THE ALLURE O F T H E AT L A N TA CRAFTSMAN STYLE BUNGALOW Atlanta Nandina Designers John Ishmael and Jessie LaFalce were hired by Craftsman Bungalow homeowners to create two completely unique

interiors. Both achieved stunning results which in turn led to very satisfied clients. Since the late 1800s Americans have embraced the classic simplicity of the Craftsman Bungalow. The word “bungalow” is derived from the Indian Bengali term bangla which refers to a low house surrounded by porches. The American bungalow first found its way into the United States in the 1890s through California. The style was meant to be a repudiation of the Victorian era’s ostentatious display of wealth and costly collectibles.

Craftsman style paneled wainscoting and coffered ceilings are a perfect backdrop for the transitional mirrored buffet and rustic trestle style table Ishmael chose to anchor the dining room.

Ishmael chose to accessorize using classic symmetry – a pair of lamps and a pair of ottomans with a refined Asian sofa table.

JE SSI E’ S DESI GN

The Craftsman Bungalow meshed perfectly the simple artistic interiors espoused by the 1900s Arts and Crafts movement with the classic exteriors of the Bungalow. The Craftsman Bungalow began popping up in Atlanta around the 1920s and remains to this day an enduring neighborhood fixture throughout the city. The one-story layout of a bungalow, along with the mix of handcrafted stone, woodwork and mixed materials, is an ideal choice for either the homeowner who wants to mix in a little more modern interior or the traditionalist who wants to remain true to the simple classic architecture. The allure of the Craftsman Style Bungalow will never go out of style especially among those lucky enough to make it their Atlanta home. A shagreen and gold sofa table is asymmetrically accessorized and then paired with black cowhide ottomans in the modern interiors chosen for the bungalow designed by LaFalce. LaFalce’s client prefers a modern aesthetic with just a touch of glamour. The original fireplace was refaced with glass tile and a solid surface of white quartz forms a waterfall mantel. The eclectic layering of a large mirror, original art and collectible ceramic vases on the mantel finishes the look.

Wallpaper adds an immeasurable degree of style and visual interest to any room. The powder room, or bathroom, is an ideal place to start exploring this trend in your house ‌ it’s smaller and is easily balanced with neutral pieces, like a bathtub, toilet, and sink. Calming neutrals and cool tones work wonderfully for bathrooms, as they create a serene place to relax. Plus, for the wary homeowner, these more subdued color choices are easier to handle than a bright red patterned wall! THE POWDER ROOM IS A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN SPLURGE! We utilized a Hickory Chair Chest as the base for a custom-built vanity and paired it with beautiful foil wallpaper to create a stunning jewel box of a room. Story by Susan Victor

The one enduring legacy of the “Mad Men” series is the return of the in-home bar. So many classic scenes centered around the mystique of “the cocktail.” Setting a stylish and functional bar has become a design element that is not only glamorous but functional as well. A beautifully set bar adds a hint of sophistication to your home and to any event. It invites your guests in and sets the mood for festivity or quiet conversation. It’s always fun to meet for happy hour at the hottest spot in town – and now that “hot spot” can live right in the privacy of your own home. So let’s drink a toast to setting the bar!

THE STYLISH BAR Whether your bar is a permanent design fixture in your home, or an impromptu setup for a special event, here are five key elements to consider. U S E W H AT Y O U H AV E . An incredible bar does not have to be custom-built to the tune of thousands of dollars. The most stylish bars we have seen were often set up on an antique piece of furniture, an old wooden farm table, or on a beautiful bar cart that was the last-minute addition to a room. 1

CHOOSE BEAUTIFUL GLASSWARE. This is an element of the bar where you shouldn’t just make do. Find vintage glasses or cut crystal that expresses your personality and makes the bar sparkle with life. If you are a wine aficionado, choose incredible wine glasses to add to your bar. If cocktails are your thing, make sure you have the perfect rocks glassware. 2

Unique crystal decanters and ice buckets, along with horn handled bar tools, elevate the style factor of any bar setup.

