letterfrompublisher My Bichon Frise is one of the great loves of my
life: I adopted her from a pet rescue in New Jersey 10 years ago when she was just over a year old. I’ll never forget the first time I held her, how skinny and timid she was, and how quickly we bonded with each other. The old adage about man and dog (and woman and dog, as it is) isn’t just lore; research shows the two species have been “besties” for over 34,000 years from the time when dogs and humans began to cohabitate. Recent research also reveals that humans experience feelings of love for their pets in ways that rival what they feel for their children and mates; what’s even more interesting is it appears the feelings are mutual. Brain scans from a study in Japan show that oxytocin, the chemical released in the brain that creates the experience of love, is stimulated in both humans and their animal companions while they gaze into each other’s eyes. It’s logical that the popularization of science affirming the strong bond between us and our pet friends has recently contributed to a more enlightened era of pet care. Our vocabulary is a tip-off that things are changing: “homeless pets” has replaced “strays”, and the expression “pet guardian” is being used instead of “pet owner”, reflecting an important shift in consciousness. We’ve also seen a shift away from pet stores and “kill shelters” as a result of the incredible efforts of the pet rescue and rehabilitation movement. There are over 100 animal welfare and advocacy organizations in the U.S. and the number of rescues and shelters is reported to be close to 14,000. Their work has been critical to help limit overbreeding, which we know contributes to pet homelessness, and facilitates new homes for millions of animals that otherwise would have been put down. How we approach pet health is changing, too. There are over 5,000 vets that are members of the American Holistic Veterinary Association. These forward-thinking veterinarians, much like functional and integrative physicians, are incorporating alternative, homeopathic, natural and complementary care into their practices, providing a much-needed alternative for animals that have run out of options under the umbrella of conventional veterinary medicine. Putting together this issue we were overwhelmed by the depth and range of phenomenal work being done locally to improve animal health and welfare. We have profiled a select few whose work represents the broad intersection of individuals and organizations pushing the movement forward in their townships and municipalities. As BuxMont residents, it should give us a sense of pride knowing that in our communities, creatures great and small are being regarded with humanity, respect and compassion. Together, we are “Making the Awakening” in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

Bio-Identical Hormones WOMEN DO YOU Save the Day MEN DO YOU SUFFER FROM? SUFFER FROM? Swim with the Dolphins in Bimini
S
usan Duval Seminars has a few spots remaining for a unique opportunity to relax, restore and reconnect in Bimini for the week of July 15 through 21. Located just off the coast of Florida, Bimini is a small island renowned for the pods of Atlantic spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins that call it home. With its warm, turquoise waters, Bimini is considered paradise for people seeking to spiritually connect— and to and swim with these wise and beautiful creatures. “This is my very favorite of all the Sacred Journeys we offer,” says Susan Duval. “This is truly the trip of a lifetime.” Limited to 12 people, the adventure includes an afternoon boat excursion each day to swim with (but not touch) the dolphins in the sea. A dolphin researcher will join the group on land and sea to share knowledge of the dolphins. Participants will also snorkel over the Bimini road, reputed to be part of ancient Atlantis. Everyone can participate, regardless of swimming skills. Free time is available to explore the island on golf carts, visit the Healing Hole in the mangroves, see the famed Dolphin House, tour the Bimini Museum, relax on the beaches, shop at the Straw markets and get to know new friends. Lodging will be at the Sea Crest Hotel, and a private chef will prepare three gourmet meals each day, accommodating special dietary requirements as needed. Tour members traveling alone can be matched with a roommate, or single rooms are available for a supplement. Cost: $2,165, not including airfare, transfer fees or gratuities. roy and Wendy Jochems, owners of Hope Hill Lavender Farm, invite the public to attend their grand opening event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on May 13, celebrating their new lavender farm store at 2375 Panther Valley Road, Pottsville. The southern Schuylkill County farm, which is centrally located to Harrisburg, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and the Poconos, is coordinating the event with its yearly lavender plant sale. “The farm store is a major upgrade to working off of a farm cart for the last five years,” says Wendy Jochems. ake the first step toward a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle at the Empowered Light Holistic Expo. The expo runs from 5 to 9 p.m., April 28, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 29 and 30, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, 100 Station Avenue, Oaks. Admission is $5 on Friday, $10 on Saturday and Sunday, and $20 for a weekend pass. Now in its second year, the expo’s focus is on holistic lifestyles, spiritual classes and personal development. “So many people are looking for answers! They need healthier ways to handle the increasing stress they’re facing,” says the expo’s founder, Sue Greenwald, who is also the owner of Thrive Yoga, in Malvern. “The Expo offers structure, new friends, new ideas and, most of all, a community where people feel supported.” Participants can take part in yoga, meditation, tai chi, sound healing, reiki and massage demonstrations, and choose from over 30 workshops and lectures over the course of the weekend. Renowned spiritual medium Joseph Tittel is among the scheduled speakers, as well as experts on topics such as essential oils and developing your intuition. “We have dozens of vendors with a variety of merchandise, such as salt lamps, candles, tapestries and gems,” says Greenwald. “But the expo isn’t about selling stuff; it’s about fostering a fun and healing environment for the community to explore and connect.” In keeping with its mission to promote healthy living in a healthy planet and engage with the community, Natural Awakenings magazines from Bucks and Montgomery counties, Chester and Delaware counties and Philadelphia are proud to be this event’s media sponsors. Natural Awakenings BuxMont publisher Karen G. Meshkov offers, “One of the most powerful ways we have to create transformation is when we are together, in community.”

newsbriefs Wellness Institute’s Hypnotherapy Weight Loss Comes to Doylestown
D
oylestown Board-Certified Professional Counselor and Clinical Hypnotherapist Beth Herman is launching a six-week TRIM-LIFE weight release program beginning in early May. Developed by the Wellness Institute of Washington and offered at the Cleveland Clinic for Integrative Medicine since 2010, the program uses hypnosis and counseling to help people lose weight. Over six sessions, Herman guides participants to discover the triggers and underlying emotions behind unhealthy eating habits that weigh them down. Once people recognize them, they can use techniques like mindfulness, meditation and visualization to change their unwanted behaviors and avoid giving in to their cravings. The program is geared toward people that have had trouble losing weight through dieting or experience cycles of losing weight and gaining it back. As a weight release program, TRIM-LIFE focuses on the causes of weight gain to avoid putting on those pounds before having to work on losing them. “Diets are restrictive, and when you are restrictive, at some point you will want whatever it is again,” explains Herman. “If you don’t address the emotional issues, you can only go so long before a trigger comes back.” This spring is the first time Herman is holding the full sixweek program. Recently, she used each part of the program in separate trial sessions with clients, and she reports that the results were positive and powerful. One client identified her triggers after just one session. Another began “quietly losing weight” almost immediately. With years of experience as a licensed, board-certified professional counselor and certified clinical hypnotherapist, Herman combines hypnosis with holistic therapy techniques like proper breathing and meditation to help people improve their lives. “When you become aware of your emotional triggers, you can heal them,” Herman assures. Location: The Farm at Doylestown, 605 Farm Lane. For more information, call 215-348-8900 or visit BethHerman Therapist.com. See ad, page 6.

