MISSION & VISION
THE NAMI MISSISSIPPI MISSION NAMI Mississippi is a nonprofit grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons with serious mental illness and their families. We work to accomplish our mission through support, education, advocacy, and research.

OUR VISION We envision a future where all residents of Mississippi receive needed mental health services; stigma and discrimination regarding mental illness is challenged at every turn; and the best evidence-based and emerging science-based treatments and supports are accessible to all residents who live with mental illness. Mental illness is no longer an obstacle to a full and satisfying life; its impact greatly diminished.

PROGRAM STATISTICS
Information and Referral More than 2,000 calls were received providing support, information and referrals to peers, family members and professionals.
Self Help/Peer Support Services Support Groups 109 community-based support group meetings served 740 individuals. This includes those affected by mental illness and their family members/ caregivers.

Mental Health Education Services Family-to-Family • 2 courses were delivered to 19 family members/caregivers • 6 new teachers trained to facilitate courses Peer-to-Peer • 1 course was delivered to 6 peers in recovery • 7 new teachers trained to facilitate courses In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness • 1 presentation delivered • 4 new presenters trained to deliver a presentation Connection Support Groups • 77 support group meetings held for 537 attendees • 2 new support groups developed in the state
Family Support Groups • 6 New Family Support Groups • 32 support group meetings held for 203 attendees Staff Presentations/Outreach • 30 presentations were delivered, serving 2,368 individuals • 21 presentations were delivered, serving 498 individuals NAMI Homefront • 1 Graduate Youth Mental Health First Aid • 2 courses were delivered to 15 attendees

AFFILIATE HIGHLIGHTS A decade ago, the NAMI grassroots recognized the need for stronger NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates to deliver on our critical mission. In 2010, a committee from the grassroots worked with NAMI Board and staff to begin setting forth the NAMI Standards of Excellence. Beginning in 2013, the process turned to re-affiliation to reinforce those standards. In the spring of 2016, a deadline of December 31, 2018 was established to get all organizations through the process. In 2017-2018, NAMI Mississippi Affiliates worked diligently to complete the process. To date, NAMI Central Mississippi, NAMI Vicksburg and NAMI Meridian completed the re-affiliation process.

NAMIWALKS NAMIWalkers from throughout Mississippi applauded our new site, the Mississippi State Capitol. This new location afforded participants with a view of the city throughout the walk, activities that were in close proximity to one another and free parking. NAMIWalks 2017 was comprised of 200 walkers, 10 Walk Teams, 20 corporate sponsors and 30 volunteers. The 13th Annual NAMIWalks raised more than $30,000 for NAMI Mississippi and Affiliate programming such as support groups, courses on mental health, multicultural outreach initiatives and our Helpline.

think again AWARENESS campaign In May 2018, in recognition of May as Mental Health Month, the Mississippi Department of Mental Health and its partners in the Mississippi State Department of Health, NAMI Mississippi, the Mental Health Association of South Mississippi and the Mississippi Public Health Institute launched an expanded public awareness campaign for adults titled “Think Again.� These partner agencies are working to raise awareness about mental health and the connection between mental and physical health. We want to encourage Mississippians to speak up and speak out in order to change the way we think about mental health.

PARTNERSHIPS THE AKA AND NAMI MISSISSIPPI PARTNERSHIP In 2015, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) and NAMI affiliates across the United States embarked on a four-year initiative to raise awareness of mental illness in the African-American community. Founded in 1908 by African-American women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., AKA is an international service organization with 283,000 members in 987 graduate and undgraduate chapters. In Mississippi, we are working with the Nu Sigma Omega, Rho Lambda Omega and Upsilon Upsilon Omega chapters. Our AKA-NAMI Mississippi partnership got off to a great start with members from both chapters participating in NAMIWalks 2018 and supporting NAMI Faithnet programming during Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. We’re looking forward to working with the AKAs over the next few years, and increasing mental health services and support to the African-American community.

THE JACK and JILL & NAMI MISSISSIPPI PARTNERSHIP We are excited to announce a new 2-year partnership with Jack and Jill of America Inc. The purpose of this partnership is to provide you with opportunities to work with an organization that has a strong track record of community engagement work. Jack and Jill of America chapters will work with NAMI state organizations and affiliates to raise mental health awareness in African American communities across the country. Jack and Jill of America, Inc., a membership organization for mothers of children ages 2 to 19, works to nurture future AfricanAmerican leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. About the Partnership In our continued efforts to provide opportunities and support for your work, we reached out to Jack and Jill of America leaders to establish a formal relationship between both organizations. Earlier this month, we signed an MOU that identifies mental health awareness and working with NAMI as a priority area for Jack and Jill for the next 2 years. Jack and Jill of America members tend to be highly educated and influential individuals (doctors, lawyers, business owners, teachers, etc.). Chapter members use their skills and resources to impact their local communities in different programmatic areas. As a result of this new partnership, to fulfill their health program areas, Jack and Jill of America chapters will work with us to increase mental health awareness for African American children.

NAMI MS had the honor of presenting to over 60 children at two Jack and Jill events hosted in the Central Mississippi area.

THE HOSA AND NAMI MISSISSIPPI PARTNERSHIP NAMI is happy to announce a new 2 year partnership with HOSA: Future Health Professionals, an international student organization that promotes career opportunities in the health care industry and enhances the delivery of quality health care to all people. The purpose of this partnership is to support your hard work at the local level. About HOSA HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE). HOSA’s goal is to encourage all health science instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership. The organization has over 202,000 members in 4,500 chapters in 48 states and 6 countries and territories. Eighty percent of HOSA members are high school students. About the Partnership Every 2 years, HOSA members select an organization to be their National Service Project. This year, recognizing NAMI’s impact in improving mental health, they selected us as the national partner! This set up in motion dialogue between the two organizations to make this a reality. This is a great opportunity for us since HOSA chapters receive recognition by fundraising or donating service hours to their National Service Project partner. This will translate into thousands of dollars coming to NAMI and hundreds of volunteer hours that will help us continue to advance the NAMI mission. To give you an idea, HOSA chapters raised over $300,000 for their last partner organization. In 2017-2018, NAMI MS Staff presented to over 500 future healthcare professionals at the HOSA State Leadership Conference and Fall Leadership Conference.

CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM The lack of mental health crisis services across the U.S. has resulted in law enforcement officers serving as first responders to most crises. A Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is an innovative, communitybased approach to improve the outcomes of these encounters. In more than 2,700 communities nationwide, CIT programs create connections between law enforcement, mental health providers, hospital emergency services and individuals with mental illness and their families. Through collaborative community partnerships and intensive training, CIT improves communication, identifies mental health resources for those in crisis and ensures officer and community safety. 142 law enforcement officials, first responders and more were trained in Mississippi.
