We’re the best around . . . say our clients
TEMPLES has struck gold at the prestigious Estate & Letting Agent Awards.
In the face of stiff national competition, local family-owned Cheshire-based lettings group Temples, with offices in Nantwich, Crewe, Chester and Northwich, scooped the top honours. The firm received the gold award in the National Small Lettings Chain category, for its excellent customer service as voted for by their landlords during the course of 2011 and 2012.
The award was announced by TV property expert Phil Spencer at a lavish ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane in London attended by 550 of the UK’s top estate and letting agents. Roy Kitchen, Temples managing director, said: “Everyone here at Temples is absolutely delighted to have won the National Gold award at the ESTAS.
“This means so much because it’s our landlord clients who have rated us, not a judging panel. We pride ourselves on high levels of customer service as this award shows we must be getting it right!” The awards were sponsored by Zoopla.co.uk in association with HomeLet, Endsleigh, Expert Agent, LCA Recruitment and RICS.
Phil Spencer said “The ESTAS are the most important and valuable awards in our industry. “An ESTA is not an easy accolade to pick up, to win one requires a lot of hard work, over a very long period of time.”

Chamber Team
to the summer edition of 4Front the magazine for businesses in South Cheshire Welcome to my first editorial since taking over from John Dunning and I must say it has been an extremely busy period for the Chamber.
Putting Crewe in the spotlight was firmly on the minds of the All Change for Crewe Partnership Board who attended the ‘Cheshire in Parliament Day’ recently in Westminster. The event showcased the major strengths and opportunities on offer in Cheshire and Warrington and sought to influence key decisionmakers from across Parliament and Whitehall. The All Change for Crewe strategy has ambitious growth plans for Crewe that will require inward investment both nationally and internationally and the more positive exposure the town receives the better. We all know the potential Crewe has for economic growth and prosperity but it will only be achieved if we all work together to make this happen and the private / public sector partnership Board has been set up to do exactly that.
Many businesses enjoying growth are those taking advantage of the exporting opportunities both inside and outside Europe. International trade has a vital role to play in achieving economic growth and job creation and the Chamber is working hard with UK Trade and Investment to assist more businesses to get started with exporting and for existing exporters to expand their activities. With the right help and support I’m sure local businesses will fare better in Europe than the national football team did! Finally, I hope you enjoy this edition of the 4FRONT magazine which highlights good positive news stories and activity. I encourage all Members to submit articles for future editions and take advantage of the advertising and marketing opportunities it offers. I am pleased to see so many new Members and I welcome them to the Chamber. I encourage new and existing Members to make the most of the Chamber by getting involved in our events and activities. Please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Chamber team as they are here to help you and your business. Paul Colman Acting Chief Executive

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Crewe Alexandra’s Chairman and President of the Chamber John Bowler on his club’s recent success which resulted in promotion to League one. For those of you who made the trip to Wembley you will know what a great occasion it was and by reaching the playoffs it provided the town with fantastic media coverage which put Crewe firmly in the spotlight.
Despite the national media continuing to promote the negative effects of the current economic situation which is denting confidence, our latest quarterly economic survey has revealed there are some positive indications that businesses in South Cheshire are showing signs of recovery. The recent Jobs fair which was organised by our MP Edward Timpson and the Chamber, attracted over 40 local businesses that were promoting job opportunities.

Local businessman conquers Three Peaks Challenge A 12-member strong team of charity fundraisers went the extra mile recently by completing the Three Peaks Challenge in a time of 23 hours 58 minutes.
The team of business professionals led by Kevin Garner, (pictured) director of K F Garner Financial Services in Crewe donned their walking boots to climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in aid of Children with Cancer.
Beginning the 24-hour challenge on Saturday, June 16, the team climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, enduring all the elements including wind, rain and even snow. The distance walked was around 27 miles with a total ascent of 9,800ft. Kevin Garner said: “The whole event was a huge success despite some rather poor weather, which saw some other teams withdrawing on Scafell Pike and Snowdon. It was a close one – the last half mile or so saw some of us running to get inside the 24 hours and that was probably the hardest run of my life!” Kevin has raised more than £1,000 for Children with Cancer but is aiming to reach a target of £2,000.