M I X M AT E R I A L S . A beautiful bar is not just a bunch of reflective glass and metal. It is important to bring in several different elements like horn, brass, ceramics, wood and stone. Mixing materials allows the bar to look curated, rich, and collected. 3

4 SELECT DECANTERS, BAR TOOLS + T R A Y S T H A T M A K E A S T A T E M E N T. These elements are often the priciest pieces of outfitting your bar, but the investment is well worth it.

A LW AY S A D D C O N V E R S AT I O N P I E C E S . To really create a statement, you have to think beyond the functional. The wow factor of a beautiful bar is usually something beyond the tools, bottles, and glasses needed to make the perfect cocktail. This is your opportunity to express yourself. Think fresh flowers, books, urns, statues, serving bowls, cutting boards, vases, candles, and lamps. Even furniture and rugs around the bar add design elements that should be considered. Nothing is off limits if it fits the scale and style of the setting. 5

SHIPLAP

TREND OR TIMELESS?

Design by Sue Shannon // Photography by Heather Sargent // Story by Anna Young

If you’ve been keeping up with current home trends or following along with your favorite home improvement shows, you’re sure to have spotted shiplap more than a few times. But what exactly is shiplap … and why is this design trend so popular right now?

Types of Wood Paneling Commonly Mistaken for Shiplap:

W H AT I S S H I P L A P ?

Sheathing

Shiplap: Horizontal wooden planks with opposing rabbet joints (grooves) that overlap one another. The overlap is what creates that visible line and slight shadow — perfect for adding casual style and creating visual interest. Shiplap was originally used as an outdoor covering for buildings such as sheds, barns, and cabins due to its inexpensive cost and ease of installation. Shiplap was also commonly used to provide a hard interior wall surface before the days of sheetrock, and was typically covered up with wallpaper … never visible! The current trend of using exposed shiplap essentially takes something old and puts a modern, deconstructed spin on it.

Wooden boards that are easily nailed to the wall.

Tongue and Groove (T + G)

Typically used on floors and outdoors, these wooden boards fit snugly together. Very similar to shiplap and provides a comparable look once installed.

Beadboard

A type of T + G, but with smaller vertical boards that are usually connected on a panel.

IS SHIPLAP A TREND OR IS IT TIMELESS? The Verdict: Trend! While yes, we love shiplap for its aesthetics and style, its popularity right now is sure to fade over the next decade. However, as with any trend, it’s ultimately up to you to decide whether this is something you would like in your home or not. Just because something is “trendy” doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it for many, many years. Shiplap is typically thought of as a more rustic style design element, but you can make this trend fit any style home. White, crisp shiplap fits into a modern home nicely, whereas a natural finish pairs seamlessly with eclectic living.

BEFORE + AFTER

Budget Kitchen F O R A Big Cause Design by Sue Shannon and Susan Victor I have to admit that I rarely feel interior design is a higher calling. However, on rare occasions, our work as designers can feel like divine intervention! Not long ago, my business partner Sue Shannon and I were invited to consult on the kitchen update in the rectory that houses the priests in the Catholic parish where we are members. Built in the early 1900s adjacent to our original, historic, and architecturally beautiful church, the rectory is “an old lady – gracious, but a bit dowdy.” The Bad News: On our first walk-through of the space, Sue and I had the same reaction – this looked like a gut job! Original knob-and-tube wiring, appliances that either didn’t fit or were on their last leg, cabinetry from the ‘60s that was falling apart, linoleum floors, Formica countertops, and a single fluorescent light hanging in the middle of the room. While in the real world, a kitchen gut job even on the lower end of a budget can run anywhere from $50,000 to $75,000, our “divine” project had a budget of only $15,000 to $20,000. The Good News: Many goodhearted people are willing to give talent and expertise for free to support a cause they believe in. In this case, a retired executive with a long history of project management stepped forward and volunteered countless hours to insure its success. Smart,

BEFORE

//

Story by Susan Victor

organized, and ruthlessly deadline driven, he pulled together a dream team of volunteers: highly skilled electricians, plumbers, and master carpenters. That is the beauty of volunteer projects from the heart. Next, Sue and I had to develop a design that would work and be sustainable for another 20 to 25 years. New stock cabinetry from a big box store could run $15,000 alone, but we alerted our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore to be on the lookout for a donated set of solid wood cabinetry. As luck – or maybe divine intervention – would have it, a full set of stained cabinetry showed up within a week, and it was ours for the sweet price of $750. The cabinetry bases were painted navy, the uppers white, and new hardware installed. Removing a wall and inserting a beam allowed an open concept and space for a large island. We also incorporated some of the original aged wooden hutches and exposed brick to add character. Eliminating a majority of the labor expenses and soliciting donations allowed us to reduce the cash expenditures significantly. The project was completed in eight weeks for right at $20,000, far less than the real-world $50,000-$60,000. The newly renovated kitchen now fits the character of the original rectory and of our priest, who also happens to be an accomplished cook. This renovation project has everyone involved counting their blessings!

