PRIME LAND WITH RCC BUILDING

MUMBAI, FEB 1 (PTI): The Sensex logged its biggest single-day plunge in more than a decade on Saturday after the Union Budget failed to live up to market expectations of growthboosting measures and fiscal discipline. The benchmarks, which started on a shaky note, tanked soon after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pegged the fiscal deficit at 3.8 per cent for the current fiscal, compared to the earlier target of 3.3 per cent of GDP.

Presenting the Union Budget for 2020-21 in Parliament, Sitharaman also proposed lower income tax slabs for those foregoing various exemptions, and removed dividend distribution tax on companies, effectively shifting the tax burden to the recipients.

Nosediving nearly 1,275 points from the day’s high, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 987.96 points or 2.43 per cent lower at 39,735.53. This was the benchmark’s biggest drop since October 24, 2008, when it had plummeted 1,070.63 points, and the fourth biggest fall overall.

On similar lines, the 50-share NSE Nifty plunged 300.25 points or 2.51 per cent to close at 11,661.85. Investor wealth, meaNirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget 2020-21 in the Lok Sabha, in New Delhi, Saturday. (PTI) sured in terms of value of all listed shares on BSE, plunged by Rs 3,46,256.76 crore to reach Rs 1,53,04,724.97 crore.

Since the last Budget presentation in July 2019, the Sensex has gained 222.14 points or 0.56 per cent, while the Nifty slumped 149.30 points or 1.26 per cent.

Analysts said income tax slab rejigs stoked fears of declining inflows in taxsaving investment avenues, while the proposed transfer of dividend distribution tax to investors added to the negative sentiment.

“The lack of major growth boosting measures in itself is negative for the equity market. The new income tax regime would also be negative for tax exempt equity savings schemes. Recasting of dividend taxation norms also seem to be on the balance negative for most domestic equity investors. Overall, the budget seem to be negative for the equity market,” said Sujan Hajra, Chief Economist and Executive Director, Anand Rathi Shares & Stock Brokers.

ITC was the top laggard in the Sensex pack, tanking 6.97 per cent, after the Budget hiked the excise duty on cigarettes.

L&T, HDFC, SBI, ONGC, ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank also lost up to 5.98 per cent.

On the other hand, TCS rallied 4.13 per cent, followed by HUL, Nestle India, Tech Mahindra and Infosys.

In her second Budget presentation, the finance minister said certain government securities will be open for foreign investors, adding that the Centre plans

to increase investment limit for FPIs in corporate bonds from 9 per cent to 15 per cent.

Abhinav Gupta, President, Capital Market, Share India Securities, said, “We are extremely disappointed with budget. No significant announcement for industry or consumers. Name sake changes in income tax slabs only to create political mileage that may not lead to any significant changes in growth prospects in near term.

“The FM could have made several key initiatives to spur investment and domestic consumption to address the pain points of the economy. While this budget could have focused on capital creation for nationals as well.”

Sectorally, BSE realty index plunged 7.82 per cent, followed by capital goods, industrials, finance, bankex and metal. IT and teck ended with gains of up to 1.41 per cent.

“DDT removal is good as it increases dividends received in the hands of the taxpayer. However, such receipts now are taxable in their hands. Those above 20 per cent tax slab will now face more tax on their dividend income,” said Archit Gupta, Founder, and CEO, ClearTax. WASHINGTON, FEB 1 (PTI): The Republican Party-controlled US Senate on Friday narrowly rejected the opposition Democrats’ motion to call new witnesses and documents for the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump.

As a result, the Senate is expected to acquit Trump of the charges early next week. He is scheduled to deliver his third State of the Union Address on February 4. The move to invite new witnesses was defeated by 51 to 49 votes.

In the 100-member Senate, the Republican Party has 53 seats and the Democrats 47. Two of the Republican Senators, Mitt Romney and Susan Collins, sided with the Democrats in this vote to call former White House national security advisor John Bolton and other Trump aides to testify.