School Doodles its way to unforgettable first aid
Not only is Anna Woodhart teaching over 800 babies and toddlers per week to swim through multi-award winning Water Babies courses across Staffordshire, Cheshire and North Wales – but she’s now branched out to offer paediatric first aid courses under the newly-established training arm of Water Babies, The Doodle Training Company. And recently she returned to her old school, Shavington High School , to run complimentary Paediatric First Aid training courses for students in years 10 and 11 who are studying Health & Social Care. "What Doodle aims to do is to offer a traditional first aid course, but deliver it in a way that’s very ‘Water Babies," Anna explains. "So fun, engaging, quirky and, ultimately, memorable. And this last bit is very important. How many of us have attended courses of this kind that have gone in one ear and out the other? The last thing you want when dealing with a crisis. So at Doodle we incorporate games and quizzes with practical information to help make serious matters fun."
www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk
Anna delivered full day paediatric courses and also incorporated some extra information particularly relevant to adult first aid. Headteacher Carol White said: "Anna did a fantastic job of engaging with the students and came up with some really clever ways of helping them to remember vital information."

Local niche legal practice has plenty to celebrate
Nantwich Commercial Law firm Bowcock Cuerden LLP has just celebrated the 10th anniversary of its accreditation to Lexcel, the Law Society’s prestigious practice management standard.
In its latest assessment the firm was specifically complimented on its standards of client care, supervision and management of its staff, and its systems and procedures relating to individual clients’ matters. Managing Director Philip Cuerden said: “Even now, around 9 out of every 10 legal practices do not have Lexcel, and many of those which do have accreditation have only recently managed to reach that level. When we were first awarded the accreditation back in late 2001, and for a number of years since, we were the only law firm between Chester and the Potteries to have it. Initially achieving accreditation, though a major task, is really only the start. Having held it for so long has enabled us to work and develop with it over the years, for the benefit of clients and staff as well as the firm itself. Everyone at the firm is to be congratulated on this significant milestone”. The firm was founded in 1994 and is the National Farmers Union legal panel firm covering Cheshire and Derbyshire.
It has announced additional recent appointments, first as solicitors to Nantwich Town Council and also as one of five law firms nationally to the legal panel of The Land Trust. For more information on the services of Bowcock Cuerden call 01270 611106

Crewe and Nantwich Business Solicitor Andrew Tyrer of Tyrer Law highlights some common pitfalls for businesses which enter into important business contracts without taking legal advice beforehand. Here are his three top tips:
(1) Don’t over-rely on negotiations being protected by the words “subject to contract”. In a recent case, the Supreme Court ruled that, although the parties never signed the formal written agreement, a contract had nevertheless come into effect by later conduct. The Court commented that "the different decisions (in the courts below) and the arguments in this court demonstrate the perils of beginning work without agreeing the precise basis upon which it is to be done”. The moral of the story to is to agree terms first and to start work later.
Members News
Pay Attention Please - to legal small print!
(2) Don’t fudge issues by making do with woolly language simply to get the deal done quickly. One of the most common phrases in contracts is the term “reasonable endeavours”. Many business people frequently but wrongly conclude that it is so vague that it has no practical consequence. A 2011 reported case has brought it again to the fore. The case concerned a 10 year Contract with no “break” clause.
(3) Do try to use clear language and say what you mean. This does not mean simply peppering the Contract with legalese or trying to “get one over the other side” by being disingenuous. It simply means that both parties should strive to avoid uncertainty. For more information contact Andrew Tyrer 01270 842424
Stars shine for the Wingate Centre
Howard Worth Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers were very proud to have sponsored the recent All Stars charity football match at Nantwich Town Football club. The event raised money for the Wingate Special Children’s trust in Wrenbury. On possibly the wettest day of the year to date the stars of Hollyoaks, Waterloo Road and Big Brother turned up to play the Nantwich All Stars team.
www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk
The case is of interest for two reasons. First, the cost of curing the vague language was minimal. A few careful provisions could have avoided what turned out to be a costly Court case. Secondly, the most telling factor here is the fact that the Contract ought to have included a right for the Supplier to terminate early to cater for facts that were not foreseen when the Contract was made. This would have provided a parachute from a financially damaging contract.