Wink Optical Welcomes New Optometrist ‘Home’

Correction
ink Optical welcomes a new resident optometrist, Dr. Stacey Filippo Tyran, to its eyecare boutique in Jenkintown. Filippo is a Langhorne native who, after receiving her undergraduate degree from University of Delaware, decided to follow her father’s footsteps into optometry. She attended and graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry (currently Salus University) in Elkins Park, and has been in private practice locally for over 20 years. Filippo is pleased to be serving the community so close to where she trained, saying, “This is such a great area—I’m glad to be back.” Filippo’s focus is primary Dr. Stacey Filippo Tyran care optometry; she particularly enjoys working with children, fitting contact lenses and interacting in a personal and consultative fashion with her patients. “I like to give advice on glasses based on a patient’s lifestyle and work environment, and to spend time learning how they use their eyes throughout the day,” says Filippo. Wink Optical is a part of the Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs (PEL) family of eyecare centers. PEL is a fifth generation, woman-owned business with area locations in Center City, South Philadelphia, Ardmore, Bensalem and East Norriton. INVISALIGN Mercury Free Zirconium Implants Non-Metal Restorations
Last month’s article “Proof of Poison: The Mercury Amalgam Debate Pushes On” reported that two mercury exposure lawsuits were fought and won in Pennsylvania. The lawsuits were fought and won by Pennsylvanians, but one was filed in Pennsylvania and the other in New York. Karen Palmer’s workers’ compensation case, reported as a disability case, was officially a case claiming illness and injury. The corrected information appears in our digital magazine and on our online blog, both of which are available at NABuxMont.com.

Tai Chi Eases Chronic Neck Pain
eat well
A
study from Harvard Medical School, in Boston, has found that tai chi, a low-impact exercise and movement meditation, can help relieve chronic neck pain. Researchers divided 14 participants, 18 years or older, with ongoing neck pain into three randomized groups. One received 12 weeks of tai chi instruction, one performed group neck exercises and one received no treatment. “The study results showed that 12 weeks of tai chi was more effective than no treatment for benefiting pain levels, disability, quality of life and postural control in persons with chronic neck pain,” explains Peter M. Wayne, Ph.D., coauthor of the study; he’s also the founder of the Tree of Life Tai Chi Center and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. The group neck exercise subjects experienced results that were similar to those in the tai chi group, suggesting that the two paths are equally effective.

psychology and neuroscience. Quickly shift your brain from a ‘negative’, ‘neutral’, or ‘stressed’ state to a POSITIVE state.
A
study from the University of Eastern Finland, in Kuopio, has found that less active boys perform worse in reading and arithmetic classes than their more active counterparts. Researchers studied 89 boys and 69 girls ages 6 to 8 and measured their sedentary time and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) time using a heart rate monitor, movement sensors and body fat percentages. The subjects’ arithmetic and reading skills were calculated using standardized test scores. Comparing the data, the researchers found that higher levels of MVPA were associated with higher reading fluency in grade one and that lower reading levels were associated with more sedentary time in grades one through three. A significantly stronger correlation was discovered when male subjects were the focus. Sedentary boys that spent less time engaged in MVPA displayed consistently poorer scores in both reading fluency and comprehension than their peers. For girls, more sedentary time was associated with better arithmetic scores.

arefoot running has become a popular activity for athletes, and with the right training, can be a helpful tool for many runners. A recent study from the University of Jaén, in Spain, confirms the benefits of barefoot running. Researchers set out to determine what types of changes a 12-week program of barefoot running would produce in foot strike patterns, inversion, eversion and foot rotation. Thirty-nine recreational athletes with no experience in barefoot running participated. Twenty formed the experimental group, with 19 serving as a control group. Researchers determined each runner’s low, high and comfortable running speed and conducted pre- and post-running tests using cameras to document foot strike patterns. The experimental group’s training consisted of a progressive increase in the duration and frequency of barefoot running, while those in the control group performed the same progressive running program with their shoes on. The experimental group showed significant changes in foot strike pattern, with a tendency toward a midfoot strike at all speeds. They also displayed changes in foot rotation and inversion toward a more centered strike at the lower speed, supporting the notion that progressive barefoot training can help athletes trying to change their foot pattern to a mid- or front-foot strike.

Saving Sharks
Cabeca de Marmore/Shutterstock.com
The Pacific island nation of Kiribati has established the world’s second-largest (1.3 million-square-mile) shark sanctuary, which bans commercial fishing throughout, and has also expanded the Micronesia Regional Shark Sanctuary. The possession, trade and sale of sharks and shark products are also prohibited in these areas as is the use of fishing gear such as wire leaders for targeting sharks. Worldwide, about 100 million sharks are killed each year in commercial fisheries. Nearly 30 percent of all known shark species assessed by scientists are now threatened with extinction. Sharks are particularly vulnerable to overfishing because they mature and reproduce slowly. Many Pacific island nations have established shark sanctuaries, recognizing the valuable ecosystem and economic roles that healthy populations provide. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora recently added 13 shark and mobula ray species to its list, a step toward ensuring sustainable and legal trade of these species.

Traffic Pollution Chokes Big Cities Worldwide When air pollution blanketed Paris for three days, authorities called it the worst bout in 10 years and made public transit free. For the fourth time in 20 years, the city instituted a system based on alternating odd and even license plate numbers to keep certain vehicles off city streets, effectively cutting daily traffic in half; it’s the first time the ban’s been maintained for consecutive days. “Cars are poisoning the air,” says Paris city hall transport official Herve Levife. “We need to take preventive measures.” Three other cities—Athens, Madrid and Mexico City—will ban diesel engines by 2025 as part of a similar effort. Beijing, China’s capital city, has such dirty skies from cars and coal that protective masks are commonplace despite emissions restrictions and power plant closures, partly due to pollutants from neighboring regions. Paris leads the world in monthly car-free days, but several large metro cities participate in an international car-free day each September 22, including Washington, D.C., Seattle and Long Island, New York. Many grocery store foods are wrapped in plastic packaging that creates non-recyclable, non-biodegradable waste, even though thin, plastic films are not efficient at preventing spoilage. Some plastics are also suspected of leaching harmful compounds into food. Researcher Peggy Tomasula, D.Sc., is leading a U.S. Department of Agriculture team developing an environmentally friendly film made of the milk protein casein that addresses these issues. She states, “The protein-based films are powerful oxygen blockers that help prevent food spoilage. When used in packaging, they could prevent food waste during distribution along the food chain.” Plastic six-pack rings are renowned for their negative impact on wildlife and the environment. Now the Saltwater Brewery, in Delray Beach, Florida, is making edible six-pack rings for beer cans that are 100 percent biodegradable. Constructed of barley and wheat ribbons from the brewing process, they can be safely eaten by animals that come into contact with the refuse. Company President Chris Gove notes, “We hope to influence the big guys and inspire them to get on board.” Source: American Chemical Society

