This project is about the complex of a Library and a Cultural center to be used by the public in the municipality of Ilioupoli, an area of Athens lacking this kind of facilities. Aiming to be a landmark of the area, the complex consists of: two distinct volumes (the Library and the Cultural center), a platform collecting the surrounding movement and channeling it into both buildings, a standing two-floor wall enclosing the complex and constituting continuity of the urban facade and a landscaped outdoor space. The siting of each volume is about integration into the urban web, orientation and intentional seclusion. Emphasis is given on the interior design of the stairways, the facades, the direct external linking and some specific sites, such as the amphitheater, the metallic shelter/canopy and the bridge. The course formally lasts two semesters: the first comprising primarily of the synthesis and the second deepening further into the construction process and the structural details in order to illustrate the complete architectural character to the building.

U rban H i deaway on th e b a n k of th e r i ver Ki f i ssos
The subject of this project was urban design in the region of Acharnai, an undeveloped suburb of Attica, which has both urban and rural character. The site of the project is not only in direct conjunction with the mountain of Parnitha, but it is also traversed by the river of Kifissos. The masterplan was generated by transferring the city’s and the river’s engraving into the site. The river became our main point of interest and, as a result, the starting point of our synthetic thinking. For this reason, we attempted to intervene mildly in its banks so as to bring the users into direct contact with the water element. We also designed an environmental center along the river in order to raise the environmental awareness of residents. From the environmental center, which is situated at the lowest altitude, an ascending path begins, which gradually leads to the main square of the settlement, on either side of which the residences are located. This path is reinforced by green volumes and platforms used as standing areas. At the top of the hill there is also a cultural center and a school. At the back side of the hill, we planned farmland, alongside farming workshops and a semi-sheltered market, where crops and local products can be available. In the rural landscape of the area, the project’s objective was to design a settlement with a clear environmental character.

The tra nsfo rm ati on of a n ol d Rock Q u a r r y i nto a Pu b l i c S p a ce
This project is a proposition for the hill of Tourkovounia, one of the seven hills of Athens, which constitutes a cultural landscape either as a landmark or as fragmentary remains of the historical background of the city. The project aims to analyze and highlight the complex character of the hill, which is a unique element of the Athenian terrain. The hill of Tourkovounia was used as a quarry during the 20th century, named Lato, resulting in its present imperfect image. Our proposal does not cause further harm to the landscape, but it exploits the existing relief and consists of two basic design gestures: a linear platform, consisting of standing spaces, and a circular downhill to a large hole that has remained as a residue of the former use of the area as a quarry. In our proposal, this hole is shaped as a welcoming hug for the visitors. A circular path descends gradually to the lowest point of the hole, forming some standing points along the perimeter. We designed an amphitheater that hosts cultural uses, such as events, performances, concerts, cinema, oriented towards the huge rock. From the lower level of the hole begins a ramp that gradually rises to an open space, where you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the city. The other key element of the whole composition is the linear platform. Moving towards the platform, one can find standing spaces while coming across the element of water in this desert landscape. The platform leads to a second hole, full of plants this time, and the visitor can observe it from above. The different way of experiencing the two holes (immersion - observation) points out the contrast between natural and artificial environment. The one-of-a-kind lunar scenery of Lato, is enhanced with suiting materials of iron, concrete and wood.

A seasi de recre ati on a l b u i l d i n g i n Kavou r i
This project is about a small recreational building in Kavouri, a coastal area near Athens. Αlthough Kavouri is primarily a residential area, the wider region attracts a lot of swimmers in the summer, therefore the building required to be functional and usable all year long. The building consists of : a lending - library, an exhibition space, a cafe, outdoor beach showers and changing rooms, as well as an observation point. It was essential for me to create a building closely connected with the sharply sloped terrain and the distinctive shoreline. Αs a result, the main building’s volume emerged from the accentuated shoreline’s protrusion. Αlso the building became road’s continuation, thus gathering the movement inside it.

Anal ysi s o f tra d i ti on a l b u i l d i n g s a n d com p l ex i e s
The course aims to analyze the remarkable traditional Greek village of Dimitsana in mountainous Arcadia, with the ultimate goal of recognizing its particular architecture both morphologically and structurally. The analysis of the settlement began with the collection of geographic, historical and cultural elements. Subsequently, we carried out the depiction of traditional complexes, buildings, public places, private yards, movements and architectural elements. Then, we analyzed the recorded material morphologically and constructively. As a result, architectural typologies were conducted and the local building system and its evolution over time was studied. Through this process, conclusions were drawn regarding both the architectural character of the settlement and the intangible element defined by the genius loci of this place. The course was held together with the simultaneous analysis of the neighboring villages, all part of a general exhibition of traditional mountainous Arcadia.

WESTWORLD co nte m po rar y e nter ta i n m ent a n d th em e p a r ks
The cause of this research paper derives from the American tv series “Westworld”. The series narrates the story of a futuristic theme park, while raising questions about the course of contemporary entertainment. Following the line from critical theory to the actual space of theme parks, and having as a useful tool the visual material of the series, we investigated the mechanism of entertainment which creates spaces that allow people to escape from reality. The research focuses on the means used by such spaces to offer escape from everyday life. Initially, we attempted to point out the basic principles on which a theme park is based, as expressed in the Westworld series, and relate them to four relevant, but distinct moments of critical theory: the work of representation, the degradation of myth by Barthes, Baudrillard’s theory of “hyper-reality”, and finally the nature of entertainment in today’s “Society of the Spectacle”. Then, having theoretically investigated the space, we are going through a quick historical review of the theme parks, in order to find out their origins. Afterwards, we try to clarify their features, through the Westworld theme park as an accomplished and real place. Finally, we examine how the thematic identity of such spaces is fabricated, following a reasoning that starts from memory and reaches the patterns and myths of a culture.

P I G EO N B U S T E R S
This project was part of an academic course in applied arts and explored the usage of multiple media, materials, and new representation technologies as a means to intervene in the Architecture school’s public space. Our proposal was an intervention in the simulacrum of the School, instead of in its physical space, using virtual reality’s capabilities and experimenting with new technologies. The proposal is based on a shared experience among the school’s students, and more specifically on their aversion to …pigeons droppings! This aversion was the trigger to design a game where students could finally have their revenge! In a digital replica of the school’s courtyard, we placed kits with tools for the destruction of the pigeons. Each kit was different depending on the level to be played. We also designed a flyer handed to the participants before the battle that included the instructions and rules to the game, the map of the terrain, as well as a detailed profile of the “enemy”.

C O O K 8 : The Hole
The subject of the competition was the design of an interior dining space of 24 - 30 m2 for 8 people. Its aim was the formulation of new ideas on the design of a meeting-place for people, on the occasion of preparation and consumption of food as means of socialisation. The proposal raises an objection to the constant acceleration of the metropolitan reality. Along with the accelerating food production and consumption, the design industry constantly develops functional solutions for the ideal kitchen, while food emerges as a key component of a lifestyle. The proposal focuses on the random encounter on the occasion of food consumption. The functional parts of the kitchen are dispersed across the four edges of the room, defining the boundaries of the room and producing four meeting places. The area that is formed by those subspaces, is considered as a void where the floor recedes, and a soft cavity is created. “8 people dag a hole on the table and rolled down to it.” The hole is a deviation from the straight passage that is marked by the two openings to the city, and reels people to take a break. Thus, within the cavity, exists an alternate timeline, where time is stretched and dedicated to communication. The absence of the table draws the attention to the bodies that sit facing each other, enhancing the theatricality of the dinner. Inside the cavity, the satiated gourmant is confronted with the sequence of swallowing, digestion and defecation.
