Letter from the President of the Board

ear fellow members, More than ever, we are living in a time when it is important to live, work, and serve in our communities with integrity, fidelity, and passion. Many of you are professionals whose days center around service and support. Others of you are a testament to the lived experience of mental illness and the hope of recovery. Still others are families who persevere in supporting a relative with mental illness. As easy as it is to get distracted by the day-to-day demands of life, we must always keep in mind that our most significant legacy is in the people to whom we’ve shown love and care. As we kick off 2018, let us do so with a renewed passion, having reflected on the mission of our organization and on the new life it can bring to so many. At NAMI Mississippi, we are constantly on the lookout for programs and volunteers that bring together our best efforts and build bridges within our local communities and across the state. Our calendar this year is filled with advisory council meetings, local support and awareness programs, mental health and recovery education programs, and community outreach events. We’re connecting with our neighbors, our fellow advocates, our elected officials, and members of our communities like police officers, teachers, social workers, church leaders, and families. We invite you to come be a part of

this important work. We want to build stronger teams in our local affiliates, plant new affiliates in parts of the state where support is limited, and make connections that unify NAMI Mississippi and other organizations and state agencies in a positive vision for what mental healthcare can look like. We need you for that. Contact your local NAMI affiliate or our State Office to find out how you can support and engage in the essential work that we do. Like our page on Facebook and visit it throughout the upcoming legislative session for updates of how your representatives at the State Legislature are supporting those living with mental illness and their families in Mississippi. We treasure our members, and we treasure the passion and perspective you bring to our organization. We invite you to be a part of our work by joining us May 17-18, 2018 at our annual State Conference at Belhaven University. The theme is “THRIVE: Navigating the Journey,” and we will explore recovery, joyful living, and effective transitions. Also share your community success stories at our annual membership meeting May 19, 2018 on the Belhaven campus. We look forward to another year of hard, cheerful work as we make 2018 a year of progress for mental wellness in Mississippi. Sincerely, Brett Mayfield, Board President

i, all! Welcome to another amazing issue of the NAMI Mississippi Newsletter! As always, I am excited to share how we are working diligently to carry out the mission of NAMI Mississippi. Within this newsletter, you will find where I, along with our dedicated staff and volunteers work alongside partners to not only advance and strengthen the mission but to also enhance our communities. Before I introduce you to the wonderful outreach activities being held in the Oxford, Meridian, Pine Belt, Central Mississippi, Yazoo City, Southwest Mississippi and the Gulf Coast areas, I will provide you with a brief overview of some of the state chapter activities. First, I am pleased to announce that in early October, as a member of the Attorney General’s Mental Health Task Force, I along with

several board members began working alongside a group of dedicated leaders. The task force leadership includes, but is not limited to, mental health professionals, local and statewide elected officials, law enforcement officials, chancery judges, medical associations, and community service organizations. I look forward to the collective efforts of this group, as we all share one common goal: Working to ensure adequate services will be provided throughout the state of Mississippi. In addition to working alongside our current leadership, we are recruiting our future leaders. In early November, I had the honor of presenting to more than 200 students at the HOSA-Future Health Professionals Leadership Conference. In speaking with many of the students, I am certain we have a great group of future health professionals and advocates!

Lastly, I am pleased to announce that we reached NAMI National’s re-affiliation target deadline. Since 2013, the NAMI Board has been thoughtful to encourage and support but not pressure and penalize state and affiliate leaders for determining the right timeframe to do the re-affiliation work. As time has gone on, they have been encouraged by the progress made to start and finish re-affiliation by brand new affiliates that didn’t exist four years ago as well as states that have experienced hardships. They are focused on making sure affiliates and states have what they need to be able to successfully complete re-affiliation in 2018. I am pleased to announce that we met the 50-percent target goal! Sincerely, Tameka Tobias, Executive Director

ew Year’s greetings to all NAMI members and friends! Our affiliate had a very productive year in 2017, but as they say, there is always room for improvement. :-) Looking back, we are particularly pleased with the opportunities we have had to assist with the formation of the Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and the de-escalation training of numerous law enforcement officers throughout the Pine Belt. That work will continue throughout the New Year as more officers are added to the CIT program. The CIT graduates have professed their appreciation for the insights they have received from NAMI members. Our affiliate is collaborating with other agencies to host a CIT Appreciation Banquet in April 2018.

