Editor's Letter Transport within a city is a complex yet fascinating occurrence; it is relied upon by every individual, business, organization and affects almost everything to do with a city. For some, travelling can be a chore, others a pleasure; even when choosing the same mode of transport, experiences can vary hugely. Cities are characterised and made unique by their transport systems and Yangon follows suit. This issue focuses on all the city's different transportation and how it is utilised, functions and in doing so tries to open a dialogue between those who provide these services and those who use them. We have interviewed taxi drivers, tri-shawists, an award-winning traffic policeman, a private jet company, an e-bike salesman and a variety of commuters. Hearing everyone's stories and perspectives, enjoying the beautiful illustration on the cover and stopping to think about transport in Yangon has given me a new understanding and appreciation for its unique transportation and the people who support it.

Fast becoming a cosmopolitan destination, Yangon and its distinctive city characteristics reflect not only an interesting and varied past but a blossoming and booming future. Carved-up into three main areas (downtown, midtown and uptown) the city is easy to navigate (traffic depending!) and full of variety.

Kandawgyi Nature Park is made up of three different parks, all surrounding the Kandawgyi Lake, each with a different character and attractions. Karaweik Garden has a great playground, including a rope bridge, a small zoo, many restaurants, and spaces for concerts and unplugged bands. Bogyoke Park has the Utopia Tower, a great viewing platform with views over the park and city. Myay Padathar Island has a freshwater fish garden, an Agricultural Museum, and many different species of trees found in Myanmar. The park's crowning glories are the wooden walkway over the lake, and the majestic Karaweik Royal Barge. For a spiritual retreat, there is the colourful Su Taung Pyae Aung Chantha Dat Paung Su Zedi on Bagan Lone Island.

WE LOVE Latha is a bustling, beeping, shoulder-bumping township typical of the hive-like busyness of downtown Yangon. Unique in its strong connection with Yangon’s Sino-Burmese community; it forms the main part of Yangon’s Chinatown-made up of areas like 19th Street, as well as many Clan Halls and Chinese Temples. The strong Chinese connection has driven the growth of a variety of shops and restaurants serving up exotic goods from the orient. More recently this taste for foreign flavours has seen the appearance of many other cuisines from Japanese to American/ Western– a natural expression of Yangon embracing things foreign and new. Apart from culinary delights there are temples,
churches, mosques, hardware stores, phone shops, electrical
appliance markets, laundry services and much more. Yangon
General Hospital and two of downtown Yangon’s finest schools are also based in this thriving area. In Latha you are never short of things to see and try.
EAT 19th Street is the centre of Yangon’s Chinatown and boasts a great selection of Chinese and BBQ restaurants. Kosan Snack & Bar offers 1000 Kyats mojitos and is for those looking to kick off a big night and then wake up the next day with your head pounding harder than knitting with chop-sticks! Kaung Myat is in a yellow/green old building next to Kosan. The restaurant is widely accepted as the best food on the street No. 110, 19th Street Yummy Restaurant and BBQ has Myanmar beer on tap and shows the English Premier League games. The restaurant is tiled and cleaner than average with lots of fans. There are english and photo-illustrated menus. The chicken balls are nice and doughy. Last restaurant at the top of 19th Street Win Restaurant and Shwe Mingalar Restaurant both sprawl across both sides of the street. At Shwe Mingalar the staff all wear matching red polo shorts and you can hand-pick your BBQ from a mix of chicken, beef, vegetables and lobster. Win Restaurant-01 536 982. Shwe Mingalar Restaurant, No. 105, 19th Street-01 251 341 Chun Mai is a charming boutique restaurant located in one of the older atmospheric buildings it is run by a gaggle of friendly SinoBurmese women who cook up traditional Chinese food.No. 95 (B), 19th Street An alternative to 19th Street is Latha Street; full of bright shop lights and crumbling concrete. Soe Pyi Swar Vegetarian Centre serves up an endless choice of vegetarian food that ranges from artificial duck to prawns. If mock meat doesn’t appeal there are other more straightforward options, such as kai lan and a delicious sour and crunchy bean sprout and vermicelli salad. Everything is superbly fresh and is accompanied by home-made pickled and sliced cucumbers. No. 136 Latha Street
