HOSPITALITY
SOCIAL DESIGN There’s no question that San Francisco is one of the country’s prime examples of a cosmopolitan city. It is also filled with a host of assisted living communities, all of which exist to allow the seniors that retire here a chance to enjoy life in San Francisco at its fullest capacity.
SENIOR ASSISTED LIVING CENTER
Similarly, “New Roots” Assisted Living Centre unlike other assisted living centers is designed to connect the residents with the importance of nature and how nurturing a system which contains life, can successfully benefit and increase the life expectancy for the elderly.

BUILDING ORIENTATION HOW WERE THE SPACES ARRANGED? When conducting the sit analysis, I studied the sunlight and how it would penetrate the interior space of the building. I have located the kitchen, dining and communal areas where there will be most of the sunlight. Additionally, the space is designed to encourage outdoor activities and nurturing plants for each resident as a mean to keep them busy and engaged in the community.
A study showed that allowing seniors to grow their own plants increases their life expectancy. This further adds to the entire design philosophy of this project. It is well-known that an outdoor lifestyle with moderate physical activity is linked to longer life, and gardening is an easy way to accomplish both. And preliminary studies among elderly people suffering from cognitive issues (such as dementia and Alzheimer’s) report benefits from garden settings and horticulture therapy. Sunlight and fresh air, for example, help agitated elders feel calmer, while the colours and textures of various plants and vegetables can improve visual and tactile ability.

THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL LIGHT ON GREENERY AND SENIORS
There is no panacea for growing old but, the science suggests, gardening does appear to improve our quality of life as we age.

TERRESTRIAL
CONCEPT STATEMENT
NEW ROOTS SENIOR ASSISTED LIVING CENTER
San Francisco is an ever-growing and highly urban city in the world today, due to which technology has taken over the inhabitants daily life. To an extent, that the world has never been as advanced as we encounter it to be today. Urbanization has led to increased infrastructure in the city where many of us tend to neglect the importance of sustainable living.
However, there is one problem that remains and fails to address a specific portion of the demographics. This is the elderly population. Along with urbanization, humans have depleted much of earth’s natural resources and as designers, it is crucial that to design a sustainable space for the seniors where the mind and body is whole with direct interaction with nature. Sometimes we forget the importance of nature and its’ effects on the well-being of a society as well as smaller, and more fragile communities. Therefore I came up with a concept defined by the term terrestrial. Terrestrial in this case means an ecologically driven setting mainly referring to roots and trees, fire and wood, air and water and lastly earth. Humans are social animals and we require constant interaction to be able to thrive in our environment. Most of all, we are the greatest example of terrestrial beings. The physical setting of nature is stimulating and can be deeply spiritual. Roots are an integral source of nutritional elements when trees grow which takes place over many years. The roots embody the grounded aspect of being spiritually in tuned with the earth. The roots are wandered into the soil from which the water is a vital source of life to persist. The air allows precipitation and the cycle is continuous.

NOSTALGIC REVIVAL Nostalgia - a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.
CONCEPT STATEMENT
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HQ
Revival - an instance of something becoming popular, active, or important again. In order to understand the concept completely, the meaning of the words play a significant role. Presidio in San Francisco has a rich history and contributed monumentally to the rest of the city. This is where it all began. Presidio used to be a Military complex between the two world wars. First home to the native people known as the Oloni; then, the Spanish arrived in 1776 to build a fortified village called El Presdio. In 1821, after the Mexican revolution, they created 3 pueblas that is current day “City” or “Bay Area” as many of us know. In addition, National Geographic is an organization which first started out with the single goal of establishing “A society for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge”. Hence, a successful way to incorporate Presidio’s History into the organizations goal of continuing to educate and inspire humankind. The National Geographic Society is a global nonprofit organization committed to exploring and protecting our planet. This concept will aid my design decisions in a way that is not just aesthetically pleasing, but also functional. It will strongly represent the concept through the eyes of the organization, where each visitor will find themselves exploring the unknown. Presidio’s history will epitomize the past and the present, bringing in that sense of nostalgia; further educating people about how this famous city was formed. The history of the Spanish population in Presidio will serve as a hierarchy for material choice.

prehistoric studies locales, Inn at the Presidio, and a green open air gathering space for picnics, celebrations, and casual play. The Presidio has a rich history dating back to the era of the local Ohlone individuals. The Spanish settled in 1776 to set up the northernmost station of their realm in western North America. The Presidio fell under Mexican ruling for a fairly long time before the U.S. Armed force took control in 1846. More than 148 years, the U.S. Armed force changed the Presidio grounds from for the most part desolate hills and clean to a verdant, overwhelming military post. In 1962, the Presidio was assigned a National Historic Landmark and the site has been a piece of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area since 1994.

