Harbin Theater Different from other Theater buildings that are normally located in the urban centre, Harbin Theater will not act as an isolated landmark for the city, but the natural continuation of the human spirit. Harbin Cultural Island is located in the natural landscape of the riverside wetland north of Songhua River. It is part of the development north of Sun Island, which is an important natural habitat in the north. The entire building is expected to be completed in 2016. Harbin, China

WINTER SNOW VIEWS The theatre includes a large theatre and a small theatre. The theatre takes the natural beauty of the north as its premise. In an attempt to reduce such a large volume, the architectural form is a continuation of the natural environment as it becomes part of the landscape. The entire building acts as an undulating snow covered mountain, following a natural rhythm.

Curtain wall panel system Curtain Wall The cladding panelization option was finalized by myself in Grasshopper. In the later stage of design development phase, I was in charge of communication with Gehry Technology, who was managing the curtain wall optimization in BIM. In addition, I was also involved with daily communication with curtain wall design consultant Inhabit Group and Yuanda cladding Engineering.

Cladding_Bump The cladding of the building is custom-made pure white aluminium. White stone and concrete are also used as part of the wall, introducing a pure feeling of North. The bumps on the skin reflect the features of Harbin—ice and snow, and become the important design element on the elevation. Bump Shape

Working flow between 2D and 3D Although we kept ten people around in the team in the design stage, I had to be responsible for 3D model and 2D drawings for my design part simultaneously. The design transformation between 2D and 3D work through a smooth working flow between CAD and Rhino or Grasshopper. I helped to build the drawing setup at DD stage. My drawing skills are excellent and precise. Such as a series of section drawings above in DD stage.

Large Auditorium The stage design for the theatre is not only suitable for western opera and modern drama performances, but also meets the requirement of traditional Chinese theatre plays. The acoustics and lighting design provide a high level of performance for the various venues in the theatre.

Design Optimization One of the challenges of large auditorium is to meet all the requirements from different consultants such as Lighting, Acoustics, Stage, Cost and Seating meanwhile to keep the original concept and form. I participated in numerous of communication meetings for design development in the design stage of the optimization.

Small Auditorium The natural forms inspired by rippling water create a visual connection between interior and exterior. The rippling form will improve acoustical performance and also make the space more visually dynamic. I participated in the small auditorium from concept design to the design development includes the grasshopper final definition of wave design which is based on the mathematical equation. I was also involved with communication with materials fabricator, Acoustics consultant and cooperating with interior design company to develop the construction documents.

Under Construction 2011 - 2013 Site wetlands, Site break ground, Concrete Structure, Steel Structure From 2013-2014, I went to the construction site monthly to take part in construction big meeting with all the consultants. During my site visit, I administered the construction process to assure conformance with design intent and addressed any field conditions as they arise.

Construction 2015 - 2016 To Be Finished
From the design’s initial startup in 2011 to March 2013, the overall structure of the Cultural Centre was complete and the entire project began to take shape. The building façade and landscape has been finished by February of 2015, and the rest of the interior parts are still on-going. The overall opera house will be complete by November of 2015 after four years of construction. Meanwhile, another project of the Harbin Culture Island, Labor Recreation Center will continue with the exterior curtain wall working till the April of the 2016. Office Renovation The building is designed to embrace and enhance the architecture of the existing factory. The facade of five-stories old office building will be replaced by clear glass curtain wall. The top floor and the fourth floor will be renovated to canteen for employees.
Factory Extension The main factory has to be kept for daily production with no interruption. A tour bridge is inserted for vistors to visit the factory and learn about the company’s history.

Experience Lab The Experience Lab seeks to tell the story behind the production of the water. the design evolves from a simple archway, forming expanding and contracting tunnels.
Plaza With the mountains as backdrop we create a new plaza facing the roundabout and entry to the village. It is welcoming guests and employees with a generous public space elevated from the traffic by a grand stair, and is framed by the new structures

Garage Located at the main access point to the factory at the southernmost tip of our site, the multi-level truck parking structure functions not only as a logistical circulation hub, but is also the first building of the S.Pellegrino Flagship Factory that visitors and commuters will see coming from the South.
Bridge The S.Pellegrino bridge connects the new access road to the Aldero’ site and provides direct truck access to the Factory. As the southernmost tip of the Flagship Factory, it acts as a gate to the village of San Pellegrino Terme.