The Democrats need 67 votes to convict and remove Trump from the White House.

“The vote represented a major victory for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Trump, both of whom have been calling for Republicans to reject the motion and move toward ending the trial,” Politico said. The House, wherein the Democrats enjoy a majority had impeached Trump on two counts of misuse of power and obstruction to the Congress.

The Senate started the impeachment trial last week. “The Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats keep chanting “fairness”, when they put on the most unfair Witch Hunt in the history of the U.S. Congress. They had 17 Witnesses, we were allowed ZERO, and no lawyers. They didn’t do their job, had no case. The Dems are scamming America!” Trump said in a tweet moments before the voting on move to call new witnesses. “Democrats = 17 Witnesses. Republicans = 0 Witnesses,” Trump tweeted after the vote justifying the Senate vote against the move to call new witnesses.

“The vote Friday represented a major victory for Republican leadership,” The Wall Street Journal said. According to the Journal, the vote on whether to convict or acquit Trump may not take place until next week, likely on Wednesday.

There was “no need” for the Senate to re-open the investigation which the House Democratic majority chose to conclude and which the managers themselves continue to describe as overwhelming and beyond any doubt, Senate Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell said.

“Never in Senate history has this body paused an impeachment trial to pursue additional witnesses with unresolved questions of executive privilege that would require protracted litigation,” he said.

“We have no interest in establishing such a new precedent, particularly for individuals whom the House expressly chose not to pursue,” McConnell told reporters.

“We knew this was an uphill fight,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters.

“We’re not in the majority; we have a president who strikes fear in the hearts of Republicans,” he added. “To not allow a witness, a document--no witnesses, no documents--in an impeachment trial is a perfidy. It’s a grand tragedy, one of the worst tragedies that the Senate has ever overcome. America will remember this day, unfortunately, where the Senate did not live up to its responsibilities, where the Senate turned away from truth and went along with a sham trial,” Schumer said. “If the president is acquitted with no witnesses, no documents, the acquittal will have no value because Americans will know that this trial was not a real trial. It had no witnesses, no documents, is a tragedy on a very large scale,” the Senate Minority Leader alleged.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described it as a “sad day” for America.

“The Senate Republicans’ vote against calling witnesses and compelling documents in the impeachment proceedings makes them accomplices to the President’s cover-up,” she said. “The President was impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He is impeached forever. There can be no acquittal without a trial. And there is no trial without witnesses, documents and evidence,” she added.

“It is a sad day for America to see Senator McConnell require the Chief Justice of the United States to preside over a vote which rejected our nation’s judicial norms, precedents and institutions to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law,” Pelosi said. Donald Trump (File)

LONDON, FEB 1 (PTI): The UK’s divorce from the European Union has come into force over three years after the landmark Brexit vote, making it the first country to exit the economic bloc after 47 years of membership, triggering celebrations across the country to mark the historic moment.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed the historic moment as the dawn of a new era for the UK in his address to the nation just before Brexit. Brexit came into force at 2300 GMT on Friday. “This is the moment when the dawn breaks and the curtain goes up on a new act in our great national drama,” said Johnson, in his video message which promised hope and opportunity to every part of the United Kingdom.

“It is not just about some legal extrication. It is potentially a moment of real national renewal and change. This is the dawn of a new era in which we no longer accept that your life chances – your family’s life chances – should depend on which part of the country you grow up in,” he said.

A party at Parliament Square and a light display count down at Downing Street marked the historic moment, while elsewhere in the country there were some anti-Brexit rallies.

“Let us celebrate tonight as we have never done before. This is the greatest moment in the modern history of our great nation,” said Nigel Farage, the leader of the Brexit party and someone who has campaigned incessantly for the UK to leave the EU.

