JEFF MASTRO a recipe for sucess

In Arizona very few have not heard about the Mastro family and what seems like a lifetime of steakhouse success. For 19 years Jeff Mastro, along with his father Dennis, brother Mike and partner Scott Troilo have been at the helm of some of the country’s best steakhouses. Even after selling several restaurants in the mid 2000’s, Jeff Mastro and his partners are always re-inventing themselves and creating new concepts, that each time just get better and better. Their recipe for success starts with using the highest grade prime steaks and seafood, combined with world class customer service and ends with philanthropy and an incredible appetite for giving back. It’s easy to see why so many fall in love with the cuisine as much with the family behind the popular Dominick’s Steakhouse and Steak 44. We sat down with Jeff Mastro to find out more on his recipe for success and what’s next for his Prime Steak Concepts.

How did you and your family get involved in the restaurant business? Mastro’s Steakhouse and Mastro’s Ocean Club were our entrance into the upscale steakhouse and upscale seafood restaurant business in 1999. Our group is composed of me, my Dad Dennis, my brother Mike and Scott Troilo. We sold in 2007 and then started our new concepts Dominick’s Steakhouse in Scottsdale in the Scottsdale Quarter, then Steak 44 in Phoenix on 44th Street at Camelback, then Steak 48 in Houston in the River Oaks area and then Steak 48 in Chicago in the River North area. Our next restaurant opening the end of this year will be Ocean 44 in Scottsdale on Goldwater Boulevard just north of Camelback Road – a seafood restaurant with incredible fresh seafood and of course our Dominick’s and Steak 44 steaks. After selling Mastro’s, City Hall and the Ocean Club in 2007 to the Landry Group, you later opened the widely successful and popular Dominick’s Steakhouse in Scottsdale and then Steak 44 in Phoenix. How do you continue to out do yourself with every new concept? What is your recipe for success? We sold Mastro’s to a couple private equity firms in 2007 and then they sold to Landry’s a few years later. We now have Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44 and two Steak 48s. We are hyper-focused on guest services and food quality all set in a really cool, comfortable, warm, and contemporary environment. We are constantly training and re-training our staff in order to give our guests a world class experience. Additionally, as a family and as a company we have a constant focus on philanthropy and giving back to our local communities. Ocean 44 will open in in late November of 2018 near Scottsdale Fashion Square. Tell us about this new seafood inspired concept? As mentioned above, Ocean 44 is our latest concept which shall be headlined by incredible fresh fish, some of which cooked in our custom-made wood-fired oven set forth in our on-stage kitchen and right next to our our 18-foot raw bar. Ocean 44 shall also include our Dominick’s and Steak 44 steaks. Ocean 44 will be a combination of some grand spaces and some intimate spaces so as to give our guests many dining options. We have traveled the country developing the Ocean 44 menu which shall include some of the greatest items from our travels.

Equally as impressive as your restaurants is your family’s philanthropic spirit and the tremendous amount of giving you do every year for such note worthy causes like Make-A-Wish Arizona, Larry Fitzgerald’s First Down Fund, Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue and many other amazing organizations. What drives your family to give back? We have always made charitable giving a very important part of our lives and our business lives. This is what makes it all worthwhile. We always want to do our small part as long as we can. Steak 48 and Prime Steak Concepts have been expanding in markets across the country in cities like Houston and Chicago. What else is on the horizon for your group and can you tell us any other cities where you’re planning to open? We are currently looking at a few other great cities in the United States including Philadelphia, Washington DC and Miami. We are just having a great time building and operating our steakhouses and are excited for what the future holds for us.

THE SEDONA FILM FESTIVAL Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty sits down with Patrick Schweiss, the Executive Director of the Sedona Film Festival. Get to know one of Northern Arizona’s most talked about events and the history behind the 25-year-long celebration of the film industry.

