Dear Members, It’s a time of celebration!! NAMI Mississippi turns 30 this year!! That’s 30 years of support, education, and recovery. For 30 years, our organization has offered a sense of community and acceptance at affiliates across the state. We’ve trained hundreds of participants in our signature programs and hosted support groups in our communities for people living with serious mental illness, their families, and loved ones. I count it as a great privilege to have been able to serve as your president for the past three years and, in serving, have had the opportunity to meet those who started, shaped, and strengthened our organization. Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen a little further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” NAMI Mississippi owes a great deal to those giants of our past who saw a need and sacrificed their time and work to meet it. As we chart a course forward, we have every reason to be proud of the work we’ve done and optimistic about the future. Dozens of volunteers, teachers, facilitators, and hardworking staff members have contributed to the work of NAMI Mississippi and our organization is thriving! We’re investing in the development of new affiliates, helping build CIT programs, leading Mental Health First Aid trainings, supporting NAMI signature programs, and spearheading a statewide Youth Systems of Care program. We’ve diversified our programming to make sure that every Mississippian living with mental illness gets the best possible support we can offer. I’m so very proud of who we have been, who we are, and who we are becoming. I hope that you will all consider joining us at the NAMI Mississippi 30th Anniversary Gala on Thursday, May 16th, where we can celebrate together!! reetings to all NAMI members and friends! Our affiliate continues to set goals and foster programs to defeat stigma and to help people who struggle with mental health issues. We meet each month, learning much from some outstanding guest speakers. We help spearhead progressive mental health programs such as Crisis Intervention Team Training, Behavioral Health Court, Mental Health First Aid, and other programs that have a positive impact on our Community. As we mentioned last year, we are grateful that the City of Hattiesburg has become a NAMI MS Sponsor. The City officials contributed many in-kind donations to our affiliate to help with the NAMI MS Pine Belt Walk on October 27, 2018. The Mayor helped kick off the event, along with our State Representative, Missy McGee. The City Zoo and the Parks & Recreation staffs were also factors in helping us raise over $12,000. We are very pleased with the opportunities we have had to assist with the formation of the Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and the de-escalation training of numerous law enforcement officers throughout the Pine Belt, including personnel from Jones and Forrest Counties. We will continue that support throughout 2019. We are represented on the Planning and Advisory Board for the Pine Belt CIT programs. We are blessed by having outstanding partners such as the Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources (PBMHR) Mental Health Center (Region 12). One of the most exciting programs in our state is the Mental Health First Aid Course. Our affiliate sponsored two MHFA classes in July 2018. We briefed the City of Hattiesburg Mayor and City Council on March
4, 2019. We encouraged them to have city employees trained in MHFA (youth course). They are favorably considering the idea, and may even host a course in late May. We will help host the events. The next scheduled course offering in Hattiesburg is June 8, 2019. Tameka Tobias, the Exec. Director of NAMI MS, will be one of the instructors. We are truly looking forward to the NAMI MS State Conference and GALA on May 16-17. The agenda is quite impressive, and we are encouraging our members to attend the events in Jackson. We hope to help with the registration fees for each of our affiliate members. Our affiliate has a general meeting on the last Tuesday of each month at the Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. We usually meet at 6 pm in one of the rooms off of the Cafeteria. (You can call Joe at 601-5508219 for directions.) Thus far this year, we have had two outstanding speakers at our meetings: Jason Pegram, a Peer Support Specialist, and Catherine Jorns, the Executive Director of RISE (Above Circumstances). Both gave us superb insight into the best ways to help vulnerable people re-discover their “giftedness”. Our membership continues to grow in quantity and quality! We do need volunteers for all of the above opportunities to serve. We especially encourage people to volunteer to be trained as facilitators of the NAMI Signature Programs. One of our most crucial needs is to develop facilitators for family support groups. We often receive calls for help, and seem to “scramble” to find assistance for people. A strong, well-established family support group is a must to foster healing and bright futures. Finally, it’s not too soon to look ahead to another successful NAMI MS Pine Belt Af-