She also attends the College’s Dane Bank Avenue campus one day a week to work towards a BTEC Business and Administration qualification as part of the programme. She carries out a whole range of duties at TBM including administration tasks in the office, reception duty and keeping track of the company’s orders. The apprenticeship is giving Kirsty the opportunity to earn cash, develop her administration skills in a busy workplace environment and gain a new qualification at the same time. TBM Rail is comprised of a group of four companies which include TBM Technologies, TBM Spares, TBM Servicing and TBM Interiors. The company combines an in-depth knowledge and experience of the rail sector with a drive and commitment to supplying high quality products and an exemplary level of service.

Former Sir William Stanier High School pupil Kirsty, of Crewe, said: “I wanted to earn some money and learn new skills at the same time so this apprenticeship and TBM has been perfect for me. I’m enjoying

going to college to study a qualification which is really helping me in the workplace.”
Neil Smith, Director of TBM Rail, recruited Kirsty through the South Cheshire College apprenticeship programme. He said: “We are a relatively new company but we have expanded at a rapid pace in a short space of time. We have set up the staff team by pulling in a wealth of experience from across the rail industry, but as our orders have taken off, we needed someone in the office to handle our orders and do the many other administrative tasks that we just don’t have time to do.”
Louise Jennings, Training and Skills Advisor at South Cheshire College, said: “Our apprenticeships give young people the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience and new qualifications which can hopefully lead to a full time job.”

high performance systems are manufactured by combining epoxy resin and hardener, which react by hardening to form a tough coating that prevents moisture from permeating the structure. As well as producing the hardening agents and surfactants that are used to make the resins, Air Products also supplies liquid or gaseous nitrogen to assist in the manufacturing process by cooling or ensuring an inert environment. Other gases, such as oxygen, are sometimes used to apply the coating, using an automated pressurised spray system or a simple, hand-held spray gun. Air Products has recently introduced a range of emissions-free hardeners, which are used to make coatings that are effective, longlasting and kind to the environment.

BENTLEY
New man in the Bentley driving seat
Bentley Motors has announced the appointment of Dr Wolfgang Schreiber (54) as its new Chairman and Chief Executive. Dr Schreiber joins Bentley from his current role as CEO at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. He will commence his new position on September 1, 2012 and succeeds Wolfgang Dürheimer (53) who, as part of an extensive structural and management realignment within the Volkswagen Group, moves to become the member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at Audi AG.
Speaking about his new role, Dr Schreiber comments: “I am looking forward to working with the whole Bentley team to implement and further develop the successful growth strategy. The Continental GT, the Flying Spur and the Mulsanne are unique British luxury cars that appeal to an increasing number of customers around the world. We will work hard to bring the Bentley SUV from concept stage into series production and thus establish a third successful model line for the company.”
www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk
Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, an engineering graduate, joined the Volkswagen Group in 1984. He was made head of transmission and drivetrain development at the Volkswagen brand in 1996. His responsibility during that time included the development of transmission and drivetrain components for the Bentley Continental GT and Arnage. He moved to Bugatti Engineering in 2003 to take up the post of Technical Director and later Managing Director of the supersports car company over the next eight years. Schreiber has been the member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles responsible for development since September 2006 and additionally was made Speaker for the Board of Management in February 2010. Speaking about the appointment, the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn says: “Dr Schreiber and Mr Dürheimer have one important thing in common: they are both thoroughbred engineers and represent the technical expertise of Volkswagen Group. This is why I am absolutely certain that Dr Schreiber is the right man to continue the successful strategy at Bentley.”
During his tenure at Bentley since February 2011, Mr Dürheimer has seen the company set a new world ice speed record of 331 km/h (205mph) and has overseen the introduction of the new Bentley Continental GT model line with the coupe and convertible and V8 generation, as well as the development of the SUV concept which had its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The EXP 9 F concept was initiated and pushed forward under Dürheimer’s brief, giving a clear message that Bentley aims to enter new territory by building the pinnacle luxury performance SUV. Speaking about his tenure at Bentley Motors, Mr Dürheimer says: “I want to thank the whole Bentley team for their dedication and excellent work. Together we have built a robust business and Bentley can look forward to a very optimistic future.”

