t’s the year of the Monkey, according to the Chinese 12-year animal zodiac cycle. And the celebrations are just as colorful! From Lion Dances, Dragon Parades and many cultural performances throughout South Florida, the over one million and a half Chinese community will celebrate their New Year over the traditional 15 days of observance! This is a communal celebration of one of China’s major holidays! Legends and stories explain its origins, but the main reason for this traditional celebration, which begins on February 8th and attracts families of Chinese descent and lovers of Chinese culture alike, is simple; to celebrate a year of hard work, have a good rest and relax with the family while wishing for luck and prosperity in the coming year. The largest celebration takes place February 14th from 11am-6pm at Miami Dade College, Kendall campus, 11011 S.W. 104th Street. Jointly hosted by the Confucius Institute and the Chinese Cultural Foundation in Miami, expect a huge festival with spiritual activities, cultural demonstrations, tai chi demonstrations, calligraphy, face painting, acrobatics, arts and crafts, bounce houses and slides, and of course, lots of food. Grow Program Teaches Kids Cooking and Nutrition
A
new course in a series, titled “MyPalette: The Torah Edition,” offered at the Chabad Chayil - Highland Lakes Jewish Center in North Miami Beach is teaching kids about nutrition and food from a Jewish perspective. Students learn how to choose a balanced diet of colorful whole foods, based on the USDA’s “MyPlate” visual concept. They develop a sense of appreciation for their food and its purpose, and practice the Jewish concept of mindfulness by saying blessings of gratitude before eating. They create and prepare their own original recipes that are both healthy and kosher, and treat their parents to a special dinner cooked just for them! The ‘GROW’ series of supplementary education programs is designed to inspire kids to be the best people they can be. The courses cover meaningful topics that are relevant to kids’ lives—everyday concerns that children can relate to, and for which parents often seek help and support. The program, a project of CHAP & cKids International, has reimagined supplementary Jewish education as an experiential, arts-based learning adventure that challenges children with real-world problems to solve. Kids gain practical skills and develop creativity while working together to meet each challenge and become conscious, mindful eaters who are able to make intentional choices rather than relying on impulse or habit.
Healthy Bread Not all bread is created equal! During recent years there has been a resurgence of artisan bakeries.
