letterfrompublisher The upcoming year marks a major passage for
me. My friends have started asking how I want to celebrate the big “4-0”. And while I concur with the saying “age is just a number,” I’m also aware that marking my years on Earth, in this body and mind, is a valuable tool in the process of self-discovery. For me and, I imagine, many women, aging becomes evident first in our changing physicality. Crow’s feet around my eyes have emerged recently. They show up when I smile, smirk and laugh, and linger indefinitely. My body is a little rounder and thicker than before. As a woman of a certain age, I wrestle with accepting my visage as it grows further away from media-perpetuated beauty standards, and how far I’m willing to go to meet those standards. I’m aware that what’s happening on the outside is a reflection of what’s happening inside. That means keeping a closer watch on any changes, particularly those that might indicate the hereditary condition for which I am predisposed. Emotionally and spiritually, the shifts have been positive. As my connection to inner wisdom and authenticity grows, I care less about what people think about me. Though I have a ways to go, I’m more likely to admit my mistakes and forgive others for theirs. It’s as if my ego has wised up, too, and has become more adept at knowing when not to sweat the small stuff. Taking the time to get to know ourselves at each phase of life is critical to aging with passion and purpose. We must ask ourselves, “What choices can I make now that will support feeling, looking and being the most exuberant, vital version of me?” But as we know, transitions aren’t easy. I’ve traded in high-intensity, calorieburning workouts for more meditative, stress-busting activities like hatha yoga and jogging… but only after I pulled out my back. Getting to sleep and waking up early is what suits my temperament and energy levels, despite how much I love staying up to watch SNL. And it ain’t easy turning down red velvet cupcakes, even though I feel my best when I’m living on spinach, bell peppers and quinoa. I’m beyond lucky to have access to a network of passionate and enlightened, integrative doctors and other healing and wellness professionals to help me through the process. With the support of the Natural Awakenings community, I have the confidence to envision a comprehensive, integrative and personalized health plan that meets my physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Each month I learn something—a new exercise trend, research findings on supplements, herbs and oils, a fresh perspective from an inspired, local teacher. In each of these practices and processes I find the knowledge and empowerment to create and maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit now and in the years to come. And for that, no matter my age, I am eternally grateful. Together we are “Making the Awakening” in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

his fall, Encore Experiences senior center, in Harleysville, is hosting its first Holistic and Healing Expo, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., October 8, at 312 Alumni Avenue, in Harleysville. Holistic health and wellness vendors are invited to register for a table at this new community event. The goal of the expo, says Site and Program Director Patty Roxberry, is to introduce holistic living and wellness avenues to area senior citizens, as well as to the community. Encore Experiences currently offers its members a wide variety of holistic health and wellness services, including tai chi, yoga, acupuncture and massage therapy, and is excited to open its doors to additional services designed to promote overall health and enrich the lives of participants of any age. “Our members enjoy it!” says Roxberry, commenting on the center’s wellness programs and classes. New Vitae Offers Expanded Residential Services for Brain Injury Recovery
ENJOY
C
utting-edge alternatives for those that have experienced brain injuries are now close to home at New Vitae Wellness and Recovery (NVWR). Its comprehensive treatment program, Action Recovery: Brain Injury Services, which includes an eight-bed unit housed in Limeport, has recently expanded to include the Jade House, a satellite apartment setting in Quakertown. This expansion meets the region’s need for additional services for individuals diagnosed with a brain injury. The Action Recovery program offers long-term Jade House and transitional living support for residents, as well as short-term living arrangements offered as a respite option for their caregivers. These services are designed to meet the needs of individuals, family members and allies affected by brain injuries throughout the recovery process. “With the expansion to the Jade House, Action Recovery residents are excited to have access to additional recovery options,” says Jennifer Searing, a cognitive therapist and art therapist at NVWR. “Over the past few weeks, residents have been learning to navigate the Quakertown community and are searching for vocational opportunities. Staff and residents plan to continue to raise awareness and end the stigma associated with acquired brain injuries.” Residential options also include two licensed personal care homes, Mount Trexler Manor and Quakertown House, where the safety and support of staff assistance is provided around the clock. Additional residential options in Quakertown include Pathways apartments, which offer independent living in a supervised and supported apartment setting. These staffed apartments provide adults and young adults with a shared living space for up to three housemates. Supported independent living apartments are the most independent living option and often act as the next step to securing independent living in the community. With more than 30 years of service, NVWR continues to recognize the unique preferences and needs of residents when it comes to achieving recovery goals.

Unlimited Realities
Spiritual Intensive
by Elizabeth Joyce A memoir of the life of a gifted “seer” and “healer.” How a woman transcends from pain and sorrow, as destiny taps her on the shoulder
Now Available Rather than just shrugging off her problems, she gazed upward, spiritually awakened, floated above her body, and gained great wisdom and knowledge. The book alerts people that they have the power for transcendence, personally. Through meditation, mystical union with God is possible to attain, for everyone. The powers that were previously considered only for the elite high yogis and the gifted can now be seen through reading the book, as a rite of passage. We all have the power to attain higher levels to help us solve the problems that everyday life can bring. [excerpt] ...Such were the lessons of truth that flowed from Grandmother’s wisdom, ceaselessly. Not as platitudes, but as practical expressions of the supreme wisdom that brings success, health, enduring happiness, and love of the Divine into all circumstances of life. She filled my mind with a universal harmony and taught me that I could meet any challenge to my wellbeing. Her motto was, just listen. Get quiet, open your heart and your ears, and listen. “The heart has its reasons, which Reason knows nothing of.” Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined exactly what Grammie was preparing me for. Transformation, improvement of my family history, how to conquer any struggle between a variety of forces, as well as to locate my past-life talents and put them to use in this lifetime. To teach others how to enhance the understanding of who we are and release all that has constrained us in the past, from walking in Divine Love. List Price: $21.95 Paperback: 338 pages Publisher: Visions of Reality (July 7, 2017) ISBN-10: 0997208309 ISBN-13: 978-0997208306 Category: Personal Transformation; Religion and Spirituality Order From: Amazon.com or www.new-visions.com