Students ‘on track’ for Business Experience
Youngsters from Kings Grove High School have been working to support two Crewe schools events in partnership with leading supplier of safeguarding and pupil monitoring solutions, Crewe-based SG World.
Year 10 students, Rachel Armstrong, Rebecca Latham, Georgina Costello and April Williams, have been involved in designing wristbands and ID cards which were produced by SG World and donated for use at the two events: “OlymPicnic”, a picnic at Queen’s Park on 20 June and “OnTrack”, a safety and awareness day at the Crewe Heritage Centre on 27 June. The pupils visited SG World’s headquarters off of University Way where they were given a guided tour and a briefing for both the wristband and ID card projects designed to teach Year 4s about awareness of strangers.
Steve Floodgate, SG World Communications Director, said: ‘As a leading supplier of safeguarding and pupil monitoring solutions, we felt this was a natural partnership to make and we were keen to provide local students with a fresh and exciting educational experience. Handling a real project, with a real outcome, from start to finish is a valuable experience for anyone starting out in the workforce, so we were delighted to expand this opportunity for learning to these four highly motivated students."

Grime-busters clean up with new contract
A Nantwich company is boosting its staff numbers after scooping its second major contract of the year. Environmental specialists Suddenstrike has won a three-year contract with a Mid Cheshirebased housing trust to provide repair and improvements services to its properties throughout Cheshire. Earlier this year the family firm which specialises in pest control, wildlife management and groundwork, beat companies from across the country to a two-year contract with DEFRA. Now staff numbers are increasing from seven to 11 as the firm handles its hefty workload and begins its seasonal onslaught of homes plagued by pests. Spokeswoman Emily Wilkinson said: “It’s also great to be in a position where we can make new jobs for local people. We have just taken on an extra two and three more are set to join.” The firm has invested in rebranding its fleet of vans, trucks and diggers while kitting out its workforce in new uniforms. They are also set to expand there fleet by taking delivery of two further vehicles at the end of this month and another in September.

Where a company has gone in to liquidation, the trade name may have some value to the directors, especially if they wish to carry on trading through a new business. The Insolvency Act covers directors who were in office at any time in the twelve months prior to liquidation. Let’s call them Mr White and Mr Black.
The Act says a prohibited name is the Old Company name, or a name ‘so close as to suggest an association’. It includes trading styles and abbreviations. It’s a criminal offence if, in the five years after the liquidation, those individuals are involved with a new limited company or any other type of business using a prohibited name. So Mr White and Mr Black can’t be involved in any business, with the same or similar name, for five years. If they are involved, and the New Company fails, then Mr White and Mr Black are personally liable for the debts of the New Company that were incurred while they were involved. If Mr Grey acts as director in place of Mr White and Mr Black, knowing that they are barred from acting as directors, then Mr Grey will also be personally liable for the debts of the New Company that were incurred while he was following Mr White and Mr Black’s instructions. The good news is that there are exceptions.
The second exception is that if you didn’t apply to Court before the Old Company went in to liquidation, you’ve got seven days after the liquidation to apply to Court for permission to act as a director; and you can act for up to six weeks while the Court thinks about the application. The third exception is that you don’t need permission where the New Company – although it’s got a prohibited name – was actively trading under that name for at least a year before the liquidation. Restarting a business is a difficult and complicated task, with pitfalls for the unwary. The key to planning is to get early advice. If cash flow and money worries are pressing, ask for help now. MGJL believes that there's a market for plain, straightforward advice on the solutions available to help you deal with your creditors fairly and to rebuild your business free of debt worries. Contact us for a free consultation – if we can help you to avoid formal insolvency, we will. If we cannot, we will help to plan your next steps and help you to regain control of your finances.
Mackenzie Goldberg Johnson Limited We help businesses take the necessary steps to financial recovery First we need to release the critical pressure created by a lack of solvency and cash and protect the business from court action, recovery agents, and creditor pressure. Receivership, Liquidation and Bankruptcy are not the only options. Some form of future for the business can often be worked out.

So the general rule is – you can’t act.
The first exception is when the New Company buys the business of the Old Company from the liquidator. Provided the director sends a notice to creditors and publishes it, he may then act. You wouldn’t be able to use this route unless the business is acquired from a liquidator.

