggyi has changed. In fact the only thing not to change is its weather. It is commonly believed that the local weather is possibly the nicest in the whole country. Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State and as the capital of the Shan State, Taunggyi hosts many government offices. Taunggyi is built on a plateau at an elevation of 1425 meters (4700 feet) above sea level. The name Taunggyi means "Big Hill" in the Myanmar language, alluding to the mountain ridge on the east of the city.

Taunggyi is the cultural melting pot for the midland area of Shan State. Apart from the indigenous Inthas and the Pa-Ohs, who are culturally and linguistically different from the Shan, there are significant numbers of Shans, Bamars, Gurkhas, Chinese, Burmese Muslims and other native ethnic minorities living there. We stayed in Musel Hotel in downtown Taunggyi. Musel Hotel was reasonably priced and comfortable. But there was much more to see‌

GETTING THERE The main access to Taunggyi is by a mountainous road. If you want to travel to Taunggyi by rail the closest station is at Shwenyaung, 12 miles (19 km) to the west. The nearest airport is in the town

of Heho, which is about one hour drive away. The best way to travel there is probably via bus. Express buses from Yangon to Taunggyi leave every day from Aung Mingalar Highway Bus Station. The popular express bus lines are Elite, Taung Paw Thar, Shwe Ka Bar, Yan Gyi Aung and Shwe Mandalar. Departure time from Yangon is 8 AM and 5 to 6 PM depending on the bus line. You will arrive to Taunggyi at around 6 AM the next morning. The ticket price for Yangon-Taunggyi express bus is 12,000 kyats for normal class and 19,000 kyats for VIP class. Around Taunggyi there are many interesting places to visit. Such as Inle Lake, Phaung-DawOo Pagoda festival, Khaung Daing, kakku pagoda, Guan Yin Buddhist Monastery, Ayethaya Vineyard, Pindaya-Shwe Oo Min Caves, and the Cultural Museum.

Ayethaya Vineyard

PLACES TO VISIT IN TAUNGGYI KAKKU PAGODA Whilst visiting Taungyi with my colleagues, we visited Kekku Pagoda about 42 km (26 miles) south of Taunggyi, which has a collection of more than 2000 small stupas. The stupas date back to 16th century. During the annual pagoda festival in midMarch, pilgrims from all over Shan State flock to this religious complex riding hundreds of bullock carts.

The Guan Yin Chinese-Buddhist Monastery (Kwan Yin Si Hpaya Kyaung) Guan Yin is an East Asian Deity of Mercy. The monestry is located in the KyaungGyi Su Quarter.

St. Joseph's Cathedral St. Joseph's Cathedral and its seminary, as well as a Baptist church, were all established by early missionaries. There is also a smaller Anglican church, which originally served the British administrators, but sadly it needs restoration work. Yay Htwet Oo Road

Just a few km west of town, Ayethaya Vineyard is one of only two European-style wineries in the entire country, the other is Red Mountain Vineyard, located near Nyaungshwe at the north end of Inlay Lake. Visitors can tour the vineyards and see how the wine is made, and then relax at the Sunset Wine Garden Restaurant. Htonebo, Ayethaya, 095 81 208548, 09 49361367

Pindaya Shwe Oo Min Caves Located in the town of Pindaya about 70 kms northwest of Taunggyi, in an area administed by the ethnic Danu, are the Pindaya Shwe Oo Min Caves which contain thousands of centuries-old Buddha Images. The images are different sizes and some are carved in the face of the rock itself. The stunning beauty of the surrounding country side is said to resemble Switzerland. Pindaya Cave Entrance Fee - US$ 5

Inle Lake is located about 30 km to the south of Taunggyi. This massive high altitude lake is famous the world over for its picturesque scenery, unique fishermen who row with one leg, floating villages and markets. At Ywama there is a floating market every five days and another spot to visit is the village of Khaung Daing. Inle silk is quite popular in Myanmar and you can see hand-loom silk weaving in Inpaw-Khon village. Inle Lake Entrance Fee -US$ 5

Phaung-Daw-Oo Pagoda festival Phaung-Daw-Oo Pagoda is situated in Inle Lake and holds a special festival once a year in midOctober which is best known for the traditional one-leg rower’s boat race. Entrance Fee -US$ 5

Khaung Daing This Intha village in the north-western shore of Inle Lake is famous for the hot springs nearby, which is the main

Feature reason people visit there. Khaung Daing village can be reached in 2 hours by car directly from Taunggyi but beware the road to Khaung Daing from Taunggyi is quite bumpy! Once there you can enjoy both the public bath houses as well as private bath rooms (US$ 2 per room). The water is said to cure a number of joint and muscle diseases such as arthritis. Apart from hot springs, Khaung Daing is also well known for soybean cakes and Shan noodles as well as pottery and weaving.

