NAMI Mississippi welcomes Sitaniel J. Wimbley as its new Executive Director. In this role, Sitaniel will continue to work with the NAMI Mississippi Board of Directors, affiliates, community partners and sponsors to improve the lives of persons living with mental illness as well as their families.
W
imbley received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern Mississippi and went on to obtain her Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix in 2006. Wimbley is very knowledgeable of NAMI Mississippi; she has served as Account Manager, Walk Manager, Program Director and Interim Executive Director. Over the last three years, Wimbley has gained extensive knowledge of NAMI and the mental health system. In her learning journey, she has also networked and promoted NAMI Mississippi in many meetings to gain valuable allies along the way. Mrs. Wimbley is devoted to applying her skills, experience, and knowledge to help NAMI Mississippi continue to grow and stop the stigma of mental illness.
Prior to NAMI Mississippi, Wimbley spent years in the banking industry, but she knew that was not her intended calling. Today, she helps to promote mental wellness all over the state of Mississippi. Mrs. Wimbley specializes in helping individuals living with a mental illness to overcome the stigma associated with mental illness. She is no stranger to mental illness and the stigma surrounding it as she was born to a mother who lives with bipolar schizophrenia. She considers herself a proud symbol of her mother’s determination to overcome the stigma. A native of Natchez, Sitaniel and her husband Jonathan reside in Brandon with their two daughters. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, helping her daughters in various extracurricular activities, and actively learning to practice self-care.

reetings in 2020 to all NAMI members and friends! Our affiliate continues to set goals and foster programs to defeat stigma and to help people who struggle with mental health issues. We will meet on the last Tuesday of each month, sharing ideas and learning much from some outstanding guest speakers. We continue to foster progressive mental health programs such as Crisis Intervention Team Training, Behavioral Health Court, Mental Health First Aid, and other programs that have a positive impact on our Pine Belt community. We plan to have elected a new slate of officers by March 2020. We’re extremely grateful for the excellent service given by the previous executive committee: Debbie Dale, President; David Connell, Vice President; Caterina Ventura, Secretary; and Joe Kinnan, Treasurer. We are also very appreciative of the superb contributions by our NAMI Mississippi Board Representative, Kim Brownlee. We are grateful that the City of Hattiesburg has chosen to continue as a NAMI Mississippi sponsor. The city officials contribute many in-kind donations to our affiliate to help with NAMIWalks Pine Belt and other mental health programs. Unfortunately, the Walk scheduled for October 26, 2019 had to be canceled due to very bad weather. Our Walk teams and sponsors were quite understanding and donated funds that helped us closely approach our goal of $13,000. We received a major donation from the University of Mississippi Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity that once counted, may push us over the top! Special kudos to the NAMIWalks Pine Belt team, headed by Lauren Parker Toler. Well done! We are very pleased with the opportunities we have had to assist with the formation of the Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and the de-escalation training of numerous law enforcement officers throughout the Pine Belt. We present the NAMI perspective to each class. We have hosted a luncheon for the CIT officers on Feb. 5 and will host another on Feb. 27 to extend our appreciation for their great services. We are represented on the Planning and Advisory Board for the Pine Belt CIT programs. We are blessed by having
outstanding partners such as the Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources (PBMHR) Mental Health Center (Region 12). One of the most exciting programs in our state (in fact, in the world) is the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course. Our affiliate has sponsored MHFA classes in 2018 and 2019. We are committed to hosting more classes in 2020. We very much need volunteers to help arrange for speakers, select locations, sign up students, and procure refreshments. This year, as in the past, we had the honor of supporting the Christmas holiday parties for the participants in the Region 12 Mental Health Center AOT and PACT treatment programs. Both parties were great events. The Region 12 staff is outstanding in all respects. We are truly looking forward to the NAMI Mississippi State Conference on April 23-24. The agenda is always quite impressive, and we are encouraging our members to attend the events in Jackson. We intend to help with the registration fees for each of our affiliate members. As mentioned above, our affiliate has a general meeting on the last Tuesday of each month at the Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. We meet at 6:00 p.m. in one of the rooms off of the cafeteria. (You can call Joe at 601-550-8219 for directions.) Our first speakers this year will describe the ways that the Region 12 Mental Health Center assists people who have a mental health crisis. Our NAMI affiliate helps some of the people with their initial purchase of medications.
