01 - Dublin Tower Hotel

Dublin Tower Hotel is an adaptive reuse of the United States Embassy in Dublin, Ireland. The goal of this project was to propose a second life for the existing build as its ability to function as an embassy is coming to an end.

The embassy stands today as a 5 story circular building with 3 stories above grade and 2 below. The 110’ diameter diagrid consists of precast modules that alternate floor to ceiling windows and balconies. Each module works as a column, twisted 180 degrees from top to bottom. On the inside, there is a 50’ diameter central atrium. While the building is more void than usable space, natural light is able to come in through the top and flood the spaces below.

The embassy sits on a small triangular site in the neighborhood of Ballsbridge. The twisted diagrid structure was significant when the building was complete in 1964 because of its modern aesthetic and contrast with the adjacent buildings. Over the years, the city rapidly began to grow, and as larger, more contemporary buildings were designed in Ballsbridge, the neighborhood outgrew the building, both literally and figuratively. In order to restore the embassy building’s significance in modern day Dublin, we knew it had to adapt to its new surroundings. This meant expanding the building vertically and changing the program into something beneficial for the travelers in the area.

The hotel goes up 18 stories. The first two floors are public with a pub and shops. The 18th floor is a restaurant. Each floor plate rotates by 4 modules to create a waterfall effect consisting of outdoor green spaces. These spaces caputer rainwater and CO2.

03 - Redesigning Brown’s Ranch

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead Gateway serves as a passageway that guides people out of the city and into a vibrant desert landscape. The facility is comprised of a series of separate structures that integrate under an expansive roof structure.

As guests walk along the concrete path, the form diverges to provide a choice between the long hiking trails to the left and the short trail to the right. The folded shade structure is designed to reveal the vast landscape ahead by steadily rising and widening as guests reach the end of the path. The facility is organized into highly public spaces and moderately public spaces. The buildings used for large gatherings and events follow along the main pathway and contain unobstructed views that immerse guests into the desert. The moderately public spaces are aligned with the pathway leading to longer trails, allowing guests to have easy access before entering the site.

04 - Desert Observatory

The Desert Observatory immerses the hiker in nature by placing them in a position to see things that are often over looked. Located off trail and underground, the observatory becomes a hidden gem that frames the vast desert landscape.