Take action to prevent summer sickies
Employment law, health and safety specialists Citation are warning local companies to be on their guard against a ‘summer of sickies.’ Boss Lindsay Hill, (pictured) said: “Some people think going off sick is an easy way to recover from a night of celebration, particularly after staying up late watching sport. But evidence is needed that the illness isn’t genuine, and appropriate steps must be taken to ensure employers don’t fall foul of the law. We recommend taking steps to discourage staff from throwing sickies.
“For example, make sure the employee knows they have to speak to a line manager when calling in sick. This makes it much more difficult for staff and one which tests the nerve as well as the acting skills of the most determined skiver. Insisting on a phone call to notify of sick leave, rather than text or email, is another useful deterrent - and it never hurts morale to provide access to TV coverage in the office at appropriate times.” In a survey of all Citation customers, employers said that managing sickness was their biggest headache.

CTC Physiotherapy reduce council’s sickness absence costs by over £300,000 New Birmingham Chamber member CTC Physiotherapy is working with Staffordshire County Council to significantly reduce staff absence levels through the introduction of an innovative rapid access physiotherapy pilot project. The pilot is one of a number of new measures launched by Staffordshire County Council in February 2012 that have seen an eight percent drop in staff absence - and a resulting £300,000 cost saving - since they were introduced. Ian Parry, cabinet member for finance and transformation, said: “A fit and healthy workforce is key for a well run council that offers value for money services to its residents. While some staff sickness is unavoidable in any organisation, this new approach has had a big effect. It’s about taking quick action to prevent staff from going off sick, or when they are absent, helping them get back to work as soon as possible.
www.southcheshirechamber.co.uk
“The result is more than 1,000 extra days worked a month by our staff, (providing the services that people in Staffordshire rely on,) equating to a saving of more than £100,000 a month.”
20
Rick Carter, Managing Director of CTC Physiotherapy explains why the measures include a focus on physiotherapy. “We are delighted to be working with Staffordshire County Council in such a positive and proactive approach.” “A recent report by the Office of National Statistics highlights that in 2011 35million days were lost to musculoskeletal problems – which top the list of reasons for absence. Organisations can tackle these statistics head on in an extremely cost-effective manner by providing staff with access to physiotherapy.” A physiotherapy service is now in place for staff with conditions such as pain and stiffness in joints, muscles, nerves and soft tissues. It offers rapid treatment to help staff return to work quickly. Physiotherapy interventions consist of a telephone triage process, introduced for managers to use within 24 hours of an employee being off work. During the call the nature of the problem is established and advice and appropriate exercises discussed about how to manage conditions. Hands-on physiotherapy is then arranged at a location convenient to the employee if necessary. A proactive preventative service is also being piloted for staff in work, aimed at preventing absence.