esearchers from several international universities have found that seniors that provide caregiving services live longer than those that do not. The scientists analyzed survival data and information collected from the Berlin Aging Study on 500 adults over the age of 69 from 1990 to 2009. They compared survival rates from the subjects that provided caregiving for children, grandchildren and friends to those that did not. Of the subjects analyzed, the half that took care of their grandchildren or children were still alive 10 years after their first interview in 1990. Caring for non-family members also produced positive results, with half of the subjects living for seven years after the initial interview. Conversely, 50 percent of those that did not participate in any caregiving had died just four years after their first interview. The researchers warn that caregiving must be done in moderation. Ralph Hertwig, director of the Center for Adaptive Rationality and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, in Berlin, explains, “A moderate level of caregiving involvement seems to have positive effects on health, but previous studies have shown that more intense involvement causes stress, which has a negative effect on physical and mental health.”
A
study from Nagasaki University, in Japan, has found that reducing salt in the diet can cut down on the number of trips to the bathroom during the night. Researchers followed 321 men and women with high-salt diets and sleep problems for 12 weeks. Of the subjects, 223 reduced their salt intake from 10.7 grams per day to 8 grams and the remaining 98 increased their salt intake from 9.6 grams per day to 11 grams. The nighttime urination frequency rate for the salt reduction group dropped from 2.3 times per night to 1.4 times, while the increased salt group’s rose from 2.3 to 2.7 times per night.
EARLY BIRDS EAT BETTER AND EXERCISE MORE
R
esearchers from Helsinki, Finland, analyzed data from 2,000 people to find out how sleeping patterns affected their food choices. They discovered individuals that wake up early make healthier food choices throughout the day and are more physically active. “Linking what and when people eat to their biological clock type provides a fresh perspective on why certain people are more likely to make unhealthy food decisions,” explains lead author Mirkka Maukonen, from the National Institute for Health and Welfare, in Helsinki.

Yoga Eases Eating Disorders
R
esearchers from Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island, have found that regular yoga practice can help reduce anxiety and depression in young women with eating disorders. The scientists followed 20 girls between the ages of 14 and 18 that were enrolled in an outpatient eating disorder clinic that comprised the larger control group. Those selected agreed to participate in a weekly yoga class and complete questionnaires after six and 12 weeks, assessing their anxiety, depression and mood. Of those that started the study, five attended all 12 yoga classes and six completed between seven and 11 classes. Researchers found decreases in anxiety, depression and negative thoughts among those that participated in the yoga classes, with no negative side effects. Another study from the University of Delaware, in Newark, supports these results. Half of the 38 residential eating disorder treatment program participants did one hour of yoga prior to dinner for five days and the other half did not. The yoga group showed significant reductions in pre-meal anxiety compared to the control group.

MEDITATION AND MUSIC AID MEMORY IN EARLY STAGES OF ALZHEIMER’S
A
new study from West Virginia University, in Morgantown, reveals that listening to music and practicing meditation may help improve memory function for those in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers asked 60 adults experiencing subjective cognitive decline (SCD), a common predictor of Alzheimer’s, to engage in kirtan kriya musical meditation or listen to other music for 12 minutes a day for three months, and then consider continuing for an additional three months. Scientists measured the memory and cognitive function of the 53 participants that completed the six-month study and found significant improvements in both measurements at the threemonth mark. At six months, the subjects in both groups had maintained or improved upon their initial results.

Milk Muddle
The Aurora Organic Dairy pastures and feedlots north of Greeley, Colorado, are home to more than 15,000 cows—more than 100 times the size of a typical organic herd. It is the main facility of the company that supplies milk to Walmart, Costco and other major retailers. They adhere to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic regulations, but critical weaknesses exist in the inspection system the government uses to ensure that food is organic; farmers are allowed to hire their own inspectors to certify them, and thus can fall short of reaching standards without detection. Organic dairies are required to allow the cows to graze daily throughout the growing season rather than be confined to barns and feedlots. Although the USDA National Organic Program allows for an extremely wide range of grazing practices that comply with the rule, Aurora was observed onsite and via satellite imagery by the Washington Post as having only a small percentage of the herd outdoors on any given day. The company disputes the data. U.S. organic dairy sales amounted to $6 billion last year; although it is more expensive to produce, the milk may command a premium price of 100 percent more than regular.

Finland, internationally renowned for innovative educational practices, is poised to become the first country to eliminate school subjects. Officials are making changes to be implemented by 2020 that will revolutionize how the school system works by allowing pupils to absorb a body of knowledge about language, economics and communication skills. “We need something to fit for the 21st century,” says Department of Education head Marjo Kyllonen. The system will be introduced for seniors beginning at age 16. They will choose which topic or phenomenon they want to study, bearing in mind their ambitions and capabilities. “Instead of staying passively in their benches listening to the teachers, students will now often work in smaller groups collaborating on projects, rather than just assigned classwork and homework.” Another new model of learning sparked by XQ: The Super School Project (xqsuperschool.org) is underway at New Harmony High School, housed on a floating barge at the mouth of the Mississippi River southeast of New Orleans. They’ve received a $10 million grant to work on environmental issues when it opens in 2018. “High schools today are not preparing students for the demands of today’s world,” says XQ Senior School Strategist Monica Martinez; she notes that about a third of college students must take remedial courses and are not prepared to thrive as employees. 14