DESIGN CHALLENGE

Large Open Floor Plans Design by Sue Shannon

//

Photography by Shelly Marshall Schmidt

Nandina Designer Sue Shannon explains how to make a large open floor plan inviting + intimate! Recently I had the opportunity to collaborate with talented local architect Cam Scott on a renovation/build project involving a 1960s ranch home on a beautiful estate with rolling hills and sweeping views in Aiken, South Carolina. Our clients wanted to revitalize the old home, increase the living space, and incorporate large windows to capture the beautiful views. The plan was to keep the original footprint of the ranch intact, and then build a new wing that would house the master suite and a large garage. In order to connect the two wings and provide symmetry, a large rectangular great room and kitchen were added, with floor-to-ceiling windows on both exposed sides. The new open concept great room and kitchen opened to a large courtyard in the front, and onto a large terrace in the back. 26

Rendering by BethAnn Connor

The design challenge was how to fill this very large space with intimate, yet gracious seating, and incorporate large and small dining areas, while keeping the entire area open, fluid, and inviting. The first step was to build a space plan and provide the clients with a rendering that would allow them to visualize the space. This assured them that even a very large room that acted as a pass-through between wings could still be intimate and inviting. The finished product was just what the homeowners had hoped for – a space that worked for them as empty nesters but could expand and welcome home their large clan for casual family gatherings. These clients are hosting their only daughter’s wedding soon, on the beautiful grounds surrounding their new, lovingly created home. I can’t think of a better way to christen the project!

A large natural fiber rug acts as an anchor for the gracious seating arrangement. Two uniquely different sofas provide an eclectic contrast to the two pairs of chairs that are in line with the fireplace. This seating arrangement allows for either intimate conversations or large group gatherings.

Situated just off the enormous island that defines the kitchen footprint, the dining space is delineated by a large iron orb light fixture and features a substantial oak table with eight chairs.

A rendering of the room plan helped the clients visualize how the final design would look and function. Placed at right angles to the long fireplace/bookcase wall are two completely different sofas to anchor the ends of a very large neutral sisal rug. Two contemporary wing chairs were selected to flank the sleek, tile-fronted fireplace, while two smaller club chairs in the same grouping allow a survey of the room from any angle. James T. Farmer III Born and bred in the South, James is a professional garden, floral and interior designer; cook; author and lifestyle expert. In addition, James is a frequent guest in magazines as well as on television and radio. James’ natural Southern grace and warm personality light up any room. A skilled and entertaining speaker, he is truly a young and fresh voice for his generation. Whether he’s teaching how to plan the perfect summer picnic, using everyday items to create exquisite tabletops, creating drop-dead gorgeous flower arrangements and wreaths, or making his grandmother’s skillet peach pie, Farmer masterfully guides his audience through the art of elegant garden living. Q

It’s clear that you’re a very well-rounded lifestyle expert. Entertaining, cooking, writing, designing ... the list goes on and on! When did you realize that you wanted to pursue this profession?

A

As a child, I was inspired by Frank McCall and his architecture and design firm located in Moultrie, Georgia. I knew I wanted to follow their trajectory to encompass the many facets of design and Southern style. Of course, at Auburn, I majored in art history and horticulture to give me the credentials to become a professional designer.

Q

How did growing up in the South shape your design sensibility?

A

My design sensibility is what I call “unapologetically Southern.” I saw people in my community and ladies like my mother, aunt, and grandmother who did not hide the fact that items were family pieces! Instead of trying to hide a Southern home, they embraced and celebrated it with the style.

Q

What’s your favorite place to get away for the weekend?