Brexit parties were also held in pubs and social clubs across the UK as the country counted down to the official departure, with lower key anti-Brexit events in some parts of the country which Celebrations mark UK’s exit from EU Brexit supporters celebrate during a rally outside Stormont in Belfast, Northern Ireland as Britain left the European Union on Friday. (AP/PTI) had voted to remain in the referendum. Parts of Scotland, which had voted to remain in the EU in the June 2016 referendum, held candlelight vigils to express its opposition to being dragged out of the bloc along with the rest of the UK. It has revived calls for another independence referendum to be able to vote on its union with Britain.

Police in London arrested four men and also charged one man with criminal damage and being drunk and disorderly, while one arrest was made in Glasgow.

While there will be little change instantly as the UK and the EU enter into a preagreed period of transition from Saturday until the end of December, the process of complete extrication from the now 27-member economic bloc will begin right away. Johnson was keen to highlight his vision of a friendly negotiation process for both sides to thrash out a new trading relationship as the beginning of a “new era of friendly cooperation” between the EU and an energetic Britain.

Celebrating the UK’s “recaptured sovereignty” to deliver the changes the June 2016 referendum vote signified, he noted: “Whether that is by controlling immigration or creating freeports or liberating our fishing industry or doing free trade deals… is the right and healthy and democratic thing to do.” Maldives rejoins Commonwealth as UK leaves EU LONDON, FEB 1 (PTI): Maldives was officially readmitted to the Commonwealth on Saturday more than three years after the Indian Ocean archipelago nation quit the organisation over criticism of its human rights record, taking the count of the bloc’s membership countries back to 54.

The island nation’s rejoining came just over an hour after the United Kingdom left the European Union following 47 years of membership.

The island nation had quit the Commonwealth in October 2016 after being threatened with suspension over its human rights record and lack of progress on democratic reform.

It submitted a request to rejoin in December 2018, when President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih wrote to Commonwealth SecretaryGeneral Patricia Scotland.

“The reform process underway in Maldives aligns with the values and principles of the Commonwealth and we encourage the nation to continue on this path,” said Baroness Scotland, as she welcomed the country and its people back to the fold. “Commonwealth members were pleased to note these developments and are happy once again to count Maldives as a member of the family. Together we will support Maldives to realise its ambitions,” she said.

1st DEATH ANNIVERSARY Lt. N. Tautung Phom Died on 02/02/2019 CAIRO, FEB 1 (AP): Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas threatened to cut security ties with both Israel and the US on Saturday, in a lengthy speech delivered at an Arab League meeting in Egypt’s capital that denounced a White House plan for ending the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.

The US plan would grant the Palestinians limited self-rule in parts of the occupied West Bank, while allowing Israel to annex all its settlements there and keep nearly all of east Jerusalem.

The summit of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo was requested by the Palestinians, who responded angrily to the American proposal.

Abbas said that he told Israel and the US that “there will be no relations with them, including the security ties” following the deal that Palestinians say heavily favours Israel.

There was no immediate comment from US or Israeli officials.

The Palestinian leader said that he’d refused to take US President Donald Trump’s phone calls and messages “because I know that he would use that to say he consulted us.”

“I will never accept this solution,” Abbas said. “I will not have it recorded in my history that I have sold Jerusalem.” He said the Palestinians remain committed to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a state with its capital in east Jerusalem.

Abbas said that the Palestinians wouldn’t accept the US as a sole mediator in any negotiations with Israel. He said they would go to the United Nations Security Council and other world and regional organisations to “explain our position.”

The Arab League’s head, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, said the proposal revealed a “sharp turn” in the longstanding US foreign policy regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“This turn does not help achieve peace and a just solution,” he declared. Aboul-Gheit said that the Palestinians reject the proposal. He called for the two sides, the Israelis and the Palestinians, to negotiate to reach a “satisfactory solution for both of them.”

President Trump unveiled the long-awaited proposal Tuesday in Washington. It would allow Israel to annex all its West Bank settlements — which the Palestinians and most of the international community view as illegal — as well as the Jordan Valley, which accounts for roughly a fourth of the West Bank.