The Infinite Corridor Underlying the lore of MIT and the city of Cambridge’s academic/professional think-tank profile is the Infinite Corridor, a subsurface umbilical cord connecting many of MIT’s core buildings, as well as the legacy of the now demolished Building 20, the “temporary” structure erected in 1943 and demolished in 1998, that was home to numerous Nobel Prize winners’ discoveries during its half century existence.
Kendall Square Located adjacent to the MIT Media Lab, the Kendall square of Cambridge covers a huge triangle zone of three blocks. The current master plan of this district divides buildings by use and lot. This MIT special district occupies a finite footprint but has unparalleled views of the city and river, . Currently a collection of surface parking lots, this recently rezoned area has the potential to become a city within the city, a campus within the campus, and an extension of the university itself.
Floating City Our proposal is based on the relationships between the surrounding buildings and the adjacent public square and green spaces. Consequently, instead of segmenting the urban-scale site into fragmental pieces, a mega-structure floating building has been proposed to keep the urban context, meanwhile it operates as a networked linking connection. The project rebuilds the architectural typologies and ideological sense of campus by recasting the connections between the Micro-Urban and Cityscape.

Site Strategy( Landscape & Circulation) The design started from a careful investigation of the public realm and green space of the surrounding. The inner new landscape was created in response to outer existing landscape. The three main axes, as pedestrian-oriented connections proposed on the ground, will decide the orientation and organisation of the campus. The most important one, the Exterior Infinite corridor, works as the extension of the Infinite Corridor, binding the campus and the eastern downtown together.

Bridging Into City / Campus
Growth and Expansion To maximize its transparency and porosity of the urban-scale site, the plinth – main volume of the bottom – raised and covering an outdoor plaza to create urban nucleus. Five towers oriented facing different views were elevated again above the floating platform. The roof works as the transitional spaces between the towers and plinth, becoming an artificial landscape for campus activities.

Multiple Facades The diverse orientations of the towers and plinths cooperates with the linked new and old landscapes become the main strategy in relationship with the surroundings. Variable heights of towers, variable levels of the platform, provide multiple views towards different directions of the city.

1:300 Sectional Model The sectional physical model cut through the building from sunken plaza of the subway station in the west, pass through the central public atrium, continue to the south academic tower.
Sectional Model Close-up The sectional physical model shows that the plinth operates like a linked bridge connecting streets along the site. Distinguished from the closed staircase, the slow ramps connects different levels in a open and public way to stimulate the commutations in the buildings

Platform View From East Extended Public Plane & Continuous Movement The towers raised again upon the roof of the platform creates a continuous outdoor community. Views will not be blocked by towers from both sides. The terrace is the connection for level difference for resting and activities.
View From Marriott Hotel Transportation Connection & Horizontal Urbanscape The transportation system is part of the micro-city connected by the sunken plaza located adjacent to the Marriott Hotel. The roof of the platform is a reflection of the horizontal Urbanscape. Diverse design elements like lawn and roof gardens were infused in the roof artificial landscape. The plinth’s stainless-steel facade softly reflects natural light to echo the building’s context.

It is sunken into basement floor from the roof of the platform and surrounded by several gentle sloped staircases and glazed walls.

Central Atrium Vertical Connection & Natural Light Infusion Functionally, the atrium is a vertical circulation interconnecting the basement, ground, and plinth. The big opening also brings the natural lights into floors and the ground. The amphitheatre, grand stairs and sunken garden offer the opportunities for students to open-air performance, sharing, and communicating.

Working Stage: Concept Design - Detail Design Status: Under Construction Area: 61,296 sqm Company: MAD architects
Design Description The building is conceived as a series of vertically stacked gardens wrapped with an airy screening element, or exterior skin, to protect the inner climatic comfort for the occupants and superimpose a cohesive aesthetic to the exterior massing. The vertically integrated gardens are surrounded by office programmes, each replete with a unique view of at least one of these many themed public zones. The building massing structure is designed to minimize the visual impact within the gardens and offices, helping to instil a perception of a building floating in mist. Every floor is presented as different neighbourhoods with a variety of social zones to encourage community and pride in the workplace. The overall openness of the massing is designed to take full advantage of the comforts of the Xiamen climate and to maximize day light penetration into the depths of the building.
N SITE PLAN
The transition from the city to the building begins with the landscape of the site. Gently sloping hills hint to the lifting of the typical ground condition into the upper levels. These hills also form privacy and sound barriers to the inner portions of the site. A large open public courtyard with a pond is positioned best in the south half of the site. This allows the buildings in the western sites to have a view to the park in the centre of the master plan and creates a small node for the urban pedestrians passing along the site. The building massing defers to the central park with a larger percentage of terraces and open zones along the east side. The northern and western portions of the massing are decidedly more dense, complimenting the urban intention of these areas in the master plan.

