1. Introduction NAAM has taken the initiative to organize an exhibition and side events to commemorate 100 years of the establishment of the oil refinery in Curaçao. Our aim is to inspire understanding and appreciation of the processes through which the refinery influenced our culture, communicate historical facts in an accurate way, foster a sense of involvement and ownership in our historical processes, provide an experiential understanding of the forces that shape our present and enter into dialogue with the past. In 1915, Royal Dutch Shell decided to establish an oil refinery on Curaçao which opened for production in 1918. The island, called ‘isla inútil’ by the Spanish colonizers, developed in a short period of time into what we now call dushi Kòrsou, a multi ethnic, relatively prosperous society. The oil refinery stimulated an economic growth and different ethnic groups came to the island to work and so became Yu’i Kòrsou. Different industries emerged; the educational possibilities grew drastically, educating the children of all who live here. It is important for Curaçao, and especially the youth to understand Curaçao the way it was. To be aware that the establishment of the oil refinery shaped the modern Curaçao we know today.

2. Project aims and results 2.1 PROJECT AIMS Curaçao has gone through many changes in the past 100 years. Many people take the resulting social and cultural reality as a given and do not see them in their historical context. Many people believe that our culture and society are the way they are because of uncontrolled fate. The refinery’s 100th anniversary is a good moment for us to reflect on how we became the Curaçao of 2015 and specifically how the refinery shaped our community. We want to target the general population of Curaçao, tourists and especially schools, from Primary Education to Universities and technical schools. We aim to: • Inspire understanding and appreciation of the processes through which the refinery influenced our culture • Communicate historical facts in an accurate way • Foster a sense of involvement and ownership in our historical processes • Provide an experiential understanding of the forces that shape our present • Enter into dialogue with the past Target audience The project 100 Aña Refineria na Korsou/ Isla den Nos Bida will be of course aimed at the whole Curaçaoan population, which we want to make aware of the importance of this history. We want to specify the following target groups: • The Curaçaoan population who is very aware of the role of the refinery in the past, with a direct connection. Workers and other affiliates and their nuclear family. • The Curaçaoan population who is to some degree aware of the role the refinery had in the past, without a direct connection. • The Curaçaoan population who is very aware of the role of the refinery in the present, with a direct connection. Workers and other affiliates and their nuclear family. • The Curaçaoan population who is too young to be aware of the role of the refinery: Youngsters and schoolchildren • Immigrants not connected to the refinery and other visitors

4. Project Activities 4.1 Topics in the Exhibition 100 aña refinería na Kòrsou - Isla den Nos Bida In a contemporary way, the curator Felix the Rooy will show the history and impact op 100 years oil refinery in Curaçao, using images, texts and objects obtained on the island. The exhibition will address the past, the present and the future. Starting with Curaçao before the establishment of the oil refinery we will travel to the present, creating space for audience input of ideas for the future. Themes that will be addressed: - migration and housing - culture, education, sports - economic developments - technology
4.1.1 Curaçao before the oil refinery Before the establishment of the oil refinery, Curaçao was called a ‘necessitous colony,’ with much poverty and bad economic conditions. The agricultural Curaçao from before the abolition of slavery in 1863 was beginning to experience small industrial developments.
4.1.2 Oil refinery on Curaçao: CPIM / Shell from 1915- 1969 Shell has been the largest employer in the island’s history since 1918. Of the 44,344 inhabitants in 1929, 10,924 worked directly for the oil industry. This number peaked in 1952, with 12,631 employees. The refinery was an important source of fuel for allied forces in the Second World War. Economically, the refinery has been the mainstay of Curaçao since 1915.
4.1.3 The island flourished economically Different cultures established themselves in Curaçao, and became ‘Yu’i Kòrsou’ thus contributing to the special culture of Curaçao in major ways. Many other industries developed, the educational system ex- panded, the natural resources changed drastically.
4.1.4 Oil refinery on Curaçao: Shell from 1969- 1985 Curaçao experienced an economic downturn in the early 1980s. Shell’s refinery on Curaçao operated with significant losses from 1975 to 1979, and again from 1982 to 1985. In 1985, after a presence of 70 years, Royal Dutch Shell decided to end its activities on Curaçao.

4. Project Activities
4.1.5 Oil refinery on Curaçao: PDVSA from 1985 The settlement with Shell for one guilder in 1985 and the lease of the refinery to PDVSA ended this period in the history of the island. PDVSA’s established itself on the island 30 years ago providing continuing to the refinery industry and being a vital part of the community.
4.1.6 The future The exhibition will focus on the history of the refinery and its impact on the whole society. Our aim is to provide information and inspiration to enrich the discussions about the future of the island.
4.1.7 Artistic impressions Throughout the exhibition artistic work inspired by the refinery’s presence will be shown. This will be quotes from literary works, segments of music and bi-dimensional en tri-dimensional art work.
4.1.8 Languages The project will be produced in four languages, with Papiamentu and English being the main languages of the on-site exhibit. In Dutch and Spanish a booklet will be available. The project website will have extra in depth information in all four languages to make it more readily available to the World.
4.1.9 Opening hours and period We want the exhibition to stay open for a period of 6 months. Starting august 2016. The opening hours must be as broad as possible, including the weekends.

The aim is to deepen their understanding of the project and secure school visits to the exhibition.
4.2.1 Primary School School Visit All primary schools will visit the exhibition. This will be organized and the transport costs will be paid for by our organization. Educational material The primary schools will get material to prepare the visit to the exhibition. This will be aimed at making the young children aware of the close relationship between the history of the refining industry and their own history.
4.2.2 Secondary school School Visit All secondary schools will visit the exhibition. This will be organized and the transport costs will be paid for by our organization. Educational Material For the secondary school materials will be developed for different courses like economics, history, geog- raphy and social science. 4. Project Activities 4.4. Tours alongside examples of urbanization and other infrastructures We will organize tours alongside examples of urbanization done directly by the refinery like Emmastad, Julianadorp and Suffisant and others done indirectly like the neighborhoods that grow because of the migrant workers needing living space like Kanga and Dein. And we will tour other infrastructural development implemented by the refinery. The tours will focus on urban planning, architecture and social and recreational aspects of these neighborhoods. 4.5 Art Exhibition The presence of the refinery has always inspired visual artists. Themes like labor, pollution, migration tangled to the refinery has been visualized. We aim to stimulate (young) visual artist on the island to create work focusing on the present and future of the refining industry and the island. We will select works to be displayed in a separate Art Exhibition Venue. 4.6. Ongoing exhibitions organized by National Archives Curaçao and Maritime Museum The National Archives has ongoing exhibitions presenting photographs and documents telling the history of the Refining industry on the island. The Maritime Museum has his permanent “Steam for Oil” interactive exhibit, explain the oil refining process. Both institutions can be visited permanently and during the course of our project will be part of our communication.
5. Communication plan The project ‘100 Aña Refineria na Korsou / Isla den Nos Bida’ will be of course aimed at the whole Curaçaoan population, which we want to make aware of the importance of this history. The aims of our communications will have two main aims: make people aware of the message we want to convey and at the other hand draw them to ours activities. The organization will use all resources and contacts to reach the target groups
