DESIGN GUIDE POET MAGAZINE

Introduction

Poet magazine is a poetry and art magazine. It features local, international, classic, and modern poems as well as art that go with the poetry and general theme of the magazine. The magazine is intended to attract the attention of the young generations of poetry readers. This is why I chose to make this magazine a modern looking one. I wanted it to be modern, edgy, futuristic, clean, yet give the classic art of poetry homage thus the use of black and white. Starting out the magazine, I want to make it look like a newspaper, yet I don’t want it to be boring. I want the page to remind my reader that they are reading a newspaper yet they are actually reading poetry. The art I will feature will be colorful and generally contemporary; this will give an edge to my magazine. I have decided that my target audience is between the ages of 20 to 35, A class men and women. I will start choosing ads that mirror my magazine style and feature products that important for my readers.

Typography For my magazine masthead, I used VERANDA FONT in bold, I used it in 70pts and made it grow to 200%.

For my blurbs, I used ROCKWELL, I also used it for most of my articles headlines. This is a font that will be constant throughout all my issues, so is the masthead. For the content of the magazine, I used the classic Times New Roman, this is because it is a clean modern yet classic font, it is not playful and will not divert my reader’s attention away from the content. The tone used in the magazine will be rather serious yet young. You get a feeling of poetry reading but it is not aimed to be boring.

Colors The main colors I will choose are basic black and white. This gives me flexibility to change things up using the magazine’s art it upcoming issues depending on the topics featured. On the cover I will use a black and white photograph and put a touch of color in a frame surrounding my cover story’s blurb. Although, my designers do not like white space, I prefer it. It will give my readers space to rest their eyes. Is will always be a constant theme in the magazine. I will have many white framed pictures, framing a painting always adds value to it, I will use the same concept in my magazine. The interior of the magazine, there will be both bright colors and black and white photography. This is a must. I want both themes to be existent.
