Dimapur celebrates 70th Republic Day

NEW DELHI, JAN 26 (PTI): Welcoming the Supreme Court decision to uphold the validity of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), Union minister Arun Jaitley Friday warned that defaulters cannot get away for long. “The upholding of the provisions that bar the defaulting promoters from bidding is both ethical and proper - otherwise the defaulter will continue to manage the company with only the banks taking a haircut,” he said in a tweet. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the IBC saying “the defaulters’ paradise is lost” and the economy’s rightful position has been regained. “The Supreme Court judgement upholding the validity of the IBC is a welcome decision. The Bank defaulters cannot get away for long,” he said. With regard to the controversial provision of section 29A of the IBC, which dealt with the rights of erstwhile promoters to participate in the recovery process of a corporate debtor, the court said that “a resolution applicant has no vested right for consideration or approval of its resolution plan”.

KOHIMA, JAN 26 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya, in his 70th Republic Day speech, Saturday reiterated the “unequivocal view” of his government that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), 2016 was not applicable to Nagaland. The normally packed Secretariat Plaza on Saturday was sparsely filled due to the boycott call given by student bodies opposing the CAB 2016, It may be recalled that the CAB, 2016 passed in Lok Sabha on January 8, 2019 seeks to provide Indian citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis have come to India as refugees/immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Speaking on the occasion at the Nagaland Secretariat Plaza ground, the governor said that Nagaland stood protected under the provisions of Article 371 (A) of Constitution of India and the Inner Line Permit mechanism as per Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 which was reaffirmed as Clause 16 of the 16-Point Agreement.

Acharya, however, said that the state government has appealed to the Centre to have wider consultations with all north eastern states to ensure that the rights of the indigenous people were fully protected. He also said that the state government has decided to refer the Bill to the Standing Committee on Article 371 (A) under the Nagaland Legislative Assembly to examine the issues in its entirety. On Naga political issue, the governor said the top priority of the state government was for final settlement and has committed to play the role of an active facilitator in the ongoing political negotiations between the Government of India and the Naga political groups. Governor affirmed that

People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government’s commitment towards facilitating an early resolution of the “Indo-Naga” political issue through a negotiated agreement that honours the unique history and rights of the Nagas. Even as the quest for a final settlement continues, Acharya said the state government was committed to ensure good governance and development in the state. On law and order front, governor said the state was by and large peaceful as the police and administration have taken remarkable steps in strengthening law enforcement mechanism and security of the citizens. He also highlighted the achievements such as launching of Emergency Response Support System (ERSS),

setting up of women police stations in all the districts headquarters and receiving the award for ‘Best Performing Small State’ in the category of ‘Law & Order’ by the India Today State of State’s Survey 2018. PDA decision on CAB unforgivable: NPCC DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has described the boycott of Republic Day celebrations across Nagaland as “a slap in the face” for both People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government in the state and BJP government at the centre for “disregarding the voices of people” against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). NPCC through its communication department said the northeast region was in turmoil due to blatant attitude of BJP to push through CAB, which is now pending in Rajya Sabha. Congress, however, stated that the PDA government has been “caught in a self defeating situation” with its “feeble” explanation that defied the “very logic of our elected members’ ability to protect the interest of our people.” NPCC said the PDA cabinet decision on CAB was therefore “unforgivable”. It added that any sensible PDA legislator must resign in protest if they had any concern left for the people. Congress party affirmed its stand that CAB be scrapped in total since it was “highly polarising and dangerous” for small state like Nagaland where unabated influx of migrants especially in Dimapur and other foothill areas threatened the demog-

raphy of state. It mentioned that AGP in Assam has parted ways with BJP due to CAB, NPP was threatening to “kick out” BJP in Meghalaya, MNF in Mizoram was all out against CAB and the BJP government in Manipur has passed resolution urging exemption of Manipur from CAB implementation. Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, however, stated that the “knee jerk reaction” of the PDA government and the “deafening silence” of BJP and its legislators was “an added insult to the collective conscience of the people.” Alleging that PDA government has “totally lost the confidence of the people as is evident from empty grounds during Republic Day celebrations”, the Congress reiterated its stand with the people of Nagaland in “totally opposing the communal CAB”, adding that it would not allow BJP to ride roughshod over the interest of the people. Further, the state Congress extend its solidarity with the NSF and ENSF and all their federating units for being in the forefront against CAB. It also appealed to all right thinking citizens cutting across political party affiliations to voice out in total unison and prevent “this dangerous communal bill”.

Low turnout at R-Day celebrations across Nagaland Odisha CM’s sister declines Padma Shri Correspondent

KOHIMA, JAN 26 (NPN): School students across the state were conspicuous by their absence during the 70th Republic Day celebration in response to the boycott call by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) against passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. In most of the district, the turn-out was also very low as the gallery seats and chairs meant for the public were empty. This Republic Day celebration witnessed the lowest turnout as school students, who normally participate in the parade, drill displays etc. refrained from doing so. Talking to Nagaland Post, NSF president Kesosul Christopher Ltu and general secretary Imtiyapang Imsong expressed happiness that the boy-

cott call not only received positive response from students’ body but the public as well. Ltu said such positive response was a clear sign to show the resentment towards the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. “This message has to reach the Central government to remind them that are more to come if they still consider us to be sec-

ond class citizen of India,” he added. Commenting on Governor’s R-Day speech, Ltu said the state government had on several occasion clarified on Article 371(A). However, Governor being the head of the state should not sing to the tune of politicians, but speak out his mind and truth. Imtiyapang Imsong informed that reports from

across the state confirmed that none of the schools or students’ body in Nagaland took part in the R-Day celebrations. He thanked the general public and all the students’ unions for their cooperation and further appealed all to continue to support the federation, assuring that NSF “will not stop until the demand is fulfilled.”

BHUBANESWAR/NEW DELHI, JAN 26 (PTI): Eminent writer Gita Mehta, who is Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s elder sister, on Saturday declined to accept the Padma Shri award, saying its timing could be “misconstrued” in an election year. “I am deeply honoured that the Government of India should think me worthy of a Padma Shri but with great regret I feel I must decline as there is a general election looming and the timing of the award might be misconstrued, causing embarrassment both to the Government and myself, which I would much regret,” Mehta, who is the sibling of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and daughter of former CM Biju Patnaik, said in a statement from New York. Mehta’s declining of the Padma award, however, triggered a row in the state

that the whole episode showed the close links between the ruling BJD and the BJP. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik side-stepped a question about her refusal to accept the honour but congratulated all those from Odisha who have been chosen for the award. Gita Mehta (File) “I congratulate all the with the BJP saying her ac- Odias who got the Padma tion was “not appropriate” award,” he told mediaperand the Congress claiming sons here.

IMPHAL/Shillong/ Agartala/Itanagar, Jan 26: North east state of India Saturday celebrated 70th Republic Day amidst calls of boycott from student bodies, civil organisations to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 and underground groups. In Manipur, the Republic Day celebration was largely peaceful except the explosion of an IED in Imphal in the afternoon. The IED, suspected to have been planted by insurgents, went off on the roadside near BRTF Officers’ Club premises at Lamphel in Imphal West district, around 12.50 pm. However, no casualty was reported. Except the blast, no other violent incident was reported during Republic Day celebrations which

were held in Imphal and other parts of the state amid the shutdowns and boycotts calls given by various insurgent groups. Besides the rebel sponsored strikes, prominent civil society organisations (CSOs) and student bodies had called for a boycott of Republic Day celebrations and related events in Manipur to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. The main function was held in Imphal’s Kangla fort where state Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla took the salute from police, military and other contingents. A slim public participation was witnessed in the state level celebration function which was held under tight security measures. State chief minister N Biren Singh, opposition leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, ministers, MLAs

and top officials of state police, civil and central security forces were present. The Governor took salute from 73 marching contingents including nine band contingents and various school contingents led by assistant director Thaimei Gaipuiril Kabui of Manipur Police Training College (MPTC). Speaking at the programme, chief minister N Biren Singh reiterated his government’s stand against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. “The state government will not remain silent if there are any elements in the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) that will cause threat to the indigenous people of Manipur,” he said. The chief minister appealed to the people to thoroughly study the contents of the bill before resorting to any forms of

protests. He said that if Centre indulged in any act against the interest of the people of the state, legislators in the ruling coalition government would be the first to take appropriate decision against it. In Meghalaya, Governor Tathagata Roy appealed to all the citizens of the State to hold steadfastly to the ideals and principles of democracy as the scenic state celebrated Republic Day. “Being fully aware that violence is never the way out for any problem, we should always resort to solve problems through meaningful dialogue and peaceful engagement,” he said after unfurling the Indian flag and taking the salute at a ceremonial parade here. Noting that law and order situation in the State is by and large peaceful,

Roy said, “The overall internal security situation has also significantly improved over the last one year. We must now take this opportunity and redouble our efforts to ensure durable peace and sustained development in the state. He said all measures are being taken to ensure safety and security for all the citizens, with particular emphasis on combating crimes against women and children and human trafficking. Instructions have been issued for expeditious investigation into cases relating to these matters, the Governor said. In Mizoram, Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan on Saturday addressed an almost-empty ground here on the 70th Republic Day, due to a statewide boycott call given by an umbrella organisation against the Citizenship

(Amendment) Bill. No member from the general public attended the function, police said adding that only ministers, legislators and top officials were present. The boycott call was given by the NGO Coordination Committee, an organisation of civil society groups and student bodies. Six armed contingents participated in the Republic Day parade, officials said. Up to 30 contingents traditionally take part in the annual event. In other district headquarters, the deputy commissioners unfurled the tricolour in the absence of senior officials and public, as was the case in subdivisional and block headquarters. However, the Republic Day celebrations passed off peacefully without any untoward incident, despite

the presence of placardcarrying protesters near the venues, police said. In Tripura, Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki on Saturday urged the people to help make Tripura a model state. “The Tripura government has taken a series of steps to make Tripura a model state within the next few years. All sections of the people should support the state government’s endeavour,” the Governor said after unfurling the national flag at the ceremonial function at the Assam Rifles ground here. He said that to curb corruption and to provide transparent governance, the state government has been utilising various technologies in a large number of schemes, projects and services. Solanki said Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has also undertaken a vigorous mission to make the state a “drug free”. “During the past 10 months, 67,000 kg cannabis has been seized in different parts of the state. With the curbing of drug related activities, general crime and violence against women were also reduced to a substantial extent,” he said. “To undertake a white revolution in the state, the Chief Minister has already announced to provide 5,000 cows to 10,000 families for their economic empowerment and also to make availability of milk in the state.” The Governor also spoke about the state government’s plan to implement 10 per cent reservation for women in the police department.

In Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Brigadier B.D. Mishra (Retd.) appealed to the people of the state to cooperate and offer their land willingly whenever required in public interest. After unfurling the national flag and taking the salute at the parade at the Indira Gandhi Park here, he emphasised on road and air connectivity and urged the citizens to think and act in the larger interest of the people, discarding individual benefits and to allow developmental projects to take off without raising objections Mishra also remembered the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and the valiant soldiers who guard the borders. The Governor said that the nation, despite numerous challenges, has emerged stronger and reinforced on the strength of democratic institutions and values. In his speech, Mishra also highlighted the achievements of the state government during the last one year in various fields, including education, health, agriculture and allied sectors, road connectivity, civil aviation, hydropower, water supply, sanitation, social justice, women and child development, sports, public security and law and order. “We have successfully conducted the Arunachal Transformational and Aspirational Leaders Conclave to deliberate on the issues,” he said The state government has distributed free LPG connections to 26,818 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the Governor added.

People of Assam have right on its resources: Gov Tri-colour falls off post during

Guwahati, Jan 26 (PTI): There is no place for illegal foreigners in Assam and only the indigenous people of the state have the right on its resources, Governor Jagdish Mukhi said Saturday. Hoisting the national flag on the occasion of 70th Republic Day here, Mukhi said the government was working with commitment to have a permanent solution for the illegal infiltration problem in Assam. “We are committed to build a new Assam. There is no place for any illegal immigrant here. The people of the state have all the rights on its resources and it will always remain like that,” he said. The state’s entire administrative machinery is working with its capability and dedication to prepare a correct National Register of Citizens (NRC) under the directions of the Supreme Court, Mukhi said.

Jagdish Mukhi “We will take all necessary steps to free Assam from illegal foreigners,” he added. Talking about the Assam Accord, the Governor said the Clause 6 was the soul of the pact and political rights of Assam’s indigenous people will be protected at any cost. “We are happy that Clause 6 is going to get Constitutional recognition. The Central government has formed a high-powered committee. It will submit

its report within six months after examining all aspects,” he said. However, five of the nine-member panel have declined from being part of it to protest against the Union government’s push to pass the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in parliament. Mukhi further said the Central government has decided to grant Schedule Tribe (ST) status to six communities of Moran, Muttock, Sootea, Tai-Ahom, Koch-Rajbongshi and TeaTribes recognising their “decades of struggle”. “While taking this decision, we are aware that there will be no adverse impact on the existing scheduled tribes,” he added. On the state’s law and order situation, Mukhi said some forces inimical to the interest of the country have always tried to cause harm for their own selfish reasons. “They get help from

foreign elements, who want to destabilise our country. There will be no mercy shown to them. We are committed in our resolution of a terror-free Assam. We are fully capable to suppress and control such forces,” he added. The Governor announced that the state will become open defecation free by October 2, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. “For this purpose, special emphasis has been given on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Already, 22,418 villages of 2,411 panchayats in 204 blocks in 28 districts have been declared open defecation free,” he said. Mukhi also said the state government was working for a corruption-free administration and as a result of efficiency, financial resources have increased last year with excise, transport and GST registering record income.

BD Mishra at the R-Day celebration in Itanagar, Saturday.

GUWAHATI, JAN 26 (AGENCIES): In a deeply embarrassing moment, the tri-color fell off the post as it was hoisted at the main R-Day function in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday. In a clip that has gone viral on social media, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, BD Mishra, is seen walking up the ramp to hoist the flag. Then, the jawans and the Governor tug at the flag in order to hoist it into the air. But for some Inexplicable reason, the flag snaps off the pole and lands on the ground. To his credit, though, the Governor appears unruffled by the incident and while a jawan holds the flag aloft in the air, the Governor salutes the flag while the national anthem plays in the background. The flag was re-hoisted after the incident was over. An enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

We can resolve Ayodhya dispute in 24 hours: Yogi

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said people’s “patience” on the issue of Ram temple is “fast running out” and if the Supreme Court is unable to give an early verdict on the dispute, it should “hand it over to us” and it will be resolved within 24 hours. The Chief Minister also claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win more seats in Uttar Pradesh in the coming Lok Sabha elections than it did in 2014. Asked by India TV whether he would resolve the Ayodhya issue through negotiations or by wielding the stick, Adityanath smiled and replied: “First let the court hand over the issue to us. “I will still appeal to the court to dispose of the dispute soon. On September 30, 2010, the Allahabad High Court division bench gave its verdict not on the issue of division of land but upheld the view that the Babri structure was built by demolishing a Hindu temple or memorial. The Archaeo-

Yogi Adithyanath (File) logical Survey of India, on the High Court’s orders, carried out excavations and in its report admitted that the Babri structure was built by demolishing a Hindu temple or a memorial,” he said. “By adding the title dispute unnecessarily, the Ayodhya dispute is being prolonged. We appeal to the Supreme Court to give us justice at the earliest, to the satisfaction of millions of people, so that it can become a symbol of people’s faith. But if there is unnecessary delay, institutions may lose people’s trust,” he added. The Chief Minister said “the unnecessary delay ... is causing a crisis so far as

people’s patience and trust are concerned.” “I want to say that the court should give its verdict soon, and if it is unable to do so, it should hand over the issue to us. We will resolve the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute within 24 hours. We won’t take 25 hours,” he said. Asked why the Centre had not brought an ordinance, Adityanath said the matter was sub judice. “Parliament cannot discuss matters that are sub judice. We are leaving it to the court. Had the court given justice based on the 1994 affidavit filed by the then central government, a good message could have gone to the country. It would have been a nice example. But this unnecessary delay is causing a situation where people’s patience is fast running out.” He said the question was not of gain or loss in elections but the faith of countrymen. Adityanath said the Congress was at the root of this problem and it did not want it to be solved.

TRAI order: Parab threatens blackout of cable TV from Feb 1 Mumbai, Jan 25 (PTI): Opposing the new tariff order by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Shiv Sena legislator Anil Parab Friday threatened to blackout cable TV channels from February 1. He alleged that the TRAI decision was aimed at pushing the cable operators out of business, and demanded another three months time for the implementation of the order. Speaking to reporters here, Parab, who is also the president of the Cable Operators and Distributors Association, said the TRAI in its order has asked the cable operators to comply with its new tariff rule by February 1 or face blackout. “The cable operators have condemned this directive. This decision will not be beneficial to consumers, cable operators and distributors,” he said. The cable operators are showing 500 channels in Rs 200-350, he said. The TRAI has said that consumers should be able to choose the channels they want to watch and cable operators should not sell big bouquets to them. “If the bouquets are

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna issued notices to the Centre, the ministries of Electronics and Information Technology and Communications on the petition field by a human rights body People’s Union for Civil Liberties, which alleged that the law is “misused/abused rampantly” by the government. The petition, filed through lawyer Sanjay Parikh, has urged the court to declare certain provisions under the Indian Telegraph Act and the Information Technology Act, which grant power of surveillance to the government, as violative of the Constitution. The petition claimed that “the data that is available publicly shows rampant use of powers under these provisions.”

(PTI): Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, a militantturned-soldier who laid down his life fighting a group of terrorists in Shopian in Kashmir in November, was awarded the Ashoka Chakra by President Ram Nath Kovind Saturday. The award -- India’s highest peacetime gallantry honour -- was received by Wani’s wife and mother at the Republic Day celebrations at Rajpath. Wani is the first Kashmiri to be conferred the Ashoka Chakra. On November 25, 38year-old Wani, hailing from Cheki Ashmuji in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, lost his life in a counterterror operation against six terrorists in Hirapur village near Batgund in Shopian. Under intense hail of bullets from the terrorists, he eliminated the ‘district commander’ of the Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) and one foreign terrorist in a daring display of raw courage, Army officials said. In the ensuing gunfight, he was hit multiple times including on his head. He also injured another terrorist before succumbing to his grievous wounds, they said. According to the citation, Wani single-handedly

the Shopian operation and injured a third one despite receiving serious injuries. “In an unparalleled saga of sacrifice, Lance Naik Wani prevented escape of the terrorists from the target house and made a huge contribution in neutralisation of six hardcore terrorists, in the process laying down his life upholding the highest tradition of the Indian Army,” it said. One of his colleagues, who wished not to be named, said he always volunteered for challenging missions, displaying great courage under adverse conditions and exposing himself to grave danger on numerous occasions in the line of duty. Wani was a recipient of the Sena Medal for gallantry twice in 2007 and 2018. Dehradun, Jan 25 (PTI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat Friday downplayed the nine deliveries by candlelight at a government hospital recently, saying it was an emergency. “Candles had to be lit to perform the deliveries in an emergency. Do you want to say they should not have been lit?” Rawat snapped when asked about the incident. Nine deliveries were conducted using candlelight and torches at the Government Doon Medical College Hospital here due to power outage for several hours from 8 pm Tuesday. The chief minister said Doon Hospital has all the facilities. Due to a technical fault in the generator on a day when the sole electrician of the hospital was on leave, the power could not be restored, forcing doctors to conduct deliveries by candlelight. Power was restored at the hospital over 14 hours later at 10 am on Wednesday. Chief medical superintendent of the hospital’s women wing, Meenakshi Joshi, said, “The inverter was not taking the load and the electrician was not available.”

kept small, then people will have to shell out over Rs 450 to watch the most common 32 channels,” Parab said. In rural areas, people who now spend Rs 200, will have to pay Rs 450 for the same channels, he said. The Sena leader said as per the new rules, of the total earnings, 80 per cent will go to the broadcasters, 10 per cent to multiple system operators and remaining to cable operators. “Therefore, this seems to be a ploy to throw cable operators out of business. Neither the consumers nor cable operators are happy with this decision. Is this game being played for broadcasters?” he asked. “If TV channels blackout from February 1, cable operators should not be held responsible. The government should extend the deadline and come out with a new suitable tariff plan. “If not, only free-toair channels will be seen from February 1, because we have not received the channels’ request from consumers,” he said and demanded an extension of 3 months to implement TRAI order.

Former Kerala police chief slams Nambi Narayanan T h i ruva na nthapuram, Jan 26 (IANS): A day after the government announced Padma Bhushan for former ISRO scientist S. Nambi Narayanan, T.P. Senkumar, a former state police chief who was tipped to probe spy charges involving Narayanan, slammed the decision, saying the award came at a time when a Supreme Court committee was looking into the ISRO spy case. “If this is the yardstick for a Padma award, then people like Govinda Chami, Ameerul Islam (both accused in the killing of two women) and Mariam Rasheeda (an accused along with Narayanan in the ISRO spy case), would get a Padma award next year. The government should have waited,” said Senkumar. “Narayanan is a below average scientist... ask any ISRO scientist who is still working there about his contributions,” said Senkumar. The ISRO spy case surfaced in 1994 when Narayanan along with another top official of ISRO, two Maldivian women and a businessman was arrested

S Nambi Narayanan (File) on espionage charges. The CBI cleared Narayanan in 1995 and since then he has been fighting a legal battle against Siby Mathews, the then Inspector General of Police who had probed the case, and two other police officers. Last year the Supreme Court directed the Kerala government to give him compensation of Rs 50 lakh for his travails. Senkumar was asked by the then E.K. Nayanar government (1996-2001) to relook into the ISRO spy case, but it failed to materialize as by then, the apex court had cleared Narayanan. Responding to Senkumar’s, remarks, Narayanan

said that in his petition for compensation, Senkumar was named as one of the parties. “What Senkumar said today is immaterial and irrelevant and does not require to be answered. What he has said is probably because he wants to mislead the Supreme Court. I do not know if he has an agenda. He is speaking foolish things,” said Narayanan. Senkumar was removed as the state police chief, the day current Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assumed office in may 2016. After a long-drawn court battle, the Supreme Court directed that he be reinstated in May 2017. He retired from service in June 2017.