In return, the Palestinians would be granted statehood in Gaza, scattered chunks of the West Bank and some neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Jerusalem, all linked together by a new network of roads, bridges and tunnels. Israel would control the state’s borders and airspace and maintain overall security authority. Critics of the plan say this would rob Palestinian statehood of any meaning.

The plan would abolish the right of return for Palestinian refugees displaced by the 1948 war and their descendants, a key Palestinian demand. WASHINGTON, FEB 1 (PTI): Advising its citizens to reconsider visiting Pakistan due to terrorism, the US on Friday issued the highest level travel alert for the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa along with the Line of Control.

The Level 4 of US travel advisory means asking citizens not to travel to the provinces of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) along with the LoC. The rest of the areas in Pakistan continues to remain on Level 3 of the travel alert.

“Do not travel to the India-Pakistan border. Militant groups are known to operate in the area. India and Pakistan maintain a strong military presence on both sides of the border,” the State Department said.

Indian and Pakistani military forces periodically exchange gunfire and artillery fire across the LoC, the advisory said. “Do not travel to KPK province, which includes the former FATA. Active terrorist and insurgent groups routinely conduct attacks against civilians, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government offices and security forces,” the State Department said. These groups historically have not discriminated between government officials and civilians. Assassination and kidnapping attempts are common, including the targeting of polio eradication teams, it said.

According to the State Department, terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Pakistan. A local history of terrorism and ongoing ideological aspirations of violence by extremist elements have led to indiscriminate attacks on civilian as well as local military and police targets, it said. Former K-pop idol Seungri has been indicted for prostitution and habitual gambling.

This comes a year after the allegations first came to light in a sexual abuse scandal that rocked South Korea’s entertainment industry. Seungri has denied all allegations.

The indictment is the most recent event in the Burning Sun scandal, which revealed the scale of a sexual abuse scandal in the Gangnam district. More than 350 people were arrested in the operation.

Several other K-pop stars have been embroiled in the scandal, with singersongwriter Jung Joon Young admitting to filming himself having sex and sharing the footage without his partners’ consent. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, avoided spending time on remand at a hearing at Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on January 30, after being charged with organising prostitution, habitual gambling, and violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Seungri’s involvement in the case was as a partowner and public relations liaison of a nightclub in Seoul’s exclusive Gangnam district.

He added he was concerned he would cause “further damage to people around me”, and he would be “criticised by the public” besides “being treated as a nation’s enemy during the investigation”.

The Oscar winner is also irked that no women are represented in the directing category at the award event, which will be staged at the Royal Albert Hall in London, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“People should be impatient... and they should keep demanding change. It will come, incrementally, but it will only come if people demand it. And keep demanding it. 50 Cent has been given a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Helping Fiddy – aka Curtis Jackson – to celebrate the moment was Dr Dre and Eminem, the latter delivering an emotive speech to mark the moment.

Honouring the ‘In Da Club’ rapper, Eminem said: “Of all the things I don’t remember about 2002, I have a very clear memory of the first time I met 50. One of the first things I noticed about 50 was his presence because it just kind of felt like, he’s gonna be a star… It just seemed like he was the whole package.

“Dre and me knew that if something worked on us, it was gonna work on the rest of the world and I’m glad we trusted our instincts…I just wanna say man, I’m here today because this is not only a business partner to me, it’s one of the best friends I’ve ever known in the world.”

Eminem continued: “I would say that it’s much more fun to be his friend than it is to be his enemy because this guy is fucking relentless. And he won’t stop. And the same way that he’s relentless in his battles, he’s also relentless in his business. 50 Cent joined by Eminem as he gets a star on the Walk of Fame “He’s an artist, an entrepreneur, an actor, a director, a producer…he can juggle, he’s great at Scrabble. He pretty much does it all. We’re always up for a game of Scrabble, guys.”