filiate Walk. This year’s is slated for Saturday, October 26, at Hattiesburg’s Kamper Park. We had an exceptional team of 12 people last year who spearheaded the event. We ask each member and/or friend of NAMI to consider assisting with this year’s Walk. Just let us know of your interest, and we will “take it from there”. We’re privileged to be a part of the NAMI advocacy team in our state and nation. Indeed, we are companions on this exciting and meaningful journey! reetings from NAMI Vicksburg-Yazoo!!! Whaaat??? A different name? No worries. Just letting the readers know that NAMI Vicksburg has officially merged with NAMI Yazoo, and welcomes all friends, members, and supporters in Warren, Yazoo, and other nearby counties who want to work toward the NAMI mission of improving the lives of individuals living with mental illness. We extend a special invitation to past or present NAMI members in the Yazoo area to contact us via email (vicksburg@namims. org) or telephone 601-630-9470 (leave message for call back) and let us know your updated contact info so we can include you in all of our affiliate activities. You are a very important part of our team, and we look forward to getting to know you better. NAMI Vicksburg-Yazoo welcomed 2019 with a quarterly affiliate meeting January 22, 2019, and a second called business meeting the following week on January 29th. Committee Reports & Recommendations were heard with Mary Pope and Sarah Johnson updating the affiliate on the birthday parties they hosted at the Warren-Yazoo Group Home and Wisconsin Cove Apartments and the announcement of the Alcorn Health Fair on April 11th. The Education Committee set the date April 23rd at 6 p.m. for previewing the new NAMI Family & Friends 90-minute seminar at the April affiliate meeting. The seminar, not yet released nationwide, will be led by six Family & Friends teachers Mary Pope, Sarah Johnson, Randall Williams, Deloris McGee, Jenny Drake, and Harriette Mastin, and is allowed by special permission from NAMI. Everyone is cordially invited to attend and see this special presentation. In addition, Youth Mental Health First Aid instructor Randall Williams announced a Youth MHFA class set to begin February 13th at Crossway Church. Several trainings were also scheduled between January and April. Four affiliate members Bill Mounger, Randall Williams, Thomas Carson, and Harriette Mastin completed a new NAMI 360 online training January 14th in order to be able to input
affiliate data into the system. An extensive Affiliate Development Workshop was held April 3rd from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with NAMI MS Staff Tameka Smith, Sitaniel Wimbley, Amanda Prevost, and Emily Gunning providing a wide range of information on affiliate responsibilities, running a successful affiliate, and fun ideas for a local WALK. Eleven affiliate members attended. Congratulations to Deloris McGee and Jenny Drake, who have been selected by NAMI to attend the National Train the Trainer program for Family-to-Family from April 12-14! We will soon have two more great state trainers here in MS! These same two ladies represented NAMI Vicksburg-Yazoo at the Metro Jackson Community Prevention Coalition Conference at Jackson State University April 1st sharing personal stories and giving a 30-minute presentation on the benefits of the Family-to-Family and Family & Friends programs. They, along with affiliate vice president Thomas Carson, will also be at the MS Peer Support Specialist Summit in Jackson May 30-June 1. Affiliate Representative Randall Williams has been spearheading the process of establishing a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) in Warren County for many months. He has made major progress in coordinating local law enforcement, Warren Yazoo Behavioral Health, Merit Health River Region and NAMI Vicksburg-Yazoo/NAMI MS. A completed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) amongst all parties is expected within the year. Discussion is ongoing about scheduling a second Mental Health Town Hall as requested by many attendees of the first Town Hall. The focus will be on informing the public about CIT and local mental health resources in the community. Exciting Events to Remember: NAMI MS