‘Modi, Shah rattled by Priyanka’s entry into politics’ New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI): The Congress said Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah are rattled by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into politics but the party is not bothered and asserted that she will have a nationwide impact when she speaks. Congress senior spokesperson Anand Sharma accused Prime Minister Modi of being in perpetual path of confrontation with the Congress party and attacking the party leadership relentlessly. He, however, said the Congress party is not bothered and cautioned that those acting at their behest will be held accountable after the change of government. “Why is the prime minister Modi and Amit Shah rattled by Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into politics. If it was not relevant and was not going to make a big impact on the people, then the BJP need not even react. “What they have said, I do not attribute any wisdom to most of the BJP leaders. If you look at their bench strength, it is pathetic and I can only say that I cannot dignify such irrelevant observation with an informed response. I reject it with the

Anand Sharma (File) contempt that it deserves,” he said on BJP leaders attacking Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Sharma also said that the attack of BJP leaders, including prime minister Modi, has never stopped as they have constantly attacked the party leadership. He also said that Modi has been rattled ever since Rahul Gandhi’s appointment as Congress president and is now rattled over Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being made AICC general secretary. “If Mr Modi considers himself popular, he should not be rattled. Instead, he should take stock of his party and stop his leaders from making statements... prime minister and Amit Shah should state clearly whether he endorses such cheap statements by BJP leaders,” he asked on statements made by certain BJP

leaders against Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. On whether Priyanka Gandhi would play a bigger role in the party, he said, her role has been defined by the Congress President himself. “I think she has been given a specific task and that is important. But, when political leaders campaign in today’s time, like Rahul Gandhi speaking in Bhubaneswar, the impact will be nationwide. So wherever Priyanka Gandhi-ji will speak, it will have a national impact,” he said. “When have they not attacked Sonia Gandhi? When did the Prime minister even have a small ceasefire during Holi, Diwali or Republic Day and Independence Day and did not attack Rahul Gandhi. “Even when two armies

are fighting, they will have a brief truce, but this Prime Minister and the BJP, they have not had a truce with us. He has been on a perpetual path of confrontation. So, we are not bothered, we are just cautioning that those who will be doing anything at their behest, they should be worried. In a few months’ times, accountability will be enforced,” the former union minister said. Asked whether Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would contest Lok Sabha elections and from where, the senior Congress leader said she would decide on this and the Congress president has already stated his view on this issue. To a question on Shiv Sena praising Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her role in reviving the Congress, Sharma claimed the party was alreayd on the revival path. “Are we not on a revival path already? Modi Ji and Amit Shah Ji never stopped telling the country and the world that look at the map of India, when they were giving a call for a ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’ and one should now look at the map of India. So, we are already on the revival path. Now, we are on the victory path,” he claimed.

Rahul gets front seat this Republic Day Gautam Khaitan remanded BJP’s ‘Operation Lotus’ still on; to two day’s ED-custody Cong MLA offered gift: K’taka CM

New Delhi, Jan 26 (AGENCIES): After a row over his seating arrangement at the Republic Day last year, Congress president Rahul Gandhi was seen sitting in the front row along with Union minister Nitin Gadkari at the 70th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. While Gandhi got a front row seat, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad was seen seated in the second row behind Gandhi, unlike last year when both of them were made to sit

in the sixth row. Gandhi, who had taken over as the new Congress chief last year from his mother Sonia Gandhi, was designated the sixth row seat during the 2018 Republic Day celebrations, prompting angry protest from his party which accused the government of setting aside traditions and indulging in “cheap politics”. The Congress sources maintained that their party presidents had always been seated in the front row at

the Republic Day Parade celebrations at Rajpath. Gandhi earlier took to Twitter to wish the countrymen on Republic Day. “Best wishes to the countrymen on Republic Day,” he said. Senior party leader P Chidambaram also wished the citizens on the occasion. “Happy Republic Day to all. Republic Day marks the birth of the Constitution of India. Celebrating the Constitution is a joy. Saving the Constitution is a duty,” he tweeted.

New Delhi, Jan 26 (IANS): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested lawyer Gautam Khaitan, a co-accused in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case, in a fresh money laundering case, agency officials said on Saturday. He was produced before a duty magistrate on Saturday, who remnaded him to ED custody till Janaury 28. The arrest comes a week after the Income Tax Department raided Khaitan’s offices and various other properties in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). It is learned that the Department has gathered evidence against the lawyer for allegedly receiving kickbacks in other defence deals, besides AgustaWestland, during the UPA tenure. The ED said that the lawyer had been “controlling” the modus operandi and was responsible for routing the money, misusing his connections and clients, including the ones inherited from his father, to launder

the money with the use of a variety of accounts in Dubai, Mauritius, Singapore, Tunisia, Switzerland, the UK and India. Agency officials said the accounts included those of his undisclosed shell companies outside of India. An informed source told IANS that the ED has also found a Zambia connection of Khaitan. He is known to be close to Henry Banda, one of the three sons of former President Rupiah Banda, who is accused of abusing his authority as head of state between 2008 and 2011. Dingani Banda received 250,000 euros from IDS Tunisia, a company that laundered money in the AgustaWestland scam, the source added. Khaitan apparently helped set up trust and companies for Henry Banda in Seychelles to buy a property in Kenya. The ED as well as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named Khaitan in their separate chargesheets in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case.

Bengaluru, Jan 26 (PTI): Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Friday claimed opposition BJP was continuing its Operation Lotus to topple the JDS-Congress government and tried to lure a Congress legislator with ‘gift’. Accusing BJP and its state president B S Yeddyurappa of being behind the offer allegedly made Thursday night, he said the MLA informed him that he had rejected the gift. “Operation Lotus is on. Yesterday night also they have telephoned a Congress legislator, asking him- where to send the gift, Kumaraswamy told reporters here. The chief minister’s fresh allegation comes days after Yeedyurappa had said the BJP would not destabilise the ruling coalition. The state had remained in the grip of political unrest for several days recently with the Congress on tenterhooks to keep its numbers intact amid fears of poaching by

the BJP after two independent MLAs withdrew their support to the coalition government. In a return of resort politics, all 104 BJP MLAs had stayed in a hotel in Mumbai for some days recently while the Congress too shifted its legislators to a resort. Subsequently, the MLAs returned to the city last week. Four Congress MLAs had skipped a crucial legislature party meeting on January 18, indicating all is not well within the party. Operation Lotus is a reference to the BJP allegedly luring several opposition MLAs to resign their assembly membership and defect and win the election on the saffron party ticket later to ensure stability of its then-government headed Yeddyurappa in 2008. In his media interaction Friday, Kumarasamy, without naming anyone, said: “he (the legislator) has already informed me. The legislator has told them (BJP) that he don’t want

their gift and to leave him peacefully. It is not a small gift. From where it (gift) is coming to Yeddyurappa? As Chief Minister in 2008 he had made similar attempts- making MLAs as commodities for sale, he has continued his work, it is his addiction, what can I do for it,” he said responding to questions. Asked about the cost of the gift this time, he said, It is hard to guess, you will be surprised,” but did not elaborate. Speaking to reporters in Kolar earlier, Yeddyurappa said there was confusion within the Congress and the ruling alliance and their MLA and his party had nothing to do with it. “...let’s wait and watchwhat will happen because of their confusion within...we are not playing any game, they (Congress-JD(S) are playing the game, let’s wait and watch what will happen, he said in response to a question.

Border belligerence

T

wo incidents along the Assam-Nagaland border under Mokokchung district amplify the volatility of the situation in that stretch and confirming that any incident is enough to light the spark that could engulf the two states in another serious confrontation. There have been several incidents that had taken place in the past at the border between Mokokchung districts and adjoining districts of Assam - Jorhat Sivasagar and Charaideo. When there have been so many incidents in the past, it is not surprising that people living on both sides have become sensitive or over sensitive and resulting in quick build-up of tension. The January 24,2019 incident at Lirmen village, under Mokokchung district inflamed passions after people of the village dismantled some huts constructed within the area which the villagers claimed as theirs. The huts and some construction items belonged to workers contracted to build the Assam Police outpost. It is believed that the issue has also inflamed tensions on the other side of the border under Jorhat district. Timely intervention by the civil administration of both Mokokchung and Jorhat districts somehow brought the situation under control. This incident took place nearly six months after the July 23,2018 incident at the border between Amguri (Assam) and Tuli(Nagaland). The July 23, 2018 incident on the Amguri-Mokokchung side was precipitated by the decision made at some level by the Sivasagar district administration to establish an Assam Police outpost within the area falling under Mokokchung district. The particular area near the Nagaland Police check gate is claimed by Wamaken village. The land has been cultivated by the Wamaken villagers since time immemorial. In order to construct the proposed police outpost, the jungles, which fell within Nagaland had to be cleared. Thus while clearing the jungles, the land owners from Nagaland side, the villager of Wamekan, turned up the next day and chased the jungle clearing labourers from Assam side. According to reports , the decision to set up the police outpost was pushed by the local Amguri MLA and despite the potential threat on law and order, it got the nod from the civil administration and police. Both the incidents-July 23,2018 and January 24,2019 were related with setting up of Assam Police outposts under areas that belong to Nagas. The two incidents also clearly prove that Assam has wilfully violated the very Border Agreement it signed in 1972. The agreement clearly barred both states from opening any new police outpost. Also any shifting of police force should have the concurrence of both states and the nod from the common IGP Border. Nagaland considered the 1972 Agreement as biased against its interest and favouring Assam especially because the common IGP border in-charge of police forces of both states deployed along the border, was appointed from the Assam Police. The consequences of the flawed arrangement proved to be the main cause for the full scale offensive by Assam Police on the small Nagaland Police outpost at Merapani in 1985. Instead of trying to prevent any incident, it is very unfortunate, that Assam Police has been trying to establish outposts within Naga areas. The government of Nagaland has to take serious note of Assam’s border intransigence and take precautionary steps to discourage such acts in the larger interest of peace and harmony between the people of the two states.