Eminem also thanked 50 for helping him with a “lot of hard times.”

Eventually, 50 appeared on the stage and took aim at Evanescence who famously beat him to the Best New Artist Grammy in 2004.

“You got the largest debut hip hop album [but] you don’t got no best new artist trophy. The best new artist they gave that shit to Evanescence. Can you find fucking Evanescence? I ain’t seen Evanescence since that night. Since that night they gave them the trophy.”

After the jokes, the rapper looked emotional and thanked everyone for attending.

Earlier this week, 50 Cent said that the death of basketball great Kobe Bryant has made him reevaluate his his history of feuding.

Writing on Instagram, the rapper posted a video of him embracing the late sportsman after a game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks.

“i feel like i have to achieve what i want in life now after this,” he said. “i have to focus, i’m not arguing with anyone anymore i ll [sic] deal with it another way if there’s a problem.”

MOU NT MAUNGANUI , FEB 1 (IANS): A 5-0 whitewash will be on the mind when Virat Kohli and his boys take on New Zealand in the final T20I at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday. For the hosts, it will be all about playing for pride after they lost the third and fourth T20I in the Super Over, having dominated majority of the game in both the encounters. India skipper Kohli has often spoken about the need to keep the winning momentum going when it comes to the shortest format of the game and that is exactly what his team has been doing against the Kiwis in this 5-match series.

While Mohammed Shami stole the show in the third T20I with a brilliant last over - defending the nine runs that the Kiwis needed with Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor at the crease - it was Shardul Thakur who stole the show in Friday’s encounter, defending just seven runs and picking two wickets.

The Kiwis clearly choked under pressure as they lost as many as four wickets in the 20th over in Wellington. More importantly, stand-in skipper Tim Southee once again failed to defend New Zealand’s score in the Super Over after failing against the might of Rohit Sharma in the third T20I. The biggest positive for the Indian from the game was how the team fought it out and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat despite resting senior campaigners Rohit Sharma, Shami and Ravindra Jadeja. In fact, Kohli had made it clear after sealing the series in Seddon Park that he would try the reserves in the last two games with an eye on the World T20 in Australia at the end of the year.

And even after Friday’s win, he praised the efforts of the three youngsters in Sanju Samson, Navdeep Saini and Washington Sundar. “I thought Sanju was fearless. This was his chance to take things away. I think Washy has played a lot, and Saini rushed the batsmen,” he said after the game. While India’s young guns stood up to the challenge, the Kiwis will want their experienced campaigners to come good and ensure that they don’t hand India a series whitewash. India has persevered while New Zealand has failed to take advantage of opportunities presented. NEW DEL HI, FEB 1 (PTI): The government on Saturday allocated Rs 2826.92 crore to the sports budget for the next financial year, which is an increase of a mere Rs 50 crore from the revised estimates of 2019-20.

The government gave a substantial hike of Rs 312.42 crore to its flagship Khelo India programme by allocating Rs 890.42 crore as compared to the 2019-20 revised amount of Rs 578 crore, which meant that most of the other heads got reduced allocation in an Olympic year.

The highest reduction was seen in National Sports Federations with Rs 245.00 crore being allocated in the union budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Rs 55 crore less than the revised Rs 300.85 for 2019-20.

As far as incentives for sportspersons are concerned, the budget has proposed to slash the amount from Rs 111 crore to Rs 70 crore. The budget for National Sports Development Fund also got reduced to Rs 50.00 from the earlier Rs 77.15 crore. The government also reduced the allocation to Sports Authority of India (SAI) from the revised Rs 615 crore to Rs 500 crore. The SAI is the nodal organisation to manage nationals camps, provide infrastructure, equipment and other logistics to the country’s sportspersons.

The allocation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games-SAI stadia renovation was also slashed to Rs 75 crore from Rs 96 crore last year. National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons will continue to get the same amount of Rs 2 crore as earlier, while, at Rs 50 crore, there was also no change in the allocation for the enhancement of sports facilities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Laxmi Bai National Institute of Physical Education will, however, get Rs 55 crore, Rs 5 crore more than the last budget.

