Welcome to Pro Pueblo Fair-Trade Pro Pueblo is a non-profit foundation and a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). OUR MISSION is to create sustainable income opportunities, alleviate poverty, improve livelihoods and promote environmental stewardship in South American communities. SUSTAINABLE LOCAL MATERIALS are used as a direct result of our commitment to nature, thus reducing pressure on the unique and endangered habitat of the surrounding dry tropical forests. Hundreds of high quality products are handcrafted from natural materials like tagua (vegetable ivory), ceramic, bamboo, balsa wood, and fibers such as abaca, banana husk, sisal, and toquilla (the material used for making Panama hats), all of which are indigenous to Ecuador. HIGH QUALITY WORKMANSHIP is required for the complex and time-consuming task of hand-carving ornaments, figurines and other objects that demand years of experience on the part of the artisan. FAIR TRADE principles are strictly followed according to WFTO guidelines in our relationships with the artisans. As a NON-PROFIT, all proceeds go back to support the operation of approximately 350 artisans and their families. Pro Pueblo provides assistance in many areas such as marketing, training, financing micro-loans for tools, quality improvement and social development programs in their communities. THANK YOU for being a fundamental part of this unique contribution. To learn more about us, please visit: www.propueblo.org

OTHER PRODUCTS

All Pro Pueblo jewelry is made from the finest materials: hand-carved tagua, handwoven toquilla and Swarovski crystals. Most of our jewelry is available in a variety of colors and sizes.

The tagua nut is also known as “vegetable ivory” for it’s similarities to animal ivory in texture, color, and aging processes. The palm tree that produces the tagua nut grows naturally in the rain forests of South America where it is a sustainable and renewable resource. The dark brown exterior of the tagua nut is polished to give it a beautiful natural shine. It can also be gently sanded and polished to produce a marbled pattern just below the surface. Sanding beyond the marble reveals the white core of the nut. This white tagua can then be fried in oil, resulting in a deeply caramel-colored tagua. Like animal ivory, white tagua turns a warm, antiqued cream color as it ages.

OTHER PRODUCTS:

Pro Pueblo offers a variety of other products including home goods, games and baskets. Our home goods line includes napkin rings, candle holders and several dining table items in multiple sizes.
