TMC alleges Meghalaya government involved in Rs. 140 crore land scam

staying in power through the politics of manoeuvring, Pilot said, “I am confident that the people of Meghalaya can see through this and they are aware and politically conscious to use their wisdom on February 27, when the state goes to vote. “

Pilot said that going by Congress’ track record both in states and the centre, the Congress governments have always delivered the promises it made. “Congress has a long history of commitment and performance. We are committed to fulfilling the promises in our manifesto,” he said.

Correspondent to answer to the people of Meghalaya on the high rates of unemployment faced by the youth of Meghalaya. Both the NPP and BJP manifesto for 2023 have promised jobs for the youth but what were they both doing during the last five years,” he questioned. Stating that BJP and NPP are only interested in

SHILLONG, FEB 21: With just five more days left for the Meghalaya polls, the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday accused the National People’s Party (NPP)-led MDA government of indulging in a land scam worth more than Rs. 100 crore with the purchase of 807 acres of land at Mawpdang Mawkhanu in East Khasi Hills district.

Moreover, with the congress having fielded young and fresh candidates which include many women candidates, the Congress leader said, “This fresh team under the leadership of Vincent Pala will bring good governance to the state. The congress gives opportunities to young people as seen from the 47 young candidates who are contesting from the congress party.”

Exposing yet another scam of the corrupt NPP-led government, Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma said the party demanded for an immediate probe into the matter where the state government had purchased 807 acres of land worth Rs. 140 crore from the middlemen at Rs 85 per sq ft amounting to a total of Rs 298.98 crore, while the actual price purchased from the villagers was Rs 45 per sq ft amounting to a total of Rs 158.28 crore – a difference of Rs 140.7 crore.

“The MDA – which

I will refer as Meghalaya Deceitful Alliance – has once again engaged in the modus operandi of looting the state through purchase of around 807 acres of land in Mawkhanu village of Mawpdang. The government had the middleman purchase the land, dupe the innocent landowners and villagers at the throwaway price of Rs. 45 per square feet, and then made a payment of Rs. 85 per square feet to the middleman,” he said. Sangma said the rates were decided by the state cabinet on October 4, 2021. The Minister-in-Charge for Urban Affairs piloted this proposal and [it was] appropriately approved by the Revenue department.

“All cabinet items are approved by the Chief Minister. Therefore, the documents show that the three persons – the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister, and Urban Affairs minister –have entered into a criminal conspiracy to rob the state of such a huge amount of mon- ey – Rs 140 crores – which could have been given to the innocent land owners,” he said, while unmasking the unholy nexus between the NPP-led MDA government and the middlemen of the state. Slamming the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government for robbing poor people of their lands, the TMC leader asked the Central government to take cognisance of the matter.

“While addressing an election rally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah went hammer and tongs alleging that the state is active in corruption. He (Shah) referred to Meghalaya as the number 1 corrupt state in the country. This has defamed the name of the state and its people. Corruption is not our way of life. Our people are not that greedy. I would urge him to take immediate cognisance of this alleged corruption. Let there be immediate investigation into this [massive land scam]” the former Chief Minister demanded.

Participation of women must increase in all state assemblies: Prez

ITANAGAR, FEB 21

Jitendra Chaudhury

“People, this time, voted for the restoration of peace and democracy,” Chaudhury told a press conference. Taking a dig at the BJP for asserting that it would win 55 of the 60 seats in the elections, Chaudhury said the saffron party’s strength will be red uced to single digits in the House.

Drawing attention of the Election Commission to allegations of trouble caused by miscreants in two strong rooms -- Santirbazar in South Tripura district and Teliamura in Khowai – he said the “mischief- makers who tried terrorising the security personnel there should have been arrested”.

Two separate groups of miscreants had on Monday night tried creating a ruckus near the strong rooms, Chief Electoral Officer Gitte Kirankumar had said, adding that they were driven away in no time.

“The Election Commission is leaving no stone unturned to ensure zero violence during polls. Security forces will remain alert to thwart any untoward incident,” Kirankumar said.

SHILLONG, FEB 20 (PTI):

Actor turned BJP MP Ravi Kishan on Monday claimed that the BJP in Meghalaya will build a film city if the party is voted to power in the February 27 assembly election.

Just as the party did in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP will do the same here, he said.

“Since the youth of Shillong are immersed in music and art, the BJP will build a film city here if voted to power,” he said.

Kishan said it will create jobs for the youths in the state.

“From support staff to soundman, to technician, to artists, to managers, a wide variety of job vacancies will be created in the state by the film city,” he said.

As per sources, the Prime Minister will be visiting these two states on Friday to campaign in favour of the party candidates. With its rich natural resources and quality human resources, the state has full potential to become an attractive investment destination and a hub of trade and business,” she said. The President called upon the legislators to put concerted efforts in preserving the unique culture and traditions of the state.

“Arunachal Pradesh, with its diverse culture and traditions, has a special place in the country. Efforts should be made to preserve those,” Murmu said.

“In today’s era, environmental pollution and climate change are critical issues. We have to quickly find solutions to these concerns. These matters become more important for a geographically sensitive state like Arunachal Pradesh. I tion and expanding its mass base by gaining advantage from Modi’s popularity in the northeastern states. The saffron party contested more seats than before in Tripura and has snapped its ties with the ruling coalition government in Meghalaya and contested all 60 seats in the state. am happy to note that the policymakers of this state have taken care of this issue by showing commitment to climate change through the Pakke declaration,” she said. The declaration envisages a multi-sectoral approach for low emission and climate-resilient development in the state. Murmu expressed hope that other states would also adopt the model to tackle the climate change issue.
