“Really anything we put into the air, water and earth ended up in us, and vice versa. It was also clear that, while cleaning house might reduce the amount of toxins my family was exposed to, it was only a stopgap solution. The items I threw out would end up somewhere else, and in someone else. As it was with health and illness, there was no here/there line between humans and the environment.

Healthy planet, healthy people.

Sick planet, sick people.”

Cynthia Li, M.D., published the book Brave New Medicine in 2019 and wrote the above text. Trained as a medical doctor, Li had a long and awakening journey about integrative, natural and functional health measures to address the root causes of her own health issues when Western medicine alone wasn’t doing the trick.

She continued on to say, “The information on harmful chemicals was new to me, but it wasn’t new.”

In fact, Natural Awakenings has been educating, empowering and connecting our communities for 29 years regarding the importance of our health and environmental health, and the synergy between the two. Even before that, there was a vast body of growing research, public health professionals, and health and environmental organizations taking action.

What does this tell us?

Start NOW. Start yesterday if we could. Cleanse our body, clean out our home and get involved in our local and global community as much as possible. Here are some ways to get started:

1. Use less plastic, for both our health and the planet’s health.

2. Learn. Read reminders about how to detoxify our homes, food, drinking water and air in our Healing Ways article (page 32). Read about the human and planetary health link in our feature story (page 26) and reducing our FOODprint (page 30).

3: Volunteer at the 28th annual Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup (page 19). Attend other Earth Day events in Milwaukee (page 18) and support the many green-focused organizations you’ll read about in Natural Awakenings

4. Make Greener Choices. Get into the habit of buying more sustainable and natural products as your default. Support businesses that offer greener options. Check out our 2023 Green Profiles section to get inspired! (page 20)

Less waste, less toxins, less disease, less pollution. More natural ingredients, more natural products, more clean communities, more healthy families.

Healthy People, Healthy Planet. We’re all in this together,