Plutonium Problem Glass or Cement May Encase Nuclear Waste
Congress might consider authorizing the U.S. Department of Energy to encase much of the nuclear waste at the Washington state Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the nation’s largest waste repository, in a cement-like mixture, according to a new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office. It states that when burying the waste, cement would be less expensive and faster than vitrification, an alternative process currently used to turn the waste into glass logs. A $17 billion vitrification plant, one of the federal government’s most expensive construction projects, is intended to separate much of the waste into high- and low-level radioactive material, but construction has stalled over design and safety concerns. After the highly radioactive waste is immobilized in the glass logs, it would theoretically be shipped to an as-yet-nonexistent national repository proposed for Yucca Mountain, in Nevada. The 56 million gallons of waste in question is left over from plutonium production for nuclear weapons since World War II, and the site itself has a history of leaks. The Department of Energy likes the cement burial, but state officials believe the best way to safely deal with the waste and protect the environment is by turning it into glass. Aging with Passion and Purpose Finding Fulfillment, Creativity and Meaning by Deborah Shouse
W
ant to age well? The answer isn’t in your 401k. Self-acceptance, a positive attitude, creative expression, purposeful living and spiritual connections all anchor successful and meaningful aging. In fact, these kinds of preparations are just as important as saving money for retirement, according to Ron Pevny, director of the Center for Conscious Eldering, in Durango, Colorado, and author of Conscious Living, Conscious Aging.
Savor Self-Acceptance
While most people believe adulthood is the final stage of life, Dr. Bill Thomas is among the creative aging experts that identify another life chapter: elderhood. “Elders possess novel ways of approaching time, money, faith and relationships,” says Thomas, an Ithaca, New York geriatrician and fierce advocate for the value of aging. “The best chapters may be near the end of the book,” Thomas continues. “Once you appreciate yourself and your years, you can relinquish outdated expectations and seek to discover your true self. Then the world can open up to you,” says Thomas. “Living a rewarding life means we are willing to say, ‘These chapters now are the most interesting.’” During this time, rather than feeling consumed by what we have to do, we can focus on what we want to do. 16

Fill the Funnel of Friends
For older people, relationships offer foundational connections; but as we age, friends may drift away, relocate or die. “Successful aging requires refilling our funnel of friends,” says Thomas, who considers socially engaged elders with friends wealthier than a socially isolated millionaire. “Notice opportunities for interacting and connecting,” advises Shae Hadden, co-founder of The Eldering Institute in Vancouver, Canada. Talk with the checkout person at the grocery store or smile at a stranger walking her dog.
Cultivate a Positive Attitude
Our beliefs about aging shape our experiences. A Yale University study found that older individuals with more positive self-perceptions of aging lived 7.5 years longer than those less so inclined. Connecting with positive role models helps us release limiting beliefs and embrace an attitude of gratitude instead. Other life lessons can be gleaned from observing how negativity affects people physically, emotionally, and socially. Holding onto regrets traps us in the past zapping energy and self-worth; it also keeps the best in us from shining out says Pevny. He suggests a simple letting-go ceremony, with friends as witnesses. If possible, hold it in a natural outdoor setting.
EdBockStock/Shutterstock.com
At one of his conscious aging retreats, Pevny created a fire circle. Mike, 70, had been a dedicated long-distance runner for most of his life. Now plagued with mobility issues, Mike decided to let go of regrets. He brought a pair of running shorts into the circle and talked about what the sport had meant to him—its joys, challenges and camaraderie. Then he tossed the shorts into the fire, telling his friends, “I am letting go so I can find a new purpose and passion.”
Understand Our Life Stories
Creating our own life review helps us acknowledge and understand our most significant experiences and reminds us of all we’re bringing to our elder journey. Pevny offers these approaches: n Develop a timeline, dividing life into seven-year sections. For each, write about the strongest memories and most influential people. n Consider what matters most, from people and values to challenges and dreams. n Write to children and grandchildren, sharing tales of our life’s most significant events and lessons. n Record key stories on audio or video.
Explore the Arts
The changes that aging brings can mire elders in depression and isolation. “Older people need to be brave and resilient,” says Susan Perlstein, of Brooklyn, New York, founder emeritus of the National Center for Creative Aging, in Washington, D.C., and founder of Elders Share the Arts, in New York City. “To age creatively, we need a flow of varied experiences, exploring new activities or reframing longtime interests from a fresh perspective.” Expressive arts can engage people’s minds, bodies and spirits. A George Washington University study shows that people engaged in the arts are happier and healthier. Perlstein understands this firsthand, having begun taking guitar lessons in her 70s. Motivated to play simple songs for her new granddaughter, she subsequently learned to play jazz and blues tunes and joined a band. “I’m doing something I love,” says Perlstein. “I’m meeting diverse people, learning new things and enjoying a rich life.”
The answers can lead to fresh settings, including local community centers and places of worship. Many universities have extension classes for lifelong learners. State arts councils support programs, and museums and libraries host helpful activities. Shepherd Centers encourage community learning and Road Scholar caters to elders that prefer to travel and study.
Discover a Purpose Older people are our Upon retirement some people feel greatest resource. We need purposeless and lost. They yearn for to nurture them and give something that offers up excitement, energy and joy. Hadden invites people them a chance to share to be curious and explore options. “We’re designing our future around what they know. ~Susan Perlstein, founder, National Center for Creative Aging and Elders Share the Arts Musician John Blegen, of Kansas City, Missouri, was 73 when he realized his lifelong secret desire to tap dance. When Blegen met the then 87-year-old Billie Mahoney, Kansas City’s “Queen of Tap,” he blurted out his wish and fear of being “too old.” She just laughed and urged him to sign up for her adult beginner class. He asked for tap shoes for Christmas and happily shuffle-stepped his way through three class sessions. “Tap class inspired me, encouraged me and gave me hope,” he says. “Now I can shim sham and soft shoe. It’s a dream come true.” To unearth the inner artist, ask: n Which senses do I most like to engage? n Do I enjoy looking at art or listening to music? Do I like sharing feelings and experiences? If so, a thrill may come from writing stories or plays, acting or storytelling. n As a child, what did I yearn to do; maybe play the piano, paint or engineer a train set? Now is the time to turn those dreams into reality. n How can I reframe my life in a positive way when I can no longer do activities I love? If dancing was my focus before, how do I rechannel that energy and passion? If puttering in the garden is too strenuous, what other outdoor interests can I pursue?
who we are and what we care about now,” she says. Try keeping a journal for several weeks. Jot down issues and ideas that intrigue, aggravate and haunt. After several weeks, reflect on the links between concerns that compel and those that irritate. Perhaps we’re intrigued by a certain group of people or a compelling issue. “A concern points to problems and people you want to help,” Hadden observes. This can range from lending a hand to struggling family members, maintaining our own health, volunteering for a literacy project or working to reduce world hunger. “Choose what inspires you to get out of bed each day, eager to move into action.”
Develop Inner Frontiers
People in their elder years may still be measured by midlife standards, which include physical power, productivity and achievement. “They come up short in the eyes of younger people,” dharma practitioner Kathleen Dowling Singh remarks. “But those standards do not define a human life.” Rather, aging allows us to disengage from the pressures of appearances and accomplishments. As we release judgments and unwanted habits, we can increase our feelings of spirituality and peace. “When doors in the outer world seem to be closing, it’s time to cultivate inner resources that offer us joy and meaning. We have the beautiful privilege of slowing down and hearing what our heart is saying,” says Singh, of Sarasota, Florida.