AMI Meridian hosted our annual Candlelight Vigil on Monday, Oct. 2, during National Mental Health Awareness Week and attended a free Opioid Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24 as well as a fall festival at Central Mississippi Residential Center, on Thursday, Oct. 26. Pictured are our members and friends enjoying a nice spread and fun conversation during our second annual Members and Friends Holiday Reception at East Mississippi Electrical Power Association’s auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 7. During the event, some items for our Christmas gift bag service project were delivered. On

The local Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Chapter continued to be supportive to our affiliate in2017. They helped sponsor a Minority Mental Health Forum in July. Numerous clients, providers, and family members participated. The Hattiesburg Mayor’s Office greeted the people who attended. This marks three years in a row for this significant event. We were privileged to be a part of the NAMIWalk in November. Once again, we received outstanding support from the Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources team as we prepared for the walk. We had four walkers represent us as the Pine Belt Pacers. We hope to promote a special NAMIWalk next year in the Hattiesburg area to increase the number of donations to support NAMI programs. We continue to enjoy excellent support from the team at the NAMI Mississippi Executive Director’s office. We are also impressed with the can-do spirit and investment of energy by our NAMI Mississippi board executive officers, led by Brett Mayfield. Gloria Mwase, the NAMI Mississippi board vice-president, has been an awesome facilitator of NAMI advocacy efforts in our state. We are maintaining a strong focus on expanding our membership, so the “load” can

be shared as we fight to eradicate stigma. We do what we can to assist individuals and families who struggle with mental health crises. We frequently refer families to the most appropriate mental health services. We have guest speakers at most of our monthly meetings. Please join us on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Forrest General Hospital Cafeteria Elm Room to share ideas and learn more about the issues in mental health. Indeed, we look forward to a very blessed new year working together with our NAMI partners. In fact, two NAMI on Campus Programs at the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University will be initiated in 2018. Let’s continue to advocate for significant improvements in our mental health system. We are companions on this exciting and meaningful journey! - Respectfully submitted by Joe Kinnan, Ph.D.

Tuesday, Dec. 12, all the items donated for the gift bags were distributed to a local homeless shelter, Alliance Health Center, DeKalb Group Home, and others.

We wish everyone a wonderful, peaceful holiday season, and may 2018 be a fantastic NAMI year! - Jill R. Walsh, Secretary

ur Oxford affiliate has been very active in our local community this fall season. The first event was our attendance at the annual Health Fair on the Ole Miss campus. We were asked to set up a table complete with stacks of pamphlets. We enjoyed speaking with the many professors and students who stopped by to chat and learn more about NAMI. As members of the Family-to-Family group, we spoke to them about education, stigma and awareness. This was great exposure for NAMI and for our local affiliate. The next event was the Suicide Prevention Walk on the Ole Miss campus in early October. Several members of our affiliate attended, proudly wearing green NAMI Oxford shirts. It was a very emotional day for those of us who have suffered suicide in our own families. Our Oxford Affiliate was well represented at the BancorpSouth Center of

Tupelo in October. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. invited us to their “Mask Off ” event, complete with music and dancing. AKA presented our affiliate with a very generous check for $1,000, which was accepted by our outgoing president, Michael Danahy. We are both grateful and honored to be the recipient of this gift. AKA also has been very generous in supporting the national NAMI organization. Team Oxford was very successful in raising funds for the NAMIWalk this year. Our team goal was $1,000, but we

received donations for nearly twice that amount ($1,905). We so appreciate all our friends and family members who contributed to this worthy cause. Our bi-monthly support group continues to thrive, with several new members in attendance, in addition to many who have attended for years. Similarly, our Connection group remains vibrant and active. We look forward to many more opportunities to highlight the good work of NAMI here in Oxford, Mississippi! - Amanda Williams, President
