Synopsis Textile Design as a specialisation is offered by NIFT, New Delhi that focuses on creating practical and innovative textiles for home, apparel and lifestyle products. The curriculum spans for over eight semesters culminating our technological knowledge, design aesthetics and market sensitivity to nurture the flair for designing innovative textiles. The final semester for this course is dedicated to a Graduation Project which involves an internship period of 18 weeks with a company to design three collections. I did my Graduation Project at The Wishing Chair based in Shahpur Jat. The Wishing Chair, founded in the year 2012, is a lifestyle ,retail brand in the home accessories and gifting space. It operates out of two stores in Delhi and Gurgaon and its online store- www.wishingchair.in. The designated time period allowed me to learn the nuances of work within a design studio and also developed an understanding in the retail market. The 18 weeks have taught me as how to raise bars in order to to sync with the requirements and tastes of the clients brief in mind is surely different than designing at a student level. Direct contact with the vendors also gave me an insight into the technological knowledge of production processes of each product category. Working
with a start up gave me an opportunity to become more resourceful and enterprising. It taught me to work to my greatest potential within a budget constraint. It also gave me creative freedom and a chance to understand things in depth. I participated actively in Marketing, Sales,Merchandising and Styling. I also got a chance to work with other product lines like Stationery and Ceramics that helped me broaden my skill set and knowledge. With a zest to create something innovative and practical, constant support from my mentors and colleagues at The Wishing Chair was a great help and encouragement. For my collections, I was provided a main theme for the month which is a French movie, Amelie based in Montmarte, Paris. This theme is further sub divided into sub inspirations for every month. My first collection for the month of April, ‘Peddlers Street’ is inspired from the city and streets of Montmarte, Paris and includes a range of Cushions and Stationery. My second collection, ‘The Periwinkle Sunset’ lays focus on illustrated florals and includes a range of Cushions, Placemats, Runners, Stationery and Ceramics. The third collection ‘Play Days’ , done for the month of July, derives inspiration from Funfairs and includes a range of Cushions, Ceramics and Notebooks.
Acknowledgement I am delighted to thank everyone who has been a part of this beautiful and eventful four years of my life at NIFT, New Delhi. It has been a journey worth remembering. To add to this, the Graduation Project experience has been tremendous which gave me an insight into the industry. I am thankful to Ms. Avneet Mann, founder of The Wishing Chair for sponsoring my Graduation Project and giving me an opportunity to be a part of their team. I am extremely grateful to my industry mentor Ms. Manorath Dhillon who has contributed immensly with her valuable advice, guidance and support. She has been extremely understanding and has ushered me with great opportunities
with work and learn under her guidance. I am exceedingly glad to thank my faculty mentor, Dr. Neha Singh whose vision and faith has made me stronger wherever I have fallen short. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Design Team at The Wishing Chair for their constant inputs. I thank Barkha, Neharika, Kriti and Sukriti. I am thankful to all the staff workers for being utterly corporative and understanding all the while. I am thankful to my friends and family for their love, support and motivation. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have helped me in the successful completion of my Graduation Project.

Sponsors Profile The Story
The Wishing Chair was founded in the year 2012 by Avneet Mann who went through the high-achieving arc of college, MBA, and hacked it for eight years in the corporate sector and Vivita Relan who was a content writer. Avneet and Vivita had wildly different career trajectories till they came together to commiserate in unison about the sorrow of not being children any longer and that is how The Wishing Chair was born out of a deep desire to recapture childhood while still enjoying the adulthood perks that a pay check brings.
About The Brand
The Wishing Chair is a lifestyle retail brand in the home accessories and gifting space. With a strong creative and feminine aesthetic, the Wishing Chair seeks to connect with its customer on a personal level, imparting a
sense of wonder and happy nostalgia. “As women who decided to make ourselves the target customer – we felt we knew where to fill in the gaps in the market.” says Avneet It operates out of two stores in Delhi NCR and its website www.wishingchair.in. To create a holistic shopping experience, both the stores house The Mad Teapot cafe to allow customers time to unwind and truly soak in the atmosphere of the space. The Wishing Chair designs and curates their own products – adapting designs to their aesthetic. A team of designers design, illustrate, and dream up the tchotchkes. They all have to speak the same language: magical, dreamy, fairy-tale, whimsical, feminine, playful, and wondrous. The Wishing Chair was a name derived from Enid Blyton’s children book series, a firm fixture in the duo’s childhood memories.“We felt it has the same transportive nature of the magical chair, making you believe you’ve
Magical, Feminine Dreamy, Playful Fairy-tale Nostalgic Whimsical, Wondorous
been transported to the fantasy world of your childhood stories. We hope entering the store has that influence on people, tugging at those wistful heartstrings that pine for a more magical, simpler time, says Avneet

Theme: Amelie
The theme for the year 2016 is a french movie Amelie. The film is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation . She has a mischievious personality and promises that she will devote her life to bringing happiness to others. For Amelie, her landscape is something to be admired. Her city, the people in it, and the building blocks of her community pose as opportunities to explore.

Conclusion My Graduation Project has been concluded as ‘Illustré ‘ which is a French word for ‘Illustrated’.It perfectly describes the artistic style I have adapted to create my collections where in my most crucial learning was transforming the Illustrated artworks to overall prints as well as engineered prints. It was definitely challenging to work according to the clients brief and the target market. I got an insight into how the retail world works, and made me realise that creativity is resoursful
only when one is enterprising. The exposure has provided me with a new dimension on everything that goes into a successful business. It also gave me creative freedom and a chance to understand things in depth. I participated actively in Marketing, Sales, Merchandising and Styling.I also got a chance to work with other product lines like Stationery and Ceramics that helped me broaden my skill set and knowledge. Moreover, interaction with vendors also gave me an insight into the production processes.