DailyDevotion Look Again and Consecrate

If God so clothes the grass of the field…, will He not much more clothe you…? —Matthew 6:30 A simple statement of Jesus is always a puzzle to us because we will not be simple. How can we maintain the simplicity of Jesus so that we may understand Him? By receiving His Spirit, recognizing and relying on Him, and obeying Him as He brings us the truth of His Word, life will become amazingly simple. Jesus asks us to consider that “if God so clothes the grass of the field…” how “much more” will He clothe you, if you keep your relationship right with Him? Every time we lose ground in our fellowship with God, it is because we have disrespectfully thought that we knew better than Jesus Christ. We have allowed “the cares of this world” to enter in (Matthew 13:22), while forgetting the “much more” of our heavenly Father. “Look at the birds of the air…” (Matthew 6:26). Their function is to obey the instincts God placed within them, and God watches over them. Jesus said that if you have the right relationship with Him and will obey His Spirit within you, then God will care for your “feathers” too. “Consider the lilies of the field…” (Matthew 6:28). They grow where they are planted. Many of us refuse to grow where God plants us. Therefore, we don’t take root anywhere. Jesus said if we would obey the life of God within us, He would look after all other things. Did Jesus Christ lie to us? Are we experiencing the “much more” He promised? If we are not, it is because we are not obeying the life God has given us and have cluttered our minds with confusing thoughts and worries. How much time have we wasted asking God senseless questions while we should be absolutely free to concentrate on our service to Him? Consecration is the act of continually separating myself from everything except that which God has appointed me to do. It is not a one-time experience but an ongoing process. Am I continually separating myself and looking to God every day of my life?

Post-mortem

Can Priyanka match Modi’s oratory?

I

s Priyanka Vadra the brahmastra (the ultimate weapon) of Rahul Gandhi directed only at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or is one of the Congress president’s targets also the Samajwadi Party (SP)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) combine in Uttar Pradesh? While the BJP is obviously the Congress’s main adversary, politics in India can rarely be depicted in black and white. There are shades of grey which blur the outlines of friends and foes. There is little doubt that the Congress was miffed by the peremptory decision of the SP and the BSP to treat Uttar Pradesh as an exclusive bailiwick of their own by keeping out the Congress from their own state-level minigathbandhan by allotting the 134-year party only two seats out of 80 for the forthcoming general election. The blow of the exclusion could have been softened by a few kind words, as the SP’s Akhilesh Yadav subsequently did by expressing his “respect” for Rahul Gandhi. But the BSP’s Mayawati was unduly harsh as she has been ever since she abruptly broke off the seat-sharing talks with the Congress in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Following the uncalled for snub in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress vowed to contest all the 80 seats in the state. Priyanka Vadra’s appointment as the party’s general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh (Jyotiraditya Scindia has been chosen for the western half) may well be related to the extra effort which the Congress will have to put in to make its presence felt in a state where it hasn’t fared well for a decade. It goes without saying that the SP-BSP combine will not be too pleased with a reinvigorated Congress taking the field because there is little doubt that the Congress cadres will be greatly enthused by the formal induction of a charismatic scion of the party’s first family for whom they have

M

anagement education – Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is perhaps the most preferred professional course for the graduates. It is a common expectation of the organizations and the students that Management Schools should strive to develop the curriculum in such as way so as to meet the requirement of the hiring organizations. The business environment is unpredictable and is subject to constant change. The professionals struggle to adapt to the changes to new technology, new products, new regulations and a stiff market competition. Management schools are thus often subjected to criticism by the professionals on the fact that they (Management Schools) instead of being ahead of the changes in terms of teaching and research are just followers of the changes. Further, there are also criticisms that Management Education does not take into account the real world industry issues. Thus, how far Management education has a proper significant relevance to Managers` duties is an area which is open to question. The weakness of management education was addressed in the two reports, namely; Gordon-Howell report captioned “Higher education for business” published in 1959 and the report by Frank Pierson captioned, “The education

long been waiting. Will this stirring at the ground level induce the SPBSP combine to take a fresh look at its virtual hogging of the seats by taking 75 of them - SP 37, BSP 38, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) three and the Congress two? At the moment, the SP, the BSP and the RLD expect that they have an unbreachable support base of backward castes, jatavs and jats. Now, they will expect a revived Congress to wean away the upper castes from the BJP, thereby securing a foolproof winning caste arithmetic for the “secular” parties. But it is also possible that a three-way division of votes between the SP-BSP-RLD, the Congress and the BJP will help the latter, especially if the Muslim votes are divided between the SP-BSP-RLD and the Congress. In addition, Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that the Congress will not be playing on the back foot, which is already evident from the party’s decision to have no truck with the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, means that the claims about fielding one “secular” candidate against the BJP in each constituency will not come true in some states. As a result, the dampening effect on the talk of a national-level mahagathbandhan is easy to imagine. Priyanka Vadra’s entry, therefore, can have an unsettling effect which may not always be beneficial for the Congress in the matter of winning friends and influencing people. However, the political energy which she is likely to infuse into the Congress with her communication skills and a lively, empathetic interaction with the crowds can bolster her brother’s claims to be the Prime Minister. Already, Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has echoed DMK leader M.K. Stalin’s call for making Rahul

Gandhi the “secular” combine’s prime ministerial face. This turn of events will not please either the Trinamool Congress’s Mamata Banerjee - Kumaraswamy has said that he was misquoted about making her the PM - or the BSP’s Mayawati. While these r umbles among the secularists will please the BJP, it will also have to take note of its ally, the Shiv Sena’s observation that Priyanka Vadra’s entry into big time politics is in keeping with the achhe din (good days) which have come for the Congress ever since it won the three assembly elections in north and central India. While one Shiv Sena spokesperson reiterated the commonly articulated resemblance between Indira Gandhi and her granddaughter, another noted the “rishta” (relationship) which the NehruGandhi dynasty has had with the people of India. It is a stance which is diametrically opposite to the BJP’s constant criticism of the Congress dynastism and the supposed political and economic follies of Jawaharlal Nehru and his progenies. Since the BJP is dependent on Narendra Modi’s oratorical skills, it cannot but be wary of Priyanka Vadra’s forays in this field since she may present a kind of challenge which the BJP hasn’t faced in the last four-and-ahalf years. The BJP will also carefully watch Priyanka Vadra’s capacity to attract crowds to see whether she matches Nehru’s and Indira Gandhi’s magnetism. What the national opposition has lacked so far is a leader who can take on Modi on his own terms in the matter of eloquence and popular appeal since Rahul Gandhi, by his own admission, never quite measured up to these exacting demands. Now the scales are more evenly balanced. (IANS) Amulya Ganguli, (amulyaganguli@gmail.com)

Counter rejoinder to NPF, Peren Division

N

DPP, Peren Region is neither interested nor keen to issue rejoinders or issue press releases resulting in unnecessary paper war. However, false claims and accusation of NPF Peren Division against Honourable MLA & Advisor Shri. Namri Nchang is instigating the NDPP Peren Region to clarify senseless statements that appeared again in Nagaland Post on 23-01-2019. Terming the clarification of facts which appeared on 22-01-2019 as ‘defamatory’ by NPF Peren Division is again very immatured. 1. Once again, it is reiterated that Tening SDO (Civil) Hq. was upgraded to ADC administrative Hq. and Ahthibung EAC Hq. to SDO (Civil) Hq. by the previous DAN Government. NPF Peren Division claimed that the upgradation was at the behest and insistence of Shri. TR Zeliang to upheld the cherished dreams of the people of Tening. However, it is to be noted that Shri. TR Zeliang was elected four times from Tening constituency and elected thrice from Peren and was in the Government all throughout even to the extent of becoming a Chief Minister. He could have already taken up all these upgradation long back he was in power for many years. Therefore, the fact remains that upgradation of these administrative headquarters was taken up only after Shri. Namri Nchang was elected to NLA in 2013 due to his dynamic leadership and deep concern for the people. 2. It is to be stated that if Shri. TR Zeliang has so much concern for the people of Tening area, why could he sanction a mere Rs. 1.50 crore only for Tening-Peren road in 2017-18 when he could not repair or maintain the road after being elected from Tening Constituency from 1989 to 2004 and 2008 till date from Peren Constituency. Its a pity that NPF Peren Division still wants to defend the indefensible position of their leader who has done nothing for Tening area even if his village also falls under Tening Constituency. The present deplorable road condition of PerenTening is the living witness for all to see which even passes through the village of the Former CM Shri. TR Zeliang, the worst stretch being in his village area. 3. As for the sanction of upgradation of Tening-New Peren

road, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India accorded approval in principle vide letter No. 12031/54/2014/ NG/NH-8 dated 20th August 2018 amounting to Rs. 55.00 crore against the proposal of the present PDA Government. If NPF Peren Division have evidence of any sanction order for Peren-Tening road from Central Government for proposals sent by their Leader as claimed, a copy of the order may please be furnished. 4. As for cardamom farming under NEC, let it be made known to all sensible persons of Peren district that Rs. 4.00 crore was sanctioned for Peren District against which Shri. TR Zeliang proposed to implement the whole amount of the scheme in his village only. Therefore, accusing Shri. Namri Nchang of diverting the scheme to Nchangram village is totally incorrect. Instead, he proposed to distribute the funds to all neighboring villages in compact area for equal implementation of the scheme amongst the villagers and not diverting the fund to Nchangram village alone as stated by NPF Peren Division. This fact may not even be known to NPF leaders of Peren District on how their leader tried to concentrate a scheme in his village only. Finally, NDPP Peren Region also would like to state that Shri. Haigam Kauring, President, NPF Peren Division was once a dynamic activist against the nondevelopmental policy of Shri. TR Zeliang in the district and it is quite astonishing to see his press releases against his old time leader Shri. Namri Nchang who he himself knew is capable of bringing actual development in the district in letter and spirit instead of projects on papers alone. It is therefore, incomprehensible on how such a person can stoop so low, if not for his personal benefits and selfish gains, forgetting his genuine concern for the people of the District. NDPP Peren Region has all the documented proofs and is ready for any debate and discussion if NPF Peren Division would like to continue with the false accusations against Shri. Namri Nchang about developmental activities in the District. Ziekuidi Zeliang, President, NDPP, Peren Division

Are management schools well equipped?