State Conference on May 16-17 at Belhaven, Dr. Billy Kim Center. Deloris McGee and Jenny Drake will be panelists for the “Ask a Family Member” Panel Discussion at the conference. On Saturday, May 18, the Annual Statewide Membership meeting and Recognition Awards presentations will take place at Belhaven, Dr. Billy Kim Center. We cannot forget the NAMI MS 30th Anniversary GALA on the evening of May 16 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Bridlewood of Madison, 3024 MS Hwy 22. This elegant blacktie event will include music, a silent auction, and NAMI MS Awards of Excellence to outstanding people who have advanced the cause of mental health in the state. The GALA provides a wonderful opportunity to remember all of the past NAMI MS staff, board members, and volunteers without whose efforts the organization would not have remained so strong and effective as Mississippi’s Voice on Mental Illness. he Oxford NAMI Affiliate has been very active during the past fall/winter. Highlights from our activities are summarized below. • A Mental Health First Aid Workshop was held February 12 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Oxford. Members of our affiliate (Michael Danahy, Hanne Gaycken, Mary Harrington, Carol Van Besien, and Amanda Williams) arranged for the location and provided refreshments and lunch. There were 18 participants, the majority from Clarksdale. Kerri McNatt from Communicare conducted the workshop, and this provided our affiliate with the opportunity to network with her. • Our affiliate decided to join St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for their annual Mardi Gras parade on March 5th. Before the walk, we had NAMI Oxford business cards printed with the meeting times and locations for our family support group and our Connections group. We stuffed little bags with the cards, Mardi Gras beads, and candy, and handed them out during the parade. Seventeen members of our affiliate participated, and we carried a large NAMI Oxford banner. We hope this publicity will help promote awareness of NAMI Oxford within our community. • The state training workshop for our affiliate is going to take place on April 6th,
at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. We appreciate Michael Danahy for securing the location for this workshop and the Mental Health First Aid Workshop. • Our Family Support Group, which meets every other Saturday, continues to be a valuable resource for the community, with new people attending and continuing members providing support. The local Connections group remains strong; it meets weekly and enjoys a monthly dinner out together. - Submitted by NAMI Oxford affiliate members

he fourth quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019 were busy relationship building opportunities for NAMI Four Rivers. In October our affiliate lunch and learn focused on Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) with officials from Brookhaven/Lincoln County. In attendance was the Mayor of Brookhaven, City Aldermen, Chief of Police, Sheriff of Lincoln County, State Representative and Department of Mental Health. A complete overview of what CIT, the benefit of having trained officers and community was met with high optimism. We will continue to work on this project in 2019. In November we participated in NAMI Walks, which raised $1,945.00 for our affiliate. In December NAMI continued to engage with community partners by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Pike County Law Enforcement to be part of the developing CIT team to be lunch the first quarter of 2019. presented and introduce NAMI Four Rivers at the CIT training in Magnolia on January 16th. February 26th, 2019 NAMI Four Rivers held its second lunch and learn Natchez, the first one was in February 2018. We had over fifty individuals from various community organizations and concerned citizens in attendance. Stacie Webb, Kimberly Lindsey presented on the services provided at Southwest Behavioral Health. Faces and Voices of Recovery Mississippi (Curtis Oliver) presented on Opioid Use Disorders (OUD), Mental Illness and how the community is vital for family and individual recovery support. One of the takeaways was the encouragement for the community to get involve, join NAMI and be a part of the solution.
The state office provided family support group training in McComb in February. Five people graduated and are ready to start groups in McComb, Magnolia and Natchez. We are working to relaunch Peer to Peer training. The Family Support Group in Brookhaven (Lead by Harold and Nancy White) meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 and Natchez is working on getting a team. NAMI Four Rivers thanks everyone that volunteered and gave of their time to make this lunch and learn a success. The speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jefferson D. Parker, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, who will his department’s plans and challenges in delivering psychiatric care.

Youth Advisory Council: We are currently working to restructure the Youth Advisory Council and need great Youth Leaders to help us. NAMI MS State Conference: NAMI MS Turns 30: The Journey Continues is coming up Thurs, May 16 & 17 at Belhaven University in Jackson and we will need lots of help. Let us know if you are interested in being on a conference committee. NAMIWalks 2019: We have already started planning for NAMIWalks MS (Oct 5) as well as affiliate walks in Meridian (Oct 12), Vicksburg (Oct 12) and Hattiesburg (Oct 26). Please specify on the volunteer form if you would like to help with any of these walks and we will contact you. Volunteers are needed for these areas: • Walk Teams: Help solicit walk teams throughout the state of Mississippi • Vendors: Identify and contact vendors to participate in the walk and the kick-off rally • Activity Committee: Help plan activities relative to the walk and kick-off rally. • Walk Day: Assist in all things relative the day of the walk

NAMI Mississippi has three individuals who recently attended NAMI’s Spring 2019 Training of Trainers. These three completed applications interviewed and were selected by NAMI National to attend. NAMI Basics is signature education program for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. This free course is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or other caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years. The course consists of six classes, each lasting for 2 ½ hours.
NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, peer-led support group for adults living with mental illness. You will gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others, and the groups are led by NAMI-trained facilitators who have been there.
NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a recovery-focused educational program for adults who wish to establish and maintain wellness in response to mental health challenges. The course provides critical information and strategies related to living with mental illness.
NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12 class education program for family members of adults living with mental illness. In this program the term family is viewed from a broad perspective to include parents, siblings, spouses, adult sons and daughters, partners and significant others. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one with mental illness while maintaining their own well-being.
NAMI Family & Friends is a free seminar that informs people who have loved ones with a mental health condition how to best support them. It’s also an opportunity to meet other people in similar situations and gain community support. The seminar is led by trained people with lived experience of supporting a family member with a mental health condition.

