The Buciero hill shelters it from the northern weather systems which batter the coast in the winter. It is then that Laredo becomes the perfect place to surf. While most of the beaches on this coastline are whipped by the northern and north-easterly winds, Laredo is a safe refuge, with orderly and perfectly formed waves.

On the one hand, there is Berria beach – a medium sized sandy beach (1,8 km) which receives strong waves and has the typical features of the Cantabrian coast. On the other hand, there is the wave known as La Fortaleza, one of the longest waves in Europe, which is found just underneath the Fortress on the Buciero hill and which can roll for up to a kilometre. Access to La Fortaleza is complicated and there are two possible routes: either walking to the fortress and then climbing down the cliff with your board, or rowing round the headland from Santoña on the low tide currents. It is a unique wave, very unusual, and full of local people, but just being able to catch a left hand roller on the “Forta” is an unrepeatable experience.

Its perfection offers unique tubes, more commonly found at other latitudes, and when it is forming properly, it is a must for the best surfers on the coast. This perfection is partly due to the sharp change in depth of the water at this point of the coast.

Here several generations of surfers have been moulded. Its long shore offers a number of surfing spots for all levels. The Somo beach joins the Loredo beach, actually making up the same stretch of sand. At the eastern end there is one of the jewels in the Cantabrian crown, the famous wave at the Santa Maria island, known as “La Isla”, a wave which reaches disproportionate sizes (up to six or eight metres). At the western end we find El Puntal, a much calmer area tucked further into the Bay of Santander, one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Between these two points we can find the Loredo and Las Quebrantas waves. Somo beach offers surf for intermediate and beginner levels. The point at Loredo, next to Santa Marina, is possibly the most popular part of the beach, and its curvature means you can choose between calm waves closer to the Loredo car park, or stronger waves further away. The next surf area on this magnificent beach is known as Las Quebrantas, (from “quebrar”, meaning “to break”), a legendary and illustrative name, as it is the point where boats used to turn to enter the Bay of Santander, exposed to the fury of the Cantabrian Sea and where on a great number of occasions keels were snapped, sending many boats down. A true witness to these conditions is a shipwreck which can be seen at low tide, and which gives its name to one of the waves at Somo, known as “El Barco”. This part of the beach is therefore the point where the sea is strongest, and is very popular in the summer when there is less surf. Just opposite this point there is the Cantabrian Surf School which, now 20 years old, is the leading surf school in Spain. Director “Capi” García and his team of professionals are pioneers in teaching this sport and have made a considerable contribution to its expansion in this country.

It is the home of the famous Santa Marina Gigante championship, held with minimum wave heights of four metres. The Santa Marina car park fills up on the days when the island roars with all its might. It is a great sight to see the huge waves being ridden with the Bay of Santander in the background. “La Isla” is a dangerous wave, due to its force and depth, full of rocks and only recommended for expert surfers. The classic days are full of experts in big wave surfing such as the veteran waterman Ibon Amatriain, or the Cantabrian locals Dani García, Óscar “El Loco” or David Echagüe. A few kilometres east of Somo beach, in the town of Ribamontán al Mar, we find Galizano beach. Open to the full strength of the Cantabrian Sea, this small beach, a 150 metre stretch of fine golden sand, is a good option to consider for the summer months.

This beach is also of historical importance as it was here that surfing in Spain started, back in 1964. The pioneer was Jesús Fiochi, who had bought a surfboard that same year in France, thus introducing this Hawaiian sport to the Iberian Peninsula. The beach at El Sardinero runs along the coast from the Magdalena Palace to the Hotel Chiqui. It is right outside this hotel that one of the most original wave on the beach, known as “El Muro” (“The Wall”). This is an impressive wave which breaks along the sea front wall, providing an unusual spectacle as the surfers ride it, so close to the stone wall that it seems they might crash into it at any moment. Apart from the “El Muro” wave, El Sardinero has a number of spots which when the surf is forming well, are noteworthy for their strong tubes. Given the popularity of the beach with the general public, surfing is not allowed on El Sardinero during the summer months.

A stone’s throw from the beach: A trip up to the Magdalena headland – the palace was a gift from the city of Santander to King Alfonso XIII, who used it as his summer residence from 1902 to 1929. It is reached from the Avenida de la Reina Victoria, although you can also walk up from the “Bikinis” beach. For the town-dwellers, there is the atmosphere, food and cultural events of the capital.

The next spots are found to either side of the main car park, and following the sand bank to the mouth of the estuary (at the western end of the beach) there is another exceptional tube wave. With its beauty and variety of waves, Liencres has earned itself a place among the most famous surf beaches in Europe. With the right conditions, it is full of top level surfers, although there are always waves to suit all tastes.

Although its name is not taken form the “locos” (madmen) who ride its waves both on warm summer’s days and in the cold winter, this beach is a reference point in Europe. The origin of its name comes from a former mental hospital close to this small beach (around 500 metres across) which, nestling in the town of Suances, offers top quality waves in a young and surf orientated atmosphere. Its west-facing position offers it almost unique features on the Cantabrian coast. Here, the best surfers from the nearby town of Torrelavega have traditionally learnt their skills – such as Pablo Solar, Spanish National Surf Champion, or his nieces Mirka Martín – current National Women’s Surf Champion, and Deva Martín, National Bodyboard Champion. It was also on this beach that, in 1989, the surfboard brand Jalaika was born – one of the best known boards in the area.

The Los Locos Surf Club organises a contest each summer, in September, with a strong and well established tradition. It is the Billabong Surﬁng Event, which has run for thirteen years. It has become the leading surf championship in Spain and is the best event for establishing the level of the country’s top surfers.

A stone’s throw from the beach: this town was an important stop on the coastal route to Santiago, and as a result of this the old town, the “Puebla Vieja” received the status of Historical Artistic Centre in 1987. Magniﬁcent monuments, 15th and 18th century buildings, the Santa María de los Ángeles church, the Castillo del Rey, and the Corro Palace.

Located almost on the boarder between Cantabria and Asturias, nestling between the Cantabrian Sea and the Picos de Europa mountains, San Vicente de la Barquera is a town which remains true to the essence of the region and has a strong fishing tradition. It has one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire coastline, measuring 3.5 kms in total and divided into two: the El Rosal beach (alongside the San Vicente estuary) and Gerra beach (alongside the Gerra headland). Along this huge strip of practically unspoilt sand, we can find all kinds of waves in clean, crystal clear water. Although surfing has grown a lot in this town, and each summer there are more surfers on the beach, the number and variety of waves means there is a relaxed atmosphere. It has a special charm, making it a favourite destination for surfers from all over Europe. It is also a great option for learning to surf. Also, to the east of the Gerra headland there is the stunning Oyambre beach (1.8 kms), which offers a number of surfable spots.

The whale remained in the area for several days and captured the attention of the press and the general public who came to see the animal, which eventually returned to the depths of its own accord. San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas, the towns either side of this beach, have had a strong whaling tradition in former times, when the Cantabrian coast was populated with right whales.