of American businessman : A study of UniversityCollege programs in Business Administration” published in 1959. Both these reports mentioned that the management schools maintained a low standard of curriculum and that the management schools are not fully focused on enhancing the managerial skills of the candidates. The Management schools are often criticized for being theory based with major emphasis on developing the analytical skills of the candidates without much focus on enhancing their interpersonal or soft skills. Critics also state that management schools instead of giving importance to the issues that the industry is currently facing are confined to the limited course structure. A l t h o u g h , M BA / PGDM courseshelp the candidates to fetch a good job with a competitive compensation package even before completion of the course through campus placement, the ethical factor of these courses becomes debatable. This is justified by the fact that the hiring organizations find it difficult to retain the new joinees who after gathering few months / years of work experience leave the organization for higher compensation package. Further, most of the business schools in order to attract the candidates to take admission display the compensation package in the website that the passed out candidates got through campus placement. This

builds the greediness at the mind-set of the candidates at the very start. Again, how far the research undertaken by the Management schools have practical implications for the professionals / practitioners may be questioned. This is becauseresearch activities undertaken by the Management Schools primarily focus on scientific approach with application of statistical tools / quantitative methodology. Thus, scholars would be predominantly focusing in those research activities which is easily quantifiable and which may not be so useful for the professionals or practitioner. Another thorny issue ismanagement research is not adding much value to the practitioners / professionals. This is because the research papers get published in academic journals only and the practitioners do not have access to academic journals. They mostly refer to economic dailies and relevant business magazines. Hence the developments that are taking place in management research are confined with the academicians giving rise to huge gap between academicians and practitioners. The faculty imparting the management education needs to play a pivotal role in making the candidates understand the concepts of management and its practical application. Sadly, in India the regulatory bodies seem to dilute the Management education since the regulations do

not give much heed on the practical industry exposure of the faculties. This statement can be justified from the fact that The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Approval Process Handbook (2018 – 19) states that the minimum qualification for appointment of Assistant Professors for MBA Course in University/ Institute should be First Class or Equivalent in Master’s Degree in Business Administration with 2 years of relevant experience. Whether 2

years industry experience is sufficient for a faculty to gain the requisite level of practical experience may be questioned. It is high time Management Schools design the curriculum in such a way such that it should be able to address the current issues/problems that the industry is facing today. Fur ther, Management Schools may take remedial measures through which the research in Management may be made available to the practitioners/ professionals since cur-

rently such research papers are appearing in academic journals and the practitioners do not have access to those journals. Thiswould help the practitioners use the research findings in practical field and also increase their knowledge base. Finally, the regulatory bodies may emphasize more on industry exposure for recruiting faculties for imparting management education. Arunava Dey, Borthakur Mill Road, Ulubari, Guwahati

Reader’s Post

Some questions to India on her 70th Republic Day Sir,

India indeed has many reasons to celebrate her 70th Republic Day because she has accomplished a lot in the past 70 years of being a sovereign independent republic. Ever since 1947, she has indeed breathed the air of freedom and liberty from the suffocating clutches of foreign rule for over 200 years. But does she realize that for the same past 70 years, she has subjected others to the same suffocating foreign rule with her arrogant military power and her most unjust laws and Acts? Why is the whole so called North East India agitating and boycotting the 70th Indian republic day tomorrow? Surely, if they were really a part of India, they should also have been enthusiastically participating in India’s republic day. And why are there still draconian Acts and Regulations like the Disturbed Area Act of 1955 and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 still operating in the so called Indian north eastern states? Acts like these and others like the Assam Disturbed Area Act 1953 and the Nagaland Regulation Act 1962 have been there right from the early 1950’s to the present? Do any other states in the world suppress and oppress their own citizens with such draconian laws even while celebrating 70 years of their independence days? As for Nagaland, Nagaland is not in India, but India is presently in Nagaland by invasion and occupation. As such, while respecting India’s sovereign flag, I for one will never voluntarily celebrate India’s Republic Day in my land or salute her national flag in my land. Kaka D. Iralu

about Sümi, Rengma and Sangtam languages. “They are totally ignored and excluded as Chakhesang languages,” SVC lamented. According to SVC, there were eight villages, which speak Sümi language, and the third largest group among Chakhesang. It said there was also Rengma speaking village and Sangtam speaking village. “A comparative study of these languages may not be taken into consideration as the CPO and Research Committee had selected to study only three languages. Yet, the existence of other languages should be mentioned, if the CPO considered them to be part of Chakhesang,” SVC stated. Stating that language is one identity, SVC said it appeared that “CPO and its research committee denied their existence and identity among Chakhesang.” SVC remarked that exclusion of brothers and sisters “may not bring unity and brotherhood”, but rather create disunity among own people.

DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): Sümi Village Council (SVC) Phek while appreciating Chakhesang Public Organisaton (CPO) and its research committee for bringing out a book on Chakhesang languages has sought clarification whether the other languages apart from Chokri, Khezha- Kuzhale and Poula were considered as Chakhesang. In a press release, SVC Phek chairman, Neitelo Rhakho, said they fully understand that the outcome of the research was for better communication and to foster brotherhood among those that speak Chakhesang languages such as Chokri, Khezha-Kuzhale and Poula. “A comparative study of these three languages is well appreciated and for which we do not have any comments or complain,” SVC said. It, however, pointed out that Chakhesang does have Sümi, Rengma and Sangtam languages, adding that there was not a single word or line mentioned

DAVOS, Jan 26 (PTI): The Indian IT sector faces global headwinds like Brexit but developments around Globalisation 4.0 and 5G technology will bring growth for the industry this year, Tech Mahindra’s MD and CEO CP Gurnani said. He also flagged currency risks but added that the domestic IT sector will benefit from investments in digital. “Uncertainty and lack of clarity around the US shutdown and Brexit are risks for the IT industry. However, the IT sector is poised for future growth, with technology being the key enabler for Globalization 4.0. Technology is at the core of everything we do, be it solving the skill problem or sustainability issues,” Gurnani told PTI. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Friday backed a deal to temporarily end the record-breaking government shutdown. “While US accounts for 60 per cent of the Indian IT spend, for

Tech Mahindra, 45-46 per cent business comes from US. We also have other currencies to battle. Every currency has its own equation with the US currency and hence, it all balances out in the end. The impact of the current geopolitical issues, if any, is likely to be two to three quarters away. I would wait and watch before drawing any conclusion,” he said. Britain is set to exit the 28-member EU on March 29. But with just over two months to go, Britain is still undecided on a roadmap, which has led to uncertainties for businesses and the global economy as a

whole. Gurnani, who served as chairman of IT industry body NASSCOM in 2016-17, said the Indian IT sector is betting big on Globalization 4.0 where global trade will be shaped mainly by the use of technology. “Despite a global slowdown, India has witnessed robust growth and is poised to become the 5th largest economy in the world. Together with Asia, India has a critical role to play in Globalization 4.0, and it is important for us to sustain the momentum,” he said. According to Gartner estimates, India’s IT spending will grow by 6. 7 per cent in 2019 to USD 89 billion. Increasing spending on three segments -devices, enterprise software and IT services -- will give a major boost to IT spending levels in India in 2019, it said. “2019 will be the year of growth as the IT industry invests aggressively in digital. The future is now, and it is all about

being agile and being able to deliver better customer and citizen services. The economy is being driven by millennials that has led to a huge demand for data and data services. Using data for personalization and customization of services will hold the key,” Gurnani said. He also said Tech Mahindra is betting big on emerging technologies like 5G, the blockchain, artificial intelligence, deep machine lear ning and quantum computing and will continue to focus on strategic acquisitions to scale faster. “The future of innovation depends on the successful rollout and implementation of 5G. Networks are at the heart of accelerating digital transformation and a fully functional 5G network will deliver unprecedented productivity gains. After 18 months, 5G will take the centre-stage in the tech world and all our conversations will be about digital and 5G,” he said.

Between 2003 and 2008, the global economy grew at a faster clip, helping the export-oriented players. Capacity investment across sectors was also significant as investment cycle took off. However, the contribution in the profit to GDP is expected to inch higher in the coming days as earnings is likely to improve in coming quarters, according to analysts. “We now believe that India’s earnings growth has bottomed out and that the corporate profit to GDP ratio should expand hereon” said Gautam Duggad, head of research, Motilal Oswal Financial Servies. “Our confidence stems from the bottoming out of the asset quality cycle in PSU and Private Corporate Banks and some initial signs of green-shoots in private corporate capex”.

Mumbai, Jan 26 (Agencies): The soft patch in earnings over the last decade has resulted in steady deterioration in the corporate profit-to-GDP ratio. India’s corporate profit-to-GDP ratio for companies on the Nifty 500 index dropped to a 15-year low of 2.8 per cent in FY18 from 5.5 per cent in FY08 , according to a study by Motilal Oswal Financial Services. For all companies including those of unlisted companies, corporate profit to GDP ratio declined from 7.8 per cent to 3 per cent between FY08 and FY18. The ratio has consistently declined since 2010 and is also below the long-period average of 3.9 per cent (20032018), the study said. Profits of companies on the Nifty-500 have remained stagnant at Rs 4-4.8 trillion over the last five years, even as nominal GDP has continued to grow steadily, according to Motilal Oswal study. The study shows the corporate profit to GDP ratio doubled from 2.8 per cent

US shutdown ends after 35 days

President Donald Trump speaks in the Rose Garden of the White House on Friday

The short-term deal provides financial relief for federal workers, who have been furloughed or on the job without pay for more than a month and missed another paycheck Friday. The reopening also eases pressures on the airline industry, which was grappling with staffing shortfalls in airport security and air-traffic control. It could speed tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service, and restart other government functions related to small business loans, initial public offer-

ings and infrastructure projects, among others. Announcing the pact in a speech from the Rose Garden, Trump said he would start negotiations between the House and Senate over a full-year bill funding the Homeland Security Department, which oversees the border. “After 36 days of spirited debate and dialogue, I have seen and heard from enough Democrats and Republicans that they are willing to put partisanship aside, I think,” Trump said.

Rami Abdel Rahman said. The SDF have since September been battling to expel ISIS from their last pocket of territory on the eastern banks of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzor. The SDF has advanced swiftly in recent weeks, taking control of a series of key villages, with ISIS scrambling to retaliate. On Thursday, ISIS failed to retake Baghouz from the SDF in one counterattack that left a total of 50 fighters dead on both sides, the Observatory said. Thousands of people, mostly women and children, have fled into SDF-held territory in recent days, according to the Britain based Observatory, which relies on a network of contacts inside Syria for its information. ISIS over ran large swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, declaring a “caliphate”, but it has since lost almost all of its territory to various offensives. But it maintains a presence in Syria’s vast Badia desert.

Sharif’s lawyer files plea for suspension of sentence Islamabad, Jan 26 (PTI): Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif ’s lawyer on Saturday filed a petition in the high court for suspension of his sentence and seeking bail on medical grounds for the incarcerated PML-N leader. Sharif has been incarcerated in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore after he was sentenced to seven years in jail by an accountability court in the Al-Azizia steel mills case on December 24. Sharif ’s counsel Khawaja Haris filed the petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), where petitions for suspension of sentence and appeal against conviction have been already filed. The court had set a hearing for February 18 to hear the earlier petition and appeal, but Sharif ’s legal team wanted to persuade the

court for an early hearing. Sharif is a heart patent and his health has deteriorated as he needs urgent medical attention in a hospital. A panel of experts appointed by the government to examine the former premier also recommended that he should be given proper medical attention. Sharif was tried in three corruption case launched in September, 2017. He was first convicted and sentenced for 10 years in July last year in a case related to Avenfield properties in London. The IHC granted him bail in the case in September. He was convicted in the Al-Azizia case but was acquitted in Flagship investment case in December. The cases were launched on the orders of the Supreme Court which had ousted Sharif as premier in July, 2017.

