Field Study:

The crowd at times square consists of • New Yorkers, who work there • Tourist

There is a difference in the intention. • New Yorkers want quicker exit from the crowded areas. • Tourist want to spend time.

The area around gets over shadowed by Times square. • The lanes in vicinity are dark and dingy. • They are underused inspite of the overcrowding on times square. This affects the business in the lanes. • Change in the site plan has enhanced the problem further.

Changes in the site plan • The change in the site plan of Times square is that the section of Broadway has been shut down and the space is used for sitting. • This change is great for tourist because they can spend more time sitting in the center space. • The business around gets affected as the crowd movement becomes stagnant in the center.

15

Interview: Photographer 14 Sept 09, 9:45pm Do you like the change in the site plan of Times Square? I hate it. Why? People just laze around in centre, dont go home early and dont spend money Does it affect your Business? Yes, less people walk on side-walk so less interaction. Has your profit reduced? Yes, it has. Did you like earlier site plan? Ya, people kept moving on side walk due to traffic in centre, so more interaction. Where are you from? Bronx Due you like Times Square? No, but I work here.

Interview: Tourist from Oman 14 Sept 09, 10.pm Is this your first time? Yes What do you like about times square? I love the lights and energy. Did you roam around the place? Yes, but I like the view from centre. How did you arrive at times square? By tourist bus. Would you take a chance of getting away from centre to side-lanes? Hmm I dont think there is much to see in those lanes apart from broadway shows I guess.

17

Interview: NewYorker 14 Sept 09, 9:50pm Do you work at Times Square? Yes What is your Time schedule at work? I reach office at 9.00 a.m. and leave at 6.00 p.m. Do you get bothered by crowd during these times of the day? Ofcourse, during peak hours, lot of crowd, traffic etc. I hate it. Is there any alternative escape from crowd? I dont think so. Do you spend time any amount of time sitting at Times square? No, I never get out of my office. Except for lunch sometimes. Do you like Times Square? Not really. Would you come to Times Square with friends or family? Not really Where do you stay? In Queens

19

Define: Problem Primary: The Crowd Navigation The crowd flow of times sqaure is unstructured. These areas surrounding times square are under utilized. They can be used to regulate the density of crowd gathering on times square. Crowd Intention People visiting times square include Tourist and New Yorkers (majorly who work there). Tourist want to explore the area while New Yorkers want a quick exit. Thus based on the intention, navigation can be structured considering the areas surrounding times square.

Secondary: Business on Times Square Being a popular tourist destination Times square has number of souvenir shops, restaurants, food stalls etc. Out of these some are popular while others are not. The shops that are in the shadowed area ( in the lanes around times sqaure) are affected as they are underutilised. New Site plan The section of Broadway is shut down to provide sitting space. This space gives a panoramic view of times square without traffic interference. The result is crowd gathers in center while pavements are relatively vacant. The business on pavement suffers due to less interaction. Thus navigation can be structured by considering small and large businesses surrounding Times Square. 21

Scenario: Scenario 1: Lisa works at an office on times square. Today she is running late, as she missed her G train from Brooklyn. Its a peak hour and Times square is packed with tourist. There are various other activities going on and so crowd has gathered at number of places which leads to further delay in movement. She reaches her office an hour late.

Scenario 2: Suzanne is from New York. She works at Times square. Her day has been busy. She is tired and wants to go home and rest.

She dispises the fact that the moment she gets out of the building its going to be crazy because of the tourist. She wants to find an alternative route from her office to subway station, but ends up taking same route everyday as she is tired and doesn’t want to get lost. She hates the fact that she has to buy grocery for dinner on her way back or she might just take away food.

Scenario 3: Micheal has shifted from Delaware to New York. He has a job at Times Square. He is very excited about the big city experience. He loves Times Square. After office hours he makes sure to hang out at one of the restaurants or grab a drink. He is not familiar with the cuisine options around. He wants to meet new people and wants to know more about the city. 27
