Ephemeral Theater - Festival d’Avignon Avignon, France Advanced Synthesis Option Studio | Theater Architecture | Spring 2017

The venue is not only an enclosure around the stage but an extension of the drama and festivity. As the new venue for the Festival d’Avignon, the word “festival” was key to its design. Festival d’Avignon is an annual arts festival held in Avignon, France in July. The historical Papal Palace is the most famous venue, but a variety of locations, indoors and outdoors, around the whole city are utilized. Our studio, consisting of multidisciplinary teams of Architecture and

03

Drama students, were to conceive alternative designs of a new venue in collaboration with the professional team, led by the French theater designer Jean-Guy Lecat. As a temporary venue, the questioning what differentiates the experience of going to a show at a festival from a regular visit to the theater led to a very minimal concept of a modular box-form venue with movable walls. Mobility allows for flexibility, and thus the venue can be configured freely

ranging from a small black box to an open-air proscenium. The structural details make the venue a blank canvas for the designers and crew, letting the creative directors use the architecture as a part of the world of theater. Entering and leaving this venue will be the start and end of the festival for the audience. The movable walls break the fourth wall and present a oneof-a-kind experience for the festival-goers.

Ny Nordisk Plads Copenhagen, Denmark DIS Summer Architecture Design Studio | July 2017 Ny Nordisk Plads (New Nordic Plaza) aims to be the new generation core of New Nordic Cuisine, which suggests new cooking methods for traditional ingredients. New Nordic Cuisine boom has hit its peak with chefs and producers finding ways to make the cuisine accessible to everyone. Copenhagen’s culture is distinguished by its food and water. People and architecture freely occupy both the water and the natural environment around it. The existing Langelinie Pavilion and the adjacent Kastellet fortress park have strong connection to Copenhagen’s history but are physically detached from the

09

city center. The design objective is to extend the city center to the site, reconnecting it to the modern food and daily lives of the Danes. The plaza is essentially a reflection of the cityscape, and its architecture stemming from traditional building types, becoming a cohesive addition to the city. The programs form a village around the harbour square that can be used diversely by the chefs and the public. Also, the new pavilion is the new home for Poul Henningsen’s Artichoke Lamp that was designed specifically for the original Langelinie. All elements of the plaza act as visual and physical attraction points to the restaurant-goers and the public.

Garfield Maker Center Advanced Construction Studio | Richard M. Gensert Memorial Scholarship | Spring 2015 Pittsburgh, PA, U.S. Collaboration : Kris Li Located in the growing neighborhood of Garfield in Pittsburgh, the Maker Center intends to foster creation, fabrication, and education. Professional makers and people of various backgrounds are encouraged to come to the Maker Center which includes fabrication studios, machine rooms, and classrooms. The architecture provides the grounds for generating serendipitous encounters for creators and their creative ideas. Not only restricted to the interior of the building, it also enables the interaction between the center and its

19

neighborhood, invigorating its context. These design goals were achieved with the concept of intersecting circulation axes, by using large-scale box trusses as the main means of guiding the users around the center. Perforated metal screens on the facade and movable canopy on the rooftop allow for dynamic manipulation of natural light creating appropriate atmospheres in the respective programmatic spaces. The transparency of the circulation axes also invigorates the growth of the neighborhood to become more lively and active.

Bishopsgate Goodsyard Redevelopment Advanced Synthesis Options Studio | Multiplied Grounds | Fall 2016 Bishopsgate Goodsyard, Shoreditch, London, U.K. Collaboration : Gary Li, Noopur Suckhlecha, Charmaine Yau Located at the meeting point of Shoreditch, Tower of Hamlets, and Hackney in London, redevelopment of Bishopsgate Goodsyard can be the solution to the city’s housing crisis and gentrification. Our priority was to create a bridge that also fits into London’s preexisting urban fabric. N/S and E/W paths were carved in addition to existing roads, from which programs

were distributed according to land use of the context. The three N/S streets mimic the activity of London bringing in different experiences into the site. Each of the four blocks has a mixed-use building creating a courtyard typology, providing both public and private spaces from within the historic arches to the top of the podium. The Oriel Gateway leads to Block A and the Bishopsgate

Plaza integrated with the arch ruins. Blocks B, C, D each has four public spaces: ground level retail, pedestrian path above the arches, and courtyard on the podium. The integration of ground level and elevated mixed-use programs brings together the commercial, residential, and public space of Bishopsgate Goodsyard and extends Central London to its further neighborhoods.

Saco Lake Bathhouse Elaboration Studio | February 2013 | National Concrete Masonry Association Project Award Saco Lake, White Mountain National Forest, NH, U.S. Collaboration: Aileena Gray Bathhouse and accommodation for hikers Hiking up the rough White Mountain, the hiker encounters the bathhouse, located to the north of Saco Lake. The bathhouse further submerges the hiker into the journey by providing a serene place for self-absorption. The bathhouse is not a destination to be reached after the hike, but it is just a part of the forest and soil. The experience of meandering though the woods with only nature as companion continues

31

inside the bathhouse until one reaches the tranquil bath waters. The competition required using concrete masonry units, and combined with wood, light, and water, the architecture replicates the experience of hiking. The CMU units make up the walls that invite the users to engage physically with the architecture, as if they are still outside among the trees. Hikers become one with nature with architecture as the medium.

Kaffe Communication Design Fundamentals March 2018 KAFFE (Danish for coffee) is a travel journal + coffee guide of a few of my favorite cafes in Copenhagen, Denmark. The watercolor illustrations of different types of coffee that I recommend at each cafe adds a personal touch, hinting at the mood of the various spaces.

35

KAFFE gives a Scandinavian magazine-like vibe, staying within a straightforward and clean overarching grid with selective information. While the book has a minimalist feel, each set of photographs is uniquely dynamic so that the next page would be unpredictable.

36

Ocean Trilogy Communication Design Fundamentals March 2018 Three fictions about adventures on the ocean are brought together by their covers. The mood of the novels are visualized by the different colors and conditions of the waves.

37

The illustration within the waves portray the relationship between the animal-and-man pair of each story. The three fictions are Life of Pi, Moby Dick, and The Old Man and the Sea.

Typography Poster Communication Design Fundamentals February 2018 The characteristics that make up Times New Roman: the crispness and sharp serif are emphasized by the high contrast colors of the poster that bring the focus to the white solid lines.

41

Its use as a body copy typeface is explained by the layout which draws the eyes towards the bottom lines which are written in one of the smallest sizes of the font.

Scenic Design Minor Collaboration Project | Intrduction to Scenic Design Spring 2017 Scenic design for Ghosts was a solo project. The out-of-scale windows are as though the house is a jail for Helen, the protagonist. The furniture and flowers showcase the femininity that is requested of her.