Ba n g ko k , J a n 2 6 (IANS): The government of Malaysia on Saturday announced its decision to cancel a $20-billion railway link project that was being built and financed by China. Malaysia’s official news agency Bernama reported that the decision to scrap the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) construction plan was taken after attempts by the government to bring down the high project cost failed. The railway link was being built by China Communications Construction Company as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative and some 85 per cent of the project cost was to be financed by the ExportImport Bank of China. Minister of Economic Affairs Azmin Ali said a review of the costs involved showed that the project exceeded the government’s financial capabilities, Efe news reported. “If the project is not terminated, the government will have to bear the interest rate of about RM500 million a year,” said Ali. The Ministry of Finance will now decide on an appropriate compensa-

tion for the cancellation to the Chinese company that will not burden the country economically, according to Bernama. Ali also said that the government had still not decided on the new developer for the railway link project but would continue studying new investment applications. “We always evaluate all new applications for investment in Malaysia, not only ECRL, because we want to maintain foreign direct investment inflows.” The 688-kilometre ECRL was planned to connect Port Klang on the Straits of Malacca to Peng-

kalan Kubor in northeast Peninsular Malaysia which borders Thailand. It was designed to carry both passengers and cargo to and from west coast of Peninsular Malaysia to its east coast. The project was awarded to the Chinese company in 2016 by the government of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who faces several lawsuits on corruption charges and has been under review since he lost the elections in May last year to his former mentor, Mahathir Mohamad, serving as the current Malaysian Prime Minister.

9 dead, 300 missing in Brazil dam collapse

Brumadinho, Jan 26 (AFP): Rescuers worked overnight into Saturday searching for around 300 people missing after a dam collapse at a mine in southeast Brazil killed at least nine, but the local governor said “odds are minimal” that they would be found alive. Seven bodies were recovered Friday hours after the disaster, which saw a torrent of mud break through the disused dam at the ironore mine close to the city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerias, around 1:00 pm. By early Saturday the official death toll had risen to nine, with “nearly 300 people missing,” the local firefighters said, doubling the number of people presumed missing from the previous toll. Up to 150 of those missing worked in the company’s administrative offices which were closest to the dam break, the firefighters said. The mine is owned by Vale, a Brazilian mining giant that was involved in a previous 2015 mine collapse in the same state that claimed 19 lives and is regarded as the country’s worst-ever environmental disaster. Vale shares plummeted on the new accident, losing eight per cent in New York trading. Romeu Zema, the governor of Minas Gerais, told reporters that, while all was

being done to find survivors, “from now, the odds are minimal and it is most likely we will recover only bodies.” His regional administration said 427 people had been working at the Vale mine at the time of the dam collapse, and 279 were recovered alive. The others were listed as missing. The massive, muddy

flow from the collapse barreled towards the nearby town of Brumadinho, population 39,000, but did not hit it directly. Instead, it carved its way across roads, vegetation and farmland, taking down a bridge, and damaging or destroying homes. Te l ev i s i o n i m a ge s showed people being pulled

out of waist-high mud into rescue helicopters, dozens of which were in use by late Friday because of the cut-off land access. Brazil’s new government led by President Jair Bolsonaro reacted to its first big emergency since taking office early this month by launching disaster coordination between the defense,

mining and environment ministries and authorities in the affected state of Minas Gerais. Bolsonaro and his defense minister were scheduled to fly over the zone on Saturday. His environment minister raced to the area late Friday. “Where are our relatives?” wailed Raquel Cristina, one of several people demanding information about their missing kin in the mud-hit area. Officials said they were working through the night, conscious of the precious hours ticking away. Around 100 fire fighters were deployed, some using earth-moving machinery to dig down to engulfed dwellings. The disaster recalled trauma from the 2015 dam break near Mariana, in Minas Gerais. That accident released millions of tons of toxic iron waste along hundreds of kilometers. Vale was joint operator of that dam, along with the AngloAustralian group BHP.

Beirut, Jan 26 (Agencies): Coalition missile strikes have killed 42 people including 13 civilians in what remains of ISIS’s last holdout in eastern Syria, a war monitor said. The Syrian Democratic Forces, with backing from a US-led coalition, are battling to expel the last extremists from hamlets in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said short-range missiles late Friday hit homes on farmland near the village of Baghouz, killing 42 people. Among them were 13 civilians, the Britain-based monitor said. They included seven Syrians linked to ISIS, including three children from the same family, as well as six Iraqi non-combatants, it said. The coalition was not immediately available for comment, but has in the past said it does everything to avoid targeting civilians. “The area is a launch pad for extremist counterattacks,” Observatory chief

And I’m sad it’s taken this long. I’m glad that we’ve come to a conclusion today as to how we go forward in the next three weeks,” she said. Trump’s State of the Union address, scheduled for Tuesday, has also been delayed due to the shutdown. Responding to a question, Pelosi said the new dates of the State of the Union Address has not been planned as of now. “What I said to the President is, when the government is open, we will discuss a mutually agreeable date and I’ll look forward to doing that and welcoming the President to the House of Representatives for the State of the Union when we agree on that mutual date,” she said. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard said that the temporary opening will create the opportunity for Democrats and Republicans to come together to address funding levels and authorities for border security and immigration concerns. “We cannot allow our government and federal employees to suffer and be held hostage because of partisan politics or policy disagreements,” she said.

United Nations, Jan 26 (IANS): Two Sri Lankan peacekeepers have been killed by an improvised explosive device attack on a UN convoy in Mali. Six Sri Lankan peacekeepers were also injured in the attack on Friday near Douentza, Mopti region, the UN said. “Attacks targeting UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law,” said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres. Guterres “calls on the Malian authorities to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this attack, so that they can be brought to justice as swiftly as possible”, he added. Security Council President Jose Singer Weisinger said the Council “condemned in the strongest terms the attack”. The Security Council expressed its “concern about the security situation in Mali and the transnational dimension of the terrorist threat in the Sahel region” and “urged the Malian parties to fully implement the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali without further delay”, the spokesperson added. There are 207 Sri Lankans serving in the UN Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the most dangerous operations that has seen 189 fatalities.

However, the deal, political analysts, said appeared to be a defeat for Trump as he could not get any funding to construct the border wall, which the president says is essential to prevent the flow of illegal immigrants into the US. Asserting that deal is not a concession that he gave to the Democrats. Trump warned of another shutdown or declaring national emergency to build the wall, in the absence of Congressional funding for the wall. “Let me be very clear: We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier. If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on February 15, again, or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency. We will have great security,” Trump said. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, however, expressed happiness over the deal. “Disag reement in policy should never be a reason to shut down government, really shouldn’t. Especially, again, for a period of time that has an impact on the paychecks.

Washington, Jan 26 (PTI): Submitting to political pressure, President Donald Trump has backed a deal to temporarily end the record-breaking government shutdown in America’s history despite getting no funding for his controversial plan to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. The deal resolved the crippling 35-day closure but not the fight over his proposed border wall. Trump is demanding USD 5.7 billion of congressional funding to build the wall, but the Democrats have refused. The shutdown, which began on December 22, has affected some 800,000 federal employees. Tr ump previously vowed to reject any budget unless it included funding for his signature campaign pledge. The deal backed by Trump funds the government for three weeks, until February 15, while lawmakers try to reach a wider deal on immigration. Both the House and Senate passed the plan by voice vote on Friday. The White House later confirmed Trump had signed it into law.

Michael Jackson accusers get a standing ovation at Sundance

Michael Jackson had reportedly paid out $200m in hush money to as many as 20 sexual assault victims, a lawyer has revealed.

I

t’s not uncommon for audiences at the Sundance Film Festival to give standing ovations, but the ceremonial act took on a solemn air as two men who accuse Michael Jackson of molesting them as boys walked onstage following the festival’s only screening of Leaving Neverland, a documentary about their stories. Wade Robson, who says Jackson abused him from ages 7 to 14, and James Safechuck came forward as adults with their abuse allegations after Jackson’s death in 2009. The four-hour film, which will air in two parts on Britain’s Channel 4 and HBO this spring, is a sprawling account of how their lives intersected with Jackson’s at the height of

his fame in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, and then later as adults when the trauma of what happened in their youth started to emerge in serious ways. In addition to accounts from Robson and Safechuck themselves, the film also interviews family members including the boys’ mothers, wives and Robson’s brother and sister. Jackson’s voice is heard in the film, through voicemails he left for Robson and an “interview” Safechuck did with Jackson aboard his private plane, and the film also shows some of the many faxes he sent to Robson. “We can’t change what happened to us. And we can’t do anything about Michael,” Robson said in a Q&A with the audience. But he said he hopes it makes

other survivors feel less isolated and raises awareness for anyone who is responsible for children. Safechuck added that they weren’t paid to participate in the documentary, nor did they expect to get anything from it. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly, which Robson and Safechuck have done in multiple ways. Leaving Neverland has been denounced by Jackson’s estate and fans since the project was announced earlier this month. Jackson was acquitted of molestation charges in 2005 in a case involving another young man. Robson testified at that trial, saying he had slept in Jackson’s room many times, but that Jackson had never molested him. Safechuck made similar statements to investigators as a boy. Then in 2013 Robson filed a lawsuit that said stress and trauma had forced him to face the truth that he was sexually abused by Jackson. Safechuck filed a similar lawsuit the following year. Facebook to integrate Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger: Report

