ETHICS Ethics precedes the judgement of beauty and the question of “how to do--only if because ethics is first necessary to define our position and approach to any design problem.
IDENTIFYING ISSUE
GONE SMOKING
DESIGN PROCESS
FIRST ITERATION FOR NON-SMOKERS
dust bin integrated into wall, easier to clean
only one wall, well ventilated
(too boxy) FOR SMOKERS
platform elevated to keep smoke away from pedestrians
solar panels and plants on wire mash make it more sustainable
SECOND ITERATION planter boxes to make it sustainable and cooling
porous wall for ventilation and cooling
panels to shelter from rain and sun, use smog absorbing technology so that the smoke condense on the panels, easy to clean
INTENDED OUTCOME
ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE If architectural elements should be arranged “under the varied influneces of climate, natural surroundings, and social relations,as Semper explained, therefore it is important to reconsider our own elements in our climatic and cultural conditions. In this project, we are supposed to design a hawker centre for using architectural elements.
CASE STUDY OLD AIRPORT ROAD HAWKER CENTRE
DINEvergence
DESIGN PROCESS
FIRST ITERATION
(not practical)
spiral stairs to imrpove walk ability, since outside diameter inceases.
wire mash representing slitted floor,it allows air circulation since cold air falls and hot air rises, passive cooling
large tensile overhangs shelter users from rain and sun
SECOND ITERATION only columns, no walls, allows cross ventilation
make use of “nine square grid concept, but did not follow exactly. use 3x5 grid to create depth on one side
use normal stairs on both sides of entrance instead of spiral stairs to increase accessibility
mix the color of the overhangs to spice up extorior look
12 senses
It is really important for architects to know about humans’ 12 senses, since they affect our health, especially for children. Afterall, research has proven that architechtural forms can have an ifluence on children’s health, and architecture is always related to experince. In this project , we are supposed to design a installation for children to enhance one of their 12 senses.
SQUEEEEZE IN
CONCEPTUALIZATION FOR FIRST ITERATION
Kids are attracted by moveable and slidable objects by nature.
FIRST ITERATION
(limited number of player)
The first iteration is designed so that the kid will try to slide the board with a hole which will show the time lapse sihlouette of a running man, and they will get to notice a single movement instead of the whole proceed of running.
CONCEPTUALIZATION FOR SECOND ITERATION
Kids love to go into small and narrow spcaes like gaps between the walls and boxes because small spaces make them feel safer and more comfortable.
SECOND ITERATION
Hence dancing and running human silhouette are cut from a wooden block with 50 cm of depth to attract kids to come and play with the installation.
Normally when people watch others running or dancing, we take it as a process, but when kids come to fit themselves into the sihlouette , they get to pay more attention to the seperate movement.
PARTICIPATORY DESIGN Architecture is more than a piece of art, the basic capability of an architect should be empathy. Users’ need maters the most and participatary design allows we as architects to hear from the users. In this project we are supposed to design a process which allows the stakeholders to design for themsleves
BUSINESS ORIGAMI
TOOL KIT
Use cubes of different dimensions to represent different kitchen facilities. The actual floor plan of St Luke’s Eldercare with fixed columns as base to place the cubes. Allow elderlies to visualise the design to better cater to their own needs.
SENSE OF SCALE The sense of scale is essential to architecture. For this project, we are supposed to sense and recognise the application of scale in architecture and deploy architectural drawing conventions by documenting buildings, streetcapes, and urban neighbourhoods in Kuala Terrengganu.
KUALA TERRENGGANU
Kuala Terengganu, often abbreviated as K.T., is the administrative capital, royal capital and the main economic centre of Terengganu,Mayalisa. The city is situated at the estuary of Terengganu River, facing the south China Sea.
Besides being a major political and economic centre to the state, the city is also the main gateway to many of the state’s tourist dentinations. Even though the city is not spared from modernity and development, K.T. still retains strong Malay influences that are intermixed with other cultures from its long history as a port.
INTANGIBLE CITY In this project we will expolre our capacities to be expressed via an artistic process called collage and collagraphy. The theme of the project will be “Marginality as site of resistance.
THE LIGHT BOX
prints on paper represent the slum, foam models in middle box represent the rich district. The shadow of the foam models are projected on the paper, representing influence of the rich on the poor
In nature, trees compete against each other to grow taller and get more sunlight.
The prints are looking fainter because of the strong light, representing the livelihood of the poor are becomng harder and harder.
Similarly, in human society, human beings compete for more power and money. Hence light represents power.
The light seem unreachable, representing it is very hard for the poor to climb up the hierachy, emphasizing marginality.
Even though the prints represent slum, but different types of paper are used. The prints on cartridge paper represent even the poorer. Since when the shadow is projected, the prints can merely be seen compared to that on the rice paper.
The shadows projected are distorted, representing the rich are becoming more and more distorted morally when they get nearer to the immense power.
Despite looking nice on the brigher side, the back of the foam models are even darker than the prints. Representing the closer it is to the power, the more darkness tehy have to bear with.
COLLAGE
MATERIAL In this project, we will explore possibilities of waste being made into construction material and the proporties of different materials produced.
THE NUTSHELL(ter)
Peanut, macadamian, pistachio and pecan shell as compressive components, since nut shells are hard and light, and there is a large amount of waste of net shell.
Tea bag and twigs as tensile components, since they contain fibre
PECTIN is the secret weapon
Made from banana and orange pith, pectin is the secret weapon that binds our ingredients together. It does not dissolve in water hence the material is water proof. Pectin is hard after it is completely dried, hence our material binds well together, enhancing the strength.
FINAL PRODUCT
Light + Shock absorbing + Water proof Suitable as roof tiles in earthquake-prone areas
BRIDGE AND DOME
FAILED ITERATIONS
Trapezium difficult to form a nice curvage
FIANL MODULE
FAILED WAY OF ASSEMBLING
live
Too much bracing, too heavy load : dead load ratio not efficient
No bracing,singlae layer very flimsy
FINAL BRIDGE AND DOME
Double arch for each arm, stronger and more efficient l live load : dead load = 32 : 1
Pre-tension to strengthen the bridge final module allows en elegant curvature. live load : dead load = 50 : 1