A

Cashiers or 30A on the gulf! But, to be honest, parking my suburban in the driveway at Farmdale (James’ home in Perry, GA) on Friday evening and not leaving until Monday morning is quite luxurious too.

Q

With the holidays right around the corner, friends and family will be returning home to celebrate. What are your tips for making your home inviting for the holidays?

PA M M Y ’ S POUND CAKE 2 sticks butter, softened (aged if possible) 2 cups sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 5 eggs

A

Bring the outdoors in by using greenery and flowers! This is the quickest method to usher in a festive mood. Along with seasonal produce and baked goods! No matter how fine or exquisite your house is, it does not say home until something is baking in the oven and the table has fresh flowers.

Beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add the flour and 1 egg at a time alternately, beginning and ending with flour.

Q

What are your top three must-haves for throwing a successful dinner party?

A

Great Food! Great Flowers! And Great Folks! The food and the flowers can be simple and seasonal, but the true chemistry occurs with the right pairing and seating of the invite list. One of my favorite dinner parties was sitting on the floor in a friend’s home who did not yet have dining room furniture eating Domino’s pizza and drinking wine out of solo cups. It is the attendees who make any event celebratory!

Add the batter to a lightly greased and floured Bundt pan.

Q

It’s no secret that in the South, we love dessert! What is your favorite never-fail dessert recipe?

A

Easy! Pound cake with whipped creamed and seasonal fruit.

Q

Congratulations on the release of your new book, “A Place to Call Home.” How do you define home?

A

Home is where you long to be. It is the bed you cannot wait to crawl into. It is the table you cannot wait to set. It is the wet nose and wagging tail of your “furry” family members. I know it is cliché, but home is where the heart is.

Pammy’s grandmother’s note on the recipe says, ”Do not wash it,” for many of these old-fashioned, heavier pans would keep the “seasoning” from previous cakes. I always grease and flour the pan for security. Start in a cold oven and bake at 325º F for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean. I always start checking at 50 minutes. Just don’t stomp around the kitchen or slam the oven door! Excerpted from “A Time to Celebrate”

Designer John Ishmael helps a couple create a luxurious new home without sacrificing the need for a home that is full of “real life.” Design by John Ishmael // Photography by Shelly Marshall Schmidt // Story by Susan Victor

The main living area boasts beautiful transitional architectural elements of opened beams combined with a deep coffered ceiling. Ishmael designed a custom fireplace surround and mantel that feels a little more modern and sophisticated by using Carrara marble for the mantel and hearth and simple rectangular and diamond molding reliefs on the face of the mantel.

When a newly married couple found themselves blending families and building a new home in an upscale gated community, they struggled with how to balance all of their wants, needs and design desires under one roof.

36

That is when they turned to Nandina Designer and local artist John Ishmael to help them wade through the overwhelming task of taking their dreams and turning them into reality.

“Before this house, I could fit most of what I owned into my car,” joked the husband. “Going all new seemed totally overwhelming, and we felt we needed a professional to collaborate with and to guide us.“

Choosing the location and plan for the home proved fairly straightforward. She loved the Milton/Alpharetta area, close to her family, and he wanted a gated golf course community with spacious lots that would allow enough space to have a large outdoor entertaining area and swimming pool. The actual construction of the home was near the end of the project when the couple was referred to Ishmael from previous clients. The three-story spacious open floor plan had proved to be a real design challenge, and they wanted a professional to guide them through pulling all of the spaces together in a cohesive design.

The couple wanted a home to reflect their personal style and not fall into the typical look of an oversized house in a luxury community. The husband also co-parents children from a previous marriage and has a large extended family in the area, so along with her extended family they needed a home that could handle “real life:” dogs, children, family friends and extended family gatherings.

During the first interview Ishmael and the clients realized that there was a good fit. As John described it, “We all knew that the interiors of this home needed to be luxurious and modern, yet remain easy and gracious to accommodate a large, yet close-knit circle of family and friends.”