LATHA Oishii Sushi is a popular sushi restaurant; the menus are easy to follow and look out for the specials advertised on the walls. There is the standard mix of sushi, sashimi and rolls as well as an excellent seafood salad. The mayonnaise pawns are great, the sweet crunchy roll is stand out good and the service plates are pretty stylish. A freshly sliced, easy on the wallet option. No. 98 Latha Street-09 734 94 207 Cherry Mann is one of the most popular restaurants in Latha, maybe even in Yangon. It is an Indian Restaurant serving curries and BBQ No 78-80, Latha Street-01 374 891 California Cake and Bakery is an American style diner that serves up a truck-stop menu popular with the local customers. Any American visitors might find the food a little shy of what there used to, but it’s still worth a try. No. 129, Latha Street-01 250 940 Street food! There is a 24 hour street bar which serves up ice cold Myanmar beer deep into the midnight hours. If you feel a bit peckish you can also order up some midnight Myanmar snacks of rice, noodles or chicken - all spiced up to the nines. Corner of Lanmadaw and Anawratha Street On Latha’s far Eastern edge is another group of stalls serving up mostly samosas and other Burmo-Indian fusion fare. Shop The Metro Dry Cleaning and Laundry has cheap laundry services and an English speaking shopkeeper. No.161-163, Latha Street-01 250 867 Dong Jing DVD. This shop has a wide range of English language and global cinema films and series. No. 157, Latha Street-01 242 427 Hardware Street Market. A selection of stalls selling everything from plugs to pins. There are also stalls that do repairs. Anawratha Road, 21st Street to 22nd Street. 22nd Street contains a number of electrical sign shops (Upper Block) 23rd Street (Upper Block). This street has a variety of electrical shops which sell sound systems, fans and many other household appliances. Tun Electronic Trading Co. Ltd sells professional audio systems, video displays, power stabilizers and other electronic systems. There are two branches. No. 19-20 Anawratha Road and No.3945 Anawratha–01 241 993 Theingyi Zey is the biggest, local market in the city and one of the oldest, being built in 1905. Roughly 1156 shops and stalls make up the traditional wet and dry market (Block A) that sells anything from fishery products to dry market (Block B) commodities like textiles.

Places to see and visit Clan Halls-Kongsi Kongsi or "clan halls" are benevolent organizations founded by overseas Chinese communities for individuals with the same surname. Kongsi were utilised by overseas Chinese to overcome social and economic difficulties. There are roughly 80 clan associations in Myanmar, many of which are based in Latha. Some of the most famous are: The Long Shan Tang Clan Association, based in the Hokkien Chinese clan temple of the same name. Members of the Tseng and Khoo clans from Fujian Province founded the temple in 1877. 53 Anawratha Road Ying Fo Fui Kun, a Hakka Chinese Clan Association, housed in the Yangon Chinatown branch of Sein Gay Har on 23rd street. The Fukienese Association, a Hokkien community’s clan association, located in the Kheng Hock Kong Temple. In coalition with the temple they have established a free clinic, have a social welfare program for elderly citizens, offer free mandarin classes for young Chinese Burmese and even financially support Burmese social projects; for example construction work on Sule Pagoda. The Myanmar Yangon Yunnannese Association, was the earliest Yangon Yunnannese Clan Hall founded in 1911 and originally located at 30 Latha Street. In 1994, the organisation moved its headquarters to Hlaing Mingalar Hall in Yangon’s Mayangone Tsp. The Myanmar Thye Guan Ong Association represents overseas Chinese from Thye Guan township in China’s Hokkien Province who have the surname Ong (the second most common among Myanmar’s Chinese community). They are based at Sin Oh Dan Street. Formally founded in 1910 the organisation helped fellow clan members look for jobs, supported in times of difficulty, housed the sick, and even took care of funerals for the poor.

