Barry J. Maron Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center The Barry J. Maron Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at Kalra Hospital SRCNC Pvt. Ltd., unveiled on September 27, 2014 at the Le Meridien in New Delhi by Dr. Barry J. CRITICAL CARE WORKING GROUP The Critical Care Working Group at Kalra Hospital in New Delhi was convened with the understanding that the practice of critical care medicine is in its infancy across the world. The ability to shape the way critical care is delivered outside of developed nations is the primary focus of the working group. We understand that developing nations are limited by resources that exist for taking care of the critically ill. The reasons are multiple including the prohibitive cost, the lack of critical care training programs and inadequate infrastructure. We seek to improve access to multidisciplinary art of critical care medicine, improve the delivery of critical care medicine, and improve the overall care of the critically ill in the institutions we work in. Our goals will be met through educational conferences, and consulting with hospitals throughout New Delhi and India, as we develop the region’s next generation of critical care specialists.
BARRY J. MARON HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY CENTER The Barry J. Maron Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at Kalra Hospital SRCNC Pvt. Ltd., unveiled on September 27, 2014 at the Le Meridien in New Delhi by Dr. Barry J. Maron (of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation), is India’s first hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) “center of excellence.” The center’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art care to HCM patients in India, comparable to that provided to such patients in the West. As discussed by Drs. Barry Maron and Ankur Kalra in their European Heart Journal article, “at this time, expertise in HCM is underdeveloped and there are no established multidisciplinary centres in India specifically designed for the systematic assessment of patients with this disease.** The center at Kalra Hospital has been established in recognition of this deficit. The mission of the HCM center at Kalra will be to appropriately manage patients with this complex disease, offering advanced cardiovascular imaging (including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging), clinic cardiac electrophysiology for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, and screening and genetic testing for patients’ family members where necessary and indicated. The HCM center at Kalra, under Dr. Maron’s guidance, has worked in collaboration with Dr. Maron’s surgical team to identify and train select few cardiovascular surgeons in India in surgical septal myectomy, establish a nationwide referral system where patients with this complex disease can get evaluated by cardiovascular experts at Kalra dedicated to HCM, and also diligently follow these patients longitudinally on an annual basis, and establish a nationwide registry as part of this programme dedicated to HCM. 16
As Drs. Barry Maron and Ankur Kalra have written, HCM has not been a priority in India, and these patients have been underserved. Solutions are challenging and will take time, but can be best achieved by emphasizing HCM-related education and training, and also by developing multidisciplinary programmes dedicated to this disease. Dr. Ankur Kalra is a board-certified cardiologist in the United States, and currently a clinical and research fellow in the Division of Interventional Cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and a clinical fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. As “enhancing medical expertise in HCM requires commitment and willingness to invest in time and money, as well as development of an expanded and accessible medical insurance programme (with adequate reimbursement provisions),” Kalra Hospital invites philanthropic individuals, financial institutions, and organizations at large to donate generously toward this initiative, and collaborate with us for developing a state-ofthe-art HCM center and national registry of HCM patients.

WORLD HEART DAY Kalra Hospital & SRCNC in association with the World Heart Federation at Geneva, Switzerland organized the World Heart Day 2011 in its seventh consecutive year. The event was organized at Hotel Jaypee Siddharth, New Delhi. Dr. K. Srinath Reddy, former Professor & Head, Division of Cardiovascular Disease at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was awarded the 6th annual Coeur d’Or (Heart of Gold) award for his philanthropic work in cardiology. The event was also attended by Professor Ramesh C Deka, Director, AIIMS, New Delhi.
COEUR D’OR AWARD Coeur d’Or award recognizes a cardiologist of national or international prominence who has contributed significantly to the field of cardiovascular medicine. The award is presented to the recipient by an individual of national fame in India, or a celebrated national peer in cardiovascular medicine. The award committee picks one recipient each year, and the award is presented during a conference organized to celebrate World Heart Day in September in New Delhi, India. 18