Acknowledge Our Shelf Life
“We cannot speak about aging and awakening without speaking about death and dying,” Singh believes. “We need to confront our mortality.” Meditating on the coming transition opens us up to the blessings of life. We can ask ourselves deep questions such as, “What am I doing? What do I want? What does this all mean? What is spirit?” Singh believes such searching questions are vital. None of us knows how much Earth time we have to awaken to a deeper, fuller experience of the sacred.
Help the World In today’s world of chaos and crisis, the wisdom of elders is more important than ever. “Older people need to be engaged, using their insights to help the Earth, community and world,” Pevny says. Creative aging is about improving the future for subsequent generations. In 2008, longtime educator Nora Ellen Richard, 70, of Overland Park, Kansas, wanted to be of greater service. She

Meditation is one way to deepen spiritually as we age. “Sit in solitude, gather your scattered thoughts and set an intention,” Singh suggests. “A daily practice shows what peace, silence and contentment feel like. As you become more comfortable, add time until you’re sitting for 20 to 40 minutes.”
Aging Gracefully from the Inside Out
BREATHING: A lifetime of poor breathing habits (often exacerbated by environmental toxins and poor nutrition) can lead to sleep apnea, which causes repeated awakenings at night. This interrupted sleep pattern prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen and detoxifying at night. A doctor or dentist that specializes in sleep issues or a sleep center can help.
by Lisa Feiner
A
ging gracefully often means staying as young-looking as possible. Annual doctor visits check the blood, heart, reflexes and medications. Yet, attention is rarely given to our brains unless we experience memory problems. It should go without saying that aging gracefully does not include developing dementia. Statistics show there is good reason to focus on brain health. The World Health Organization estimates the number of people living with dementia worldwide to be 47 million and projects that number to almost triple by 2050. By age 65, Americans have a 12 percent chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a specific type of dementia, and by age 85, that number increases to almost 50 percent. The good news is that dementia is not a natural part of aging—it often has specific causes that can be addressed, treated and reversed, sometimes completely. The brain, like all organs, can be monitored and checked over the course of our lives. A variety of diagnostics, from eye exams to inflammation markers in the blood, can be used to identify an underlying issue years before signs of memory loss become apparent. Dementia often has roots that can be traced back decades earlier—in some cases, to childhood. Because many dementia contributors are known (see SharpAgain.org), lifestyle changes can be mindfully addressed and implemented. Below are just a few examples of changes that can reduce dementia risk.
are practically identical to Alzheimer’s disease. Silver mercury fillings can be safely removed only by a specially trained dentist.
NUTRITION: Making changes to diet and increasing exercise can turn back the clock and restore the body, as well as the mind. Studies show that a Mediterranean diet, comprised of lean meats and fish, healthy fats such as nuts and olive oils, fresh fruits and vegetables, and little (if any) processed foods, help keep the brain functioning well into old age. MERCURY: Many cavities have “silver” fillings made of 50 percent mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Large fish like tuna and swordfish also contain mercury. Toxins get stored in our tissues, build up and ultimately cross the blood-brain barrier. Symptoms of mercury toxicity
Environmental toxins, lifestyle choices, technology and stress (among others) affect our health in ways never before imagined. Aging gracefully with our bodies and minds intact means understanding that health happens from the inside out, and over the course of a lifetime. Even people with a family predisposition to dementia can prevent or delay the onset of symptoms. Remember, graceful aging is not only a gift to ourselves, it’s a gift to our loved ones. Reiki at End of Life Healer Natalie Bliss Shares Her Experience
What is your name and where do you live? Natalie Bliss, Philadelphia.
How long have you been volunteering for Ascend Hospice? Five years.
How often do you volunteer?
As often as once a week, depending on the needs and location of the client.
Why did you decide to enroll in this program?
As a Reiki Master Teacher, I feel it is important to respond to people’s need for healing. Since the concept of “hospice” in general carries a stigma in society, I felt that the need was probably greater among the hospice population than anywhere else I could volunteer.
How has the experience been in line with or different from what you expected? When I first signed up, I expected less resistance to reiki among hospice clients and families. It was an awakening
to learn that there is still a long way to go in educating people entering hospice and their families, and especially their professional on-site caretakers, about the blessing that a reiki session can be for someone that is in the sometimes drawn-out process of dying. I have been extremely impressed and grateful for the support of the Ascend staff and how hard our volunteer coordinator, Marina McGough, works to introduce reiki in accessible ways to clients and their families. Any kind of energy healing can be difficult to explain to people facing end-of-life issues, and the team at Ascend does a great job of working with traditionally trained medical personnel, as well as the clients and families, to explain the benefits of reiki, aromatherapy, hand massage and other volunteer-provided support. The Ascend team makes commendable, coordinated efforts to make it available to everyone in their care. I also did not expect the excellent level of ongoing training that Ascend requires, but also provides for volunteers at no charge, and the many ways