A Hokkien Chinese clan association maintains the temple and it attracts mostly Hokkien and Hakka worshipers. Corner of Sintodan Street and Strand Road Guanyin Gumiao Temple is the second famous Chinese Buddhist Temple in Latha Township. Also known as the Guangdong Guanyin Temple it was founded before Kheng Hock Keong Temple in 1823 by the Cantonese community of Yangon, but was destroyed by a fire in December 1855. This amazing group of drivers and now friends provides some insight into the challenging job of being a taxi driver in Yangon. Daw San San- 09251043750 Daw San San is one of the few female taxi drivers of Yangon and has been valiantly driving her taxi for the last two years. As a mother of two and wife, she sticks to a rigid working schedule of 6am to 6pm. As life in Yangon becomes more expensive, San San decided to be a taxi driver to help support her family. San San asked an aunty for help, who bought the taxi for her when her uncle died and she was left some inheritance. San San decided on this particular job for numerous reasons-the pay can be good, but most significantly she can decide on her own hours-something very important, as a parent. Another benefit is that she doesn't have to wait till the end of the month to get paid-money comes in every day; but not as much as it used to. Before, San San might earn on average 30,000 kyats per day (after 10,000 spent on fuel), now it is only 10,000-20,00 kyats. San San explains this is because of the competition. There is a new series of taxis given their licenses-10,000 for every new series. This system started with "A" and now Yangon is on "E". San San is clearly a 'people person' and dreams of one day having her own hotel that she can run as manager; this is her true passion, having previously worked at The Sheraton Hotel, Brisbane, Australia (she returned to Myanmar when her mother became ill). San San loves her job as a taxi driver because she gets to work and interact with a variety of people all day and share stories; plus when times are good she can earn up to $600 per month and still take more breaks than other jobs allow. The worst aspect of San San's job is not surprisingly, the traffic. Perhaps one day, San San's other dream might come true and she can beat the boredom factor of waiting in traffic by giving Burmese lessons to her passengers?! San San is full of bright ideas-another being her take on the traffic problems of Yangon. She believes if there was better organization and planning of where bus stops are located; better monitoring of street stands and keeping trishaws to less busy areas then the inner-city congestion could be alleviated. Then there is the idea of a unified taxi force, dispatched, directed and organized by central control centres. As for the introduction of meters-this would be good, especially when taking foreign customers as it could prevent disputes and the drivers could get paid according to the petrol they used or time they spent in traffic. San San has great insight into the difficulties of Yangon taxi drivers' relationship with foreign customers. She explains that clearly communication issues are a key factor but also that some foreigners won't pay the fare when the taxi driver makes a mistake and takes them to the wrong location, even if that driver has used up a lot of fuel and time. Many drivers are scared about taking foreign customers as they can be less understanding or that they presume drivers are unfairly upping their rates, purely because they think they can get more money from foreigners. The drivers think that foreigners expect that

the rates are always too high and then as a result never tip. This is clearly a complicated issue but one that arises out of a lack of understanding on both sides. The foreigner misconceives the price as too high, even when it is fair and so always must bargain; the driver pre-empting this bargaining, aims high; and so the cycle continues. Daw San San cannot say for sure if things will change for taxi drivers in the following years-but she hopes so.

Ko Hla Htay – 0973243980 Ko Hla Htay likes the freedom that comes with being a taxi driver and also really likes to drive. He owns his own taxi and has been driving for 25 years; working from 6 am to 8 pm. He feels in general Myanmar people are very hospitable and want to help foreigners – so he always tries to do this; he has never had a problem with foreigner customers. He thinks there should be better road planning for road expansion projects, because in his mind, sometimes they create more traffic than they prevent. He would also like to see a sky train and an underground transport system to ease traffic. Finally, he wishes there were more official taxi ranks as parking spots are limited.