Growing Organics
According to data service Mercaris, the U.S. had a record 4.1 million acres of organic farmland in 2016, an 11 percent increase over 2014. As of June 2016, the number of certified organic farms reached 14,979, including 1,000 startups. The top states in organic cropland after California, with 688,000 acres, are Montana, Wisconsin, New York and North Dakota. Montana hosted a 30 percent increase to 417,000 acres in 2016, adding 100,000 acres since 2014 and 50 new organic farms. In assessing the positive trend, Scott Shander, a Mercaris economist, says, “With today’s lower commodity grain prices, farmers are looking to add value and meet consumer demands. The global market is dictating U.S. prices. Demand for organic corn and soybeans is still growing strongly, but production is not growing as fast, so more of the production will be international.”

s wedding season approaches, many lovebirds are hesitant to discuss an important topic: prenuptial agreements. There is a misconception associated with prenuptial agreements—the idea that someone is planning for the end of a marriage. “Prenuptial agreements are actually a way to ensure that the love and respect we have at the start of our marriages will always govern our behavior,” says attorney Jennifer J. Riley, who has offices in Blue Bell and Wayne. Riley indicates that she often drafts prenuptial agreements for clients that are clearly in love and excited for their weddings. As she explains, “The most important part of a prenuptial agreement is that the parties reach an agreement, together, before the marriage, during the time in their lives when they might very well be the most in love. This means that, if something happens years later, the sadness and pain of the divorce will not cloud decision-making. The prenuptial agreement, which they designed, together, when they were happy, will guide their divorce and settlement many years later, and help them treat each other with respect and love.” Riley analogizes postnuptial agreements with car insurance. “No one wants to be in a car accident, and we all do everything we can to avoid one. But we plan, when we are healthy and safe, for the possibility of a time when we might not be,” she says. “Prenuptial agreements can help keep someone whole during a time that feels unsafe and threatening.” Law Offices of Jennifer J. Riley are located at 585 Skippack Pk., Ste. 200, Blue Bell and 900 W. Valley Rd., Ste. 703, Wayne. For more information, call 215-283-5080, email Jennifer@jjrLaw Firm.com or visit jjrLawFirm.com. ealing is the cornerstone of Nu You Skin Care and Wellness Centers, with locations in Ambler and Langhorne, where an atmosphere of healing and rejuvenation pampers the body and soul. Gerry Christopher, owner and licensed esthetician, believes education is key to helping clients understand that healthy skin comes from the inside out. “We assist clients in making good decisions about what they put on their skin and into their body. For example, acne is the body’s way of looking for attention. Changing not only a skin care regimen but also eating habits can make a big difference,” she explains. “Our products are all-natural, organic, vegan and free of hazardous chemicals, designed to heal the dermis and accommodate clients with sensitive skin, and can be shipped all over the country.” Comprehensive consultations for women, men and children––available in person or via Skype and email–– provide skin care guidance and an overall review. As certified oncology estheticians, the staff has specific treatments to assist clients dealing with chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Revolutionary infusion peels effectively treat skin issues and deeply nourish the skin, increase circulation and stimulate collagen production by using the most potent form of vitamin A, without the use of harsh chemicals. Christopher traveled to London to receive UK/European certification in male waxing, and notes that Nu You Skin Care specializes in male waxing from head to toe, using gentle, yet effective, professional waxes. The menu of services also includes organic facials, hydrofacials, female waxing, reiki, reflexology, therapeutic massage and LED light therapy.

hen people walk through Red Hill Medical’s door for the first time, they immediately marvel over how relaxed and nurtured they feel. Exposed brick walls, sunny windows and a convenient location (five minutes from Kimberton Whole Foods) are a few of the ingredients that make this space such a perfect spot for an integrative medical practice. “It’s all about being present for each person,” says Dr. Kristann Heinz, MD, RD, the practice’s co-founder along with Falecia Wasicko, RN, LMT. And there’s space to spare—Red Hill Medical is currently seeking like-minded, holistic practitioners to share space and resources at its Pipersville location. The space’s presence owes itself to the close-knit doctornurse team of Heinz and Wasicko. This team uses a heartcentered and open-eared approach to integrative medicine. “We value working with our patients, finding the root causes of their concerns, addressing their goals and moving toward optimal health together,” says Heinz. Heinz offers functional medical consultations, acupuncture and nutritional interventions (she was a registered dietitian prior to being a medical doctor), while Wasicko provides health coaching, education and massage therapy. Wasicko is trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction through the Mindfulness Institute at Jefferson University and teaches meditation classes. Red Hill Medical also utilizes trusted practitioners outside of its own practice when needed, and it welcomes those practitioners to find a home in the Red Hill Medical community space. In addition to medical consultations and holistic care, Red Hill Medical offers workshops, cooking and fermentation classes, detox cleanses (the next one is a food-based, six-week Spring Renewal Cleanse with weekly check-ins) and meditation groups. Location: 7137 Old Easton Rd., Ste. 101, Pipersville. othing evokes a sense of ease quite like a soft, smiling, tail-wagging dog looking up for a bit of affection. While numerous dog lovers are familiar with this feeling, many may not know how it can bring greater therapeutic benefits to others. Meet Therapy Dogs International (TDI), a non-profit organization based in Flanders, New Jersey, whose mission is to bring health and well-being through visits by four-legged friends to institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, memory care facilities and wherever else therapy dogs are needed. “When people encounter a therapy dog, their mood immediately improves—they become more relaxed, and their blood pressure drops,” says Bob Wharton, director of TDI Bucks County Chapter #294. Founded in 1976, Therapy Dogs International has expanded to 23,000 dog/handler teams with nearly 300 chapters across the country and continues to grow. Wharton, who began this chapter only in 2015, already has 49 therapy dogs and handlers that not only service Bucks County, but also Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware and MontNABuxMont.com
gomery counties. He expects the number of dogs to increase substantially in the coming year due to its growing response. Wharton first became interested in Therapy Dogs International after having acquired a golden retriever with a wonderful disposition that he wanted to share. “Any dog can be a therapy dog as long as they have the right temperament. Our therapy dogs range from chihuahuas to Saint Bernards to rottweilers,” Wharton says, noting that therapy dogs have to pass a rigorous obedience test in order to become certified. According to Wharton, the immediate effect therapy dogs have on people is remarkable to see. “One time we were at a location where a patient began having a breakdown. Their blood pressure was sky-high, and the nurse was having trouble calming her down so she motioned for me to bring the dog over to see if that would help. The patient began petting the dog and within 15 minutes she began to relax and her blood pressure came down. It’s incredible to witness these results, especially when it doesn’t involve medical intervention.” Through TDI, Wharton has also seen people get over their long-time