Welcome to market shopping in Yangon! Admittedly to the uninitiated the market can seem to be an intimidating place to visit. Busy, bustling, noisy, confusing, where do you begin? With stall after stall of unpronounceable green leafy vegetables stretching as far as the eye can see, unknown pungent smells flooding your nostrils, blood and guts dripping off tables, flies being wafted, crabs fighting to get out of their buckets, dogs rummaging through piles of rubbish, and more often than not a fair amount of mud. Pushing a trolley around an air-conditioned supermarket and picking up Australian avocadoes

and Californian potatoes may seem like a much easier, less stressful (if slightly more expensive) process. But with a bit of effort and a good sense of humour the market shopping experience can be an absolute delight. Yangon is blessed with an abundance of open air and indoor fresh food markets, all selling an array of weird and wonderful fruit, vegetables, fish and meats. And they are cheap as well, I mean really cheap, for as much as a bag of imported grapes and tub of foreign mushrooms from a supermarket you can pick up more fresh produce than you can carry, a stack of flowers, a chunk of meat, and still have change for a coffee and a pancake.

First thing in the morning is the best time to go, before it gets too hot, and the fish are still squirming about. There is something satisfying about buying giant prawns for next to nothing, and knowing they were in the sea few hours earlier, or picking your vegetables knowing that they were dug up from the fields of Shan State earlier in the week. If you’ve never been to a market before and are feeling a little apprehensive about the visit then there are numerous cooking classes available in Yangon at the moment and they all include a market tour as part of the experience. If you really are interested in changing your shopping habits, they could be a

great way of taking the first step. Failing that just ask a Myanmar friend to go along with you for the first visit, they can help you with the translations, help discover what some of items on display are used for (quite often soup) and to generally work out the lie

You don’t need to haggle, and you can pick and choose your selection to make sure you are happy with the quality of the products; you’ll be presented with a small plastic bowl to put your chosen vegetables before they are weighed. Or you could just ask for an amount relative to the amount of money you want to spend and the stallholder will help you out. The market isn’t the place to buy pre-packaged foods, don’t be fooled by the easy option of film wrapped strawberries, you might be disappointed by the ones you can’t see, best to pick them yourself. And on the whole the market traders are all fairly patient and happy to help you to buy their wares. If you take your time, and shop about you will be able to find all manner of produce that you recognise and if it all gets too much, take five with a cold drink, or a freshly squeezed cane juice to recharge the batteries. Juicy fresh Rambutans and Mangosteens can be eaten straight from the stall, their skins keeping the moist flesh clean, whilst other purchases are better washed before consumption.

of the land, and find out where to buy what. A little Myanmar language goes a long way, and if you can build up a relationship with a few traders over time, and they understand that you aren’t just a tourist coming to have a gawp and take some photos without buying anything, then subsequent visits will become much easier and more pleasant.

A great starting point for the first time market goer is 26th street, where traders are tightly packed in displaying their wares on sacks and in baskets on the floor. Theingyi Zay (Zay or Zei is the Myanmar word for Market), is a sprawling market in Latha township, you’ll probably get lost in here, but you’ll also probably find everything you need whilst trying to work out how to get out. Hleden market, just off Pyay Road at Hledan Junction, is another large and open area to check out, and there are plenty of places to escape for a cup of tea and sit down nearby. Thiri Mingala Market goes on around the clock and is located on Bayint Naung Road in Hlaing Township. And if you are feeling really adventurous then head to San Pya Zei, the fish market located on the

be an absolute

If you’ve got the time, and are prepared to make some mistakes, have a laugh at your own expense with the stallholders and get some mud in your flip-flops then there really is nothing better than getting stuck into a good local market. Try some unusual foods, escape your comfort zone, practice your language skills, learn more about the community and country you live in and bring some delightful fresh and healthy foods to your table.

One viss is 1.63 kg and 1 tical is 16.3 g. Viss is used to measure mohinga, fruits and vegetables, ticals for weighing rice.