In the budget for 2019- 20, Rs 2216.92 was allocated for sports but it was later revised to 2776.92. Govt allocates Rs 2826.92 crore to sports budget

Aizawl, Feb 1 (IANS): Real Kashmir defeated former I-League champions Aizawl FC 2-0 at the JLN Stadium on Saturday, thanks to some gutsy defensive work and all-round display from Mason Robertson, who was rightly adjudged the Hero of the Match.

Real Kashmir scored their first goal early in the 16th minute through Higginbotham while their second goal came from Mason Robertson in the 82nd minute.

With this win, Real Kashmir FC have now moved up to fifth with 12 points from 8 games while Aizawl FC stay rooted to the tenth spot with 8 points from 9 games. The first half began with visitors Real Kashmir FC pressing hard for a lead. The English duo I-league: Robertson helps Real Kashmir conquer Aizawl 2-0 of Kallum Higginbotham and Mason Robertson ensured that the Aizawl defence was on their toes right from the first minute. A few attempts for an early lead by the snow leopards went in vain thanks to the alert defending by the Aizawl defenders and their goalkeeper. However, as the game progressed, the visitors tightened the screw and their efforts soon yielded results, when a fantastic pass from Mason Roberston to Higginbotham, saw the latter make no mistakes in finding the back of the net in the 16th minute.

Aizawl did try making a comeback through a counter-attack in the very next minute, but lack of creativity inside the final third kept them away from finding that much-needed equaliser. The game thereafter saw both sides making an attempt to score but to no avail.

Aizawl tried to make a comeback in the final few minutes of the first half but some good glovework from Phurba Lachenpa of Real Kashmir FC saw the visitors maintain their 1-0 lead as the first 45 minutes of the game came to an end. The second half began with the visitors again pressing hard to consolidate their lead, but were not able to convert any opportunity, while hosts Aizawl FC who looked scattered tried helplessly to find a muchneeded equaliser. Aizawl FC have now gone winless in six consecutive matches. Pa ris , Feb 1 (IANS): Paris Saint-Germain’s Angel Di Maria has said that while he has played with some of the best footballers in the business, he reserved the highest praise for his countryman Lionel Messi.

“It was a dream to have the possibility to play with [Wayne] Rooney, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, Cristiano [Ronaldo], Leo [Messi]... they were players that I used on the PlayStation and I would never have imagined I’d get to play with them,” Di Maria told TyC Sports.

“I used to watch them and then to have the opportunity to play with them was really nice. “Leo is the best of the four, Cristiano is a monster and Neymar is simply a joy for football. He’s Brazilian and when he plays all he does is have fun. Ibra is crazy, a total character. On the pitch he might seem like a bad guy but he is awesome, a really good guy. I got along with him very well when he was here. “Rooney is a quiet guy. I never thought he would be as strong as he is. With all the great players I have played with, it’s hard to choose. But if I had to pick one, it would be Leo.”

Di Maria feels that his clubmate Kylian Mbappe will become one of the best in the world if he carries on the way he has so far in his career. “Mbappe is a little animal,” Di Maria said. “He has a great mentality. He’s a good boy, always calm, and plays at a high level. Even with everything he has done, he can do more. If he continues with the mentality he has, I know that he will win the Ballon d’Or.” Buen os Aires , Feb 1 (IANS): Former Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago has suffered a new injury setback while playing for Argentinian first division club Velez Sarsfield.

Inside the temple where Kobe Bryant is ‘immortalised’

Los An geles, Feb 1 (IANS): For thousands of fans of the late Kobe Bryant, the legend of one of the best players in NBA history will be “immortalised” in what was his temple for 20 seasons: the Staples Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers.

