It’s just another day in Lego Land. Officer O’Connor is patrolling the streets on his motorbike. A shopkeeper pushes a broom along the sidewalk in front of his corner store. Mrs. Pitts is out on her rooftop veranda while the town’s crossing guard keeps an eye on the pedestrians. As far as he can tell, it’s shaping up to be a pretty normal day on the blocks.

For millions of kids young and old, LEGO seems as American as apple pie. Yet in reality, the toys are as American as Danish pastry. LEGO was invented in Denmark at the dawn of World War II by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, a carpenter who built the non-violent toys in response to rising hostilities in Europe. Over the last eighty years, LEGO has grown to be one of the top toy companies in the world, and was named “Toy of the Century” in 2000. Kids just can’t seem to get enough of the colorful plastic blocks that inspire their imagination. While most kids are forced to let go of their LEGO dreams when they become adults, Denmark native and Nantucket summer resident, Erik Christensen (no relation to LEGO founder), never let the suggested age on the LEGO boxes get in the way of building his little block kingdom. “I was born in Copenhagen in 1937,” Erik says in a Danish accent. “In my childhood years, when I was 12 years or so, I played with LEGO, which had just been introduced to Denmark at that time.” LEGO has been in the Christensen family ever since, passed down to his daughters and now to his nine grandchildren. On rainy summer afternoons or at dusk before dinner, the next generation of Christensens can be found huddled over projects in the garage, connecting some of the same plastic blocks their grandfather used nearly half a century ago. Rather than surfing the web or playing violent video games, the Christensen clan spends its time building what would be the envy of any LEGO lover. Sprawled in Erik’s Nantucket garage is a miniature metropolis, complete with buildings, vehicles, ships and hundreds of small figures, each sporting the same even smiles. The elaborate LEGO display has taken over the garage, and now threatens to force out the family car. With the summer underway, the Christensen grandchildren are raring for a prolific building season. Equipped with freshly drafted blueprints and some of LEGO’s newest designs, the Christensen Company plans to expand their LEGO real estate deeper into the garage. Hopefully, they won’t need HDC approval if the town continues to grow.

GONE A-WHALIN’ with Mom & Dad

“Are we there yet?” is not a question you ask on a whaleship.
Imagine a road trip with your family: halfway in, your brother starts pulling your sister’s hair; your mom struggles to break up the fight; and all the while, your dad is threatening to “pull this car right around!” Now imagine that trip is not two hours long, but two years long! Back in the nineteenth century, young Nantucketers like Richard Gibbs Jr. were often stuck on a whaleship with their parents for years on end. It’s been rumored that if you didn’t finish your vegetables, you had to swab the deck or even walk the plank!

hirteen-year-old Nantucketer Richard Gibbs Jr. went to sea with his father, Captain Richard Gibbs, and his mother, Almira, on a voyage aboard the whaleship Nantucket from 1857 to 1859. The trip took the Gibbs family around Cape Horn, up the west coast of South America, and into the vast Pacific Ocean. Young Richard Jr. kept a remarkable journal of the cruise that offers a fascinating glimpse into the Gibbs family dynamics.

The moral environment of a whaleship was a challenging place for parents to raise an obedient, well-mannered son. The crewmen were mostly illiterate ruffians with a taste for rum and other rough-andtumble pastimes; the business of whaling was bloody and dangerous; life at sea on a whaleship offered poor rations, cramped quarters, and plenty of rats, roaches, and other vermin—but no shortage of adventure.

Throughout Richard’s journal, there are heartwarming exchanges between him and his mother, Almira. It appears that she regularly reviewed her son’s journal entries, and often left him commentary and advice. The nineteenth-century exchanges almost read like an e-mail
chain between a college student and his mom. On June 9, 1857, Richard Jr. writes, “I shall try to improve every day dear mother for I feel that I ought to.” Almira comments, “I am very glad to know my dear boy that you have formed so good a resolution. . . . It is for your own advantage and will confer a great favour upon your mother that is anxious to see you get along and take your stand amongst men of respectability. A.G.”
The journal also reveals the unique relationship Richard Jr. had with his father, captain of the Nantucket. “The old man is not for gamming if he can avoid it,” the boy writes on May 6, 1859. Being on a whaleship with your father as captain was not unlike being on a baseball team with your dad as coach— Richard Sr. could not show the boy any favoritism. He needed to maintain his stoic nature as captain, or else his command might be undermined.
While his father raised him to be a man, Richard Jr.’s mother tried to raise him to be a gentleman. This, too, was exhibited in the boy’s journal in a message she writes to him, in this verbatim transcription: My dear if you would be happy try to cultivate a good heart . . . I would caution you against the useing of profane language profane language shows a depraved heart. shun the company of the low and vicious never enter the haunts of vice and wickedness. many a good name and promising youth have been ruined by frequenting the glittering places that are held out to tempt the youth many parents have gone down to the grave broken hearted . . . try to do as near right as you possibly can your mother. You can picture Richard’s mother doling out this advice, and like any thirteen-yearold boy, he may have responded, “Yea, yea mom. Whatever you say.” To which she would have exclaimed, “Don’t you ‘yea, yea’ me Richard Gibbs Junior!” Richard Gibbs Jr.’s journal aboard the whaleship Nantucket was donated to the NHA collections by the Friends of the Nantucket Historical Association, who are celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary this year (1986–2011). The Friends are the NHA’s leading collectors group, and have donated many of the most important art and artifacts in the NHA collection. Richard Gibbs Jr.’s journal is one of many items that will be featured in a special anniversary catalog by the author that will appear this summer titled Island Treasures: Gifts of the Friends of the Nantucket Historical Association, 1986–2011.

Indeed, it took a crew to raise a child on a whaleship. A boy like Richard Gibbs worked under the command of his cousins, siblings, and ultimately the “old man.” Sure, he had the chance to make a pretty penny, but at the cost of minimal privacy, bouts of seasickness, and sacrificing the normal fun and games of a landlubber. So the next time you’re complaining about taking out the trash or cleaning your room, be happy you’re not scrubbing whale blubber off a deck or trimming sails in a hurricane!