namims.eventbrite.com NAMI Family Support Group is a peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. Groups generally meet on a monthly basis but may meet weekly. The hallmark of a NAMI support group is leveraging the collective knowledge and experience of the other participants.
In Our Own Voice is a unique public education program in which two trained consumer speakers share compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery. The program was started with a grant from Eli Lily and Company. NAMI Mississippi 13
SYSTEM OF CARE A system of care (SoC) is an organizational philosophy and framework that involves collaboration across agencies, families, and youth for the purpose of improving access and expanding the array of coordinated community-based services and supports that helps children, youth and families function better at home, in school, in the community and throughout life. Core values of a system of care philosophy specify that services and supports should be: family driven and youth guided, community-based, culturally and linguistically competent, and evidence informed.

The MS Department of Mental Health awarded PBMHR’s Child and Adolescent Services a 4 year initiative, Crossover Xpand. The program is designed to help families and youth who are identified as “Crossover Youth” that are involved with Child Protective Services and/ or the Juvenile Justice system or are at risk of becoming involved with these service systems.

Megan works for A Clear Path (formerly Region 11), the community mental health provider in southwest Mississippi. Her position is that of Mental Health Therapist. Megan’s main responsibilities include providing individual and family therapy to individuals living with severe and persistent mental illnesses. She also completes initial psychosocial assessments that provide a diagnosis and referral to additional services, as needed. In addition to her professional responsibilities, Megan has a broad exposure to many faucets of the mental health field. On a personal level, Megan is the mother of a child managing mental illness. She has played the role of advocate for her child to get accommodations that ensure a fair and equal education. She shows leadership skills through volunteer work and in her career. Megan is active in her community through board membership and service to others. She is an active member with NAMI Four Rivers, on the steering committee and attending affiliate meetings. She attended the Youth Advisory Board Planning weekend in February 2019. Megan was an integral part of scheduling a session of Youth Mental Health First Aid in Brookhaven with the DMH on May 4, 2019. She is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc where she is the Assistant Secretary and Advisor for the Pearlette Youth Auxiliary. She is a board member and Secretary for Community Action Group of Brookhaven, Inc and serves as a coach and Coaching Coordinator for Dr. A. L. Lott Youth Sports. Megan enjoys attending trainings and conferences to help her develop personally and professionally. Megan’s life's work and passion is to help erase the stigma associated with mental illness and to increase access to quality mental health services for those in rural, lower socioeconomic, and underprivileged communities in Mississippi. She has a passion to help empower children and youth to live healthy and productive lives. In summary, Megan is committed to making a difference by serving on boards and committees as well as frontline volunteer efforts.

I would like to be considered as a nominee for an at large position on the NAMI MS Board of Directors for the 2019 Board Election. I am a family member and have been an active member of NAMI since 2000. I have served on the NAMI MS Board of Directors as a designated affiliate representative from NAMI Vicksburg for fourteen years from January 2004 to January 2018, before stepping down to take care of family responsibilities. I have also served as Board Secretary for multiple years and have served on various Board committees such as Nominating Committee, Education Committee, Affiliate Development Committee, Public Policy/Advocacy Committee, Bylaws Committee to revise Bylaws, and the Finance Committee. I worked closely with NAMI MS during the chartering of the state organization and with NAMI Vicksburg during its re-affiliation process. I currently serve on several of the Vicksburg affiliate committees such as Outreach, Education, Membership, Publicity & Newsletter, Public Policy Advocacy, Town Hall/CIT Committee. As a NAMI signature program leader, I have been trained as a Family-to-Family teacher and state trainer; a Family Support leader; a Basics teacher; a Provider Ed teacher; and a Family & Friends teacher/leader. It has been my pleasure to work closely with the NAMI MS family over the years, and I would love the opportunity to continue to serve and to support the NAMI mission as we head into the next thirty years.
