PROJECT 1
PRITHVI CAFE Hospitality / Legacy / Branding Total carpet area: 3,700 sq.ft. Group project Know more about the project..
SITE ANALYSIS To understand and decode Prithvi cafe team visited the cafe frequently. Prithvi cafe’s soul being the people, the best way to understand it was on site observations and conversations. The team also went to a play to understand the relation between the theatre and the cafe as well as to experience the Prithvi theatre. These led to an understanding of cafe as a space and beyond.
CONCEPT In the theatre, there is a term called the ‘fourth wall’. In order to be a performer, one needs to cross the fourth wall i.e. the curtain and then enter the backstage. But Prithvi theatre being a thrust stage doesn’t have a curtain, both literally and metaphorically. In Prithvi, the actor and the audience follow the philosophy of oneness. Hence the audience gets to see a glimpse of what it is like to be on the other side. The idea behind Prithvi cafe is to celebrate the backstage, the hustle-bustle, the conversations, the rehearsals. The aim is to give an experience of the backstage to the cafe audience and give them a space that interacts with people encouraging the conversations within people. As Prithvi cafe invites many artists and thinkers and encourages informal conversations, such conversations lead to something bigger than the bounds of space and time. Hence, the whole area of the Prithvi cafe acts as a backstage for a stage being Mumbai.
DESIGN The purpose of the design is to give a sense of place, community, and interaction by providing different zones which can come together with the help of the design language. The existing cafe area will be transformed completely giving a sense of backstage. The natural light and greens will enhance the outdoor cafe experience. The concept of ‘find your seat’ will be implemented in the space through use of an interactive seating area. A self service counter which could help different user groups will be placed. Overall the design will strengthen the interactions between space and people.
This section shows the interactive seating and the low seating which can act as a stage for open mikes.
The Prithvi establishments have always had the bookstore as an ancillary function. However, due to its positioning it is neglected very often. In the attempt to enhance the bookstore and its experience the team decided to move the structure closer to the entry making it more visible. Along with this a separate area is also provided as a reading zone. There is even a pantry built so people can takeaway coffee and enjoy their issued books in the reading room.
While working on this project we got the chance to understand many philosophies of people as well as the space. Watching a play together in Prithvi helped each one of us to form an individual perspective. Talking and learning about different people involved theatre, gave the project a sense of connection. A place which is built by the experiences of multiple personas, throughout the course of time, could only be designed to celebrate people, which became our guiding star in this journey or should we say the spotlight.

21 FRAMES Adaptive Reuse / Co-living / Branding Total carpet area: 3,700 sq.ft. Pair project Know more about the project..
ABOUT Tehmi-terrace is a heritage bungalow amidst the few last Portuguese bungalows in Bandra west, Mumbai. The bungalow is currently used as a shooting site for movies and commercials. After the site visits, the team decided to keep this function as the ancillary and introduced a co-living function of intern residency.
Front Elevation
DESIGN 21 frames, which is an amalgamation of heritage and present times, will be designed with a contemporary twist to the Portuguese elements. The space could be divided with every floor for different functions. The ground floor for shooting, first floor for co-living and third floor for guest rooms. We as a team believed that the design of site will celebrate the existing language of the bungalow, it will try to enhance the changes done in bungalow by passing time by adding newer elements.

BRANDING The site will be named as ‘21 Frames’, inspired by the 21 different types of windows found in the bungalow. The branding for the bungalow was done considering the different target groups which consists of a website, business card, posters and Instagram page. The navigation and signage are included as part of branding inside the space.
PROJECT 3
MATERIAL INNOVATION Research / Pair project Sustainable cladding made using recycled bamboo and oyster shell waste. Know more about the project..
WHY? THE CRISIS Due to westernization, the customers are conditioned to use existing cladding making them forget the benefits of using local materials. Existing claddings made from cement, stone, ceramics, etc. generates carbon footprint and waste which goes to landfills. This linear systems of consumption affects environment. Our claddings are trying to revive the use of local materials with touch of modern practices, to cater to the existing environment crisis.
FROM OYSTERS TO BUILDING BLOCKS (FOBB) Both Lime and Bamboo are materials used in the construction industry for centuries. Bamboo is a fibrous and lime material that is granular in nature and can generate a porous and breathable material in combination with a binding agent. The cladding is made with the proportion of 35% bamboo, 45% Oyster Shells Powder, 20% Gum . They share the same properties as the other materials i.e. termite resistance and thermally insulating. These can be used in interiors. The fermentation optimized the thermal insulation qualities of the new materials and strengthen the material. As all the materials are natural and obtained from the waste, it creates a new cycle of material use. After living the second life as cladding these materials not only degrade into the soil but enhance the nutritional value of the soil. This third life of the product closes the openloop created by current industries following the principle of cradle to grave.
The FOBB clads not only benefit the environment by reducing the carbon footprint and creating a circular economy by using waste materials, but it also benefits the people by giving a healthier interior environment. The FOBB fulfill the needs of the planet, people and industry at the same time.
PROJECT 4
NATIONAL HEALTHCARE CENTER Speculative / Core program / Inclusive design Total carpet area: 3,700 sq.ft. Group project Know more about the project..
AIM An Indian healthcare center design project. The Healthcare infrastructure of India and the world witnessed an undesired stress by the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic. We a team of Interior Design students propose a design model to reinforce the public healthcare centers and facilitate better essential public health services.
CORE PROGRAM We the design team believe some core features to the space drive the project and bring homogeneity across contexts. The design features strongly aligns itself with community health and communication of health related information. We designed a core program that becomes the first point of contact to healthcare across the country. A general and emergency health facilities are kept central in the program which can be further made flexible. The core program can add features and programs to satisfy contextual requirements.

DESIGN IN A PERI-URBAN CONTEXT The design we bring in the context of Khorabar block of Gorakhpur was planned to responsibly look at the demograph and allow them to utilize the healthcare center within their means. The design material palette is derived from local materials to sustain better financial resources and its adaptability to the climate. The design we bring in also comes from a thought of flexible use of shared spaces. A very important aspect of our healthcare that won’t be ignored is the well being of the mental space. Outdoor spaces and recreational zones adds value to the healthcare center which can be key in redefining certain areas that were neglected. Flow of spaces and adapting the common corridors as a gateway to bring in an outdoor indoor relation with the space.

PROJECT 5
OUTSIDE THE BOX Miniature artist studio / Public space Total carpet area: 1096 sq.ft.
THE IN-BETWEEN SPACE The site for the project was a small open ground surrounded by a chawl, an evening school, a cafe and a residential building in Prabhadevi. The site itself served a great inspiration for the design as being surrounded by old chawls. The structure of the studio was inspired from the same including the materials used. The site, where now the studio was going to be was an informal community space for all the residents of the chawls, it was a playground for children, a transit space for many corporates. Hence the main objective was to retain the public nature of the space while providing the studio for the artist.
THE EXHIBITION AREA To retain the connection people had with the open space and to give a space for the artist to exhibit the space, the idea of open exhibition space on the ground level was born. At the same time shifting the studio on first floor helped giving the artist privacy needed. This space can be the bridge between the people and the artist built on the idea of being inclusive.
THE STUDIO This studio was designed for a miniature artist, with a working space, photography studio, recreational space with a pantry. The idea behind the studio was to create a space that will inspire the artist with minimal style and ample of sunlight, keeping away the clutter of the city and the space. As an artist isn’t bound by time when it comes to creation, the studio would be provided with a small area where he can rest or take a coffee break in a cozy book corner.
