The Urban Pleasure Gardens: The Studios of Romantic Ballet
Academic: Year 3 Final Studio Project Tutors: Dr Constance Lau, Stephen Harty Location: The Natural History Museum, London UK
These studios host the practice and performance of scenes from Akram Khan’s modern reinterpretation of the romantic ballet Giselle. The core narrative draws heavily from the argument that the viewers’ and dancers’ experience of a modern ballet should be consistent with the choreographer’s vision of deconstruction and reinvention. The idea of movement as a pursuit of pleasure, from pedestrian activities to the ideal modern performance space, is challenged in this conception of romantic ballet. The journey starts with a sweeping transition from the gardens of the Natural History Museum, flowing into an intimate building with moving walls, floating studios and a suspended stage. The expression of romantic movement proceeds from the carefully careless layout to the theatrical sublime experiences. This is manifested chiefly in the design of adaptable spatial boundaries that strips away traditional ways of viewing a performance to enable everyone to become part of one. 1. The Narrative The Studios of Romantic Ballet host the practice and performance of Romantic Ballet. The building is based on fragments from Akram Khan’s ‘Giselle’. Looking into the elements of this reinvented Romantic Ballet introduces the spaces and functions of the building as well as hosting performances of scenes from this ballet. The Romantic Ballet movement showed more relation to telling tales of ‘real people’, opening up to society. This building is designed not to host a full-length performance but to provide audiences who may have not been able to afford tickets and dancers that did not make it into the final cut, an opportunity to experience parts of this performance that may be different but equal to its beauty and pleasure.

Site Plan Transcript 7
Following theory behind Bernard Tschumi’s ‘Manhattan Transcripts’ of exploring movement, events and space, a form of analysis is applied on site exploring how people move on the grounds of the Natural History museum and how they will enter the studios. A transition from my Semester 1’s project (see page 13) to the location for Semester 2 through the Urban pleasure of movement. This concept is then derived from scenes of Akram Khan’s Giselle and applied to re-invent the form of theatre space for this building.

Choreography Notations Analysing the structure of the choreography, oscillating movements, and axis of the stage from a chosen scene of Akram Khan’s Giselle, explores moments of momentum and rhythm through my own understanding of dance notations. From this series, viewpoints are extruded from the dance notations, resulting in five main viewpoints which surrounds the stage in a non-traditional way, challenging the design of traditional theatre.

West Elevation Scale 1:200 As part of the strategy developed to design from within the main theatre and outwards, the building adopts flexibility in space with moving partition walls that accentuate the west facade, and allowing a sense of transparency to the community. The curtain wall also contextualises from the previous Darwin building and carries on the glass facade from the Phase II Darwin building which also reveals the ‘cocoon’.

Exploded Axonometric Some materials have been assigned to be re-used from the Phase I Darwin building as part of a material passport. The Tsunami Memorial will not be removed, as well as the curved stairs surrounding it. The axonometric serves as an insight to how the elements are constructed.
Construction Sequence The sequence looks into how the landscape has been re-designed including two radial ramps, to help construction equipment and machinery reach the building on the grounds of the museum, considering that this is on the main roads of South Kensington. The construction sequence also explores the time-line of how the building elements come together on site, with consideration of the existing elements on site, protected and worked around, inspiring a performance of choreographed construction in itself.

Structure The building is flexible for space and can ‘open up’ depending on the seasonal change, encouraging natural ventilation to flow through and controlling sources of light. The suspended stage and stage wall is the highlight of the theatre, allowing the space to transition as the ballet is performed and move with the dancers as part of the performance. These renders have been annotated in inspiration of what the interiors would mean as a space to the clients and how this building would function for them. The choreographer, the dancer (ENB), and the viewer are the main clients to this building. The viewers are students and members of the public that enjoy ballet but missed the opportunity to watch Akram Khan’s Giselle at Sadler Well’s Theatre. For the choreographer and dancer, this main space functions specifically to suit the movements of the dance. There is a more intimate use and awareness of the viewers. Therefore, the main theatre is to host less than 50 viewers.