The Chamber says thank you to Les Briers . . . The Chamber would like to thank Les Briers who has carried out the role of business loans advisor to the Chamber for the last 16 years.
“Les has been a stalwart of the organisation and the source of invaluable advice to local businesses over the years. We wish him all the best in his retirement,” said Chamber Acting Chief Executive Paul Colman. Richard Weilding now steps into this role. During my time in the banking world one of the regular comments made concerned the notion that you could always rely upon your bank manager to give you an umbrella when it wasn't raining but as soon as it clouded over he was nowhere to be found.
Richard Weilding who joins the Chamber as a Loans Specialist
Well if ever there was a need for an umbrella it has been this summer and with the banking world remaining turbulent, suffice to say that an umbrella from your banker would be hard to find.
Having taken up a new position with the Chamber, I feel that I can at last shake off the umbrella comments and approach my new role with fresh vigour. My first job therefore has been to acquire a stack of umbrellas and on the assumption that the summer will continue in its present format.
After that my aim is to spread this piece of good news - the Chamber has funds available to assist local businesses. Up to £10,000 can be provided for short term working capital requirements – usually repayable over a maximum 2 year period, with longer term projects covering requirements up to £25,000 being funded over a period extending to 5 years. All that we stipulate is that the Chamber is not the main funder for the project covered by the request, where we limit our support to a maximum of 50% of total costs. Funding is designed to aid business projects which are likely to create jobs and assist in the regeneration of the local economy of Crewe and Nantwich. I look forward to calls from businesses who for once may be able to get an umbrella from a banker when it is actually raining! They were part of the ‘Cheshire in Parliament day’ event, which showcased the major strengths and opportunities on offer in Cheshire and Warrington which included key decision-makers from across Parliament and Whitehall. Chamber officials have congratulated Crewe Alexandra FC as it looks forward to a new football season in League One. A fleet of coaches carrying more than 12,000 Crewe fans travelled to Wembley to see the Railwaymen complete a mission impossible and leave their Cheltenham Town counterparts devastated.
“From a business perspective, it lifts the mood in Crewe and puts the town on the map for all the rights reasons. We have a great location for any business looking to invest in our area, a willing and skilled workforce and now a League One football team to boot.” Alex fans, now delirious with delight, are counting the days to kick off in August. Cheese is still on the menu at show
One of the wettest summers on record has forced organisers to pull the plug on the Nantwich Show but the International Cheese Show will still go ahead (see page 30).
Sadly it means the Chamber has also had to cancel the Pre-Nantwich Show Business Reception staged on the showground the night before. In a statement, joint show secretaries, George and Adrian Lawrence, said: “It is with extreme regret that we have to advise you that due to the exceptional heavy rain and impossible showground conditions, the decision has been made to cancel the Agricultural Show, however, the Cheese Show (International Cheese Awards Nantwich) will continue as scheduled. With no end in sight to the terrible weather there was really no alternative.”
Madeleine Abbey, Chamber executive for events and marketing, added: “It is regrettable that both the show and the pre show reception have become victims of the British weather but the business reception, always a popular event, will be on our networking calendar for next year. In the meantime, the autumn and winter months will offer many opportunities to network and make new contacts in the business community.” From exporting and golf to annual lunch and business awards - there are many Dates for your Diary See inside back cover for more information or call Madeleine on 01270 504700
Students sample Chamber life

The South Cheshire Chamber has been host to two international interns this year. Emilie Fermeuse and Prishka Caunhye have joined us from Belgium and France respectively as part of an initiative in conjunction with MMU Cheshire. The placements have proven beneficial to both parties, with the interns being able to sample business life in another country, which counts towards their final University grade and the hosting company benefits from having an educated student working on a particular project.
Both projects had an international flavour to them, looking at our international events and the connections between Crewe and its twinned towns, Macon in France, Bischofsheim in Germany and Dzierzoniow in Poland.

More than 2,000 people from all walks of life turned flocked to the Crewe and Nantwich Jobs Fair. Organised by Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson, and supported by the South Cheshire Chamber, the Chronicle and Crewe Alexandra Football Club, the event drew huge crowds of young people all hoping to get a leg-up on the employment ladder. More than 45 of the area’s leading companies were on hand at the Alexandra Stadium to showcase their job opportunities and offer advice to the young students, job-hunters and apprentices. Among them were many leading Chamber members including Bentley, Mornflake, Reaseheath College, SG World, MMU, South Cheshire College and BAE Systems. Your County Needs You!
Cheshire SkillShare is continuing to thrive in the South Cheshire area, thanks to the support from the CVS and the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. It has now recruited two, new voluntary business connectors Gareth Williams from Construction Linx and Karen Brady from UK Fuels who have been passed the baton from the scheme’s successful former local representative Lee Ramsden, who was involved from the outset. Their roles cover the Crewe and Nantwich area and have the full support from the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire David Briggs MBE who first came up with the concept of matching the skills local businesses have to offer to local charities and community organisations. Gareth said “Cheshire SkillShare is a way for your business and staff to support local society by donating some of your skills to help some truly inspirational local voluntary and community organisations. It is a way to demonstrate a genuine commitment to corporate social responsibility, a way to provide a motivational and fulfilling environment for staff and a way to generate positive publicity.” Karen has joined the scheme in the last month and has been a key member of staff at UK Fuels Limited in Crewe for some 21 years and currently has the role of Operations Manager where she is continually looking to make improvements across the business.
If you are interested in partaking in the scheme, our local SkillShare provider will visit you to discuss the ways in which you can get involved, the skills that your business can offer and the level of commitment you would like to make. Come rain or shine the festival will be a success!
The festival will once again be a free event to anyone who would like to enjoy its mouth-watering array of attractions. Everything will take place in the heart of Nantwich with giant marquees on the town square and behind St Mary’s Church on the Bowling Green car-park while the Civic Hall will be transformed into a vast Gourmet Food Hall housing up to 50 stalls. Nantwich Food and Drink Festival officials have welcomed several key sponsors onboard as they work flat out to make this year’s event the biggest and best yet.
Businesses across town will be throwing up their doors to stage events including whisky tasting sessions, sausage-making workshops, cup cake decorating classes, Aga food demonstrations and more. Famous for its cheese, no Cheshire food festival would be without it and there will be numerous varieties to sample as well as speciality breads, sausages and award-winning pork pies. Mrs Robb added: “Everyone loves the idea of the festival being free of charge. And in these recession-hit times we know that is very important to local families.”
Cheshire East Council, Nantwich Town Council, Mornflake and Bentley are getting behind the event once again and joining them as sponsors are South Cheshire-based businesses Barringtons Chartered Accountants, Temples letting agents and Delmar Press printers. The Chronicle is also onboard as a media partner.

