State’s Medical College, Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) at Phriebagie, Kohima, could soon become operational as it has received ‘Letter of Intent’ (LOI) from the National Medical Council (NMC)’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) even as it readies to start the academic year 2023-24 by June. State health and family welfare (H&FW) minister, P Paiwang Konyak, announced this during a press conference at NIMSR conference hall, here on

Wednesday, a day after the LoI for 100 MBBS seats during academic year 202324 was sent to the Dean/ Principal of NIMSR.

Konyak said Nagaland would be reciprocating with an acceptance letter within a week’s time to pave way for the Letter of Permission, without which admissions could not be initiated. forts, Konyak was said this was a step towards fulfilling the burning desire of “our leaders” both in the past and present.

According to experts, India has achieved the replacement level of fertility but the population will grow due to momentum phenomenon. According to the UNFPA, the size of elderly population will nearly double to touch 192 million by 2030, largely in southern and western states.

“By 2050, every fifth Indian will be an elderly person, hence planning for this segment also deserves equal attention. The health and economic security of the elderly will need to gain primacy,” the UNFPA said.

Wojnar, the UNFPA India representative and the country director for Bhutan, said, “India’s 1.4 billion people must be seen as 1.4 billion opportunities.”

Wojnar said population anxieties have seeped into large portions of the general public in India but population numbers should not trigger anxiety or create alarm. “Instead, they should be seen as a symbol of progress, development, and aspirations if individual rights and choices are being upheld,” she said Wojnar said that ensuring gender equality, empowerment and advancing greater bodily autonomy for women and girls are the key determinants for a sustainable future. Individual rights and choices should be respected, and all should be able to decide when to have children, if any, and how many, she said.

Wojnar said global experience has shown that family planning targets can lead to gender-based discrimination and other harmful practices. With close to 50 per cent of its population below the age of 25, India has a ti me-bound opportunity to benefit from the demographic dividend, she added. India’s demographic dividend can be further secured by incorporating the impact of mega trends such as climate change, urbanization, migration and ageing into policy initiatives, she said.

(NPN): Alleging that some cadres and functionaries of “various Naga nationalist groups” were demanding money from members of the business community at Mokokchung town, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has directed its members not to entertain “such unwanted elements”.

In a press release, MCCI president Tsukti Longkumer stated that multiple groups/factions have made the demands during the last few days.

MCCI reiterated that collection of donations, taxation or any form of transaction was not permissible by law. It stated that coercing or victimizing its members would not be tolerated. The chamber said that members of the business community under its ambits would not entertain them whatsoever.

“Mokokchung town is the most peaceful major urban centre in Nagaland as of today and this hard-earned peace is too dear to us to be trampled on by some devious elements,” MCCI president said.

Further, MCCI has asked those groups trying to extort from the business community of Mokokchung town “to immediately cease and desist.”

The chamber also directed its members to immediately report to MCCI office of movements of any suspected extortionists in the market.

MCCI cautioned that any member of the business community entertaining such unwanted elements by ignoring its call would be doing so at their own risk.
