Katrina T. McCombs
State District Superintendent
Superintendent McCombs is a 30-year educator. She has seen the Camden City School District from multiple angles over these three decades. Born into a family of Camden educators, as the daughter of Ms. Eunice Green Young and Mr. Gary Shaw, State District Superintendent Katrina T. McCombs grew up knowing the power of a quality education in transforming one’s life and improving one’s circumstances. After attending Mickle School, Bonsall Elementary School, Cooper’s Poynt Family School, and Hatch Middle School, Mrs. McCombs graduated from Camden High School in 1987. Upon high school graduation, Mrs. McCombs attended Lehigh University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral and Neurosciences, before returning to Camden to work as an early childhood educator.
After teaching kindergarten for two years, Mrs. McCombs returned to higher education to better equip herself with the psychological and mental health skills she felt were necessary to support students who came to school having experienced trauma. She received both her Master of Arts and Master of Education degrees in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University, and became a child therapist. She used her counseling skills to support students as a group therapist and middle school English teacher. She quickly moved up the ranks at Lanning Square Elementary School from grade level chair to literacy coach, Whole School Reform facilitator, Vice-Principal, and Principal.
After earning her Master of Public Administration degree from Rutgers University–Camden, Mrs. McCombs transitioned from Lanning Square to serve as Director of the district’s Early Childhood Education department. In this role, she led Camden’s record levels of pre-k enrollment and supported the quality of early childhood education by investing in critical training for pre-k providers and early childhood educators. Armed with the unwavering belief that Camden students are more than capable of exceeding the state averages in reading and math, Mrs. McCombs supports the growth of high-quality neighborhood schools and provides teachers the support and resources they need to bring excellent instruction to the classroom every day. In her role as Deputy Superintendent, Mrs. McCombs oversaw the successful implementation of a revamped college and career readiness program, an annual leadership development program for principals, and a transformation in how district educators are coached and evaluated to ensure excellent instruction in every classroom. In her current role as State District Superintendent, the district’s dropout rate has fallen, and more students make it to graduation each year. Working in partnership with the Rutgers–Camden community, Mrs. McCombs has introduced afterschool learning enrichment programs led by Rutgers–Camden students and staff.
She and Chancellor Antonio D. Tillis also signed an MOU articulating such opportunities as developing collaborative initiatives that help to achieve better outcomes for youth and families in the city of Camden; engaging the critical resources of the university to create academically enriching and rigorous programming for students in grades K–12; creating educational pathways to increase the number of underrepresented students in the city of Camden who apply, enroll, and successfully complete post-secondary education; and expanding opportunities for professional development and leadership development for school teachers, support staff, and administrators.
Under her leadership, Camden City School District has received nearly $500 million dollars toward school facility projects and celebrated the opening of the new Camden High School while keeping the $133 million construction of the new high school on track, despite the pandemic. Under Superintendent McCombs, the District also launched a gifted and talented program for students across the district, provided every K-12 student in Camden with a laptop to facilitate remote learning during the pandemic, provided hundreds of meals to families during the pandemic preparing 25,000 meals per week with 16 pick locations and a delivery op-
tion. As a result, Camden City School District earned the #1 spot in meals served out of the 240 districts in its region. Superintendent McCombs’s leadership also led to the facilitation of the renaming of Woodrow Wilson High School to Eastside High and the renaming of ECDC to the Martha F. Wilson Early Childhood Development Center. Superintendent McCombs executed the initial launch of the Welcome Center at the Veterans Memorial School, through the Labor Management Collaborative with the Department of Education and in partnership with the New Jersey Education Association and the Camden Education Association. Superintendent McCombs’ leadership continues to open doors for Camden City schools and its students and she continues to build relationships that foster positive results on behalf of Camden’s children. Mrs. McCombs serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for One Camden, a member of the New Jersey Alliance of Black Superintendents (NJABS), a member of the Camden County Association of School Administrators (CCASA) and a member of the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA).
Growing up in Camden, Mrs. McCombs was active in Antioch Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Junior Choir and the Junior Usher Board, as well as Sunday school secretary. Today, she remains active in the faith-based community and serves alongside her husband of 28 years, Dr. Tyrone W. McCombs who also serves as Bishop of the South Jersey Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Church Of God In Christ and Pastor of Tabernacle of Faith Church, COGIC in Camden, NJ. For more than 30 years, Lady Katrina has been a member of Tabernacle of Faith Church COGIC. In the local church, Lady McCombs has been involved in various ministries and auxiliaries. As a previous youth leader, Lady McCombs developed a program entitled "Vessels of Honor" a session for young women, between the ages of 11 and 18 to discuss spiritual, personal and social issues. As a result, of the program many young women from the local community became members of the church. Lady McCombs is very thankful for the gift that God has given her to minister in song and has enjoyed participating on the Praise and Worship team, choir and many other areas.
As the First Lady of the South Jersey Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, Lady Katrina has been involved in the Women’s Ministry and also coordinated the Women’s Leadership Conference for many years as well as being involved in other areas.