they endeavor to show appreciation for volunteers’ services.
What have you learned from this experience?
I have learned that friendships with those that are dying can be formed and treasured in spite of their intrinsic impermanence.
What would you say to people that are considering volunteering but are hesitant?
Go ahead and apply. Take the volunteer training at Ascend and have a dialogue about your concerns with the Ascend staff. If in your heart you want to serve others, your selfless intention will find the right path to do so. There are so many ways to volunteer with Ascend, and every volunteer, even behindthe-scenes, is making a difference in someone’s life.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know?
The end of life is more peaceful when it is not approached with fear. Hospice staff and volunteers provide comfort, companionship and positive interactions that can ease the stress and loneliness of transition.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about working with people that are in hospice? When I tell friends and associates that I am a hospice volunteer, they often raise eyebrows and comment on how “brave” I must be. I reply that it’s not bravery to enjoy being in the company of those that truly appreciate my efforts to infuse their day with a little peace, comfort and joy.

Finding the Silver Lining in Grey Divorce
A
ging with passion and purpose will often result in a re-evaluation of life, with a focus on making sure the future years are secure, healthy and, most importantly, happy. For an increasing number of older couples, this may mean a separation or divorce later in life. In fact, divorce among older couples, or “Grey Divorce”, has become much more common. Family Law attorney Jennifer J. Riley explains that Grey Divorces require special attention and care because unique issues are often present. “The most common questions we answer for older clients involve the impact of a divorce on their retirement savings, or how divorce might impact their social security payments,” says Riley. “In a Grey Divorce, we need to safeguard health insurance and address long-term planning as part of the divorce process.” Couples that are approaching retirement are often especially worried about the future, Riley says, adding, “It is important to address pensions, retirement savings plans and other savings as part of the process to ensure that divorced couples begin their new lives with a strong foundation.” Couples divorcing later that have built a life together often tell Riley that they want to honor the other partner, despite needing to forge a new path. “We need to recognize the history of the family and proceed with the respect and dignity Grey Divorces deserve,” she says. “Couples who have spent decades building a life and family together deserve this.” Law Offices of Jennifer J. Riley are located at 585 Skippack Pk., Ste. 200, Blue Bell and 900 West Valley Rd., Ste. 703, Wayne. For more information, call 215-283-5080 or visit JJRLawFirm.com. See ad, page 10.

Healthy Aging with Hillery Woods
I
n 2010, licensed massage therapist Hillery Woods founded Roots & Wings Therapeutic Bodywork, in Quakertown, to provide customized, restorative and preventative therapies informed by the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, ayurveda, Breema bodywork and permaculture. Her clients include elderly adults as well as those recovering from injury or living with chronic illness.
What does healthy aging look like?
In my massage practice and yoga classes, I am constantly inspired by my elderly clients who show me living examples of healthy aging. The ones who are receiving regular bodywork sessions, staying active and laughing seem to be living a meaningful life.
How do relationships impact meaningful living as we age? The idea of meaningful living being rooted in relationships starts with the relationship we have with ourselves. According to the science of ayurveda, each person needs to pay attention to their inner dialogue. Our thoughts, feelings and emotions have a direct effect on our overall health. This is the primary relationship to nurture.
What informs your approach to healthy aging?
My work is informed by the wisdom of ancient healing arts like ayurveda and jin shin jyutsu. Both of these are based in science and applied as a healing art.
What causes physical imbalances as we age?
Elements inform everything in nature and can magnify imbalances according to age, season and time of day. As we get older, the elements of air and ether are very active. That may translate into joint inflammation, digestive problems and neurological disorders.
What methods do you recommend to treat emotional imbalances?
Jin shin jyutsu is based on harmonizing emotions. In fact, all of your fingers represent different emotions and simply holding each finger separately can be a way to help harmonize yourself. Receiving an hour-long session twice a month is a great prescription for wellness.
What kinds of results do clients experience at Roots & Wings?
I work with a couple who are in their 80s. They both have been receiving regular bi-monthly jin shin jyutsu sessions for 25 years. They hardly take any prescriptions and are living joyfully. I see, through the experience of my clients, that maintaining health with jin shin jyutsu has minimized their chronic health conditions.
What advice to do you have for those seeking answers to healthy aging?
In this great unraveling of our healthcare institutions, preventive and restorative medicine is showing us long-term benefits. Healthy aging is only limited by our imagination and desire to create a world where we don’t hide from the changes of life. Meaningful living starts with the habits we create now and growing our relationship with ourselves first. Location: 127 S. 5th St., Ste. 150, Quakertown. Your Bridge to Natural Health
What methods do you recommend to treat physical imbalances?
Chair yoga is so great for balancing elemental excess. The chair gives us a sense of grounding to the Earth for stability and safety. Using visualization and guided imagery connects us to our imagination and our body awareness. Movements in the chair focus on increasing joint circulation and handeye coordination.