Myanmar company Blue Ocean Operating Management won one of six Young Entrepreneurs ASEAN Business Award handed out last November. The prize aims to recognise excellent companies that are founded and actively managed by a business person under 45.

Which is the longest river? The Ayeyarwaddy River (or Irrawaddy River as it was previously known as). It flows relatively straight from the North to the South of Myanmar, emptying through the Ayeyarwaddy Delta into the Andaman Sea. It is sometimes referred to as 'The Road to Mandalay', after Rudyard Kipling's poem.

Did you know that a bird which was believed to be extinct was found in Myanmar? Scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society stumbled upon a Myanmar Jerdon's babbler during an expedition. It was not been seen since 1941.

Why teak wood is so valuable? Beyond its beauty, teak has some natural properties that other woods don't have. All trees contain natural oils to protect the tree (like maple sap and tea tree oil). Teak (Tectona grandis), however, can retain these oils and its rubber even after being felled and processed. When dried to 10% of its original moisture level, the oils and rubber weatherproof the wood. The oils also protect the wood from dry rot and from invaders like fungi and parasites.

Is thanaka really sun protective? Thanaka powder is derived from the bark of different trees, including: Hesperethusa crenulata, Murraya ssp and Limonia acidissima. It is used to refresh, whiten the skin, protect from the sun light, prevent skin aging, check acnes and dermatitis, heal small wounds etc. Some people use it as a supplement for kids. However, only few scientific experiments have been performed to test these traditions. In 2010 researchers from Thailand found in the thanaka derived from Hesperethusa crenulata some substances with antioxidant, antiinflammatory and moderately anti-bacterial effect. Thanaka might also have an anti-tyrosinase activity (controlling melanin production), which could explain the skin-whitening effect. However, in the absence of studies on humans, conclusions are hard to draw. You can learn more about thanaka and its traditional use in the Museum of Thanaka in Bagan.

What’s special about the U Bein bridge’s design? U Bein bridge is considered the longest and oldest teak bridge in the world. The bridge was built in the mid 1800’s by the mayor U Bein with unwanted teak columns taken from Amarapura's old palace when King Mindon decided to move the capital to Mandalay. According to historic books, engineers counted footsteps for scaling and measuring. The

Letizia Diamante

bridge was built with a curve in the middle to resist the pressure from wind and water. The bottom ends of the main teak posts were hammered seven feet deep into the river bed. Originally, there were 984 teak posts supporting the bridge and two approach brick bridges. Over time some of the pillars have been replaced by concrete ones to strengthen the structure. The bridge has also nine passageways, where the floors can be lifted to allow the transit of big boats.

Where can you listen to technology and social innovation talks in Yangon? Phandeeyar centre organizes regular free talks and events open to all (register to their newsletter to know more about it: http://www.phandeeyar org/).

Why some elephants are white? And why are they so rare? Among the Thais and other peoples of Southeast Asia, white elephants are regarded as symbols of power and luck. These elephants can not make the normal grey pigment inside their skin cells, a condition called albinism. The grey colouring is important because it protects the elephants from the UV light of the sun. In these elephants, the gene (sequence of DNA) that give the instruction to the cell to make the grey pigment is changed or mutated. Sometimes the elephants appear pinkish, because without skin pigments, the blood vessels show through. Albinism is rare, because only a small percentage of animals carry one copy of this mutated gene. Moreover for an animal to be albino, it must receive one of these mutated genes from both of its parents.

the Buddha's holy stories. Some of Myanmar's oldest artworks, the mural paintings in the Bagan pagodas, are still visible today. Every Myanmar person has always seen pictures of Buddha's story since he was young and art makes him understand the story better. Since Myanmar is a Buddhist country, art is always involved with Myanmar people's lives.

Who are the most interesting/exciting Myanmar artists? U Lun Gywe, Min Wai Aung, Bogie, Kyee Myint Saw, WPM, Aung Myint, U Malar, Nann Nann and Min Zeyar Oo

The biggest reward for me as an individual collector is the joy in just looking at an art piece and enjoying every moment of it. Of course there is also the satisfaction of financial gain when we let go of that art piece one day.

What are the challenges and rewards of running a gallery in Yangon?

Over the last five years the art scene in Myanmar has grown considerably. How has it changed over this time?