The concept that I formulated initially stemmed from researching the organization’s identity and some key historical facts. We owe it to The National Geographic for all we know and understand about the world today.

Therefore, my first concept is Nostalgic Revival which I have decided to implement in my space artistically. The Nostalgic aspect will focus more on the History of Presidio and this will be showcased in the design by utilizing Spanish tiles. The Spanish architecture will function as a window into the past. This will then open more opportunities for me to use an array of materials which will represent cultural significance. For instance, the Spanish were heavily influenced by Islamic architecture and some of their well known patterns are interchangeable. I want to create an interior environment which has a contemporary layout and merge that with traditional arc shaped wall openings into the exhibition spaces.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH
-TARGETED AUDIENCE/DEMOGRAPHICS
Young, Foodie, Hipster crowd living within the community. “It’s all about fresh, clean food... “ The background research consisted of a study of the neighborhood, the urban planning to determine the volume of customers and visitors who will benefit from this establishment. These customers have a high disposable income that are part of the new movement gearing their lifestyles or food habits towards supporting Organic, Local, Sustainable Farmers, Fisherman and Ranchers. Research showed that the weather of San Francisco is in favor to the remodel of the space. Not too cold and not to warm, is the ideal temperature which will allow encompassing a total transformation in the neighborhood. A fast and rapidly growing zone will satisfy the client and his need for establishing a powerful community.

ECHO What:
76
CONCEPT STATEMENT
ÉCLAT HALL
The fundamental idea that will provide artistic inspiration for the design will stem from the word and my initial concept defined as “Echo”. Echo in this case will be an expression to portray a close parallel or emphasis and repetition, of a thought, feeling, style, or event. Subsequently it will aid in establishing a desired atmosphere by combining linear arrangements and organic forms in the interior space. It will be a visual metaphor represented through the application of various materials, colors, texture, structure and form of objects. Who: Tony wants to target people who will take great pleasure in being served and offered a healthy and high-quality lifestyle. The client wants to build a strong base for the customers and visitors into this space. Additionally, this will not only appeal to Tony and his cultural identity, but also along with all those who come into this Food Hall. Hence, successfully creating a community within a community. Why: The word “Echo” will translate the international, translate the subcultural experience of dining, by incorporating inspirational qoutes, graphics that will give people a taste of Europe. Since the client himself has travelled worldwide and even owns a couple of restaurants, he wants people to indulge in not only healthy; but also great food and one of a kind experience. It will powerfully resonate with Tony as it will give him the opportunity to feel and cherish nostalgia.

These marble textured pendant fixtures will be a sophisticated addition to the interior space of the cafe. The marble texture further ties in with the marble counters that will be used at the cashier, bar kind of seating feature area in the cafe. The source of light is LED and will be applied for both decorative and task lighting purposes. The windows enable an interplay of both natural and artificial light.

COLOR AND FORM
ÉCLAT HALL
The remodel of the Market Hall features a contemporary aesthetic which is inviting to the hipsters and tech individuals; quintessential to the city of San Francisco. After much thought and investigation, I came up with a bold yet playful logo. It will be visually stimulating which will encompass a neutral and gray palette symbolizing a clean approach to the overall feel and design. The interior will showcase elements of design were the color palette will comprise of a monotone scheme with pops of color and accents. The interior space will integrate plants and nature to further tie in th users in the space with greenery and foliage while they dine and enjoy the space with family and friends.

LOGO
The crown is the key element of this logo. It symbolizes brilliance, royalty, individuality, power and freedom. The word “éclat” means brilliant display or effect. It is a French word and a noun which focuses on the idea of flair and pizazz.
Fonts play a major role in the graphic elements of all logos. This helps communicate the culture of this business and restaurant. Definitely unique and memorable, this logo with illuminated and custom built with back-lit LED lights ÉCLAT HALL

GENESIS PRIMARY CONCEPT: STAGES OF NATURAL GROWTH
CONCEPT STATEMENT
THE MARIOTTO RESIDENCE
LEVEL 1 Concept: Genesis For this project, I have decided to dedicate each floor as one of the stages in natural growth. The first being “Birth” further defined and Genesis will be allocated for level 1 of the residence. The color palette will embody earthy tones red browns and cool, desaturated tones of blues. The aesthetic for the first floor will represent tranquility and calmness. The client living on the first floor may be subject to physical disabilities. Furthermore, design elements will be used to its fullest potential to create an accessible and code compliant unit.
CLIENT INFO A tenant will rent the 1st floor unit from Maria Mariotto. This unit will be rented through San Francisco’s Section 8 and Rental Assistance Program for low-income tenants. For the remodel, it will be considered a unit which will demonstrate affordable housing.