enowned yogi and international teacher Rodney Yee, of New York City, has maintained an inspired yoga practice for 37 years while juggling career obligations, fame and family life. While the benefits of yoga are increasingly well known—from stress reduction and pain management to a more limber body and inner peace—Lee is also aware of the challenges to maintaining a consistent practice. Here he shares insights on the pitfalls encountered by both beginning and advanced students. “My advice is to first get rid of self-berating behavior, including judgmental inner dialogue. In many aspects of life, we are constantly measuring ourselves against a standard, which is a waste of time and energy,” says Yee. With a professional background in classical dance and gymnastics, Yee decided to give yoga a try at a nearby studio when he craved more physical flexibility. “As many people do, I came to yoga for a reason. I was a dancer with tight joints. After the first class, I couldn’t believe how I felt. It was not at all like an athletic high; I had a sense of well-being and knew what it means to feel peaceful and clear.” For people with jam-packed lives, finding time for exercise can be daunting. Yee suggests a relaxed approach to scheduling yoga into a busy day. “As the rishis [Hindu sages] say, we shouldn’t ‘try’ to meditate, not try to force a natural state. To say, ‘I have to do yoga,’ just puts another thing on our to-do list. Sometimes discipline is needed, but another part of discipline is not about force.”
You can blink and half your life is gone. You can’t always be busy, busy, busy; you have to decide how to fill your life.
Fall 2017
Different approaches to yoga abound, and part of staying motivated may include exploration of a variety of traditions as individual needs change due to lifestyle, health, interests or simple curiosity. Yee reminds us to go with the flow and follow how we feel in the moment. “Different schools of yoga exist because each offers something different. There is a form for all of our moods and a practice for how you feel at any given time.” Reflecting on how his own practice has evolved through the years, Yee recollects, “In my 20s and 30s, my yoga practice was arduous, including three to four hours of strong, physical work and a half hour of pranayama [breath work]. Then for 20 years, it involved a lot of teaching. Over the past 17 years, my practice has become more subtle, with a focus on sequencing and meditation; it’s about how to do this all day long in the context of my body and my life; about being both centered and in the world. In some way, we’re always doing yoga, as we already take 20,000 breaths a day. From a philosophical and ethical point of view, yogis have no choice but to practice.” Because many American women have found their way to a yogic path, men often assume it’s primarily a women’s niche. But yoga has been a male practice for nearly 2,500 years in other countries. Yee encourages men to not feel intimidated. “Why not try something that can help you improve your business, family life and even your golf game?” he queries. While Yee believes in a no-pressure approach, he also suggests inviting ways to foster consistency. “If you are just beginning, set aside a half-hour before going to bed or get up a half-hour earlier. Also note that pain is less to be avoided than learned from.” Wisdom can come from dedication to a yoga practice. Yee’s philosophy is, “You can blink and half your life is gone. You can’t always be busy, busy, busy; you have to decide how to fill your life. As spiritual teacher Ram Dass counsels, ‘Be here now.’ Train yourself to bring body, mind and heart together and fully drink from that.” Learn more at YeeYoga.com. FABULOUS FAN FARE Healthy Tailgating Foods to Cheer For by Judith Fertig
E
at, play, party… and repeat. We may call it tailgating, fangating, homegating, a watch party or simply eating with friends before a big game. According to the American Tailgaters Association, in St. Paul, Minnesota, an estimated 50 million Americans tailgate annually. Whether we’re on the road or at home, making the menu healthy is a winning strategy for hosts and guests. Here, two experts divulge their winning ways. Says Debbie Moose, author of Fan Fare: A Playbook of Great Recipes for Tailgating or Watching the Game at Home,, Ivy League schools like Princeton and Yale claim credit for pregame picnics that 19th-century sports fans
packed into their horse and buggy for local road trips. Moose lives in the tailgate trifecta of the North Carolina triangle, home to Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest universities. She enjoyed discovering that University of Washington sports fans from the Seattle area like to sail to their chosen picnic spots, while University of Hawaii folks grill fish on hibachis in Honolulu. Moose naturally prefers healthy, Southern-style fare such as deviled eggs and marinated green bean salad, which can be served hot, cold or at room temperature. “At the game or at home, your guests will be moving around, so go for foods that can be eaten with one hand,” she suggests.

She also plans her menu around color, universal appeal and variety because it’s healthier than just serving a mound of barbecued chicken wings and a big bowl of potato chips. She likes recipes that can do double duty; her black bean summer salad with cherry tomatoes and corn can function as a colorful side dish or as a salsa for nonGMO blue corn chips. “Recipes that you can do ahead of time make things easier on game day; just pull them from the fridge and go,” says Moose. Daina Falk, of New York City, grew up around professional athletes because her father, David Falk, is a well-known sports agent. Excitement-generating sports are in her blood and inspired her to write The Hungry Fan’s Game Day Cookbook. She knows that most of the tailgating in her area takes place for football and baseball games and NASCAR races. On HungryFan.com, Falk serves up tips for every fangating/homegating occasion, from the Kentucky Derby to the Super Bowl. “Keep your menu interesting,” says Falk. “I always like to feature a dish for each team. For instance, if you’re hosting an Alabama versus Washington watch party, you could feature an Alabama barbecue dish with white sauce and oysters or other fresh seafood. Both dishes are characteristic of the local foods in the universities’ respective hometowns.” Falk recommends buying more local beer than needed to make sure not to run out. Game day guests can get hot and thirsty, indoors or out. Supply lots of filtered water in non-breakable containers. For easy entertaining, Falk recommends biodegradable dishes and cups. “Whenever there are a lot of people in one room, especially when they’re drinking, a glass will likely be broken,” she says. “Save yourself cleanup and the risk of glass shards by committing to temporary cups and plates that are Earth-friendly and compostable.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com). Natural Awakenings recommends using organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) and non-bromated ingredients whenever possible.

Pennsylvania Medical Cannabis Program by Tom Santanna
O
ver the last year, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has implemented the legislative Act 16 of 2016, allowing for a medical cannabis program, without any major delays. Regulations have been drafted and published, and the first round of licenses for growing, processing and distributing medical cannabis have been awarded. Seventeen qualifying conditions allow patients to receive medical cannabis therapy, including HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal or neurological indication of spasticity, inflammatory bowel, Huntington’s disease, Crohn’s disease, posttraumatic stress disorder, intractable seizures, glaucoma, autism, sickle cell anemia, neuropathy and pain, defined in the statute as “severe chronic or intractable pain of neuropathic origin or severe chronic or intractable pain in which conventional therapeutic intervention and opiate therapy is contraindicated or ineffective.”
Smoking or vaporizing of dried cannabis flowers, or buds, is not permitted as a legal means of consuming medical cannabis under the law, and dried flowers will not be sold at dispensaries. The forms allowed to consume medical cannabis in Pennsylvania as stated in Act 16 include oil, tincture, pill, topical gels, creams or ointments, and “a form medically appropriate for administration by vaporization or nebulization,” which means oil and extracts that could be used in a device such as a vape pen for consumption. There will be no cap on THC content, the principal psychoactive compound in cannabis, on any of the products. The law does not allow edibles such as cannabis-infused candies, cookies, etc. to be sold in dispensaries, and prohibits home growing of medical cannabis plants. Licenses for growing, processing and distributing will be awarded as soon as summer 2017 and the program could be fully functional by the first quarter of 2018.
We all have a hand in creating the community where we want to live.

