US Senate resolution supports recognising Arunachal as integral part of India

WASHINGTON, MAR 15 with intelligence and weapons. The State Department on Tuesday summoned Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, to express U.S. concerns over the encounter. know whether we will be able to retrieve it or not, but that it has to be done. And we’ll certainly work on it. I hope, of course, successfully,” Kremlin Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev told the Rossiya-1 TV channel.

(IANS): US Senators Bill Hagerty and Jeff Merkley have introduced a bipartisan Senate resolution reaffirming the US’ recognition of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as an “integral part of the Republic of India”.

The resolution comes following a major clash between India and China in the Eastern Sector along the Line of Actual Control in six years.

The incident over international waters on Tuesday was a reminder of the risk of direct confrontation between the United States and Russia over Ukraine, which Moscow invaded more than a year ago and which Western allies have supported

LAHORE, MAR 15

(IANS): After law enforcement agencies pulled back from former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khans residence in Lahore on Wednesday, PTI supporters outside Zaman Park cheered and celebrated “chasing Rangers away”.

Earlier in the morning, the police and Rangers continued efforts - which began on Tuesday -- to arrest the PTI chief in connection with the Toshkhana case, reports Dawn.

However, they were met with strong resistance from PTI workers. The law

KATHMANDU, MAR 15

(PTI): Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” will hold a vote of confidence in Parliament on March 20 after the culmination of the vicepresidential election on Friday, officials said on Wednesday.

The second round of vote of confidence comes after Nepal’s second largest party in Parliament -- CPNUML -- in February decided to withdraw its support to the “Prachanda”-led government in the wake of a renewed political equation in the run-up to the presidential election, dealing a jolt to the two-month-old ruling coalition.

The major reason for the breakup of the alliance between Prachanda and former PM K P Sharma Oli was because the Maoist leader decided to support senior Nepali Congress candidate Ram Chandra Paudel for the President’s post. The vote of confidence will be held on March 20 after the culmination of the vicepresidential election on Friday, officials said.

Separately, a video posted on PTI’s official Twitter showed Khan, donning a gas mask, addressing party supporters outside his residence.

“The message that we delivered to the Russian ambassador is that they need to be more careful in flying in international airspace near U.S. assets that are, again, flying in completely legal ways, conducting missions in support of our national security interests,” Kirby told CNN. “They’re the ones that need to be more careful. “The message was: Don’t do this again,” Kirby added later on ABC. Antonov after the meeting said the drone “deliberately and provocatively was moving toward Russian territory with transponders turned off.” He said his meeting at the State Deptt was constructive and the issue of possible consequences for Moscow over the incident was not raised, RIA state news agency reported.

“At a time when China continues to pose grave and gathering threats to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, it’s critical for the US to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our strategic partners in the region -- especially India,” said Senator Hagerty in a statement.

“This bipartisan resolution expresses the Senate’s support for unequivocally recognizing the state of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India, condemning China’s military aggression to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, and further enhancing the US-India strategic partnership and the Quad in support of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

“America’s values supporting freedom and a rulesbased order must be at the center of all of our actions and relationships around the world -- especially as the Chinese government pushes an alternative vision,” said Senator Merkley.

“This resolution makes clear that the US views the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of India -not China -- and commits the US to deepening support and assistance to the region, alongside like-minded inter- national partners and donors.”

The resolution reaffirms that the US recognizes the McMahon Line as the international boundary between China and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, and pushes back against China’s claims that Arunachal Pradesh is its territory, which is a part of China’s increasingly aggressive and expansionist policies, the statement said. Furthermore, the resolution commends the Indian government for taking steps to defend itself against aggression and security threats from China.

Austrian police warn of threat to Vienna churches

VIENNA, MAR 15 (AP): Austrian police warned Wednesday of a possible “Islamist-motivated attack” in Vienna against churches, citing undisclosed information the country’s intelligence service had received.

Police in Vienna tweeted that they had heightened security in front of certain buildings, including churches, and increased the presence of officers in the Austrian capital.

“There is a nonspecific threat of an assault against churches,” Vienna police tweeted.

“As precautionary measure ... points of interest have been put under in - creased guard by regular and special operation police forces.”

“If there is a concrete danger for the population at a concrete location, Vienna police will warn immediately via all available channels,” police added. Police said they could not say how long their security measures would be in place for. “Police officers are equipped with bulletproof helmets and vests and as - sault rifles. They will carry out surveillance activities and also carry out checks in road traffic,” police spokesman Markus Dittrich told local radio station Radio Wien. He did not give any further details on the background of the threat but said that more police would be seen patrolling in the vicinity of churches.

A spokesman for the archdiocese of Vienna told The Associated Press that

Catholic churches did not appear to be the main target.

“We do not appear to be primarily affected,” Michael Prueller said.

“While we were informed by police about the general threat, we were also told that there is no imminent danger for Catholics. So we decided to keep out churches open to the public and celebrate all church services as planned for the time being.”