BLOOM
CONCEPT STATEMENT
THE MARIOTTO RESIDENCE
Concept: Bloom As the concept of the second floor, the color palette is composed of mostly greens and neutrals. The second stage focuses on the idea of growth. The notion of nature is incorporated in the living space by physically bringing the outside inside. There will be desaturated use of green along with it’s analogous color blue which symbolizes water and life. For the second level, there will be an increase in the number or floorings used as well as furnitures. As for the outdoor patio, it will include green wall and furniture constructed from reclaimed wood. The design philosophy for my concept is that with the rise of the level, the design becomes more complex. The change is gradual and obvious. The second level will embody splashes of color, implementing one of the elements of design to represent the idea of cause and effect in our daily lives. During the stages of growth, all events that take place are never set on stone. Therefore there is a constant element of surprise during this phase. All furniture, finishes, textures and materials will be chosen carefully and efficiently to ensure that it represents and signifies my concept, further combining key elements of design for a well thought out design and layout.
102
CLIENT INFO The second level will have a total of two occupants. A single parent with 1 child/daughter. This will be affordable housing unit as well.

106
CONCEPT STATEMENT
THE MARIOTTO RESIDENCE
The last stage of natural growth is “Death and Decay”. The combination of these two words together sound rather off-putting due to which, I have decided to conceptualize the third floor with the title “Eternal Rest”. The idea that is communicated at this stage is the immortal nature of living beings. All living things grow old and die. Death is inevitable and yet the process of decaying in nature is beautiful and a part of all lives. The images are for inspiration and the third unit will embody a similar color palette. Although the process can be desolate, the color palette will embody a clam, lively and happy mood to the setting and environment. Pops of color will be consistent throughout the space as well as textures and materials. During the process of disintegrating into the ground, various beings will project and different selection and dynamics of colors and hue. I have tried to keep that fact consistent with in the design development. This is the last stage and it will have the most complexity in terms of its relation to the first and the second level. The complexity will be demonstrated through the utilization of a wide range of variety in materials, fixtures, hardware and other design elements. Although, all three levels will be comprised of universal and sustainable design.
CLIENT INFO Maria is 45 years old and a single mom. She lives together with her daughter Simona and her father Frank. Maria owns a business and primarily works from her home. At any time, she may have up to three employees work from inside her home, the 3rd floor unit, on various projects. Maria needs an office space for herself and up to 2 other employees with laptops. Maria will serve as the landlord to the low-income tenant in the 1st floor unit.

FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, THANK YOU First and foremost I would like to thank the Almighty Allah for blessing me with a fortunate life. I truly feel blessed for the opportunities I have had. My journey has taught me happiness, hardship and patience. I cherish each moment leading up to the end of this journey. To my loving parents, who were generous and made my education possible. Many thanks to my beloved father who inspired me and has always been my role model. Thank you for believing in me and for all the sacrifices you have made to ensure the best possible life a daughter could ever ask for. I will always admire your ambitiousness, tenacity and artistic flair. Creating a portfolio was harder than I thought and more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. None of this would have been possible without my best friend, Marlen. She was the first friend I found who was as motivated as me, always working in a team; like two peas in a pod. She stood by me during every struggle and all my successes. That is true friendship. To my friends, Marlen Covarrubias, Ivan Veggeland, Claire Shan Sun, Faisal Albinali, Maria Fernanda Traboulsi, Thong Luc, Marielle Luis, Bianca Lovel Parker, Luna Sibai, To my advisors and instructors, Finally, to all those who have been a part of my getting there: Kathleen Valcuchak, Olga Zhobreboff, Tom Collom, Jemy Massie, Leonarda Tamayo, Susan Sutton, Kathleen Roche, To people I met during Internships, Morgan Fellows, Alyssa Meunch, Lacey Monsoon, Josephine Liu, Cristina Sanchez, Devyn Ingwell, Tiffany Baylock, Andy Sand, Andrei Zoulotini, Miki Downes, To Ivan, Thank you for always being there, advising me, helping me with school and filling my life with joy. Our time in San Francisco will remain a highlight in my going journey. Forever and always. I could not have come this far without your support and patience. And, To you, if you have finished reading this book