Those that wish to consider cannabis therapy as a non-toxic, nonaddictive, holistic health option for pain or any of the other 16 qualifying conditions must talk to a physician that has completed the required four-hour certification course and is registered to recommend cannabis therapy to a patient. Patients interested in medical cannabis therapy are strongly encouraged to talk with their doctors now and ask them if they plan to get certified to recommend medical cannabis. If the doctor recommends a patient for cannabis therapy, the patient must register with the Pennsylvania Department of Health for a medical cannabis ID card and may then visit a licensed medical cannabis dispensary, where a pharmacist that is required to be on staff at all times will discuss which type of cannabis and method of consumption might be best for the patient’s symptoms; for example, pain. If a parent wants medical cannabis for their child that has one of the 17 qualifying conditions, they can register with the Department of Health for an ID as a caregiver. An adult patient can also designate another adult as a caregiver that will then register in a similar way as the parent or legal guardian. The department will make applications for caregivers available on its website. Information for physicians interested in learning more about medical cannabis and getting certified can be obtained from the only physician-run medical cannabis organization for doctors, Compassionate Certification Centers (CompassionateCertification Centers.com). Information for potential patients, caregivers and doctors will be continually updated on the Pennsylvania Department of Health website as the program develops (Health.PA.gov). Tom Santanna is the president of Tom Santanna Strategic Consulting, a Harrisburg-based government relations practice that specializes in medical cannabis. Santanna is also a RYT-200 yogi. How did you come to incorporate Cannabidiol (CBD) oil into your work with dogs?
I use a lot of natural products in my work, like essential oils. I started researching CBD because I treat a lot of geriatric dogs, and they have many of the same issues that older humans have—such as mobility loss, stress and anxiety. I tested the CBD oil on my 13-year-old dog with those same symptoms. I started giving him three drops in the evening, and he was less restless, happier, slept better and wanted to be around the family more. Although there is not a lot of research on the effects of CBD oil, people are reporting great changes. I now have several clients using it that are noting positive changes. I also know of seizure dogs that are taking it and have responded positively to it. Those that have tried it are seeing results. I also like using local products, so when I saw DaCrema Botanicals CBD products in a neighborhood health food store, I was excited to learn that something so high-quality was being produced close-by. Therapeutic Healing for the Soul Discussing Quantum EFT with Delia Nessim Who You Are Makes Us Who We Are Become an Ascend Hospice Volunteer Ascend Hospice is actively recruiting reiki practitioners, certified massage therapists and comfort volunteers to positively impact the lives of our patients. To sign up for volunteer training, or for more information on volunteer opportunities, please call 866.821.1212.
What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is a tapping technique that relaxes the nervous system and accesses the subconscious mind. It is similar to hypnosis except that with EFT the client’s conscious mind is also active and can provide input about patterns and fears.
How does Quantum EFT differ from standard EFT?
Have you ever wondered how it’s possible that a six-yearold can play the violin like a virtuoso? Or how a person can pick up a second language and be fluent with almost no exposure? Perhaps deeply rooted skills and talents are not completely erased from one lifetime to the next. Perhaps the things that invoke passion and emotion are more likely to stay embedded in a person’s soul. If this is the case, then it’s also possible for a person’s negative experiences to remain etched in the soul. Quantum EFT flows from standard EFT and is a way to clear trauma on a soul level. The practitioner leads the process by asking the client to tap on the meridian points while instructing the body to release the particular feelings and body sensations from all of the cells and the multi-dimensional layers of DNA. Many irrational fears and even physical conditions have been known to inexplicably disappear after experiencing Quantum EFT.

Unwind the Mind and Set the Heart Free by Julie Vitto Anne Jensen, Ph.D.
E
motional stress can be related to all kinds of symptoms, including physical pain, digestive disorders, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and falling short of one’s potential. It can make life feel like a series of repeated mistakes, where longstanding issues make change feel nearly impossible to achieve. These roadblocks to understanding the mind-body continuum can widen the chasm between the “real” self and the self that’s on display. Thankfully, Anne Jensen, Ph.D., developer of the new emotional heal-
ing and stress reduction tool known as HeartSpeak, has tapped into a solution for these issues and is excited to share results with the world. Jensen’s groundbreaking research at the University of Oxford shows that the non-invasive technique known as muscle response testing has the ability to help reveal what stresses the body and triggers the mind. Thus, finding the truth of an individual’s mind-body experience is well within reach. During a HeartSpeak session, an experienced HeartSpeak practitioner
will gently and safely guide the patient through unresolved feelings that trigger physical pains or undesired responses, all without the patient having to describe, explain or rationalize them. “Those skeletons in your closet remain strictly confidential. And best of all, you will feel untethered and finally free,” says Jensen. HeartSpeak is a fast and friendly modality—it typically takes just one or two sessions to experience results, since it listens to and works with the heart and your feelings, rather than against them.