Large oversize metal pendants add a dramatic flair to a traditional style white and marble kitchen. Lee counter height dining benches provide ample seating without overcrowding the island with counter stools. FA L L + W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

The end result remains true to the initial vision. The main floor features a wide-open floor plan with several entertaining spaces that all open to each other. The foyer opens to a modern, inviting dining room, the entrance to a seductive masculine home office for the husband; and a grand spiral staircase that leads to the other two floors. A unique custom bar and glass enclosed wine cellar separate the foyer from the great room, kitchen, eating area, and keeping room. All of this space opens to a fabulous outdoor entertaining area and pool with a custom waterfall. “The design challenge,” stated Ishmael, “was creating cohesive rooms for such a large open floor plan that fit the client’s desire for luxury and even a bit of glamour, yet still remain inviting and family/dog friendly.” The couple leaned toward silver and all shades of blues and muted greys. John added creams, taupes, and mixed metals to the design plan to warm up the overall feel of the design and to give it some staying power. A mix of blues along with taupe, cream and grey provide a warm and inviting dining room.

The husband runs his own consulting business out of his home and needed an office where he was comfortable bringing clients and where he could work long hours. The room is masculine with leather, wood and metal. The Brownstone desk is open and architecturally simple; it functions as a feature element of the awkwardly shaped six-sided room.

The second floor vaulted entertaining space probably was intended to be a playroom for children but had such a unique architectural element with the beams and the best view of the golf course from the house that the homeowners decided to dedicate it as an adult entertaining space with a table for cards and a built in bar. The unusual combination of purple and teal feels both masculine and feminine at the same time. (Shown on Page 41.) The clients wanted a soft, serene space for the master bedroom suite. The tone-on-tone design of the room is muted but there is plenty of pattern and texture within the fabrics that add depth to the monochromatic palette. Pillows on the bed and artwork highlight a pop of teal and give life to the room. The end result of the design project was a resounding success, combining luxury style with real life. Their first holiday fell only weeks after they had moved in, and as the wife described it, “We had every bed full and blow-up mattresses in every common area – it was a cacophony of family, friends, and pets … we loved every minute of the madness.”

The Willcox

A JEWEL IN THE CITY OF AIKEN, THE WILLCOX I S T R U LY A U N I Q U E S O U T H E R N E X P E R I E N C E . If you find yourself searching for an unforgettable Southern experience, the Willcox in Aiken, South Carolina, oozes enough Southern charm, sophisticated glamour and individualized indulgence to satisfy the most discriminating traveler. The remarkable turnaround of this 1898 Southern gem from dilapidation to destination was orchestrated by a husband and wife team, Geoff and Shannon Ellis, winning the attention and the awards of major travel magazines the world over. It currently enjoys rankings as one of the best hotels in the South and in the world.

Lady Luck played a role in securing the Willcox for the Ellises, who through “a comedic coordination of creative financing by a very generous supporter, and two lawyers attending two different events at the hotel on New Year’s Eve 2009, allowed us to purchase the hotel with only 10 minutes to spare before The Willcox would be forced to close its doors forever on January 1, 2010.” Shannon attributes the ambiance and mystique enjoyed by many as the result of their “focus on community, clients, and a clear vision for the future.”

Community The Willcox has always held a special place in Aiken’s heart. “We heard story after story from everyone we talked to – whether they were married in the lobby, threw stones in the windows when it was condemned, had Sunday brunch with their grandparents, bought a bed at one of the many liquidation sales, stole a fork, or borrowed a Willcox hanger for thirty years and then returned it!” joked Geoff. “Early on we realized that The Willcox was more than a destination property – it was central to the fabric of Aiken.” The importance of maintaining the community connection is part of every decision the Ellises make – from charitable giving to attaching the tag line “The living room of the community” to every advertisement that features The Willcox.

Clear Vision From the minute that the Ellises took ownership of The Willcox, they have envisioned returning The Willcox to its heyday, a thriving glamorous retreat that exudes a relaxed lifestyle in the heart of a historic community. To achieve this goal, they developed a first-class restaurant, brought in an antique 1898 bar for the central lobby, then added a spa. “We hope to continue to improve every aspect of the business, and we are grateful that people respond so positively,” explained Shannon. The latest improvement is the construction of The Chef’s Cottage, built on the footprint of the original Willcox chef’s 1898 residence. Projected to be completed in December 2017 – and with reservations booked for January 2018 – the project will meet the demand for long-term rentals and family style accommodations.