U Kyan – 09420174544 Has been a taxi driver for 18 years and works 7am till 7 pm. He sometimes works at night and owns his own car. Foreign customers are OK-he has never had a problem with them; however, he has had a problem with ghosts! One night he was driving back to Yangon after dropping someone off out of town. In the distance, he saw a young girl by the side of the road, dressed in a short skirt; she then raised her hand, as if to call him to stop. As he approached and slowed down, she transformed in front of his eyes into an old lady with no teeth and let out an evil laugh. He wisely didn’t stop, he just sped up and kept on driving.
Uncle Hit – 09420701697 The uniquely named Uncle Hit (U Nyan Tun), is very charming. He has been a taxi driver for 25 years but says the popularity of taxis didn’t kick off until 1996 when the government announced the “Myanmar Business Year” which triggered a taxi boom. In the beginning, he had a 3-wheeled taxi, which used to be very popular and it was very easy to make money. With even only 3 customers you could make a profit; now he finds the cars are better but the traffic is worse. Uncle Hit rents his car from an owner- his car is gas so the rent is 20,000 kyats per day. Petrol cars are cheaper to rent-often 10,000 kyats but the fuel cost is higher – easily 10,000 kyats per day. A gas car may cost more to rent, but only requires 3,000 kyats per day in fuel. Even so, Uncle Hit frequently only makes 3,000 – 5,000 kyats profit per day. To rent a car first you have to put forward a 200-500 USD deposit then sign a 6-month
to one-year contract with the owner, and then you must pay the owner what you owe him at the end of each month. Uncle Hit has had a few problems with foreigners but this mainly happens because of communication issues. More interestingly, one Saturday, a pregnant customer gave birth in the back of his taxi. He hoped this miraculous event and his good deed of assisting the lady would bring him good luck but unfortunately the next day his headlights were stolen! So much for that! The animated and interesting Uncle Hit, would have liked to have been an actor if he hadn't become a taxi driver.
Ko Htay Aung – 0925311327 For Ko Htay Aung the best thing about his job is when there are lots of customers and he makes good profit, the worst is when there is lots of traffic and no customers. Ko Htay Aung explains about this group of taxi drivers who all work for Mandalay FM as traffic watchdogs. They are part of a public donation group of 20 taxi drivers who report on traffic and accidents for the radio station. Initially Mandalay FM had staff members going out to report on traffic now they just use a select group of taxi drivers. The reports are made 7:30 am to 12 midday, 4 to 7 pm on weekdays and 11 am to 4 pm weekends. The reports are even listened to and used by police to locate accidents. The group would like to see a taxi drivers union but say the problem is no one can agree on how to do it. There was an idea that taxi drivers should pay 10,000 kyats per month into a fund
which could be used by members to fix damaged cars and pay for maintenance etc; however not everyone wanted to pay so the idea fell by the wayside.
Ko San Shay – 0931348668 Ko San Shay whose name means long hair (for obvious reasons once you meet him!) has been part of the Mandalay FM public donation group for one year. He explains that to get your taxi driver's license costs 20,000 kyats per year. When you register, your car must be perfect. He explains the licenses are in English to help foreigners and you can track down any taxi driver by his license number. He recommends you take a note of it every time you get into a taxi (to the left-in front of the front passenger seat) in case you lose something or have any trouble; then you can quote the number to the police and they can help you. He would like to see taxi meters introduced but thinks they wouldn’t work because local customers are used to paying a fixed price and won’t pay extra; if for example you are stuck in traffic and the meter runs high. Five years ago there was an attempt to introduce meters but it failed due to exactly this problem and others. Each driver had to pay 200 USD for a meter and installation but the introduction failed to catch on and they are now not used.