Our membership continues to grow in quantity and quality! Our membership continues to grow in quantity and quality! We do need volunteers for all of the above opportunities to serve. We especially encourage people to volunteer to be trained as facilitators of the NAMI Signature Programs. One of our most crucial needs is to develop facilitators for Family Support Groups. We often receive calls for help and seem to scramble to find assistance for people. A strong, wellestablished family support group is a must to foster healing and bright futures. Finally, it’s not too soon to look ahead to another successful NAMIWalks Pine Belt. This year’s walk is slated for Saturday, October 17 at Hattiesburg’s Kamper Park. We had an exceptional team of 12 people last year who spearheaded the event. We ask each member and/or friend of NAMI to consider assisting with this year’s Walk. Just let us know of your interest, and we will take it from there. :-) We’re privileged to be a part of the NAMI advocacy team in our state and nation. Indeed, we are companions on this exciting and meaningful journey! appy New Year! We can hardly believe 2020 is here, and my, how time flies! At the beginning of 2019, our affiliate was offered the opportunity to earn a $500 national grant. With hard work and the dedication of our affiliate members, this grant was successfully earned. Our affiliate received the $500 grant on January 6, 2020. Our affiliate members completed four Family and Friends presentations. Mary Pope and Jenny Drake led the April presentation at the Warren-Yazoo Mental Health Complex Conference Room. On November 14, Delores McGee and Jenny Drake conducted two sessions of the 90-minute Family & Friends presentation with the staff at Vicksburg Cooper Lighting, Eaton Plant. Also, as Family-to-Family State Trainers, our teachers will be traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to work as trainers with the Baton Rouge Family & Friends four-hour presentation. Upon completion of the recertification requirements for our new Family-toFamily manual, plans will also be ongoing to offer more Family & Friends classes in Vicksburg during the month of February. September 28, we held our first NAMIWalks Vicksburg. We are proud
to announce that the Vicksburg Affiliate achieved its 2019 goal to raise $5000. Thank you to Mayor George Flaggs, our emcee, Emmarie Anderson, and all our local sponsors and supporters. Without their donations, footwork, and prayers, this accomplishment would not have been possible. We also want to give a huge thank-you to our NAMIWalks chairperson, Delores McGee. Her leadership was phenomenal! October 22, Dr. Gloria Butler of Merit Health River Region was NAMI Vicksburg’s guest speaker in the conference room of the Warren-Yazoo Behavioral Health Conference Room. Her topic was “The Role of Mental Wellness in Physical Health.” Our affiliate holds quarterly presentations on topics of importance to the well-being of the public. The Affiliate’s awesome birthday parties for those celebrating birthdays in October, November and December were held for the fall quarter. Thanks to our affiliate members for their continued support. All those in attendance were delighted and a good time was had by all. December 5, we held our sixth annual Affiliate Christmas Party at the WarrenYazoo Behavioral Health Conference Room. Thanks to all members and friends who donated their time and provided gifts, food, games, decorations and
Christmas songs for all our guests. December 12, NAMI Vicksburg’s enthusiasm was on full display as our members represented the affiliate in the city’s annual Christmas Parade. A special thank you to Mary Pope and our Wisconsin Cove Apartments members for their participation. As you can see, we are a very active affiliate and plan to keep up the energy as we enter the 2020 year. January 28 was the most recent NAMI Vicksburg Affiliate Meeting. Our meeting was at 6:00 p.m. in the Warren-Yazoo Behavioral Health Complex Conference Room. The guest speaker was Dr. Casy McNemar, Supervisor at Warren-Yazoo Behavior Health System. His topic was “Crisis Services at Warren-Yazoo Behavioral Health.” Our Affiliate business meeting followed the presentation. At this time, we are busy organizing and scheduling classes for the spring and summer months. We scheduled a Family & Friends presentation in early February. With hard work and a lot of luck, we will set dates for a Family-to-Family eightweek course beginning in late March. A Peer-to-Peer class is scheduled for the spring as well. ur last affiliate meeting at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson was held on September 23, 2019. The meeting was wonderfully facilitated by Debbie Dale, who has since moved to Louisiana. We truly miss her presence. Debbie provided home-cooked refreshments and shared her mental health story, which included poetry. Her story was heartfelt and memorable. The theme of the meeting was “Suicide Survivors Left Behind,” and the guest speaker for the meeting was Vickie Winslett, president and co-founder of Mississippi Alliance to End Suicide. Her detailed presentation was effective in sharing the importance of recognizing the signs of suicide and how to take action, Thanks so much, Vickie, for educating us. Special thanks to Galloway United Methodist Church for continuing to allow us to use your facility for our meetings. We also thank NAMI Central Mississippi members Jessica James, Dr. John McFadden, Monica Wolters and Latasha Willis for
lending a helping hand. Thanks to our Affiliate Representative Auvergne Williams for trusting us to hand over the reins so he could travel to attend his daughter’s wedding. Congratulations! On October 8, Latasha Willis gave a presentation about NAMI Mississippi at the Annie Thompson Jeffers Library in Bolton. Just prior to this presentation, Latasha was featured in an article that reporter Julie Whitehead has written about her mental health recovery journey for the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting. The article was republished in other papers, including the Clarion Ledger. During the presentation, Latasha summarized her history of mental illness, explained NAMI Mississippi’s programs and services, and gave tips on preventing mental health stigma. Special thanks to library branch manager Alfenette Robinson and the Jackson Hinds Library System for allowing Latasha to give the presentation this past fall. (Latasha is also the social media web services coordinator for the Jackson Hinds Library System.) We’re in the process of planning the next affiliate meeting for NAMI Central
Mississippi, which is tentatively slated for Tuesday, March 3 at Galloway United Methodist Church. Be sure to follow NAMI Central Mississippi on Facebook for updates. Joy Brashears Amerson joined NAMI Mississippi as Account Manager in 2019. She graduated from Emory University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and from Millsaps College with a Master of Business Administration. She has 20 years’ experience as an office manager working in her family’s businesses. As Account Manager, Joy is responsible for the following duties: accounts payable, bimonthly payroll, distributing affiliate reports, membership processing, remitting payroll taxes, processing grant reimbursement request, assisting team members in NAMI Mississippi event planning and production, and attending weekly team meetings. Joy is a professional actor who has appeared in numerous plays at New Stage Theatre and has been featured in movies and on TV. She also enjoys traveling and photography.