Since art is a specialized subject not everyone can understand what art is all about. People who appreciate art know that collecting artwork is an investment. Those who do not appreciate art will

Artists are more exposed in their ideas and have contributed to many changes. The first wave was in 1988 when an open market policy was practiced. The second wave was at the Asean Art Award

Competition in 2002 which introduced large size paintings. The third wave was when the Democratic Government came into effect in 2011, since then the art business has become more vibrant, many art galleries opened, private art schools for various levels opened, all art students from government schools can join the art business directly, many art classes are taught in government high schools and even in private high schools. But most importantly teachers and parents understand that providing art subjects to youngsters is very effective to inspire their creativity and art awareness which is useful to any field of study that they may pursue for their future.

In your opinion how important is art in Myanmar?

What are the future plans for Trish Gallery? Any future exhibitions in the pipeline? We plan to exhibit 6 shows in the coming season from September 2015 to February 2016, on the first Saturday of every month. Each exhibit will run for 9 days. One special feature exhibition is a "80+90" Art Show, which will be on the 5th of September 2015 and will exhibit artists who are over 80 years old. How do you curate? For each exhibition what are you trying to display?

We collect and share artwork for all art lovers. We support both well known and up and coming artists. We encourage young artists to create modern and contemporary ideas.

We collect artworks on Realism, Modern and Contemporary. The decision to collect a painting is based on subject, colour, tone and brush work which are visible in each and every painting. We

started. With Thingyan being bang in the middle of this period, it is extremely good work. We’re really pleased with how it has all worked out. As for the challenges, I think the business model is definitely something different compared to what the rest of the market currently offers, although not something completely alien to the world. Prioritising a consistent, quick service; catering to the takeaway crowd; restricting the menu to only cakes, pastries and beverages; stripping the décor down to its bare bones rather than elaboration; focusing on freshness, quality and consistency – these were all things that caused raised eyebrows when we first proposed them but I think our timing is right on this.

The

Press Office CafĂŠ Tell us more about the delicious cakes people can expect to feast on?

A new café is on the scene with a mouthwatering selection of cakes and full-bodied coffee beverages. Sibling team Ellise and Eugene Lim spill the beans on their hopes to stir-up Yangon’s trendy café scene with their produce, whilst also offering an in-house gallery space to colour the growing arts scene. So what’s The Press Office Café all about? Myanmar shares our love for great food, companionship and life. We love the look of minimalistic cafés in Europe, Australia and the Americas and want to offer a hip, ethical lounge hangout spot for emerging local youths and expats. We love the concept of the café historically being at the heart of a large part of creativity. You had people like Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso pitching up at their favourite cafés not just for the refreshments, but to chat with others and also enjoy a state of solitude. We want to bring all these concepts to Myanmar with a delicious selection of freshly baked cakes and locally sourced coffee and see how it kicks off. Our doors will be open to everyone from people grabbing a takeaway coffee on their lunch breaks, others looking for a space to unwind with a book and a latte and a spot for friends and family to catch up. But our real dream is to see it become a space for intellectual, artistic, liter-

What are your hopes for the business? Basically we want to be Myanmar’s no. 1 café home grown and made successful by the local people themselves.

ary and musical expression. Hopefully it brings a new breath of fresh air to the Yangon cafĂŠ scene which everyone can enjoy.

Where did the inspiration to create a café with an exhibition space come from? In London we met the team from a social enterprise called Café Art who had a stand in Spitalfields Market. We were very much inspired by the concept behind their work which was to engage with independent cafés to use them as an exhibition space for displaying art and photography done by London’s homeless population. It was really heart warming. In the future we hope to be able to make our walls available for exhibition use – we could work with organisations to host events to raise funds or help to sell merchandise to support worthwhile causes. It’s something we hope to have fun with while having a clear purpose to help the local community. It’s also our way of being in touch with the community in which we do business. We’ve set up an easel and provided brushes and paint, and we’ve had people start painting quite spontaneously. A space filled with an eclectic mix of people and projects would be really cool. Galleries have been popping up everywhere and Yangon is bursting with creativity.

People love to indulge themselves don’t they? Treat themselves to a helping of apple crumble or a slice of our chocolate orange cake with a muffin on the side. Our banana breads and brownies have also been selling extremely well. Our baking ingredients show Myanmar at its best and we’re keeping it as local as possible with local suppliers. We’re then fusing them with Western baking techniques to tempt customers with delicious pastries and cakes which are freshly baked on a daily basis.