Jensen describes the modality as “fearbusting”, helping to break old, fearful, futile patterns so that healthier, more expansive ones can quickly emerge. “HeartSpeak uses the premise that there are two parts to the mind: the Logical Mind and the Feeling Mind,” Jensen explains. “Our Feeling Mind is often the seeker of ‘truth’ that is so often drowned by our Logical Mind. Yet being separated from your truth is one of the classic triggers of anxiety, depression and self-loathing.” Jensen offers HeartSpeak courses and seminars online and around the world. This month, she will teach two courses at Montgomery Integrative Health Group, in Wyndmoor, introducing clients and practitioners alike to Muscle Response Testing, September 22, and HeartSpeak Level 1, September 23. No prior experience is necessary to attend. “HeartSpeak teaches us to feel our way through the unresolved, emotional energies in a method that is taken at your own pace,” says Jensen. “You will do the feeling and you will determine the pace and depth of your body’s response.” HeartSpeak allows anyone to access deep healing simply and effectively by changing the neuroplasticity of traumas and habits and how they affect individuals on a daily basis. “With the very specific use of Muscle Response Testing we can learn this evolutionary application of HeartSpeak to bypass the stories, concepts and constructs created in the Logical Mind, and uncover the truth of the Feeling Mind.” Jensen is a clinical researcher and a published author who holds a D.Phil. (Ph.D.) in evidence-based health care from the University of Oxford, in England. Her research is some of the first to demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of muscle response testing in determining underlying issues of the mind-body complex. In her private practice, she consults with clients from around the world. For more information, call 323-744-7374, email Admin@HeartSpeak.com or visit HeartSpeak.com. See ad, page 6. JourneyDance with Kelly Thomke
Q
uakertown’s Kelly Thomke is a certified JourneyDance facilitator, trained by its creator, Toni Bergins. The dance form is a departure from kinetic or yogic dance and seeks to cleanse and heal the mind, body, soul and spirit through freestyle movement. Set to inspiring world music, JourneyDance participants move barefoot and with eyes closed as they let go and become transformed.
and work through whatever they might be going through.
The theme of this issue is Graceful Aging. How does age factor into a person’s experience of body movement and dancing?
You have been facilitating JourneyDance for several years. How does it feel different now compared to when saved you started? Now, it’s a richer my husband’s and life; juicier he has dance, and it’s always been in good health underfulfilling. Dr. MeshAlso, it’s not as scary as it used ’s caretoforbe.20It’syears now still so wonderful for me to see others open up during the dance
We have to get over people telling us how we should look and behave. Sometimes that means peeling off those layers until you find the real you. The movement allows you to do that. My intention is to create a safe container for people. I like to call it a moving meditation. It’s cathartic, therapeutic and meditative; it’s all the good stuff!
How is JourneyDance different from other kinds of dance? It’s not like a waltz or a fox trot; it’s your own dance and you don’t need a partner or to
know any particular steps. People come because they want to get in shape and exercise. What happens on the dance floor is that you start to move and then release the emotion. It’s very therapeutic.
How can people try JourneyDance?
I have two new class offerings on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings at AirMid Wellness and Counseling Center, in Warminster. I also am going to start facilitating a dance on First Fridays at Anahata Yoga, in Harleysville. For more information, call 215-5344989 or visit Facebook.com/Journey DanceWithKelly, EarthRhythmSacred Dance.com and JourneyDance.com. See listing, page 47.

Crystal Bed Therapy in inspiration Light of John of God Visit
E
Efetova Anna/Shutterstock.com
laine Berk offers Crystal Light Therapy from John of God at her Newtown practice, Evolving Soul, LLC. From October 3 through 5, John of God will visit the Omega Institute, in Rhinebeck, New York.
Who is John of God, and why is this such an anticipated event?
John of God is a medium often referred to as the “Brazilian Healer”, though, he is the first to admit it is “God that heals, not me.” I am quite fortunate to have visited both The Casa de Dom Inácio, in Brazil, where I am a Casa Guide, and Omega Institute to see John of God. For me, the high vibration energy, the peace, the love, the healing and hopefulness—even among those with dramatic/traumatic health issues—has always been palpable. He has helped to heal and provide guidance to millions around the world for 66 years. Elaine Berk
What can you tell us about the bed that bears his name?
BEING BEAUTY What Makes Us Glow by Glennon Doyle Melton
P
When one of these energy centers becomes blocked, it can wreak havoc on our physical and emotional state, causing pain, illness, frustration, negativity, stress and depression. The Crystal Bed opens one’s chakras and gets them spinning in the correct direction, fostering health and creating a sustainable, harmonious flow of energy. Sessions include 30 to 60 minutes on the Crystal Bed, combined with other elements you would experience at the Casa in Brazil with John of God. For those unable to visit John of God in New York or Brazil, the Crystal Bed is a way to experience that energy and healing locally, right here in Bucks County.
lenty of people are pretty, but haven’t yet learned how to be beautiful. They have the right look for the times, but they don’t glow. Beautiful women glow. That’s because beautiful is not about how we look on the outside; it is about what we’re made of and being “full of beauty” on the inside. Beautiful people spend time discovering what their idea of beauty is on this Earth. They know themselves well enough to know what they love, and they love themselves enough to fill up with a little of their particular kind of beauty each day. When we are with a beautiful woman, we might not notice her hair, skin, body or clothes, because we’ll be distracted by the way she makes us feel. She is so full of beauty that some of it overflows onto us. We feel warm and safe and curious around her. Her eyes typically twinkle a little and she’ll look at us closely—because a beautiful, wise woman knows that the quickest way to fill up with beauty is to soak in another’s beauty. The most beautiful women take their time with other people; they are filling up. Women concerned with being pretty think about what they look like, but women concerned with being beautiful think about what they are looking at, taking in the loveliness around them. They are absorbing the whole beautiful world and making all that beauty theirs to give to others.
Location: 110 N. State St., Newtown. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 215-970-1534 or visit PastLifeRegressionPa.com. See ad, page 29.

The Crystal Bed was conceived by John of God as a means of healing and is used extensively at The Casa in Brazil, where he does his work. The Crystal Bed clears and balances one’s chakras—the energy centers responsible for our vital life force.