F

acebook is currently working towards integrating its chat services -WhatsApp, Messenger, and photo-sharing app Instagram -- to let their users to message each other across platforms. All of the three apps will support end-to-end encryption but Facebook is yet to provide a timeline for when this will happen, The New York Times reported late on Friday. “Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, plans to integrate the social network’s messaging services -- WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger -- asserting his control over the company’s sprawling divisions at a time when its business has been battered by scandal,” the Times said. However, the chat and photo-sharing services would continue to operate as stand-alone apps. “Their underlying technical infrastructure will be unified, said four people involved in the effort. That will bring together three of the world’s largest messaging networks, which between them have more than 2.6 billion users, allowing people to communicate across the platforms for the first time,”

the report added. The move could let the social networking giant tout higher user engagement to advertisers, thus, ramping up its advertising division at a time when growth has slowed down. Facebook has the most users of any other social media platform, and by combining its assets this way, the company could more directly compete with Apple’s iMessage and Google’s messaging services, according to The Verge. Meanwhile WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption -- the hallmark of users’ security -- may go for a toss if Facebook integrates the popular mobile messaging platform with notthat-secure Instagram and Messenger. According to a report in The Wired on Saturday, to universally preserve endto-end encryption poses a whole additional set of critical challenges for Facebook. WhatsApp chats are currently end-to-end en-

crypted by default. Facebook Messenger offers the feature if you turn on “Secret Conversations.” “Instagram does not currently offer any form of end-to-end encryption for its chats,” the report said. “The big problem I see is that only WhatsApp has default end-to-end encryption. So if the goal is to allow cross-app traffic, and it’s not required to be encrypted, then what happens? There are a whole range of outcomes here,” Matthew Green, a cryptographer at the Johns Hopkins University, was quoted as saying. WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum quit Facebook over difference of opinion with CEO Mark Zuckerberg when it comes to data privacy and encryption. Koum announced his exit “after clashing with its parent, Facebook, over the popular messaging service’s strategy and Facebook’s attempts to use its personal data and weaken its encryption”. Brian Acton started WhatsApp with Koum. Facebook acquired the messaging service ago for $19 billion in 2014. Acton quit Facebook in 2017 and Koum left the company last April. (IANS)

clearer image of Ultima Thule

ASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has beamed back the clearest view yet of the most distant object ever explored -- the Kuiper Belt object (KBO) 2014 MU69 nicknamed Ultima Thule. On Januar y 1, the spacecraft zipped past the ancient Ultima Thule, setting the record for flyby of the most distant planetary object in history. “The new image, taken during the historic flyby is the clearest view yet of this remarkable, ancient object in the far reaches of the solar system - and the first small ‘KBO’ ever explored by a spacecraft,” NASA said in a statement. The oblique lighting of the image reveals new topographic details -- numerous small pits up to about 0.7 km in diameter -- along the day or night boundary, or terminator, near the top. The image also shows large circular feature, about 7 km across, and on the smaller of the two lobes appears as a deep depression. he UK’s Daily Telegraph on Saturday apologized “unreservedly” to US First Lady Melania Trump and agreed to pay her “substantial damages” for an article it published last week. The paper said its Saturday Magazine cover story “The Mystery of Melania” published on January 19 contained a number of false statements, the BBC reported. These included claims that the US First Lady was struggling in her modelling career before she met her husband and that she cried on election night, it said. In an apology on Sat-

urday, the Daily Telegraph accepted that Melania Trump was “a successful professional model in her own right before she met her husband and obtained her own modelling work without his assistance”. It said the article also wrongly claimed that her parents and sister relocated to New York in 2005 to live in buildings owned by her husband and later US President Donald Trump. The paper added that the First Lady’s father was not “a fearsome presence” and “did not control the family” as alleged in the article. (IANS)

he five member student team and Space Kidz India are hoping to receive signals on Saturday from their nanosatellite Kalamsat launched on Thursday night by an Indian rocket, said a top company official. Kalamsat is a 10 cm cube, 1.2 kg communication satellite with a life span of two months. The satellite cost is about Rs 12 lakh. “We are hoping to receive the signals from Kalamsat tomorrow (Saturday). While officials of

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have assured that it is normal and nothing to worry, we are anxious,” Srimathy Kesan, Founder CEO of Space Kidz India told IANS. According to her, only one fourth of the solar battery panel seems to have been exposed to the Sun on Friday which was not sufficient to charge the batteries onboard. “ISRO officials have told us not to worry. Both lobes also show many intriguing light and dark patterns of unknown origin, which may reveal clues about how this body was assembled during the formation of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago. One of the most striking of these is the bright “collar” separating the two lobes. “This new image is starting to reveal differences in the geologic character of the two lobes of Ultima Thule, and is presenting us with new mysteries as well,” said Principal Investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

“Over the next month there will be better colour and better resolution images that we hope will help unravel the many mysteries of Ult i m a T h u l e,” Stern added. The image, obtained with the wide-angle Multicolour Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) component of New Horizons’ Ralph instrument, was taken when the KBO was 6,700 km from the spacecraft, at 12.26 a.m. on January 1 -- just seven minutes before closest approach. With an original resolution of 135 metres per pixel, the image was stored in the spacecraft’s data memory and transmitted to Earth on January 18-19. Saina Nehwal

Jakarta, Jan 26 (PTI): Indian ace Saina Nehwal grinded her way to first final of the season with a combative win over China’s He Bingjiao at the USD 350,000 Indonesia Masters badminton tournament, here Saturday. The 28-year-old Indian notched up a 18-21 21-12 21-18 win over sixth seed Bingjiao, a world championship bronze medallist. CENTURION, Jan 26 (Agencies): South Africa beat Pakistan by 13 runs via the DuckworthLewis method on Friday to take a 2-1 lead in their five-match ODI series. The home team’s pursuit of Pakistan’s impressive total of 6-317 was shaping up to be a thrilling one at Centurion before rain intervened. Reeza Hendricks, who was undefeated on 83, and captain Faf du Plessis (40no) were in the middle of a 108-run stand when the bad weather forced the players off for the second and last time at SuperSport Park with South Africa on 2-187 after 33 overs. The game was finally called off and the result confirmed over an hour later. Pakistan’s score was built around opener Imamul-Haq, who made 101 and was one of a number of batsmen dropped in a sloppy display by South Africa in the field.

Debutant Beuran Hendricks celebrates after dismissing Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman during the third ODI match between South Africa and Pakistan.

Imam also became the second fastest player to reach 1,000 ODI runs, behind teammate Fakhar Zaman. The duo have pushed West Indies great Viv Richards, who set the record 38 years ago, down to third on that list. Babar Azam was also given a life and went on to hit 69 from 72 balls in a 132-run partnership with Imam.

South Africa was 2-79 in reply and under pressure when Hendricks and du Plessis came together. Hendricks hit eight fours and pulled two sixes over midwicket on the way to his second ODI half-century. Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed played despite coming under scrutiny for an alleged racist comment aimed at allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo in the second ODI.

The Inter national Cricket Council is gathering information on the incident but hasn’t announced any formal proceedings against Sarfraz, who apologised the day after and said his remarks were a general expression of frustration not aimed specifically at the South African. Sarfraz also apologised in person to Phehlukwayo ahead of Friday’s game.

Lo n d o n, Ja n 2 6 (Agencies): Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City will not overpay in terms of wages to recruit their top targets. City this week lost out to Barcelona in the chase for Ajax’s highly-rated midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Netherlands midfielder will move to the Nou Camp in a £65m deal in the summer, with the 21year-old reportedly set to earn around £300,000 per week. In this case, Guardiola accepts the lure of Barca is a strong one, but it is understood the salary was

In total, they have played each other 52 times, with Djokovic leading 2725, although Nadal has a 9-5 advantage in majors. Djokovic is bidding to become the first man to win seven titles at Melbourne Park. “Some matches that we had against each other were a great turning point in my career. I feel they have made me rethink my game. I had some disappointing moments where I lost to him. Those kind of encounters have also made me the player I am today, without a doubt.” “These are the kind of matches that you live for, finals of slams, playing the greatest rivals at their best. What more can you ask for? This is where you want to be,” added Djokovic.

also beyond what City were prepared to pay. City boss Guardiola said, “I think we try to keep the harmony in the locker room with the wages. When you have no balance with that, then there is always a problem with the mood in the locker room. One of the good things that City have done is keeping that balance.” Transfer fees and wages are continually rising but, despite City’s modern reputation for lavish investment, they have shown they are not prepared to overspend if they believe deals do not

represent good value. Alexis Sanchez, Dani Alves and Jorginho are among the players to have been pursued by City in the recent past, only for other clubs to move in. Guardiola believes ex-

tra emphasis will have to be placed on spotting talent early. He said, “The reality is that it’s not just one or two teams paying a lot on wages. There are many. Many, many.” “Before, the rumours were that it was just PSG and Manchester City. That is over. Everybody can pay a lot in fees and wages. There are many, and sometimes we can’t compete with that. We have to be quicker, faster and don’t get nervous. At the end, we want players who want to come here.” De Jong is the latest midfield target to have got

beyond City as they seek a natural replacement for Fernandinho, following frustration over Fred and Jorginho. But Guardiola said, “I said many times, with Barcelona and Madrid it’s impossible to fight against them - for the prestige, the incredible league, the incredible clubs they are.” “The players have to take their own decisions. When they don’t want to come, it’s because they want another place. There are other options and we are going to try if we believe we need players in that position.”

Djokovic excited to face Rafael Nadal Melbourne, Jan 26 (Agencies): Top seed Novak Djokovic says he and great rival Rafael Nadal are certain to put on another epic show in the Australian Open final on Sunday. Twenty-four hours after Nadal defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas for the loss of just six games, Djokovic needed only an hour and 23 minutes to dispatch Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-0 6-2 6-2 in one of the most one-sided semi-finals in Grand Slam history. Djokovic has at times looked below his best this tournament, dropping sets to Denis Shapovalov and Daniil Medvedev, but he took to Rod Laver Arena on Friday evening determined to make a statement. Asked if he was trying to outdo Nadal, a smiling Djokovic replied, “Yes. It was hard to do that, but somehow I managed.”