“It hurts all of us, even though we are not part of his family. But we carry him in our hearts... This man has already been immortalised,” Mauricio Ayala, a fan who claims to have seen Bryant score most of his points, has said.

A few meters from Ayala, a couple of about 60 years of age is wrapped in a hug that lasts about a minute, while other fans silently watch the emotional scene, reports Efe news.

Much happens in one of the Lakers stadium entrances, minutes before the team’s first game after the death of one of the icons of the franchise.

Some asked for the stadium to be officially named the “Kobe Bryant Center”, or something similar that would pay tribute to the NBA icon who died last Sunday in a helicopter accident with one of his daughters, Gianna, and seven other people.

“Gigi”, is also remembered in T-shirts, dedications, photographs and even in the panels that the Lakers have installed in the stadium before the game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The silence is broken every few minutes when followers sing “Kobe, Kobe!” or another song in

Chennaiyin roared into a three-goal lead at half-time, thanks to a brace from Rafael Crivellaro (39th, 45th) and another goal from Nerijus Valskis (45th).

But a hat-trick from Bartholomew Ogbeche (48th, 65th, 76th), the first of the season, threatened to bring Kerala Blasters back into the match. A brace from Chhangte (59th, 80th) and another Valskis goal (90th) sealed the result in favour of the away side.

The victory saw Chennaiyin climb to fifth spot, just two points behind fourthplaced Odisha FC, while Kerala Blasters’ hopes of finishing in the top four virtu- ally ended, with them placed eighth now.

Though Kerala started the first half well, they could not fashion any real opening. Chennaiyin too were a bit passive as the match was locked down in the midfield. However, Chennaiyin came to life in spectacular fashion just as the first half was draw- ing to a close.

In the 39th minute, Chennaiyin took the lead after Kerala goalkeeper TP Rehenesh passed the ball straight to Crivellaro who sweetly tucked it home.

Things got worse for ISL: Chennaiyin beat Kerala Blasters 6-3 Kerala in the 45th minute when Valskis combined beautifully with Crivellaro before receiving the return pass and lashed a finish home.

A minute later, Kerala were caught napping again. Anirudh Thapa sent a through ball forward for Valskis who was offside. But the Lithu- anian did not interfere with play and Crivellaro took advantage, surged towards goal and finished with aplomb to make it 3-0 in no time.

The setbacks sparked a reaction from Kerala in the second half with Ogbeche leading them. Three minutes after resumption, the Nigerian got on the end of a hopeful cross into the box from Jessel Carneiro and turned it in past goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. However, Chennaiyin restored their advantage after yet another howler from the Kerala defence. Abdul Hakku’s intended pass for Rehenesh was intercepted by Valskis who set up Chhangte for Chennaiyin’s fourth goal. Ogbeche had other ideas and scored a quickfire brace to make it 4-3. In the 65th minute, he beat Kaith with a clinical shot from outside the box before heading in Halicharan Narzary’s cross in the 76th minute.

When one thought Chennaiyin had lost the plot, Chhangte settled their nerves with a fine strike from long range in the 80th minute before Valskis helped himself to a late second goal to seal a goal glut. Chennaiyin roared into a three-goal lead at half-time, thanks to a brace from Rafael Crivellaro (39th, 45th) and another goal from Nerijus Valskis (45th).(Source- ISL Twitter)

Melbourne , Feb 1 (IANS): American 14th seed Sofia Kenin on Saturday beat two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza in the final of the 2020 Australian Open to win her maiden title at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. In a match that lasted two hours and three minutes, Kenin came from a game down to beat Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

This was Kenin’s first Grand Slam final and with this she will rise to a career high ranking of No.7. She is the youngest to win the title since Maria Sharapova in 2008.

The new WTA ranking makes her the highest ranked American and also the youngest from her country to enter the top 10 since Serena Williams. She is also the only singles player from her country apart from Serena to have won the Australian Open since 2002.

