During the middle of the 19th century, an eclectic mix of decorative style was fashionable. Two technological developments served to expand the production and popularity of floral patterned fabrics, through the middle of the 19th century. The first was the introduction of the power loom, which had served to increase the speed as well as reduce the cost of production. The second development was discovery of coal tar and aniline dyes in 1850s, which enable manufacturers to produce deeper and more vivid colors. The result was an outburst of naturalistic, often over-blown, floral ornament. A typical mid-19th century chintz incorporated three-dimensional scrolling acanthus leaves and flowers in various shades of green, blue, white, violet and yellow.