India rout NZ to take 2-0 ODI series lead Osaka wins Australian Open

Mount Maunganui, Jan 26 (IANS): Maintaining their winning streak, a dominant India outclassed New Zealand by 90 runs in the second match of the five-game rubber at the Bay Oval here on Saturday to go 2-0 up in the series. After the Indian openers, Rohit Sharma (87) and Shikhar Dhawan (66) handed a solid start to the visiting side, chinaman Kuldeep Yadav (4/45) starred with the leather to help India register a thumping win. Chasing a challenging 325 for victory, the hosts suffered another batting collapse as most of their batsmen succumbed before a clinical Indian attack. The Indian bowlers struck at regular intervals, denying the Kiwi batsmen to build any big partnership. Bowling all-rounder Doug Bracewell chipped in valuable 57 runs down the order however, it wasn’t enough to help the Kiwis cross the line. Bhuvneshwar Kumar came with an early breakthrough, dismissing Kiwi opener Martin Guptill (15) cheaply before Mohammed Shami packed back hosts’ skipper Kane Williamson (20) with New Zealand’s scorecard reading 51/2 in the eighth over. With the addition of 33 runs in the Kiwi scorecard, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal also joined

the party, sending back a good looking Colin Munro (31). Just when the hosts touched the threedigit mark, Kedhar Jadav worsened New Zealand’s situation after dismissing Ross Taylor (22), who was stumped by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Tom Latham (34) then tried to rescue his side but became Kuldeep’s victim in the 25th over. The chinaman then struck thrice in quick succession, sending back Colin de Grandhom-

me (3), Henry Nicholls (28) and Ish Sodhi, who failed to open his account, with New Zealand at 166/8. Bracewell restored some respectablity for the hosts, smashing a 46-ball 57 to take New Zealand past the 200-run mark. The all-rounder’s firework was decoarted with five boundaries and three hits into the stands. Bhuvneshwar finally applied brakes on Bracewell’s innings as the batsman, while trying to clear

the fence, handed an easy catch to Dhawan at longon. Chahal put the final nail in the coffin, dismissing Lockie Ferguson (12) as India registered a thumping 90-run win. Earlier, a brilliant batting display helped India put a challenging 324/4 against the Kiwis. Opener Rohit and Dhawan were the top contributors with individual scores of 87 and 66 respectively. Struggling Monaco sack Thierry Henry

Edmund out of Rotterdam, Marseille opens

Thierry Henry

PARIS, Jan 26 (Agencies): AS Monaco have sacked coach Thierry Henry and brought back their former manager Leonardo Jardim on a 2-1/2 year contract, the relegationthreatened Ligue 1 club said on Friday. Jardim was himself fired by the principality club last October and replaced by Henry, who was suspended from his duties on Thursday pending a final decision on his future. Monaco, Ligue 1 runners-up last season, are second-bottom of the table just one point clear of

basement side Guingamp and three points adrift of the safety zone. They have won only three of their 21 top flight games this term and conceded eight goals in their last two matches, a 5-1 home defeat by Strasbourg in the league and a 3-1 home defeat in the French Cup to second division Metz. “Leonardo Jardim has signed a two-and-ahalf-year contract with the Club and, together with his technical staff, will take up his duties as of Sunday,” Monaco said in a short statement.

Por tuguese coach Jardim, 44, led Monaco to the Ligue 1 title in 2017 when they reached the Champions League semifinals, before being sacked after a poor start to this season. H e n r y ’s a s s i s t a n t Franck Passi will be in charge of Monaco for Saturday’s game at Dijon, who are one place and two points above them in 18th position. F r i d a y ’s s a c k i n g marked the end of a turbulent few months for Henry, who had no experience of coaching until 2016. The Frenchman, who started out playing for Monaco and went on to enjoy a stellar club career with Arsenal and Barcelona, worked as assistant coach for Belgium for two years until 2018 but had never been in charge of a team in his own right. The 41-year-old 1998 World Cup winner played for Monaco for five seasons, winning the league title in 1997.

Kyle Edmund

Lo n d o n, Ja n 2 6 (Agencies): Kyle Edmund has pulled out of tournaments in Rotterdam and Marseille next month because of a knee injury. The British No 1 withdrew from the Sydney International earlier this month with a left knee problem, and was hampered during a heavy first-round loss to Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open. Edmund had hoped to return to action at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam starting on February 11, but has been forced to miss that and the following week’s event in Marseille.

were off to a perfect start, thanks to the openers, who forged a crucial 154 runs for the first wicket before Kiwi pacer Trent Boult gave some relief to his side, dismissing Dhawan in the 26th over. Ferguson struck soon, packing back a well-settled Rohit with India’s scorecard reading 172/2. Skipper Virat Kohli (43) and Ambati Rayudu (47) were then involved in a 64-run partnership for the third wicket. Boult gave the visitors a major blow as a thick edge off Kohli was caught at fine-led by Sodhi. R ay u d u wa s t h e n joined by Dhoni (48 not out) as the two steadily lifted India near the 300run mark before the former fell to Ferguson in the 46th over. Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav’s (22 not out off 10 balls) fireworks then accelerated the run-rate, taking India to a good total of 324/4 in the allotted 50 overs. For New Zealand, Boult and Ferguson picked two wickets each, conceding 61 and 81 runs respectively. Brief score: India 324/4 (Rohit Sharma 87, Shikhar Dhawan 66; Trent Boult 2/61) beat New Zealand 234 all out (Doug Bracewell 57, Tom Latham 34; Kuldeep Yadav 4/45) by 90 runs.

Melbourne, Jan 26 (Agencies): Japan’s Naomi Osaka has become the new women’s world number one after winning the Australian Open final against Petra Kvitova in three gripping sets at Melbourne Park. Osaka backed up her victory in last year’s controversial US Open final against Serena Williams to claim her second major title, beating Kvitova 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes at Rod Laver Arena. She becomes the first Japanese player to hold the number one ranking, moving up to the top spot from number four. It had appeared Osaka was headed for a straightsets win when she held three championship points at 5-3 in the second on the Kvitova serve. But the Czech showed nerves of steel to save all three and hold serve, much to the frustration of her 21year-old opponent. Even at that point, given the strength of the Osaka serve, it seemed the fourth seed would be able to safely serve out the set. Kv i t ova , h oweve r, broke Osaka and secured a second break to clinch the set and force a third and deciding set. Osaka seemed rocked by wasting her chances and she briefly left the court in an emotional state. But she found her com-

posure early in the third to break Kvitova’s serve and it was an advantage she was able to maintain to close out her win. She then showed her class when she preferred to praise Kvitova rather than bask in the glow of her win. “I always wanted to play you and you have been through so much,” Osaka said at the presentation ceremony. “Honestly I wouldn’t have wanted this to be our first match. Huge congrats to you and your team and you are really amazing and I am really honoured to have played you in the final of a Grand Slam.” It would be a most satisfying victory for Osaka, given her win in the US Open final was overshad-

owed by the drama surrounding Williams. It was also a performance from which Kvitova can draw enormous pride, considering her career almost ended when she was the victim of a vicious home invasion in late 2016. She was held at knifepoint and was stabbed in her left hand, sustaining severe injuries which doctors thought would mean she would never play again. Kvitova returned to the WTA tour the following year and Saturday night’s final was her first appearance in a major tournament decider since the attack. “It’s crazy,” Kvitova said. “I can hardly believe that I just played in a Grand Slam [final] again.”

Man United eliminate Arsenal from FA Cup Lo n d o n, Ja n 2 6 (IANS): Manchester United has defeated Arsenal 3-1 in a fourth-round FA Cup match to eliminate the Gunners from the tournament. While United fans could rejoice in an eighth straight win since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as coach, Arsenal saw themselves bounced out of a competition that they have won a record 13 times, most recently in 2017. Arsenal had more of the ball during the first half at London’s Emirates Stadium on Friday night but were unable to translate possession into chances, reports Efe news. The visitors opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Romelu Lukaku threaded a pass through the Arsenal defense to former Gunner Alexis Sanchez, who beat keeper Petr Cech for the 1-0. The 2-0 came just two minutes later and again with Lukaku as playmaker. The Belgian’s counter-attack left most of the Arsenal squad

stranded in the United end and his pass found Jesse Lingard unmarked in the box for the easy goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has emerged as one of Arsenal’s most dangerous strikers, clawed back a goal for the home side in the 43rd minute. The Gunners flew forward in the second half and it took a great play from Man United keeper Ser-

gio Romero to stop Aaron Ramsey’s header in the 48th minute. Exposed at the back, Arsenal conceded a third goal in the 82nd minute when Anthony Martial scored on the rebound after Cech made an initial stop against Paul Pogba. With the match lost, Arsenal and their supporters had to endure another 18 minutes of futility be-

cause the referee added 10 minutes in stoppage time to make up for the long interruption caused by the injury to Koscielny. An accidental boot in the face from Lukaku left the French defender with a possible broken jaw. M a n U n i t e d h ave outscored opponents 22-5 during what is now their longest winning streak in two years.

Australia crush Sri Lanka in Brisbane test I am ‘physically empty’, says Son B RI S BANE , Ja n 2 6 (Agencies): Pat Cummins took a career-best 6-23 to help Australia crush Sri Lanka by an innings and 40 runs inside three days in the series opening day-night test in Brisbane on Saturday. The paceman completed his maiden 10-wicket match haul as Australia bundled out Sri Lanka for 139, five fewer than the tourists had managed in their first innings, to register only their second test win of the summer at the Gabba. While Cummins was adjudged man-of-thematch, Jhye Richardson also impressed by claiming two second innings wickets on his debut with Australia comfortably maintaining their record of not having lost a test at the Gabba since 1988. Resuming at 17-1 Saturday, Sri Lanka’s hopes of saving the match were dealt a heavy blow when Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Men-

dis fell in consecutive overs from Cummins at the start of the day. After taking a wicket with the final ball of day two, it took Cummins just two balls on day three to get his next wicket, squaringup the scoreless Chandimal

and finding the edge which ballooned to Kurtis Patterson at gully. In his next over, Cummins teased an attempted drive from Mendis (one), who edged to Joe Burns at second slip. Lahiru Thirimanne (32) and Roshen Silva

(three) briefly stemmed the flow of wickets, before Cummins got his fourth, having Silva caught by Burns in the slips to reduce the tourists to 35-4. Right on tea, Richardson produced a fast yorker to bowl Dhananjaya de Silva for 14.

Cummins got a deserved fifth wicket but in controversial circumstances when he had Thirimanne adjudged caught behind, a decision upheld by the TV umpire despite no conclusive evidence Thirimanne had edged the ball. Niroshan Dickwella tried one attacking shot too many off Richardson and holed out to Marcus Harris at square leg, before Cummins’ sixth wicket came from a spectacular catch by Patterson at gully off Dilruwan Perera. Suranga Lakmal was last man out when he was stumped by Paine for Nathan Lyon’s only wicket of the innings. Lahiru Kumara did not bat after Sri Lanka confirmed the paceman had torn his hamstring during the second day and will be unavailable for the second test in Canberra beginning on Friday and will also miss the team’s subsequent tour of South Africa.

L o n d o n, J a n 2 6 (Agencies): Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son has said he “felt physically empty” during the Asian Cup after South Korea suffered a shock quarter-final exit. Despite being considered contenders to win the trophy, South Korea lost 1-0 to Qatar on Friday, leaving Son free to return to London. With Harry Kane and Dele Alli out injured until March, Son’s early return is a huge boost for Mauricio Pochettino, but his latest comments will be of concern to the Spurs manager. “I wasn’t fully prepared,” revealed Son, who played three matches in the United Arab Emirates after arriving before South Korea’s final group-stage game with China. “I felt physically empty. I feel so sorry to have let down my team-mates, coaches and the fans. I would rather not speak

Heung-Min Son

about it really but I haven’t felt right physically. I was losing sleep - I should have looked after my condition better.” Son provided two assists in his first game of the tournament as South Korea beat China 2-0 in their final group fixture, but the 26-year-old made little impact during an extra-time victory over Bahrain and the defeat to Qatar. It was the first time

since 2004 that South Korea have been knocked out of the Asian Cup before the semi-finals. “I thought I would start to feel better and grow into the tournament but it just didn’t happen,” Son said. “Many people expected big things of us and I’m annoyed at myself for not being able to step up. I know I didn’t perform well.”
