the

Guest Experience

The guest experience is paramount, with service second to none and yacht staff on hand to provide assistance, day or night. The yacht exudes space and light, showcasing the beautifully finished interiors and drawing the eye constantly to the splendour of its setting. Guests have every opportunity to enjoy the yacht’s unique features. Rooms and suites take luxury to another level: light-filled accommodation opening on to amazing vistas, some with private balcony or terrace. The hotel’s public spaces help to create an unforgettable experience, making the best use of the waterfront location with opportunities to enjoy the 360-degree views from its restaurants, bars and top deck. Although all are generously sized and many have private balconies, entry-level rooms have the same features that you might find in any bland chain hotel: beige walls, nondescript artwork and cramped bathrooms (which contain just showers, not baths). There are some flourish.

Although all are generously sized and many have private balconies, entry-level rooms have the same features that you might find in any bland chain hotel: beige walls, nondescript artwork and cramped bathrooms (which contain just showers, not baths). There are some flourishes, however. An in-room Sony tablet provides access to the hotel’s facilities and local shops, the floors in those small bathrooms are heated, and toiletries are by Molton Brown. Suites, meanwhile, feature Jacuzzis and saunas. There are other distractions on board, too. Standing by the hotel’s gilded lobby, the Sundowner bar has impressive views of Canary Wharf, the O2 and the Emirates Air Line, and its terrace should prove popular come summer. Land’s End restaurant will serve Mediterranean food, and, in tribute to its Finnish origins, the boat’s gym features a 12-man sauna. It’s all pleasant enough, but the lack of nautical touches seems a missed opportunity to promote the hotel’s unique attributes and unusual setting. The hotel plans to launch an “Under the Sea” afternoon tea, featuring octopus-shaped cakes and the like, but other points of distinction are few.. A superyacht Sunborn London may be, but I was disappointed that its owner, Turku-based property development company Sunborn, hasn’t chosen to capitalise on this. Guests who are hoping to buy into a sense of oligarch-worthy luxury for one night only will be disappointed, with the vessel feeling more like a tired cruise ship than a play-

ground for the super-rich.

Naturally, service is second to none and yacht staff are on hand to provide assistance, day or night. Reception staff are always available and you can request concierge help with taxi, theatre and restaurant bookings as well as advice on visiting local attractions. Secure parking is available close by at the Royal Victoria car park and Excel Undercroft car park. Imagine a luxury berth on a glamorous yacht hotel in the very heart of London’s Docklands. A stay aboard Sunborn London presents visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience: the privacy and exclusivity of an ocean-going yacht combined with the quality and comfort of a top-class hotel. Guests can relax and enjoy a first-class experience every step of the way. Rooms and suites are immaculately prepared, staff are discreet and attentive, and services are tailored to suit individual needs.

A stay at Sunborn London not only makes it easy to access Docklands-based business and conference facilities but also offers guests the opportunity to explore an area with a rich cultural heritage. A soaring cable car ride to Greenwich Peninsula puts a world of attractions in easy reach. The National Maritime Museum and Cutty Sark at Greenwich tell a compelling story of Britain’s sea-faring traditions, while the nearby Royal Observatory offers a chance for all of us to explore the mysteries of the universe at London’s only planetarium. If you’d rather appreciate old masters than go stargazing, though, a trip to the Queen’s House, designed by Inigo Jones in the 17th century, is highly recommended. The O2 Arena is not only home to the world’s most popular music venue, it also features a bowling alley, cinema and restaurants, and makes for a fun-packed day or evening out.

Named in celebration of Victoria Dock’s original identity, the Land’s End restaurant serves the finest food in surroundings to match your mood. Executive Head Chef, Pawel Motzek, makes creative use of the best ingredients to provide signature dishes that draw from the best of British with Asian and Mediterranean influences. That may be because, despite its unconventional infrastructure, Sunborn London is a business hotel at heart. Adjacent to the ExCel exhibition centre and by London City Airport, the property caters to business travellers, with a large auditorium at its core, meeting and event spaces throughout, and the ship’s wheelhouse converted into a private function room. Although all are generously sized and many have private balconies, entry-level rooms have the same features that you might find in any bland chain hotel: beige walls, nondescript artwork and cramped bathrooms (which contain just showers, not baths)

Land’s End restaurant caters for every mood from casual buffet breakfast to quick-fire business lunch and after-dark fine dining. The intimate cedar and brass surroundings coupled with elegant lighting create a perfect backdrop for sampling the international gourmet menu, while the adjoining Sundown lounge bar is a smart choice for pre-dinner drinks. Why not give your private party the superyacht treatment, by booking exclusive use of the fabulous top-deck Sky Bar? And in that respect Sunborn London seems to have got things right. Rates for standard rooms are expected to reach about £400 a night at peak conference times – in line with prices charged by London’s most lauded luxury hotels – with management saying they expect to be completely booked out during those periods. There are some flourishes, however. An in-room Sony tablet provides access to the hotel’s facilities and local shops, the floors in those small bathrooms are heated, and toiletries are by Molton Brown. Location ExCel between conferences can look desolate, but don’t panic: it’s a short walk to the Emirates AirLine cable car (a spectacular link to the 02 arena and a Jubilee Line station); five minutes from Newham’s popular summer ‘beach’ and watersports; a stroll from the Siemens Crystal with its free exhibition and great café; and a DLR ride from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Royal Greenwich and the Tower of London.

Service Bright and helpful young staff, from all corners of Europe, brought extra coffee, turned our keycards the right way up and suggested jolly things to do. You can order room service, concierge and housekeeping on Sony tablets provided in all rooms. The Elemis Spa has two treatment rooms and an outdoor relaxation deck. Fitness nuts get complimentary access to the Crowne Plaza gym ashore. The new Sunday Movie Club charges £34 for meal, movie and popcorn.

Rooms Size matters in this city, where space is at a premium, and the 136 rooms (they don’t call them cabins) are spacious and light. All have at least a coffee-table-sized porthole and the executive rooms have little terraces with water views and enough room for two chairs. Décor is bland but beds are firm, pillows feather-filled, showers excellent and even the standard rooms have Lavazza coffee machines, 42” TVs, Sony tablets, hairdryers and irons. The Junior Suites are like small flats and the two Executive Suites have hot tub baths, private saunas, sitting rooms and whopping great private decks for wild partying.