The Picturesque through Japanese MA: A Salon of North-West Moments
Academic: Year 3 First Semester Studio Project Tutors: Dr Constance Lau, Stephen Harty Location: The East Lawn & Hintze Hall of the Natural History Museum, London UK
A salon can be defined as a gathering either for pleasure or to educate. It was where the very heart of the 18th-century enlightenment took place, with conversation, education, pleasure, and debate. The Salon of North-West moments consists of three key spaces, a courtyard gateway walk-through, and a viewing gallery, located within the grounds of the Natural History Museum, South Kensington in London. My interpretation of a salon is a series of experiences, transitional spaces in which narrative is shared. The picturesque through Japanese Ma is a transitional period of spaces from East to West. The salon exhibits wood relief carvings of Marianne North’s collection and references to her history and art of botanical study in the Hintze Hall of the Natural History Museum. The salon, designed from Japanese principles of moment, contrasts between the 18th Century English Picturesque’s idealised nature and the Japanese understanding of nature, which had reached its peak of enlightenment within the same period (Edo). The salon of North- West moments celebrates nature from a different perspective of aesthetics, following a narrative that restores the relationship between man and nature as an experience.

Site and Analysis In relation to light and location on plan, the salon is placed on site within context to the past principles of Albertopolis and the Japanese principles of Ikebana (arrangement of flowers) as well as the Kyo-Machiya house of Sugimoto. It is within context to the analysis of lighting on site. As the courtyard derives from the studies from moment, there needs to be a ‘moment’ where the light enters the salon in a certain way that the exhibit can be most appreciated, just as where an Ikebana arrangement is placed and how at one point of the day, the lighting will create a moment where it is most beautified and appreciated.

The Narrative ‘Doing a Duchamp’ Integrating concepts developed from my own experience of nature, through experimenting with Woodblock printing, practicing ‘Ikebana’, the arrangement of flowers, and Kanji calligraphy. All three practices in relation to nature, derived into the foundations of understanding ‘Ma’. In reference to analysing a Kyo machiya house in Sugimoto, one of the main elements is the character of ‘Ma’ and can be defined as ‘the space in between’. This form of space has been a long-standing tradition in which Japanese architecture is built on and ignited a series of design strategies.

The Courtyard of Light The Courtyard of Light, located in the East Lawn of the Natural History Museum, explores the significance of space within a moment. The Courtyard hosts a Noh Theatre performance, to mark the start of entering the salon, connecting the visitor into the museum building through a carved gateway tunnel. The courtyard is designed thoroughly from calculations of principles of Ikebana (the arrangement of flowers) and light.

The Viewing Gallery The intention is to allow the structure to become a mixed-use space within the museum. The structure is part of the performance, beginning in the courtyard, it hosts the performers from Theatre Complicitê, as the plan is in a similar form of the Japanese Noh Theatre. Referencing the viewing points to the audience, visitors are then invited to enter the structure. When there is no performance taking place, visitors of the museum are allowed to explore the structure as part of a Hintze Hall exhibit. 1. The project is a high-end residential plot which sits within a residential mixed-led development London. The plot is part of a masterplan and the building is designed in a way for each flat to have a view of the river Thames. My main responsibility is to work on a reserved matter application. This involves the stage 3 plans, and starting stage 4 detailing including SVPs, core lift details and core staircase detailing. This also includes meetings for structure development and technical consultants as well as M&E and Fire safety to update detailing on dry-risers, column placements and core structures/wall linings etc. I have also been involved in updating the exterior facade review documents as well.

Wakefield Masterplan, Urban Design Planning and Consultation, Stage 0-1
THIS IS WAKEFIELD: RE-IMAGINING THE CITY CENTRE
Farrells has been appointed to develop Wakefield’s city centre regeneration masterplan. The Masterplan re imagines the city centre following 3 rounds of public consultations. I have been involved in refining the full masterplan document as well as creating the main boards and banners for the public consultations that took place over this Summer and Autumn 2021. This included refining and working on diagrams and mapping for the masterplan framework. It was important for us to make clear diagrams communicate and interact with the public to ensure we received valuable feedback.