Safety day proves a splash hit
Show serves up a trio of dishy chefs!
Best Start Up Business of The Year 2011 winners, Overwater Marina, are proud to announce the success of their Safety Afloat & Family Fun Day.
Three celebrity chefs will wow the crowds at this year’s International Cheese Awards. Last year, hugely popular celebrity chefs Gino d’Acampo and James Martin thrilled visitors with a series of cookery demonstrations, and they have agreed to return this year too on Wednesday, July 25. Joining them will be another housewife’s favourite, Jean Christophe Novelli.
Safety Afloat was a free open event that not only promoted awareness in all aspects of safety in, on and around water, but also raised over £1,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
New for this year in the cheese marquee is an education centre, showing the process of cheese-making from source to shelf. It includes a farmyard, live cheese making demo, talks from various producers and a tasting area showcasing a wide range of dairy products.
Overwater already regularly supports this very worthy cause by providing a mooring for the weekend trip boat, The Audlem Lass. The volunteer team who skipper this boat are out in all weathers every weekend and bank holidays from April to October. Full credit goes to them for their organisation which led to the success of this event. Events and displays included an RAF Squirrel Helicopter and a range of in-water rescue demonstrations from Cheshire Fire and Rescue and Paul Shurr’s Canoe Club. To have gained the support of such high profile sponsors is a real coup for the festival which is a not-for-profit organisation so any support we can get is vital.”

Gold medal winners - Ron and Pat Birchall were thrilled with the company’ success at the awards ceremony
Ron said: “As a company we have been going 35 years, six of them in Crewe, and to win three gold medals in recognition of outstanding performance made us feel like Olympic winners.” The awards were presented before a crowd of 900 people at the plush Roundhouse in London.

South Cheshire College is delighted to announce the achievement of a prestigious national standard.
The Crewe College has been awarded the New Engineering Foundation’s (NEF) STEM Assured status which recognises excellence in the quality of scientific, technical mathematical and engineering delivery in education and training. Project hailed a ‘resounding success’
Total People are reaping the rewards of a successful work-based learning project which has resulted in more than 200 of their staff achieving Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) qualifications.
The IAG project provided staff with the opportunity to obtain a recognised qualification whilst enhancing their understanding of their own job and the role the company plays in providing advice and guidance to employers and individuals.
The qualification, aimed at people working in roles that involve the provision of advice and guidance, included themes such as interacting with clients via social media and supporting clients to make use of the advice and guidance services provided. Total People MD Nigel Hartley said: “The IAG project has been a resounding success resulting in significant business benefits and a positive impact on our staff and employer-base alike.”
As a result of the project and the training undertaken, Total People have since delivered in excess of 100 Organisational Needs Analyses with employers of all sizes – many of which have subsequently drawn up development plans to help improve their business with support from Total People staff.