art How has the gallery/art scene changed in the last five years? The most obvious change is simply the number of new galleries on the scene now. Compared to 2010, when I first became associated with the gallery, the art scene has grown substantially and largely for the better, with a busier exhibition schedule around town and more art events generally. Given the increasing number of exhibitions being staged and all of the new cars on the road these days, it would be impossible now to see each exhibition, so naturally competition has begun to increase. There's still plenty of room, and a great need, for more venues for creative expression to be on display. We would also love to see more people outside of the big cities engaging with contemporary arts, and have some plans to that effect. What are the limitations or advantages to the current Myanmar arts and cultural scene? One of the major limitations of course is the spiraling rent costs in Yangon. This creates barriers not only for new galleries, many of which are obliged to rent space, but also imperils artists' livelihoods, which are generally far from secure to begin with. An ongoing challenge is the woeful state of arts education across the country, and the dearth of public institutions, such as museums or bodies that provide grants and residencies to artists, that can provide the level of support needed to maintain a vibrant community of artists around the country.
PANSODAN GALLERY MY Yangon talks to Kirt Mausert- a curator, researcher and managing director at Pansodan Gallery. How did both Pansodan Gallery and Pansodan Scene come to be? Pansodan Gallery was founded by Aung Soe Min (aka U Aung) and Nance Cunningham in 2008. It’s grown quite a bit-a second gallery space upstairs soon became filled and eventually used as a workshop. Later, Pansodan Scene was opened in 2012 as a space to put on more performances, events, gatherings, and collaborations. What sets these galleries apart from other Yangon galleries or even those further afield? One area where we’re different from many galleries in Yangon is that while we continue to be fortunate to have many foreign art lovers and collectors visit the gallery, we’ve never been chiefly orientated towards foreigners. Much of the support for the artists we represent comes from serious local collectors and art lovers, and we’ve worked hard to earn their trust and build relationships that are key to the sustainability of our artists’ careers. Less concretely, what sets Pansodan Gallery apart from most other Yangon galleries to me, are the values that the gallery’s 26 November 2014 My Yangon
founders and our curators bring to all of our projects, from an artist's solo exhibition to the recent Pansodan Embassy to the One Caucasus Art Festival near the borders of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Art galleries are of course places of business, but what all of us at Pansodan are passionate about are ideas, creativity, and fostering a community for the free exchange and development of both. I’d like to think that we represent a different approach to the idea that a gallery ought to be a place to shape elite tastes and promote a small cadre of celebrated artists. Everyone is welcome at Pansodan Gallery, and we are fortunate to work with a wide range of artists, from well-respected, established artists to up-and-coming artists seeking an audience. What have been some the most momentous exhibitions/ events? There have been a lot of great events in the time I've been associated with the gallery, but the Brighton Arts Festival in 2011 stands out to me. The gallery contributed works from several outstanding artists, and artist Zwe Yan Naing's portrait of a lady with a Burmese harp was featured on the festival circular's cover. Those were exciting times, since the number of international exhibitions featuring Burmese art were even rarer then.
Why is art important in a place like Myanmar? There are few places where art is more important, more vital to the well-being of society. Art is not something that is only for the wealthy to signal their privilege to other privileged types, though that is certainly something it also is, for better or worse. Art (the good kind, at least) is a powerful antidote to convention and conventional thinking. In a moment in this country where so many people are in a rush to replicate the very same social and economic models that are failing so many elsewhere, what better tool than art to remind people of their own potential, to challenge them to see their world and themselves in ways that the state, businesses, and media haven't, or won't? Access to art here will, for the foreseeable future at least, depend on patrons with the spare capital to support the work of artists and spaces for engaging with their creations. We share a vision of bringing art outside the purview of the elite and in the emancipatory and empowering potential of art and creative thought and expression, and the sooner the better. In the meantime, we'll keep working with great artists to keep the Yangon arts scene a lively and inclusive one.