What are the benefits and challe-nges of opening a business in Myanmar? Benefits wise, the people we’ve worked with to make this happen have been great. From our landlord to our contractor to the business services firm that helped us with the administration. We took possession of this unit on the 2nd of March which gave us two months to get a fully-fledged café

Where are you sourcing your coffee beans from?

Like with our baking, we’re keeping it local with our beverages to show what Myanmar’s local producers have to offer. There are two main varieties of coffee – Arabica and Robusta. Robusta grows more easily in Myanmar but generally isn’t as fragrant as Arabica, and usually turns out a little more acidic. But as the name suggests it’s the more robust of the coffee varieties. Arabica is slightly harder to source, but it gives the flavours that we’re familiar with from western coffee shops. We primarily source our coffees from Element Coffee, who also run Coffee Circles on Dhamazedi Road - given that they’re the most reliable source of supply of local beans we can get. Additionally, they batch roast coffees themselves which means we can get top quality roasts every time.

Soap for Hope the new Novotel initiative

“Soaps can save lives” exclaims Stefan Phang with a big smile, while showing Luke Orphanage's children and volunteers how to cut and mix Novotel-Yangon Max's used soaps. Stefan is Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility director at Diversey Sealed Air, Novotel's supplier of cleaning products. He came all the way from Singapore to teach them how to recycle the hotel's soaps. Novotel organised this science demo in Luke Orphanage and in Novotel to teach the orphan children about hygiene and food safety, as part of a bigger project called “Soap for Hope”. Opened just a few months ago, Novotel-Yangon Max has already kickstarted several initiatives to help the environment and the disadvantaged. With the theme “Nothing is lost, everything is transformed”, its sustainable development programme “Planet 21” is aiming to prevent wastage, provide livelihoods and give a contribution to the health and safety of people in need. Victor Joyeux, Novotel's Food and Beverages assistant manager and Planet 21 champion explains their future strategy for “Soap for Hope” designed in assiociation with Diversey Sealed Air: “Novotel will deliver the recycled soaps to the orphanage. Then, volunteers will reprocess the old soaps into new soaps, using a soap press, provided by Diversey Care. One portion of these soap bars will be used by the orphans and some will be distributed freely in the community. Novotel Yangon Max will also buy back some of the soaps in order to support the orphanage”. Reverend Han Ding, the manager of the Luke Orphanage, is currently taking care of 15 orphan children, together with his wife. Some of them were accompanied to the orphanage by their relatives, others were found by the Reverend, during his journeys around the country. Children are between 9 and 16 years old and they are coming from all over Myanmar (Yangon, Chin, Rakhine, Kalay, Sagaing). The orphanage provides them with food, accommodation and schooling. After high

school the Reverend hopes that the most talented will have the possibility to continue their studies in College. “Selling soaps can contribute towards buying school materials and clothes” says the Reverend. He also encourages MY Yangon readers to pay a visit to Luke Orphanage and become soap recycling volunteers. The Luke Orphanage is located in Insein (715 Takaung Lane, East Ywama, phone: 09420020109). Recycled soaps are cut into small pieces, sanitised using a Diversey's product, mixed with scented ingredients, like: camomile, lavender, rosemary or other herbs and reshaped with a press machine. “We should add lemongrass. It is mosquito repellent” suggests Stefan. He is also volunteering for the International Child Protection Network (ICPN) and for him recycling soaps is a step towards combatting child sexual exploitation. He takes it as his personal duty: “Sadly, many children are sold by parents out of desperation when one parent becomes sick and the rest of the family runs out

of money. Some diseases spread because people do not have soaps. Awareness of hygiene and food safety from children onwards starts by using soap”. Stefan indeed calculated that a 400 room hotel can waste around 4 tonnes of

recycled soap per year. “Hotels are happy to give us their recycled soaps” he adds. Diversey Sealed Air acted as an intermediary between hotels and communities in need in several places all over the world. They facilitated distribution of hotel recycled soaps to HIV-positive communities in Cambodia, old hotel bedlinen to typhoon survivals in Philippines and they had other projects in South Africa and Thailand. “We can not speak the same language, but children understand the language of the heart” admits Stefan. In the future, Victor would like to create a showcase of the recycled soaps in Novotel to increase public awareness and also organise a charity market of arts and crafts created by children of Yangon's orphanages. Novotel had also a Trashion day, to explore the innovative use of dry trash as fashion clothes and a creativity day to recycle plastic bottle. Victor is optimistic: “More guests stay at our hotel, more soaps we can provide to people in need!”.