fear of dogs. “The temperament of a therapy dog is so gentle and non-intimidating. It’s wonderful to see someone’s reservations be replaced by affection and interaction,” he says. Therapy dogs have had a wide range of applications and benefits, from bringing comfort and companionship, to nursing homes, to helping build confidence and communication among young children. “Therapy dogs have worked oneon-one with children who are reserved to participate in class. We start by having the child read to the dog which helps them not only become better readers, but also get over the fear of reading out loud in front of their peers,” says Wharton. “We’ve also used therapy dogs to work in the classroom with autistic children, and have seen positive effects in the way they help encourage response and communication. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how such a simple tool can have such a positive effect.” To learn more about Therapy Dogs International and how to get involved, visit Tdi-Dog.org or visit the Bucks County Chapter #294 Facebook page at Facebook.com/tdichapter294. PET PROGRESSIVE Holistic Veterinary Care and What It Can Do for You by Lauren Johnson
W
hen it comes to the care of our beloved pets, one thing is certain: we want only the best. For many, this comes with finding a veterinarian we can trust that shares our point of view. Holistic veterinary care offers a unique approach using alternative methods to assess an animal’s health. “Oftentimes conventional veterinary medicine looks at ways to put out fires but doesn’t look at how they started in the first place to prevent them from coming back, and this is where holistic care can really help,” says Suzanne Walski, DVM, owner of Meadowbrook Animal Healing, in Ottsville. “Holistic care takes a different

approach, looking at the whole being and treating it emotionally, physically and even spiritually.” Walski, who began as a conventional veterinarian, is not a purist when it comes to holistic health. Sometimes conventional care is needed, and she encourages people to continue with their regular Dr. Sue Walski vet while using her as a consultant. “My approach is: ‘What else can we do aside from what is necessary to do?’ I’m passionate about educating people about alternative methods that can be helpful not only for their pet, but for themselves as well.” Walski began her journey into holistic vet care after suffering from physical health issues of her own that weren’t improving with the use of conventional medicine. After heeding the advice of a friend to try chiropractic care and finally seeing results, she began investigating other types of alternative methods like acupuncture and Chinese herbs. “If my health can improve with alternative methods, the health of an animal can too,” says Walski, who has since become certified in animal chiropractic and acupuncture, using both in her practice. “I love when people see these methods work for their pets and start to explore them as ways to improve their own health. It’s a wonderful way to educate people about other options.” Another way Walski’s practice is unique is that she creates a completely individualized experience for both the owner and their pet. “It’s not a hustle-bustle type of practice. When you come into my office you’re the only client—you and your animal get undivided attention by me, which really helps animals that hate going to the vet. It feels more like a spa day, and they look forward to it,” she says, adding that she also uses Bach Flower essences and pheromones to help put both the animals and owners at ease upon arrival. When asked whether holistic veterinary care will be the wave of the future, Walski says she believes it will certainly have its part. “I believe holistic care is something that will continue to grow. Will it be a takeover? No—because that’s what holistic is all about. It’s about incorporating the best of both worlds in order to find a solution.” Location: 4089 Durham Rd. (Rte. 412), Ottsville. FLYING FOR LIFE Rescue Pilot Scott Messinger’s Mission Soars by Nancy Bragin
C
lark Kent doesn’t look like a superhero until he takes off and flies as Superman. It’s the same with Scott Messinger, whose day job is CEO of Eyeland Optical, a chain of 14 family-owned optical centers in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. To save travel time, Messinger learned to fly and began traveling to work in a small, singleengine airplane. His transformation began in the fall of 2010. “I read an article written by a former animal control manager at a county animal shelter in the south, who said the job was ‘hurting his heart and killing his soul,’” says Messinger. Soon after, as a favor for a friend, he flew from Philadelphia to a shelter in Louisiana to rescue some dogs that were about to be euthanized. Messinger recalls, “As I travelled through the southern states I saw pet owners facing heartbreaking decisions.

They were losing their jobs and homes due to the economy and simply could not afford to feed their pets. I learned that bringing a pet to a southern animal shelter is often a death sentence. These shelters are often overflowing with dogs and cats that once knew the joys of a family and a warm bed, but are almost surely destined to be put down. It’s the kind of thing that once your eyes are opened and you really see what’s going on, you sort of can’t un-see it; you can never get it out of your head.” The deal was sealed and the transformation to rescue hero quietly began. Messinger removed all five passenger seats and converted the airplane into a flying kennel, complete with floor-to-ceiling cages. In no time he was flying regular rescue runs to and from Louisiana, became a volunteer pilot for Pilots N Paws—an award-winning animal non-profit with over 4,300 volunteer pilots—and founded Eyeland Rescue, where he donates his time and his plane. He covers the costs associated with transporting rescued dogs to a new home solely through Eyeland Optical Centers, where a portion of every purchase goes to fund shelter rescue. On July 19 of last year, Messinger marked his “6,000 Rescues” milestone by flying seven abandoned dogs from flood-ravaged Charleston West Virginia, facilitated by B.A.R.C., Boone Animal Rescue Coalition of Danville, West Virginia, to Northeast Philadelphia Airport. There they were met by staff from Providence Animal Center, in Media, Pennsylvania, that transported the precious cargo to safety and groomed the dogs for forever homes. This happy saga of shelter animals and their rescue is far from over. Messinger has his eyes set on 10,000 rescues and beyond. He credits his wonderful Eyeland patients, whom he calls “rescue partners”, saying their loyalty is what keeps the Eyeland Rescue plane in the air. For more information, visit EyelandOptical.com. Logan’s Heroes Brings Vets and Pets to Heal by Grace Antonini
I
t’s a uniquely beautiful kind of healing that takes place when two beings, weakened by a traumatic past or disability, find support, strength and love in one another. At Logan’s Heroes Animal Rescue, in Lehigh County, healing is forged by the animal-human bond. This nonprofit organization embodies the spirit of Logan, a young German Shepherd who was purchased at a pet shop and eventually returned by the family that bought him because of a congenital disability. By that time, sadly, it was too late for Logan to be saved. Inspired by this tragic experience, Logan’s Heroes was formed with the purpose of joining rescued animals from dire situations (such as puppy mills and commercial kennels) with people suffering from trauma and disabilities. Logan’s Heroes focuses on veterans that dedicated their lives to military service and are consequently living with conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Logan’s Heroes is able to accomplish the rescue of animals and people through the help of its foster homes, volunteers and donors. As of November this past year, it has expanded its adoption facility to a 54-acre farm in East Greenville, directly off of Kings Highway. Its programs are also expanding to include equine rescue and horse-human healing in its Rescue Equines Symbiotic Therapy & Training (RESTT) program, which is free of charge to veterans. “We hope to bring veterans into our equine program to allow them hands-on time to bond with horses that have been neglected or abused, so they learn from each other how to cope with their past and build a new life,“ says Board President Chris Baringer. The organization is growing rapidly to accommodate horses and other animals that have lost their homes due to humane care issues and economic hardship. “We are always looking for people who want to help support our mission,” shares Event Coordinator Janine Horning. For more information, call 267-261-7272, email Janine@ lharinc.org or visit lharinc.org. Grace Antonini is a Bucks County writer, yoga teacher and forest walker. Connect at Grace.Antonini@gmail.com.

