That the work is by no means over with the construction and commissioning of a cooling circuit, the responsible technician notices at the latest when he has to think about how he can operate his cooling circuit in the simplest, safest, most effective and, above all, cheapest way. Not only is some basic knowledge of mechanics, chemistry, physics and biology necessary, but also knowledge of measurement, control and regulation technology. However, since a thorough imparting of this knowledge would go far beyond the scope of this brochure and since most of the people in charge already have the basic knowledge, we have deliberately refrained from doing so. Instead, this brochure is intended to provide food for thought on how Sanosil disinfectants (combined with hardness stabilisers and corrosion protection) can ensure the most effective and costeffective operation of a cooling circuit.
Main tasks of cooling water treatment In addition to the treatment of the raw water, e.g. by filtration, cooling water treatment consists of three sub-aspects that always influence each other (regardless of the products used). If changes are made to one subsection, the effects on the other two must be closely observed and corrected if necessary. Treatment
Product type
Underdosing
Overdose
Corrosion protection
Corrosion inhibitors
- Corrosion / pitting - Material damage
- Decrease in the K-value or reduction in efficiency
Deposit reduction
- Hardness stabilisation agent - pH correction - Dispersant
- Decrease of the K-value or Reduction of the efficiency, - Increased biofilm build-up due to rough surfaces. surfaces. - Natural corrosion protection through Deposits
- increased risk of corrosion. - Optimisation of the K-value or increase in efficiency
Biocide
- Deposits due to slime, algae and biofilm - Blockages, pump failure, etc. - Reduction of the efficiency - Contamination of the environment by Germs (legionella, etc.)
(Depending on the biocide: ) - Corrosion - Environmental damage (waste water problem, formation of trihalometha ns (AOX) etc.)
Microbiology control (bacteria, algae)
Good cooling water treatment is achieved through a balanced relationship between the three aspects, whereby certain compromises must always be made. Knowledge of one's own plant (materials used, construction), the raw water quality and precisely defined operating guidelines (e.g. K-value min/max, number of germs in the water, thickening factor, etc.) form the basis of a treatment package that is individually tailored to one's own needs or the plant.

Microbiology control While the areas of corrosion protection and deposit reduction are relatively easy to measure and influence (corrosion protection and hardness stabilisation agents do not usually change during operation. The concentration in the water can be maintained proportional to the fresh water by simply adding them), the topic of microbiological control is much more complex. The biocides usually used on a large scale - chlorine and/or bromides - require extremely careful handling. As the concentration varies depending on the water quality, temperature, organic pollutant input, etc., it is important to use If the concentration can change dramatically, all factors must be closely monitored. Ideally, a readjustment must take place shortly before degradation occurs, thus compensating for fluctuations in concentration. If this does not succeed, biological growth sets in. Any overdosing, on the other hand, keeps the biological disruptive factors within bounds, but results in a massive increase in corrosiveness and (in the case of chlorine) in highly hazardous trihalomethanes or AOXs.
Biofim build-up in a smaller cooling circuit with insufficient disinfection . The pipes are completely clogged
Conclusion:
Ideally, therefore, a product must be used which: • is easy to dose, measure and regulate • causes as little corrosion as possible • reliably kills biofim or microorganisms • does not evoke environmental problems • reduced by long-term effect and stability Concentration fluctuations. • can easily compete economically with the classically used products
Sanosil disinfectant Product description Sanosil disinfection products are biocide concentrates based on hydrogen peroxide and silver for use in cooling water systems. The excellent effectiveness is achieved even with small dosing quantities and make Sanosil safe and reliable products for cooling water systems. They prevent germ accumulation, biofilm build-up and algae build-up in the pipes and surfaces of cooling systems and thus ensure perfect heat transfer Sanosil also forms neither AOX nor THM and is characterised by its good environmental compatibility.

Important properties of Sanosil disinfectants Sanosil disinfectant... -...are highly effective against Biofim even in very small doses. -...are much more stable in water compared to chlorine and bromine. This reduces fluctuations in concentration. -...reliably reduce re-germination (long-term effect due to the catalytically acting silver). -... in contrast to UV lamps, they can also be used in turbid water. -...do not cause any change in odour or taste of the treated water or air when dosed. -...do not cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory system in dosed condition. -...are environmentally friendly, the main ingredient hydrogen peroxide does not pollute the waste water, as only water and oxygen (H2O and O2), i.e. no polluting by-products, are produced during its decomposition. ...have a very good shelf life compared to other oxidising disinfectants such as chlorine.
Mode of action The main active ingredient is the environmentally friendly hydrogen peroxide, which has been stabilised in a complex process and its effect against microorganisms has been strengthened by the addition of silver. This achieves an antimicrobial effect that is several times better than that of normal hydrogen peroxide. The amounts of silver remaining on the surface effectively counteract new germs.

Application of Sanosil disinfection products Variant A: automatic, proportional disinfectant addition In this process, a quantity of approx. 5 - 30 ml/m3 (depending on the water quality) of Sanosil Super 25 /Sanosil C is continuously added to the fresh water of a cleaned(!) system via a dosing pump or a proportional mixing device.
The dosage depends on various factors such as water temperature, organic load, amount of fresh water, etc. The dosage is added via an injection valve in the fresh water supply line. Caution: Sanosil has a very strong effect against biofim. If a system is already overgrown with biofilm, the dosage should be done slowly and increased continuously. Otherwise the dead / detached biomasses will quickly clog all filters.
Variant B: manual discontinuous disinfectant addition To save the costs for a proportional dosing unit, the disinfectant can also be added manually or via a time-controlled dosing pump. The dosage for Sanosil C is approx. 100 ppm every 2-3 days. Our specialists will be happy to help you with questions about dosage, application, etc.
