“FROM FARMING TO FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT” •

A SMALL, HISTORICALLY AGRICULTURAL TOWN, ON THE SOUTHEAST PART OF WISCONSIN. THE STATE PRODUCES LARGE PERCENTAGES OF GINSENG, CRANBERRIES, DAIRY AND MAPLE SYRUP FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

RICHLAND CENTER HAS VERY LOW DIVERSITY AND NEARLY THE SAME PERCENTAGE OF HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS AS THE US AS A WHOLE (15%).

THE TOWN IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN ITS HISTORICAL PAST, BUT VERY LITTLE ASPECTS, ARCHITECTURAL OR OTHERWISE, POINT TO ANY MOVEMENT TOWARDS THE PRESENT OR FUTURE.

IT IS KNOWN MOSTLY FOR ITS BRICK HISTORICAL SITES, NAMELY THE AD GERMAN WAREHOUSE, DESIGNED BY THE NATIVE LEGEND, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. IT IS THE ONLY BUILDING BUILT BY THE FAMOUS ARCHITECT IN HIS HOMETOWN. THE WAREHOUSE HAS BEEN MOSTLY UNUSED SINCE ITS CONSTRUCTION.

THE BRICK •

THE BRICK RELATES TO THE SITE + STRUCTURE + CONTEXT.

BRICK CHEESE WAS CREATED IN WISCONSIN, GIVEN ITS NAME FOR ITS RECTANGULAR SHAPED AFTER BEING PRESSED WITH CLAY FIRED BRICKS. IT IS ONE OF THE OLDEST STYLES OF CHEESE.

THE AD GERMAN WAREHOUSE, AS WELL AS MOST OTHER SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURES IN RICHLAND CENTER, IS CLAD IN BRICK.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT USED BRICK IN MANY OF HIS STRUCTURES DUE TO ITS AVAILABILITY AND HISTORY

THE BRICK IS A FOUNDATIONAL MATERIAL THAT HAS STRENGTH IN JUST ONE MODULE BUT GAINS GREATER STABILITY WHEN MORE ARE ADDED.

IN THE CONTEXT OF A COMMUNITY, EACH INDIVIDUAL IS A BRICK. UNIQUE, AND MAYBE EVEN STRONG ON ITS OWN. BUT THERE IS STRENGTH, AND A HOST OF OTHER BENEFITS, IN NUMBERS.

CONCEPT

THE ADAPTIVE REUSE OF THE AD GERMAN WAREHOUSE WILL TRANSFORM IT INTO A SPACE FOR SOCIAL HOUSING AND COMMUNITY COHESION THAT CELEBRATES THE ESSENTIAL JOYS OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT. THE HOMELESS POPULATION’S NEEDS FOR STABILITY, THE CITIZENS NEED FOR DETAILED CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND TOURISTS’ NEEDS FOR A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE WILL BE FULFILLED USING THE BRICK AS INSPIRATION. A COMMON SIGHT IN RICHLAND CENTER, A MATERIAL STAPLE IN THE DESIGNS OF THE BUILDING’S ORIGINAL ARCHITECT, (AND EVEN THE NAME OF A CHEESE CREATED IN WISCONSIN), THE BRICK EMBODIES ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT’S SITE, STRUCTURE, AND CONTEXT. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BRICK, INCLUDING ITS SYMMETRICAL GEOMETRY, MODULARITY, AND HUMAN-BASED PROPORTIONS WILL INFLUENCE PATTERN THROUGHOUT THE SPACE. THE MORTAR SURROUNDING THE BRICK WILL BE REPRESENTED THROUGH FLEXIBLE CIRCULATION PATHS THAT CONNECT SPACES IN UNEXPECTED WAYS.

Organic produce and community ties both grow in this open air environment. Private studios allow tenants to have restful, restorative alone time while central amenity spaces give opportunity to create friendly relationships that promote healthy rehabilitation A gallery, workspace, and classroom encourage creativity and discovery. A warm, aromatic space ďŹ lled with a variety of patterns that stiumulate curiosity and wonder invites users to make connections with new people.