Claire Keil, a native of Brandon, Mississippi, is an active member and advocate for the National Alliance on Mental Illness where she currently stands as Mississippi’s State Youth Engagement Coordinator. She actively visits the System of Care sites along with maintaining video and conference calls. She stands as our liaison between the Department of Mental Health and System of Care sites in Hattiesburg and Meridian. She is certified to administer Mental Health First Aid for both Youth and Adults. Since 2006, Claire has been serving as an active volunteer and counselor for the Mississippi Burn Camp Foundation. She is a graduate of the University of Mississippi where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in sociology, and is preparing to continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree. Claire is passionate about improving youth mental health and increasing their success rate of overcoming traumatic life experiences.

Latasha A. Willis is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with an emphasis in computer science from Tougaloo College, an Associate of Science degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in media design from Full Sail University. She currently serves as a Community
Engagement Specialist for NAMI Mississippi, where she is responsible for graphic design work, web development and social media management. Latasha was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and depression in 1999, which led to her becoming a NAMI member in 2005. She was a NAMIWalks team captain for The Church Triumphant Global every year from 2007-2017. She became a NAMI Peer-to-Peer Leader in 2017 and a NAMI Peer-to-Peer State Trainer in 2018. Latasha works as the social media web services coordinator for the Jackson Hinds Library System, where she is responsible for graphic design work, web development and social media management in addition to press releases and media coverage of library programs. Latasha is also an entrepreneur. She has operated her graphic design business, Reason to Live Studios, since 2005, and she is transitioning it into a graphic design consulting and education firm. She also owns an online store called The Spinster’s Shoppe, LLC, where she has been selling home decor, jewelry, accessories and more since 2014.

Kawanna’s professional background includes working with Tyson Foods and The Coca-Cola Company for more than 20 years. Kawanna has been volunteering with NAMI Mississippi for six years providing assistance to those in need of mental health resources and more. She compiles complete monthly reports to the Mississippi Department of Mental Health that update them on how the organization is meeting annual goals. She is also responsible for various administrative duties in the office. Kawanna’s hobbies include caring for stray and feral animals, and doing Pilates.
David Shumpert is originally from Itawamba County, Mississippi. He was married for 26 years and fathered three beautiful children. David is currently on worker’s compensation and has agreed to volunteer at NAMI Mississippi through the Ascent Return to Work Program. David is completing a six-month alcoholic recovery program. He has found that NAMI’s program pairs perfectly with the 12-step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. David is greatly honored to represent the struggle of suffering with both substance abuse and mental illness, also known as dual diagnosis. The awareness and importance of these issues will be a personal goal of his to bring to light - that there are resources available for anyone impacted by these unfortunate problems. David answers the phones, checks messages, and sits at outreach tables for the State Office. He also performs other tasks assigned by the office team.

The first of its kind for NAMI Mississippi, the Path to Recovery Two-Day Crash Course (PRCC) is a class for adults with mental health conditions. Participants spend two days learning coping skills, the biology behind mental health conditions and more. A seven-week coaching session for goal setting follows weekly via conference call. As a reminder, the NAMI Board of Directors has decided to add a Household membership category to our membership structure as well as increase the dues for Regular and Open Door memberships. All of these changes became effective July 1, 2017.
Household Membership - $60 Regular Membership - $40 Open Door Membership - $5 A Household membership will apply to everyone living in a single household whose names are provided to NAMI. Regular and Open Door memberships will continue to apply only to one individual. For voting purposes, each membership (including Household) will be counted as one (1) membership.