Fun Science For KIDS

In Yangon

Applications

The dramatic surge in smart phone ownership has created a rich breeding ground for foreign and local app developers. For a majority of users, app exploration begins and ends with Facebook and Viber which are the current heavyweights in Myanmar, but a host of locally based developers have been busy creating apps which place the needs of the local community at heart.

Cycle around the countryside and track your physiology Organise a family outing, rent a bike and explore Yangon’s countryside. While parents can track distance, time, speed, calories and much more using one of the most complete apps for cyclists “Cyclemeter GPS” (for iphones), children will have lots of fun outdoors.

Practice your maths in the market Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division: what’s better than a local market to practice all of them? Are you able to quickly sum up on the top of your head? If you bargain how much you can spare? How much do you expect as change?

Visit the Zoo Do you want to get up and close with some exotic animals? Why not spending an afternoon at the zoo with some pen and paper painting your favourite creatures? You can also learn their names and try to figure out which are carnivores and which are herbivores. Dinga

Foodie Myanmar

Htoo Myint Naung, the visionary behind Dinga, has a clear insight into the short comings of the industry after having launched Technomation – a company which pioneered mobile apps in Myanmar. He said: “Users are willing to pay for apps; they just don’t have trustworthy options available to them. A very small percentage of the population own credit cards which hugely closes the market to a much wider audience. Carrier billings are often horror stories. And expecting developers to continue physically selling their apps to shops and then collecting money at the end of the month is impractical." “Dinga is simply an app store for apps and other digital content. Download the app, create an account and then add credit to it with our scratch cards – no different from mobile phone top-up cards. We’ll also have credit card options but no doubt its initial success with users will be with the scratch cards.” Htoo and his business partner Kaung Sitt are gearing up to launch the scratch cards in the following months. Find out more about its nearing launch here: https://www.facebook. com/dingastore More info online at: http://www. dinga.com.mm/

Foodie Myanmar was launched from the fingertips of a hungry hearted duo who were inspired by the successes of restaurant finder apps in Singapore in Australia. Armed with a small team of developers, Gutu and his partner Okka launched Foodie Myanmar at the beginning of March with high hopes of seeing it become a go-to for both Yangon’s locals and visitors in their quest for top-notch nosh. Users can view complete profiles of restaurants; search using keywords, townships and cuisines; navigate restaurants based on GPS locations; stay up-to-date with hot deals, promotions and parties and be part of the dining community by posting reviews and ratings. Requirements: iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone iPad and iPod touch and can be purchased via iTunes. Give it a like and keep up to date at: https://www.facebook.com/ foodiemyanmar

HoHo-DeDe It was during last year’s monsoon downpours that Neal Robert, one of the three French founders of digital agency Synapse Original, felt a wave of inspiration to create something which could help local people by launching a taxi sharing community app. Neal said: “The cheapest taxi ride is no less than 1000 kyat and this is too expensive for a large majority of Burmese people. mClinicPlus huddled in bus shelters waiting a long time for buses with endless numbers of taxis driving by." “My idea was simple. Cut the taxi fares and the transportation barrier will be opened to a wider demographic which will also benefit the growing number of taxi drivers.” HoHo-DeDe, which translates to “from here to there” in Burmese, launched as an app and website service in May and has already accumulated over 1,000 likes on Facebook. Once registered, users can organise journeys in advance or opt for instant rides with both being dependent on the availability and chosen destination of other users. Another feature which adds to its community touch is the ladies only rides which were created as a security measure for women who may not feel comfortable sharing with other men they don’t know. Neal added: “Apps like this have been a huge hit in other countries. You have Cab With Me in New York and Maaxi in London and we believe that with the right marketing and in time, HoHo DeDe can be just as popular.” For more information you can contact: contact@hoho-dede.com Register at: http://www.hoho-dede. com/ Give it a like and keep update with https://www.facebook.com/ hohodede.myanmar