Landscape
Hanging Garden
Different forms of vegetation, such as bamboo, pine tree, orchid and unique landscape themes such as mountain and water fall will give each garden a unique expression and atmosphere. Walkways and stairs connecting the different gardens allow for circulation around and through the massing.
Central Area Design The vertical space with or metal material accentuating the verticality Bridges linking floors and acting as cat walks random holes puncture the wall to allow occupants different views. The openness of the massing and central is designed to take full advantage of the comforts of the Xiamen climate and to maximize day light penetration into the depths of the building.

Design Intention ‘A house is a machine for living in.’ Quote from Le Corbusier. What about today? We are already been away from machine age, what message should an architecture convey ? What is the house today? Given the simple, functional plans, the project located in Taiwan is an opportunity to respond to the needs of an expanding city, to create a residential landmark that strives for more than simple efficiency and that provides residents an emotional connection to their hometown.

Vertical Gardens Situated between a residential community and an elevated highway and defined by L shape boundary, the site area is divided into four zones for four towers as the developers originally proposed. How to address an existing rational plan without breaking the program distribution for the residential buildings is our first challenge we met. In such a circumstance, I conceived our residences as a collection of angular blocks, faceted surfaces and vertical lines.

Garden Balcony Our design features a continuous balcony that surrounds the whole building planes, eliminating the vertical barriers traditionally used in high rise architecture. The vertical pipes break the simple and repetition of the traditional residential buildings. The balconies are clad with finely textured grey aluminium. The voids, plants and balcony, are integrated together to create a green garden.

View from Renmin Park The pavalion was a transformable and temporary structure for the JNBY and COTTON USA fashion show held in Shanghai, with an ability to take on numerous different forms. The structure hosted a list of events including live music and corporate entertainment.
Pavilion Night View The tent itself is created from a steel structure with a taut elastic waterproof material with translucent properties. The material, provided by COTTON USA was made from low-carbon footprint products, creating a biologically friendly installation with a major advantage of being able to be easily re-installed and re-used in the future, with a new form.

Centre control point of original triangle is raised, above the newly formed triangle.
Original triangle divided by 4 triangles into 12 sections, indentifying 7 control points.
Mid-length control points of original triangle are raised, forming a new isosceles triangle at the top.
Mid-length control points of the top triangle are created and pulled out wards.
In line with the original mid-length control points, a new control point is created, rasied and pulled outwards.

Park View for Pavilion Based on the formation of origami triangles, the unique structural design was formed. The structure can be assembled into one of many possible combinations with an ability to be easily transformed from one form to the next. As well as being easily deconstructed for transportation or storage.
River View for Pavilion The whole structure consists of 6 inter-locking components, sharing 3 varied designs. Each design was achieved from a process of continuous deformation and manipulation of one triangular surface, resulting in a shape which corresponds to the overall layout.

Mid-Section Wind Break Sky Lobby West to East View The skylobby located on the 40th floor functions as a wind break to reduce the tower movements caused by the wind loads.
Bring the Exterior to Interior Looking up from skylobby The interior design is organized as a series of columns surrounds the buildings that are separate volumes at the lower levels, but interweave and link together as they rise upwards, connecting the outer wall of the core and generates seats for resting.

The project is situated between the urban center and la carolina park in the city of quito of Ecuador. The concrete structure will climb to a total of 33-stories, offering sweeping views that take in the nearby volcanoes.
The tower will become the city’s tallest building, comprises stacked concrete boxes. each of these modules has been rotated to provide views and space for outdoor terraces. Each floor features apartments that have terraces on both the north and south façades, a gesture which not only allows for generous views, but also ensures cross ventilation and a general sense of openness.

MAXIMUM VOLUME The resulting volume after applying setbacks.
VIEW OF OPTIMIZATION The optimal massing allows for the most desirable views towards the park and landscape nearby.
THROUGH UNITS Two cores on each side of the building allow for premuim with access to day light, views and cross ventilation.
GROUND FLOOR PLAZA A green plaza surrounded by retail become an extension of park and provides a new East-To-West connection through the site.
PRIVATE TERRACES The volume is subdivided into smaller room sizes and slightly rotated to create private terraces for each units.
IQON TOWER The park starts to climib up the rotating boxes that make up the facade of the building, creating a vertical display of Quito’s bio diversity.
Once the trees outgrow their planters (after about five years), they can be replanted in the city’s parks. In this way the building becomes part of a green cycle — from park to building back to park. The building aims compress the unique experience of quito into a single building to create a vertical community: la carolina park climbing all the way up to the penthouse.