preparing a group exhibition my personal preferences are less important than striving to put together works from different artists which an audience can lose themselves in. I enjoy exhibitions where the works on display seem to be speaking to each other in some way; either by sharing a common theme or simply by sharing the virtue of being there, now. That's what makes working with contemporary art and artists so exciting. You begin to get a feel for the pulse of a moment in history through a very different lens than even the written word affords. As for exciting and interesting artists emerging in the contemporary art scene now, there are simply too many to list. Personally, and this shifts by the week, sometimes in the course of an evening (particularly if that evening is also a Tuesday), I'm very excited to see younger artists like Eain Aye Kyaw, Tamalar, and Zwe Yan Naing continue to mature as artists, producing amazing, creative work. Who have been the most influential or interesting artists who have paved the way for the Myanmar arts? When U Khin Maung Yin passed recently, the arts scene lost a legend and a link to the one of the high water marks in modern Burmese painting and visual culture. He, along with the seminal figure of Bagyi Aung Soe, Paw Oo Thet, and U Ba Gyi, to name only a few, have long been hailed as visionaries and leaders within the arts community. I also have to mention artist Soe Naing, whose unique talent I think underscores the tremendous depth of talent of the community of artists painting today, and their courage and perseverance. What are the plans for Pansodan Art gallery in the future? As I mentioned, plans are in the works to bring contemporary arts to more people outside of the major urban spaces. At the moment, both Aung Soe Min and Nance Cunningham are engaged with various professional commitments, but we have a core group of dedicated staff that I'll be working with for the foreseeable future to help expand our reach into new communities and to maintain and build on the role that Pansodan Gallery has played over the years. What is the company's background? Wah Wah company limited was established in 1992, by my father, U Ohn Myint. We are a Yangon-based, family-owned enterprise. My father is an entrepreneur and Wah Wah Co. was his start-up company. We started off small, really small. As an aviation ground handling company, we would get only one business jet per year, now we get 300 jets per year for handling. Our family started from zero, and here we are now-a real rags to riches story. How did Myanmar MJets come to be? How long have you been open for business? MJets is a Bangkok-based company, with two shareholders- William E. Heinecke, billionaire, and founder of Minior International Plc. and Kirit Shah, the entrepreneur of Precious-shipping Plc. In March 2010, the company was the first and only fixed-based operation in Thailand in providing services such as, but not limited to; aircraft charter, and private jet terminal in Don Muang International Airport.

Cessna Citation Bravo has a medical configuration within the aircraft. Moreover, MJets is managing six jets, a Gulfstream G650, (two) Gulfstream 550, and another Cessna Citation Bravo. What sort of clients do you have? Where does most of your business come from? Our clients are mostly foreign businessmen, high net worth individuals, the wealthy tourist, celebrities and patients seeking medical treatment in neighbouring countries. We estimate that 10% predicted future clients will be for air ambulance services. Our business comes from all over the world, mostly Thailand and Singapore, but we have had jets from the UK, the US, from Australia, and also the Middle East. What sort of air ambulance services are provided through Myanmar MJets? MJets air ambulance offers world-class bed to bed aero-medical flights throughout Asia. There is full medical equipment on board (intensive care unit); a loading
system for immobile patients to reach the hospital safely and easily; a medical team consisting of 1 flying doctor and up to two nurses and ground ambulance transfers at airside on departure and arrival. How has air travel/transport changed in this region over the last few years? Private jet movements through Myanmar, mostly via Yangon, are expected to grow, and has been growing over the past two years. What do they do? In Yangon, we have about 20 staff, we have a director for charter sales, ground handlers- who monitor and take care of the private jets that land, by doing services for the plane, such as refueling, lavatory service, cabin cleaning; as well as any and all services required of the aircraft crew.

What's the longest journey someone has taken so far or could take? They can fly direct, nonstop to Heathrow Airport in the UK; so basically to Europe non-stop.
How do you see you company growing? What are your plans for the future? Air traffic is set to increase, so we will have more and more clients as the country progresses. In the future, we would like to set up another lounge and terminal in Nay Pyi Taw Airport, but this is still pending and a long ways to go in the distant future.