In addition, I have also worked on developing scenarios for site appraisals which were used to test the viability of the masterplan. This included sketching and mass modelling on Revit for appraisal sites. This was over a series of residential-led plots, and included estimating numbers of units and GIA schedules.

Feedback and Changes
The survey showed differing feedback on the pedestrianisation of George Street, Northgate and Cross Street. Instead of fully pedestrianised areas, the masterplan proposes traffic calming measures, with potential reduction of carriageway width and widening the pavement for improved pedestrian and cycling links, without removing access to shops and homes. The ambition is for Wood Street to be pedestrianised. We have included further details which can be reviewed in the Chapter 5: Movement blueprint of the Draft Masterplan document.

Rumi Mosque 2
The Mosque is located in Edmonton, London, UK. The proposal for the mosque is to include extensions on the 1st floor and refurbishing the building to provide more space. The building is Grade II listed, therefore it was important to have the least impact on the building’s exterior and overall facade. An example would be designing the overhead canopy to be free-standing. 1. Proposed Ground Floor Plan 2. Proposed Front (East) Elevation 3. Proposed Long Section

‘Eden Mosque’ Preston Mosque Competition This inspiration of the design concept is to focus on the relationship between the landscape and the mosque. This is a continuation of the long history of Islamic gardens in which the exterior is given as much thought as the prayer space itself. Therefore, the garden space has been considered to be an extension of worship. The mosque is located as a focal point aligned to the Qibla direction, with the gardens radiating outwards from it. A large circular courtyard is placed at the centre of the radius and encircled by the concave façade of the mosque, flanked by two conservatory wings full of lush plants and encompassed by colonnades creating a sense of enclosure and breaking this space away from the car park.
Medditeranean
The mosque and flanking greenhouses are unified by a single façade. This façade features a repeating diamond pattern of marble and glass, framing views of the interior and allowing users to catch glimpses of the conservatory’s foliage behind.

Perth Mosque, Commissioned Renders MakeSpace
The Mosque is located in Perth, Scotland. The proposal for the mosque’s interior visuals was to show a place of worship which provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere to all. The interiors show a perspective of the Main Prayer Hall and the entrance. The use of Islamic patterns are continued from the exterior design and are in a light wooden panelling and compliment the play of light within the building. The process included modelling detailing within the interiors of the 3D model, rendering perspectives and further enhancing on Photoshop. Top Left: Interior Perspective of Main Entrance. Top Right: Interior Perspective of Main Prayer Hall.
Initial Hotel renders Private Commission
Rendered images developed for an investment proposal bid. As there was no specific location, it was important to show in the images how the building would work in a forest/park environment as it was one of the main principles for the client. Other principles included having a range of warm, calming tones, bringing the outside-in design features and very modern characteristics. The process included, concept modelling, designing and modelling the exterior and an example of a suite room and finalising enhancements on Photoshop. Bottom Left: Interior Perspective of en-suite room, with private pool concept. Bottom Right: Exterior perspective, ideally the south facade of the hotel building with main pool, overlooking mountainous forest scenery.

1. Technical Blueprint Poster of Star Wars Spaceship Taking studies from original and earlier concepts of Boba Fett’s Starship from Star Wars. The intention was to develop the structure and updating the interior and technical design to match with the current concepts as scene in ‘The Mandalorian’ and behind the scenes animations and the way the ship functions in the TV Show. The technical posters were designed to scale with an exploded 3D view as well as matching a signature Star Wars ‘hologram’ aesthetic.

This poster is inspired by the set of Loki which had been filmed in John Portman’s Hilton Hotel. The design of the hotel was an inspiration to manipulate the viewpoint to look like the ‘Loki’ character’s symbolic helmet shape. The poster has been selected as a top 10 winner for ‘The Most Amazing Travel Destination’ and was exhibited by PosterSpy at Gallery Different in London.