Accountants expand with new acquisition
Cheshire accountancy firm Howard Worth has further developed the practice with a new acquisition. The firm, which has offices in Nantwich and Northwich, has acquired George Snape Chartered Accountants on the retirement of George Snape, who founded the practice in Winsford in 1988. George Snape will now cease trading under that name, with his team members, including George’s son, Mike are joining Howard Worth’s Northwich office. Howard Worth managing partner Richard Barnett said: “When George decided to retire, his primary concern was that his clients continued to receive an excellent service and that his son, Mike, had the opportunity to provide that service to their clients. “Mike felt his clients’ interests would be best served by joining a larger firm, and we are delighted that Mike has decided to join our practice. We will ensure George Snape’s clients maintain continuity of service and they will also benefit from the range of additional services we are able to offer.” Clients of George Snape will be invited to a party to mark George’s retirement, to be held at Howard Worth’s Northwich office in May. Cheshire Academy set for ‘Special’ Olympics
The nationally-renowned Cheshire Academy of Integrated Sport and Arts based on Macon Way in Crewe is busy gearing up for the Olympics, but not for the 2012 Olympics but the 2013 National Special Olympic games to be held in Bath.

The Cheshire Academy organises 12 different disability accessible sports and intends to send 38 athletes and coaches to the National Games in Bath next year in the sports of Rhythmic Gymnastics, Bocce, Boccia and Artistic Gymnastics It is busy fundraising the £30,000 it needs for the athletes to compete at the games. And this last bit is very important. How many of us have attended courses of this kind that have gone in one ear and out the other? The last thing you want when dealing with a crisis. So at Doodle we incorporate games and quizzes with practical information to help make serious matters fun."

SOUTH CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Kirsty is on track for success with rail group
A young apprentice is on track for a successful career after linking up with one of the area’s high-flying rail companies. Kirsty Walley is going from strength-to-strength on the South Cheshire College Business and Administration apprenticeship with Crewe-based TBM Rail.
The 17-year-old works four days a week at the company which provides a comprehensive range of products and services and cost effective solutions for the UK rail industry.

Grime-busters clean up with new contract
A Nantwich company is boosting its staff numbers after scooping its second major contract of the year.

So the general rule is – you can’t act.
The first exception is when the New Company buys the business of the Old Company from the liquidator. Provided the director sends a notice to creditors and publishes it, he may then act. You wouldn’t be able to use this route unless the business is acquired from a liquidator.

Legendary Bentley sets £4.5 million auction record
Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin’s dramatic 4½ Litre Supercharged ‘Blower’ single seat racing machine returned to record-breaking form by reaching a sale price of £4.5 million when auctioned by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This new world-best for Birkin’s striking 240bhp supercharged red racer now outstrips the previous record by a Bentley at auction when the Speed Six known as ‘Old No 2’ achieved £2.8 million at the Le Mans Classic in 2004. In March 1932 Birkin set a record 137.96mph at Brooklands, a feat even a man renowned for pushing back the limits in motor sport would describe as hair-raising.

For further information contact me, Richard Weilding, at the Chamber on 01270 504700

It’s up to you how much time you donate. Every bit helps! Your SkillShare broker will then match your skills with a suitable charitable need. Benefits of Participating In SkillShare:
• Making a positive difference in local community
• Your contribution to “Big Society” Achievement of CSR goals • Staff development & motivation
• Positive profile / image in community • Positive PR

UK Fuels became involved because managing director Bill Holmes sent a team of employees to help at The Wishing Well Charity in Crewe. Karen says: “This turned out to be a great opportunity for me because Bill offered my time on secondment to SkillShare for the next 12 months in the role of Business Connector. I am extremely excited about the prospect of working with local businesses and charities in the community.”

Crewe Model Boat Club were also on hand with an interesting display of boats allowing adults and children alike the chance to take the helm. Various gazebos and marquees housed a range of arts and crafts and even more unusual exhibits such as a live owl display.

Festival chairman Deborah Robb said: “Our aim is top help boost the local economy by pulling thousands of people into town over a weekend when things normally quieten down for tourism. To have gained the support of such high profile sponsors is a real coup for the festival which is a not-for-profit organisation so any support we can get is vital.”
Judges will select star cheeses from 3,926 entries, making the 115th cheese awards a record year. They will be open to visitors from 9am5pm. Tickets are £5 for adults or free for children.