Sanctuary and Holistic Care for Ravens Nest Rescues by Carrie Jackson
F
orgotten animals can get a second chance to thrive at the Ravens Nest Rescue Farm and Sanctuary. The farm, located on just under one acre in Feasterville, offers a safe haven to animals that have been abused, abandoned, neglected or are otherwise unwanted. The farm takes a wide range of animals that include chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, dogs, ferrets and other small, farm favorites. Lisa Rogers is the director of the farm, which is a nonprofit organization entirely staffed by volunteers. “We are more than just a rescue farm. We are a network of people who provide foster care and lovesaved to seemingly unadoptable my husband’s life; hetohas animals, and a sanctuary those we adopt or place into Dr. the Meshcommubeen can’t in good health under she says.now The animals are cared ’s carenity,” for 20 years for with essential oils, energy work and other holistic therapies. Ravens Nest raises money through a weekly, organic CSA it offers to the
community and by operating an online thrift store. “Many local high schoolers come in on a weekly basis and help with the care, feeding and rehabilitation of the animals. It’s an important opportunity for them to get away from their electronic devices and connect with nature,” says Rogers. The farm is currently seeking volunteers to help rebuild the 900-square-foot bird run, and to offer complimentary or discounted veterinary services.
At Ravens Nest Rescue Farm and Sanctuary, the main focus is on education to prevent animal abuse and neglect. “There are a lot of misconceptions about farm animals. For example, rabbits are not meant to live in a hutch outside. They are social creatures and need daily care and attention,” says Rogers. The farm hosts a number of events throughout the year to educate and involve the community. “We have an Easter egg hunt in the spring and a pumpkin patch in the fall,” says Rogers. “Families can visit with the animals in a safe and fun environment.” For more information, call 215-484-002, email TheRavensNestRescueFarm@ gmail.com or visit Facebook.com/The RavensNestRescueFarmAndSanctuary. new people. They do not like sharing the home with any other animals; want your undivided attention. Do not like to be left alone, and tend to become a bit destructive if left alone too long.
LEO
YOUR PET: Leo pets feel they are king or queen of the castle. Love a good adventure and will roam as far as you will let them, so each time you go outside with your pet, make it an event. Are born leaders and may soon have a pack of friends following them. Are quite curious and consider nothing off limits. Leo animals love children and make “purr-fect” pets. Are very protective and would gladly give their lives for yours. Have a long memory and tend to have a long life span.
s pet owners, it’s not unusual to wonder how our furry friends got their funny habits. We may ask ourselves why a kitten is so quirky or if we will meld well with a new pet. The answers could be determined by a pet’s date of birth and how astrology affects its character. An effective way to ensure an easier time raising pets is through understanding what makes them tick and how their basic behavior will evolve depending on their astrological sign. The following shows the basic Sun Sign characteristics of pets.
ARIES
YOUR PET: Aries cats and dogs are bursting with energy. Love attention, petting and cuddling and are never shy. Quick tempered, they are not the type to back down from a fight. They are easily embarrassed, so don’t scold them in public. The most difficult aspect of keeping an Aries pet is obedience. May be difficult to housebreak. Firmness, a schedule and repetition is what is needed.
TAURUS
YOUR PET: Taurus pets are quiet and passive and the easiest in the Zodiac to train. However, if they are provoked into fighting—watch out! These animals never give up. Are cautious about meeting new people, but when they like you, you are a friend 32

for life. Always remember your “scent”. These animals love to be outdoors, but may prefer sleeping to playing. Are possessive and will guard their food and toys fiercely.
VIRGO
YOUR PET: Gemini pets are curious, friendly and loaded with energy. These dogs bark a lot. If possible, get them a playmate; they hate to be alone. Are fast learners and can be trained well. Remember to always keep the door shut, or they will be off in a flash, exploring and looking for new friends. With both people and other animals, Gemini pets rarely have favorites. They love the company of everyone.
YOUR PET: Virgo pets are wonderful companions and make great Seeing Eye dogs. A sixth sense lets them know when you are unhappy or sick, and they are always there to comfort you. They’re shy animals, preferring their own company, and are content to play by themselves. Are reserved and won’t show their affections easily. Don’t expect your Virgo pet to come running to you when you get home, however, they will gladly spend entire evenings lying at your feet or resting their head on your lap. Are fussy eaters; once you’ve found them a good brand of pet food, stick with it.
CANCER
LIBRA
GEMINI
YOUR PET: These little pets are very sensitive creatures and hate to be upset. Do not like loud noise or yelling. Are easily irritated by others and thrive on a calm, stable environment. Any change in routine, or if a stranger is in the house, can cause them to retreat and be gone for hours and even days. Cancer pets are cautious about meeting NABuxMont.com
YOUR PET: Libra pets are easygoing and enjoy lots of attention. Like the scales of justice that represent this sign, these pets divide their attention equally among all members of the family. Make wonderful companions and hate to be left alone. Put music on when you leave home and will remain mild mannered with a gentle disposition.