Having traveled around the world, Jessie loves researching societal trends and the evolution of design

My personal design style would fill all the pages of this magazine. I love many styles and I end up combining them in sometimes startling ways. For example, I recently purchased a pale blue, chalk painted vintage cabinet as a TV stand. It didn’t feel quite “me” enough, so I layered a sleek, simple Lucite Parsons console over the top of it. This was the perfect modern foil to the vintage, more ornate cabinet.

N E V E R - FA I L D E S I G N T I P ? Invest in great light fixtures for every room. They add a sculptural quality and can add a unique, personal touch without having to invest in much more. A cool light fixture can completely make a room! Also, most people forget about lighting, so your space will automatically be head and shoulders above everyone else’s. Speaking of lighting … candlelight hides a multitude of flaws!

Becoming an eligible bachelor for a second time in your life can be unsettling, especially when your home still has all of the feminine touches that your ex-wife preferred, like dainty chandeliers, floral fabrics, and fussy furniture. That is when this Inman Park bachelor turned to Nandina designer Jessie LaFalce to help him re-create a dining room that would reflect a more masculine style without being “Craftsman Cliché” or Midcentury Modern, as many single men are currently gravitating to. Entertaining business associates and friends for more casual style dinners was a priority for this homeowner. The central placement of a large dining room between the kitchen and the living area made it a prime gathering space and a perfect fit for the style of entertaining this bachelor prefers. “Because this room was naturally dark due to poor sunlight, we wanted to go with a moody, lounge vibe…and selected a deep blue (Naval by Sherwin Williams) for the walls,” explained LaFalce. The focal point of the room is a commissioned painting by the owner’s personal friend and local Atlanta artist Meredith Gillespie, which works beautifully with the navy blue walls of the room. An antique table is instantly more masculine and updated when surrounded with leather and burlap chairs, and the combination of leather, wood, and metal nailhead create impact when placed upon a cream and black graphic area rug. “We purchased deep green leather hides from Lee Industries and custom-made long bench cushions for the existing built-in window seat. We then added extra throw pillows to create a comfy cocktail lounge feel,” said LaFalce. The new gold bar cart in antique brass and white marble is a favored design feature and is filled with the owner’s craft cocktail ingredients and recipes. 48

Returning Table TO THE

Making the case for dinner party entertaining during the holidays Story and Styling by Karin Jeffcoat // Photography by Lauren Carnes

As the holidays approach, my days and weekends become packed with styling and orchestrating one major holiday event after another. When it comes to my own life and family, I feel overwhelmed with the idea of formal entertaining. The easy way out is to throw together a casual cocktail party and call it a day. However, if you really want to make some lasting holiday memories, invite people to sit at your table! Dining is intimate – it invites your guests to linger, to talk, to laugh, to love. Simple. Intimate. Unexpected. These three words describe my insider secrets for pulling off a truly memorable dining experience that doesn’t break the bank or your holiday spirit!

Simple Design a menu that is simple, delicious, and easy to prepare. Dining at table does not require formal service or hired help; you can incorporate the food onto the table as part of your tablescape, or set up a simple buffet on a sideboard in your main dining area. Instead of elaborate centerpieces, get creative with fresh cut greenery and colorful fruits and vegetables. Don’t worry about breaking the food or decorating rules – there aren’t any! 52

|

N HOME

|

FA L L + W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

Intimate Make these little soirées all about close friends and family. Pull out all the stops … set out your grandmother’s china and those adorable holiday plates that you never use, maybe even the silver you hate to polish. Create warmth with candles, little surprises at each plate, great background tunes, good alcohol, and most of all, your undivided attention!

Unexpected This is a tricky element, but outside the box is what you’re looking for. You could serve your guests in an unusual place in your home, like the enclosed sun porch. Or perhaps an incredible Thanksgiving tablescape that suits your room’s color scheme – grey, aubergine, plum, and red – will incorporate eggplants, grapes, and pomegranates into your palette instead of pumpkins and mums. Add an unconstructed piece of velvet with a mix of iron and pewter candlesticks to bring warmth to the occasion. Surprise your guests at the end of dinner with dessert and a beautiful cordials bar filled with antique glasses.

When a newly retired couple relocated to Aiken from New Jersey after living in the same house – with mostly the same furniture – for 30 years, we were faced with a design challenge.