The Sedona International Film Festival originally started in 1994 as an off-season project of the Sedona Cultural Park, as the fund-raising arm to get the cultural park built. When the cultural park opened in 2000, and then subsequently closed in 2003 due to bankruptcy, a group formed its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit as the Sedona Film Festival so that the film festival could continue even though the cultural park didn’t. Beginning in 2004, the film festival operated as its own entity and has operated independently since then. The early years were a struggle. We spent many hours reaching out to independent filmmakers and film studios, pleading for them to submit their films. Today, filmmakers plead with us to consider their films. We have grown from a three-day weekend festival to a nine-day festival featuring more than 160 films, celebrity guests and an international reputation. Into 2012, we expanded, building our own Mary D. Fisher Theatre to enable film festival programming all year. Much of our success can be credited to the Sedona community which has embraced and engaged with the Sedona International Film Festival to not only celebrate great films, incredible creative talent and our breathtaking surroundings but to create a memorable, welcoming experience for everyone.

What is the mission of the Sedona International Film Festival? We strive to provide an enduring overall experience for filmmakers, filmgoers and the entire Sedona community. The Sedona International Film Festival is more than the incredible films we screen each year. It’s a gathering of people who love to make films, watch films and share with one another how those films impact them.

What types of films can attendees look forward to watching at the festival this year? Our incredible screening committee will select around 160 films from more than 1500 that are submitted for consideration in a range of categories from full-length features and documentaries to foreign and animated films and shorts.

What will be different about this year’s festival since it will be the silver anniversary celebrating 25 years?

What does the future look like for the Sedona International Film Festival and how do you see it evolving and changing?

We’re planning a number of events during and leading up to the festival this year. In January, we’ll screen 25 Sedona International Film Festival Audience Choice Award winners over 25 days at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. In November, we’ll celebrate with the Silver Anniversary Ball at the Enchantment Resort. And, on the 25th day of every month this year, we’ll screen the top film from 25 years ago and charge the admission price from that time.

The future is incredibly bright for the Sedona International Film Festival. Our reputation continues to expand and filmmakers consistently tell us (and others) that they’ve never been to a festival where they are treated as well or have enjoyed the overall experience more.

We are expecting an exciting lineup of celebrity guests, which will be announced as we get closer to the festival.

Every year we look to create new experiences and opportunities. We’re constantly upgrading our technology and meeting with colleagues in the industry to share ideas and best practices. Because of the overwhelming response and growing appreciation for independent films and filmmaker-and-consumer focused festivals like ours, we’re consistently adapting based on input from those who attend and from our community.

Making Arizona Better

HONOR FLIGHT AZ pays homage to our WWII and Korean War veterans by providing the support needed for them to complete a three-day journey of honor and remembrance to their memorials in Washington, D.C. at no cost to them because of their service. Their secondary mission is to educate our youth about the impact of WWII and the Korean War and the freedoms our nation enjoys because of the service of the WWII and Korean Veterans. RLCF greeted and welcomed home veterans from their trip at Phoenix Sky Harbor. PINS 4 PAWS is an annual charity event hosted by Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR). FAR is a cage-free, adoption-guaranteed rescue located in the heart of Scottsdale. FAR is dedicated to saving lives through the rescue, care and adoption of homeless cats and dogs. RLSIR participated in its annual bowling tournament enjoying BBQ, networking and a costume contest.

Together, All Things Are Possible TAYLOR HOUSE RIDE is an annual charity road ride whose proceeds go towards providing safe, low-cost lodging for families to stay just across the street from their loved ones being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center. RLCF manned 3 water stations and RLSIR Flagstaff Branch Manager Dylan Kennedy participated in the 90 mile ride.

CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT is winning the fight for charities. Approximately 24 years ago Celebrity Fight Night came to life through the vision of Jimmy Walker, who thought it would be possible to raise money for local charities through a celebrity charity event. RLCF was able to contribute towards the cause and Janis Lyon and Scott Lyon spoke on behalf of Dennis Lyon and Rusty Lyon at the Founders Club Dinner. RANCHO FELIZ creates an even exchange, one that enhances the lives of everyone involved. By feeding others, we nourish our own souls, ultimately making the world a better place. RLCF made their first trip to Agua Prieta, MX to visit Rancho Feliz, their sponsor children and families and dsitribute food. The RLSIR Pinnacle Peak office held a Cinco de Mayo celebration dedicated to fundraising for Rancho Feliz and auctioned off an original drawing from one of the students.