endless endurance and will play happily for hours on end. Make the best playmates for children. Can be moody and tend to sulk if they don’t get their way. Be patient when training these pets as they tend to be slow learners. Are more than loyal to the family. They are always determined to please and your patience will be well rewarded. Are stubborn at times, and may disappear to sulk. Libra pets will eat just about anything; combine this with a tendency to be lazy, and they can put on a lot of extra weight. Be sure to give them plenty of exercise.
SCORPIO
YOUR PET: Scorpio pets are extremely loyal. Kindness shown to these animals at an early age will come back to you for the rest of their pet life. If they are mistreated early in life, gaining trust back will be a long and involved process. Tend to snap or nip if they have been mistreated. Scorpio pets are intimidating to other animals. Rarely will they back down from a confrontation. Are full of pent up energy and need to run around to release it. Keep a close watch on them, however, as they are possessive and have a tendency to fight. (Watch them closely with mailmen or delivery people.)
SAGITTARIUS
YOUR PET: Sagittarius pets are the fun-loving clowns of the animal world; are always eager to please. Love the outdoors; be sure to give them plenty of room to roam. If you keep them inside for long periods of time, this tends to break their spirit. Are intelligent animals but lack common sense. Can become quite forgetful when overexcited. Are one of the most loving pets in the Zodiac; expect a face full of wet kisses when you walk through the door. As they tend to be forgetful, you must be firm when you discipline these animals. Don’t worry or be afraid to set strong limits! They will respond well.
CAPRICORN
YOUR PET: Capricorn pets stay young forever and tend to act like little puppies or kittens well into old age. Have
Paw Wax Protects Furry Feet from the Elements
AQUARIUS
YOUR PET: Aquarius pets are the comedians of the Zodiac. Are gentle and loving with children and will bark or meow just to hear the sound of their own voices. Are extremely intelligent but unbelievably scatterbrained. You need lots of patience when you train them. Do not obey orders easily and the more you push them, the deeper they will put their paws into the ground. Sometimes these pets don’t want to be cuddled or petted, but remain aloof. Aquarius pets are curious and inquisitive; will literally push their noses into everything.
PISCES
YOUR PET: Pisces pets are gentle, peace-loving pets that hate shouting and fighting. Are sensitive to your moods and will plant themselves securely at your side if you are sick and upset. If your Pisces pet needs discipline, be very careful how you go about it. Tend to be quite intuitive and can sense when you are angry or upset. Will stop what they are doing in order to please you. Don’t need a lot of space and are good pets for people living in condos or apartments. You may begin to feel as if you have a “psychic link” with these animals because they can easily pick up on your thoughts. They also love music. andy St. MartinePack, owner of Green Street Luxuries, in Lansdale, has perfected a skin product for dogs called Paw Wax through her skincare line, GSL Organics. Made of organic and natural ingredients that include beeswax, calendula, avocado and coconut oils, Paw Wax safely protects paws from water, snow, salt, ice and chemicals. “I always had the recipe,” says St. Martine-Pack, who started a monthly, live Facebook chat that’s held the first Wednesday of each month. “In a recent chat session pet care came up, including paw wax, and many people asked me to make it.” To use, simply rub paws directly in the 1.5 oz. tin. For larger dogs, put some on the hand first and rub into paws before walking in rain, snow, ice and salt. Paw Wax is the newest in the GSL Organics line of pet products, which also includes Doggie Wash and Bella Dog Oil. “I also have recipes for cats,” adds St. Martine-Pack. While Paw Wax for cats is not listed on the GSL Organics website, St. Martine-Pack says she can make it as requested. The ingredients in Paw Wax work together to moisturize, promote fast healing and act as an antibacterial and antifungal agent. All GSL Organics products are vegan and vegetarian friendly, safe for all ages and skin issues and are paraben-, sodium lauryl sulfateand gluten-free. Location: 617 W. Main St., Lansdale. The newly expanded facilities include multiple exam rooms, including a wonderful new space for holistic care, a surgical suite, acupuncture, a full homeopathic program and laser therapy. While preventive care, nutritional guidance and health maintenance are an integral part of its services, Weis shares that DVH often sees cases that other veterinarians have turned away or determined to be “lost causes”. She says a common refrain heard from the waiting room is, “Well, we’ve tried everything else.” Lucky for Buddy, and others like him in Bucks County, that DVH is leaving the light on, and pushing the boundaries of convention to develop innovative protocols for increased pet health, happiness and longevity. Doylestown Veterinary Hospital and Holistic Pet Care sits adjacent to Holiday House Pet Resort at 380 N. Shady Retreat Rd., in Doylestown. A funeral brings closure, gives permission to grieve and offers an opportunity to remember a life well-lived. Why not do the same for your dog or cat as you would for any other family member?
Saying Goodbye to Pets Memorials Help Ease Grief by Sandra Murphy
A
fter Penny Mitchell lost her Birman cat, Patrick, to cancer, she cried at work. “Do you want me to bring you another cat? My grandmother has a barn full,” said a co-worker. When another cat, Quickie, passed away, she heard, “You had him 17 years; what more do you want?” Mitchell wanted more time with her cats, but more than that, she wanted understanding and respect for her feelings of loss and grief— something a funeral provides. Dog and cat people can be wary about sharing their feelings over the death of an animal and, as Mitchell discovered, subjected to insensitive remarks. The American Pet Products Association estimates that 63 percent of American households include animal companions. Coleen Ellis, owner of Two Hearts Pet Loss Center (TwoHeartsPet LossCenter.com), observes that when the