The third set was much closer than what the score suggests. Both players held their serves and Muguruza raced to a 40-0 lead at 2-2 on Kenin’s serve. However the 21-year-old fought back and managed to hold. She took the momentum to the next game where she broke Muguruza and increased her lead to 4-2. Another hold took her to 5-2 and thus a break away from the championship. Muguruza was leading 40-15 but Kenin managed to fight back to deuce. A double fault from Muguruza in the end won Kenin the title.

Mugur uza had a tough draw, beating Elina Svitolina, Kiki Bertens, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Simona Halep on her way to the final. The match against Halep was a hard fought two-set win and the run seemed to have taken a toll on her as she had needed to be checked by the physio during the final on Saturday. This was Kenin’s first Grand Slam final and with this she will rise to a career high ranking of No.7. New Delhi , Feb 1 (PTI): Flamboyant India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was on Saturday ruled out of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand after failing to regain full match fitness, the BCCI said.

The decision was taken after the 26-year-old consulted spinal surgeon James Allibone in the United Kingdom. “Team India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. He travelled to London and was accompanied by NCA Head Physio Ashish Kaushik for a review by spinal surgeon Dr James Allibone,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement. “Hardik will be under rehab at the National Cricket Academy until he regains full match fitness,” he added.

Pandya underwent a successful surgery in October last year to treat an acute lower-back injury and has remained out of action since. He last played for India during the T20 International series against South Africa, taking part in the third match in Bengaluru. He has not played Test cricket since the Southampton match against England in September 2018. According to BCCI sources, Pandya is also unlikely to be available for the three-match home ODI series against South Africa from March 12-18. The number five seed defeated Zverev 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(4) in a nail-biting contest lasting three hours and 42 minutes at Rod Laver Arena, becoming the first Austrian to reach the Australian Open final, reports Efe news.

His 22-year-old German opponent started off impressively breaking his adversary and racing away to a lead, but the latter fought back to draw level at 3-3 before rains came down to suspend play on Friday.

The number seven seed resumed after the break with greater force, winning 10 points straight, going on to lead 3-5 and closing the set on Thiem’s serve.

The second set saw the two players trade breaks to keep up with one another.

Soon Thiem, 26, found himself serving for the set at 5-4, where he saved two break points before clinching it with an ace.

The next set started evenly at 1-1 before he sped ahead and came close to making it 4-1, but Zverev dug in and fought back and went 4-5, before Thiem saved two set points on serve. The third set pushed into a tie-breaker, where the older player was more dominant and polished it off with a backhand cross-court winner, concluding a set lasting 82 minutes.

The fourth set also went neck-to-neck, with Zverev showing all the resilience to stay alive in the match and Thiem determined to wrap things up, as it once again dragged into a tie-break.

Zverev let his nerves get the better of him at that stage as he committed a double fault at 0/1, and the 26-year-old took full advantage of the lapse in his opponent’s momentum to secure a 5/3 lead, before going on to seal the match with a forehand winner.

Throughout the match, there was little to separate the two players in terms of skill and gameplay, but it was Thiem who managed to win the important points and that is what made the difference in the end.

He hit 43 winners and fired 10 aces, while committing 40 unforced errors to Zverev’s 42 winners, 15 aces and 33 unforced errors.

“It was an unreal match, two tie-breaks, so tough and so close,” Thiem said in an on-court interview, after securing a place in what will be his third Grand Slam final on Sunday.

He finished runners-up to world number one Rafael Nadal, from Spain, at the French Open in 2018 and 2019.

“I have been twice in the Roland Garros final, twice facing Rafa, and now I am facing Djokovic, he is the ‘King of Australia’, winning seven titles here,” said Thiem.

“I will try my best and do everything I can to win.”

Djokovic, who has 16 Grand Slam titles to his name, has a 6-4 edge over Thiem in ATP head-to-head series. Dominic Thiem A1 Tsungiki and RCR Football club register win Aus Open final: Theim to clash with Djokovic