Launched in mid-May, mClinicPlus Myanmar is designed to remedy the time consuming process involved in making appointments to see specialist doctors in private clinics. The 23-year-old entrepreneur behind the app, William Moe, was hit with the idea after his father suffered from minor kidney complications and had to endure a lengthy wait before seeing a doctor. William explained, “with mClinicPlus you can search by available doctors or the clinics themselves. We have three clinics registered with the app and around 200 doctors. Users can see the daily schedules of the doctors, clinic opening times, address and if they want to make an appointment, they can make a call to the clinic through the app itself.” The clinics currently registered are SSC Hospital, Bahosi Clinic and the Asia Royal Cardiac and Medical Centre. William aims to secure up to three more clinics by the end of this year. William also hopes to be able to add an online booking service to the app and launch it in Mandalay and wider Myanmar. Available to install via the Google Play Store. Keep up to date with the app on Facebook: https://www.facebook. com/pages/MClinicPlus/8031294530 83858?fref=ts See what’s included in the app on the website: http://mclinicplus.com/

Padonmar

Shining a light back on Myanmar Fine Dining There is a constant stream of new restaurants popping up and being promoted all over Yangon championing many different brands of fine cuisine - French, Italian, Thai, Indian, Japanese, the list is endless. Against this wall off choice and promotion, it is very easy to forget the varied, excellent and delicious Myanmar fine dining restaurants on offer.

sour and Indian food is very spicy. Myanmar food is inbetween this." Looking through the à la carté and set menu it is easy to see this comparison; hearty curry mains are sandwiched between light and fresh spiced salads. Myanmar food is actually very healthy at its core with the majority of its traditional dishes being based around freshwater fish, chicken and vegetables. Two of Padonmar's most popular dishes are freshwater fish. One is the Hilsa Surprise, which is a fresh water fish called Hilsa, with a close to sardine taste, the fish has many bones but when it is steamed over a long period of time the bones become soft and can be eaten. The other is butterfish, which is so named because the meat melts in your mouth like butter. Padonmar restaurant uses only real butterfish "some restaurants use Irrawaddy butterfish" explains U Sonny "it is tasty but it doesn’t melt". The most popular dish at Padonmar is the fresh water prawns which sell at 20 USD a piece and are hugely popular with Asian tourists. Another worry about Myanmar cuisine can be the health and hygiene standards, however at Padonmar restaurant they exemplify the health, hygiene and quality regulations that the Myanmar Restaurant Association is pushing across the country. U Sonny admits this education process elsewhere has been slow "it's tough to get restaurants to change when business is good", he says, referring to the multitude of street side restaurants and vendors that sell their food to crowds of happy customers every day.

Shining the light back on Myanmar fine dining is Padonmar Restaurant Owner and Chairman of the Myanmar Restaurant Association, U Sonny Aung Khin. "Myanmar restaurants are not fully recognized", says U Sonny, "I want to break the idea that Myanmar restaurants are not fine dining". "Myanmar food is misunderstood as being too oily and too hot or spicy. This wrong concept is learned from the tradition to put extra oil in visitors curry as sign of wealth and welcome. At Padonmar we use no MSG and less oil but still maintain the

taste." The food at Padonmar is certainly delicious and the service is sharp and attentive particularly in the luxury upstairs area which has four separate rooms which can be reserved for private functions. The rooms are popular with foreign and local businessmen alike who flock to experience a taste of Myanmar and Thai food in international standards of comfort. That said few people know what to expect when first trying Myanmar food, but as U Sonny describes "Thai food is very extreme, very hot or

But any reservations you may have about Myanmar dining should not be applied across the board. Indeed restaurants like Padonmar supply quality international standard fine dining serving Myanmar food, right here, right now. On top of this, fresh water prawns aside, the prices are very reasonable with set menus starting from 10 USD. So next time you want to treat yourself to a special evening you need not look for fine foreign flavours to tickle your taste buds, you will find there can be an equally luxurious taste of Myanmar waiting for you to explore instead. 105/107, Kha-Yae-Bin Road, Dagon Tsp – 01 538 895, 09 7324 2410 Sponsored by Padonmar Restaurant

IS THE pride of Myanmar people and the most beautiful symbol of Yangon… yes, you got it! I am talking about Shwedagon Pagoda! Its impressive golden stupa is visible from almost every part of the city and it is worth visiting more than once, but among all the pagodas, bells and Buddha’s statues have you ever noticed how many mythological creatures can be found in this beautiful religious complex? Shwedagon is protected more than by just the pagoda’s security staff … most of these creatures combine characteristics of humans, animals and divine beings, and most of them have supernatural powers. Last time I visited Shwedagon I went to look for them and I learned some of their stories. So let yourself be enchanted by the otherworldly atmosphere of Shwedagon!