inevitable happens, “People in the other 37 percent can’t relate or empathize; they just don’t get it.” Ellis opened the first standalone pet funeral home in 2004. She explains, “A funeral brings closure, gives permission to grieve and offers an opportunity to remember a life well-lived. Why not do the same for your dog or cat as you would for any other family member?”
Compassionate Services Funeral homes are beginning to understand that animals are part of the family. Separate rooms may be set aside for memorial services or full funerals, including viewing. The death of your special animal companion is stressful; dealing with professionals can ease the pain and help achieve the kind of service and memory you want. “Grief is what we feel on the inside; mourning is grief shown. A cemNABuxMont.com
etery marker often tells only the name, date of birth or when the pet joined the family and date of death,” Ellis says. “A funeral is for talking about the life lived between those dates.” So, what’s the best way to invite friends and family to a funeral for a dog or cat without feeling awkward? Try, “This has been a hard time for me. It would be a big help if you would be with me when I say goodbye. Remind me of some of the stories I told you about Sparky.” Plan all details beforehand to eliminate the pressure to make on-the-spot decisions during such an emotional time.
Burial or Cremation If burial is your choice, check local ordinances; some communities forbid backyard burials for health reasons. Also keep in mind that you may eventually relocate. A pet cemetery is one option, and some allow humans to be buried there, too. As a rule, human cemeteries are not as flexible—for example, some states say no to animals, while others require separate sections for animals and humans. You can select a standard casket that will protect the body for the long term, or go green with a biodegradable version, made from recycled paper products, cardboard, wicker or sea grass. Elizabeth Fournier, owner of Cornerstone Funeral Services & Cremation (CornerstoneFuneral.com), advises, “A green burial avoids the use of formaldehydebased embalming and concrete vaults. It’s the way funerals used to be.” With cremation, the decision is between private (your animal only, with
ashes returned to you) or communal (more than one animal, no ashes returned). Fournier adds, “I have placed urns with a dog’s or cat’s ashes in caskets of their [human] loved one. The person making the funeral arrangements for the deceased will sheepishly ask if I can do this. They’re always so surprised that it’s quite common.”
Viewing or Memorial Service If an animal has been euthanized at the vet’s office or died in an accident, children may not understand the loss. A viewing, after the animal has been bathed and groomed, may help both youngsters and other family pets understand why the missing animal is no longer around.
introspotlight Vet Provides Humane, In-Home Service for a Pet’s Final Moments by Jack Firneno
Additional Choices “At the funeral for a Pomeranian named Miss Thing, she was in a white knit dress and looked like she was asleep,” recalls Fournier. “I also helped organize a tribute for a cat named Brutus. It included readings from the owner’s journal and all the grandchildren sang What’s New, Pussycat?” Children can choose photos, favorite toys or treats for a tribute table. A memorial service can also accompany a cremation.
Formal or Relaxed Setting Full honors were given to Bo—a cross-trained narcotics/ patrol dog with the Indianapolis Police Department, killed in the line of duty—including an honor guard, floral arrangements and a eulogy by K-9 Commander Lt. Benny Diggs. The local chief of police and sheriff spoke of Bo’s responsibilities and contributions to the community. Stories of Bo’s family life with Scott Johnson, his K-9 handler, rounded out the ceremony. “It wasn’t just the handlers that came—about 100 officers and 50 people from the community also attended,” reports Diggs. “While losing a K-9 [team member] is not the same as losing a human officer, it still has an impact on the whole department. We’ve spent time training, living with and counting on these dogs. They deserve a service.” A golden retriever named Mike had a more casual sendoff. A pet portrait and family photos set next to his urn and a bowl of his favorite treats inspired friends and family to share their favorite Mike stories.
Remembrances and Keepsakes A plaster cast of a pet’s paw print or a clipping of fur for a scrapbook or locket can also keep memories close. Have a guest book for those that come to the service to sign, and also take photos of the tribute table. Hosting a funeral or memorial service for a pet may not be for everyone, but they are becoming increasingly available for those who choose to say goodbye to a beloved companion animal, surrounded by friends and family. They are an outward sign of respect; both for your feelings and the life your four-legged friend lived. Who doesn’t deserve that? D
on and Donna Shields have worked separately for decades helping animals lead better lives. Now, they’ve teamed up to help pet owners make the final moments with their beloved pets peaceful and calm. Last Act of Love is the couple’s at-home euthanasia program, where animals pass away peacefully in their home, surrounded by loved ones. It’s much less painful for the pets, and more comforting for their owners. Now in its third year, Last Act of Love serves all of Bucks County. Don, a veterinarian for more than five decades, first sedates the animal. Then, he and Donna leave the family alone as their pet falls asleep. When they’re ready, he administers the final shots. The couple also provides cremation service through Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park. “You don’t have to take that last, long ride,” says Donna. “You can give your pet a gentle goodbye in the privacy of your own home.” She got the idea for the program while running a cat clinic and adopting many feral felines herself. When a cat needed to be put to sleep, Don, who owned a veterinary hospital for 50 years in Bethayres, would do so at their home. Donna realized how comforting it was this way, and thought others would appreciate the same. She was right: At their first visit, the dog’s owner and grown children all gathered to say their tearful goodbyes. Ashley, a 110-pound English sheepdog, had not moved for nearly two days, as she was in severe pain. After the sedation was given, she was able to pass away peacefully at home in her owner’s arms. Since then, the couple has serviced animals in their favorite part of the house, in yards and under trees. Donna recalls one family placing their pet in a bed with soft church music playing. “People say goodbye in all different ways,” she says. For more information, call 215-485-8780 or 215-485-8782. L
eading environment advocate and author Tony Juniper has been an Earth champion for three decades, imploring humanity to urgently understand that we need nature to thrive. His recently reissued book What Has Nature Ever Done for Us? How Money Really Does Grow on Trees, first published in 2013, won the Independent Publishers Living Now gold medal. It warns about the severe environmental cost of poor land planning; informs how birds, coral reefs, rain forests and other flora and fauna help preserve and sustain our quality of life; pushes for new recycling laws; and seeks to make children early enthusiasts. Formerly executive editor of Friends of the Earth, he serves as president of the Wildlife Trust, in Great Britain, teaching faculty of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership, and is sustainability advisor to Prince Charles, a noted conservationist.
Why do you believe that economic growth and conservation can coexist? We are measuring economic growth
crudely with no sense of quality. One country can have 2 percent gross domestic product growth and at low environmental cost, whereas another measuring similar growth might be both causing massive environmental destruction and concentrating the generated wealth among small numbers of people. We need to grow economies in ways that protect the environmental services that create opportunities for growth in the first place. It’s a major challenge for a world hell-bent on simplistic, crude measures of economic performance. In the Ivory Coast, where I recently visited, many poor rural people grow cocoa. One way to expand its economy is to produce more cocoa at the expense of tropical rain forests, which ultimately destroys the economy because forests are a major source of rainfall. Extended droughts caused by deforestation reveal that kind of growth is self-defeating. We need a more sophisticated approach, with the economy becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of ecology, not the other way around.
Our world doesn’t succeed just on the basis of technology. It’s being run on microorganisms, the actions of forests, seas, soils and everything in the natural world. NABuxMont.com
VA’s East Coast
Are true eco-cities and eco-suburbs feasible? We can design much more livable areas for the protection and health of wildlife, nature and residents. Nature also has a major bearing on the costs of a country’s healthcare system. A number of population level studies, including from the Netherlands, reveal how people with access to green space feel better and experience higher levels of well-being, especially in mental and psychological health. Many Western countries are seeing increased incidences of depression, anxiety and other psychological problems that can be reduced through greater access to open areas, green spaces and wildlife. We can expect massive increases in urban areas worldwide in the next 40 years. There’s an opportunity now to plan in integral ways to make these places better for everyone. Failing to integrate nature into them will ramp up the public health costs later on.
What can citizens do to strengthen U.S. environmental policies? First, every election has candidates we can vote for that are more or less knowledgeable and clued into environmental issues. Second, we can exercise power in our purchasing choices. Some companies take leadership positions on environmental and sustainability issues; others don’t. With some research, shoppers can find the best companies to patronize, like those that prioritize low-carbon emissions, resource efficiencies and environmental protection policies. Many of them are advocating for more sensible, long-term environmental policies. In the U.S., one of the biggest pushbacks to the new administration will be from progressive companies that know the future has to be green; buying from these businesses strengthens their role and influence. Third, we can add to the people’s collective voice by joining campaigns and backing Earth-conscious organizations like the National Audubon Society, Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network and Sierra Club.
Why do you believe it’s important to instill basic ecological principles in youngsters? In the future, if fewer people understand the implications of climate change, ecosystem degradation, loss of wild animals and rampant toxic pollution, it’ll be even harder to embed adequate responses. The next generation should know how this planet works. Our world doesn’t succeed just on the basis of technology. It’s being run on microorganisms, the actions of forests, seas, soils and everything in the natural world. People that don’t know this can do a lot of damage. When more young people know the basics, it’s more likely they’ll behave in ways that reflect them. Progressive urbanization, with ever fewer people having direct experience of how nature works, is already an issue, so investing in our youth now will pay dividends in their future. A Home and Haven for the Eco-Minded by Karen G. Meshkov
R
eal estate development and environmental protection frequently don’t go hand in hand, particularly along the East Coast. It’s refreshing to know that there are places where naturalists, preservationists and ecologists have worked alongside real estate interests to develop residential opportunities that ensure the beauty, safety and preservation of the natural habitat. Virginia’s Eastern Shore—the area that surrounds the Chesapeake Bay and the numerous rivers, creeks and coves that feed into it—is one such place. Located just a few hours south of Washington, D.C. and less than a day’s drive from the Philadelphia metropolitan area, this area is frequently regarded as one of the best places in the country to live or retire. Its rich, seaside culture is conducive to fishing, boating, “beaching”, kayaking and taking nature walks; the mean average temperature is a comfortable and thermostat-friendly 59 degrees. It isn’t by accident that this area possesses such glory: The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and the Commonwealth of Virginia have invested more than $100-million to protect and restore 133,000 acres of coastal and mainland habitats, including barrier islands, marshes and upland forests. Their efforts have led to a reintroduction of a species of bay scallops to the coastal bays, which had not been seen there for more than 80 years. Incredibly, this area is still a “best kept secret”, with affordable residences for ecologically inclined East Coast folks to tour, vacation and make their home. Most of the homes are on large, three- to five-acre tracts, and zoning is for single family units. These protections come from the commitment to environmental conservation, but the benefit for the homeowner is a spacious lot with excellent views and, in many cases, waterfront or beachfront access. The Kirkwood Group offers beautiful waterfront properties, beachfront properties and water access properties along the Chesapeake Bay and the creeks and coves that feed into the bay. For example, Gull Point offers a 3,525-square-foot waterfront retreat on 2.88 acres, or build your dream home on one of Peaceful Beach’s expansive wooded sites. ecky AustillClausen is the definition of likable. Her unmistakable Boston accent exudes a feistiness and warmth; she remembers your name, your interests, even your life’s minutiae, and relays her accomplishments without the pomp and circumstance one might assume from a highly successful businesswoman, former college teacher, author and gifted intuitive. While she now calls Chester County home, this “pastor’s kid” was raised in a Boston suburb. Despite her father’s profession, Austill-Clausen says, “Religion just didn’t work for me.” What really excited her was academics and a good challenge. By high school, she was holding down multiple jobs while maintaining a stellar GPA. It was during a four-year experience volunteering for a nursing home when Austill-Clausen discovered her passion for health care and, ultimately, occupational therapy. Like all of her pursuits, she followed this path doggedly. By age 30, she was an entrepreneur, a woman of science and a (selfdescribed) workaholic. She held an advanced master’s degree, was teaching at the university level, was the president of the Delaware Occupational Therapy Association and top of her field as a medical equipment consultant. When NABuxMont.com
asked about her distinguished professional trajectory, she beams: “I just didn’t want to be bored.” Suddenly, Austill-Clausen’s work-obsessed reality was turned inside out when her younger brother, David, died from the AIDS virus. Remarkably, not long after his passing, David began communicating with her from beyond the grave. It was Austill-Clausen’s first communication with the afterlife, setting in motion a monumental, year-long transformation of consciousness. She delineates this spiritual blossoming in her memoir Change Maker: How My Brother’s Death Woke Up My Life. Written in refreshingly relatable prose, Austill-Clausen gives readers a monthto-month account of her metamorphosis from Type “Triple A” workaholic to spiritual empath. Austill-Clausen insists she is not unique: “If I could do it, anyone can. I had no psychic or spiritual experience. I believe we all have the ability to access the spiritual realm if and when we acknowledge that it’s possible.” Her life now is a practice of integrating her two selves; having added master reiki practitioner to her list of accomplishments, Austill-Clausen has championed the idea that reiki can be used as a preparatory method to help clients focus, relieve stress
and decrease pain, enabling participation in occupationbased treatment sessions. She offers reiki courses for occupational therapists and laypeople alike, promoting its benefits as a gentle and safe healing modality that facilitates relaxation, reduces pain and activates the body’s natural healing energies. It should come as no surprise that AustillClausen was the first to teach a reiki and OT Level I certificate program at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference, which she has done since 2015. Austill-Clausen is on the road a lot these days, presenting to crowded rooms at conferences, hospice programs, universities and centers of spiritual convergence everywhere. But whether she is signing books, dialoguing about the metaphysical or teaching integrative healing, her disposition reads luminous, graceful and joyous. “This is FUN!” is one of her most popular expressions, and one can’t help but agree. Change Maker is available online at Austill-Clausen’s website, on Amazon.com in e-book or print and in bookstores nationwide.

“
’ve run in cities, rural areas and suburbs. I’ve run while deployed to military bases in the Middle East, in cities on four continents, in blazing heat and winter snowstorms,” says Maria Cicio, a licensed professional counselor candidate and marathoner in Grove, Oklahoma. “I’ve been running regularly for 25 years, mostly injury-free, and have found what works best for me.” For beginners, Cicio recommends starting with a 5K race. “There are a hundred reasons why a full marathon would not be fun for a beginner, but trail running, charity races and 5K road races are perfect,” she says. Cicio attests the physical health benefits come from the training and preparation more than from the race itself. “You can run for many years before deciding to run an official race, in which case you’ll probably have already experienced increased cardiovascular health, improved muscle tone and strength. “Running your first race can focus your running and turn it into training. You might increase your daily or weekly mileage, depending on the planned length of the race, or add some speed work to your regular running routine. When I’m training for a race, I’m more in tune with what my body needs; I also sleep better,” she says. The mental benefits are what keep many people running, even after the physical ones seem to plateau, advises Cicio. “Running means regular exercise, so it can improve our general mood. While numerous studies show this to be true, the best evidence comes from runners themselves.” Almost everyone has heard of a runner’s high, even if we haven’t experienced it ourselves. It’s long been accepted that endorphins released during exercise create a feeling of euphoria after a satisfying workout. Recent research on mice

by the Central Institute of Mental Health at the University of Heidelberg Medical School, in Germany, suggests that it might be natural endocannabinoids that lighten our mood and contribute to the high. Meditation master Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, in Halifax, Canada, teaches an online course, The Art of Mindful Running. He points out that running, or doing any physical activity, in a meditative state can deepen, train and enhance the mind. “Within 20 to 30 minutes, you have an opportunity to work with your mind. Instead of just spacing out or trying to get exercise, you can actually say, ‘I am going to be present, I am going to relate to my breathing and my movement a little bit,’” says Mipham. “This is healthy both for the mind and the body.” Those looking for an alternative to running on concrete and asphalt find that trail running ups the fun factor while nature nurtures us. “While I’d always loved running races, the roads rarely changed. Even the same trail tends to change daily, with a new puddle or a log to jump or crawl over, or a new offshoot. The natural running landscape is full of surprises,” says Nikki Partridge, an avid trail runner, American College of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer and Stott Pilates instructor in Auburn, California. “Trail running healed me,” says Partridge. “I always had some injury from running: tendonitis, sprained ankles, runner’s knee, pulled hamstrings, illiotibial band syndrome, shin splints or plantar fasciitis. I became a walking encyclopedia on injury and recovery. But the trails saved me. I no longer pronated when I ran, I had no more tendonitis from running on canting sidewalks—even my knee pain disappeared—my balance improved and my body was happy.”
When winding down after a race, carve out ample time for recovery and reflection. “I always ask myself what I liked about how it was organized, course conditions, support staff and the after-party, and then look for another race that fits my preferences,” says Cicio. “Consider taking a vacation around a particular race that interests you or find a local road race the next time you travel. For a modest fee, you get to run a race and typically luck into a T-shirt, food and party camaraderie.” The running world can open our eyes to new places, good people and greater self-awareness, along with physical fitness. Spring is a good time to lace up our shoes and begin the expansive journey.
