The Chamber proudly serves the four wonderfully diverse communities of the legendary Wood River Valley in Central Idaho. Flanked by the winding Big Wood River, from Bellevue to Hailey and north to Ketchum and Sun Valley, this uniquely stunning 20-mile stretch offers something for all interests and pursuits. I was born and raised in the great state of Idaho but had been away for more than 20 years for my professional career. I spent much of that time dreaming of ways I could one day return to the grand mountains and crystal-clear rivers, lakes, and streams of this beautiful area. My wife, Angi, and our three boys, Gavin, Lennon, and Cash, wanted to find a place where hiking trails were just minutes from our doorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a home where camping and fishing trips were not part of annual vacations, but things we could enjoy every weekend or on slow summer afternoons. There are few places on the planet with such inspiring abundance, but this valley offers so much more. It is a community that welcomes new faces and new ideas. The conveniences we once thought we needed in the big city were quickly replaced by the kind, familiar faces of people who now know our names, and we know theirs. Our boys still enjoy team sports, but now their training includes hikes to dozens of gorgeous mountain lakes. I am truly excited about what lies ahead for our valley in the coming years. As business owners in Hailey, we have found The Chamber to be an invaluable networking and marketing resource for our company. From our very first week in this valley, we were welcomed by fellow business owners and professionals. We experienced the remarkable sense of community that thrives here. We look forward to forming new partnerships with other nonprofits and city leaders who share the common goal of improving our local economic landscape and creating new ways of supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. The special people who choose to call this place home truly make it like no other— to knowing everyone, you think it’s normal to get powder people who care about each other, watch out for each other, and days off work (and school), and you learn that in a small help one another. town, there really are no secrets. When thinking of our fantastic community, I’m reminded of a word my cousin’s wife shared at their wedding to explain her love and sense of family for the friends who essentially raised her— she called them “framily.” It’s a word that perfectly explains our extended family here in the Wood River Valley. We might not be blood relatives, but we are as close as family—heck, sometimes we’re even closer. We are framily— a community of people who look after each other, grieve together when one of our members is suffering, and celebrate when a member has great success. When I had a life-changing ski accident on Baldy in 1989, the entire valley came out to support and embrace our family through that difficult time. While my mother and I spent three months in Denver at a rehabilitation hospital, my father and brother received hot meals delivered daily to our home—something out of “Leave it to Beaver” times. For years after my accident, I would gather all my adaptive ski gear and head over to Baldy (not Dollar, of course, because I was a hotshot ski racer). At the top of the mountain, I would invariably see one of our many fantastic ski patrollers who would smile knowingly and say, “Hi Muffy!” No question they were thinking,

“We’ll be seeing you later!” because for years, the only way I came down off Baldy was in a ski patrol sled. I’d crash and break a piece of my equipment, or I’d have a bad fall and get all emotional, unable to ski or even sideslip my way down. Ski patrol hauled me off the mountain many times; once, they just let me sit in the sled and enjoy the ride down. Thinking back to my youth, I want those friends and fellow locals looking after my daughter. I want them to call her out when they see her behaving inappropriately and notify me of such behavior, such as my parents had when I was growing up here. I want my daughter to have the independence to wander, explore and grow, but with the safety our community offers as well as the supervision and concern of our friends and neighbors. One of the reasons many celebrities, Olympians and otherwise well-known people choose to settle here is the wonderful sense of community that is so rare and difficult to find elsewhere. Here, such people are nothing special—they’re just like the rest of us, free to enjoy the beautiful outdoors we all love as equal and valued members of our community. The mountains and recreational opportunities might bring you to the Wood River Valley, but it’s the community you find here that will make you stay.

Dick Fosbury Reflects on

FINDING HOME … I remember it rained that year, all of April and May, and everyone was complaining about the cloudy weather. It was strange to me, coming from the Oregon climate and constant rainfall in the spring. And I heard the stories of the open winter, the hard-core skiers who traversed Flying Squirrel when there was only one way down Bald Mountain. I loved the pioneer attitude, being outdoors and independent, and sharing the healthy lifestyle. This would be my home, I knew it. … It seemed like people were active all year long. I remember the noon “fun runs” promoted by Bob Rosso at The Elephant’s Perch, and the Ketchum Ten-Milers in the fall, circling around Dollar Mountain through the streets of Ketchum and Sun Valley. I began to explore all the trails created by the old mining roads and the horse trails along Trail Creek and Warm Springs hillsides.

Dick Fosbury reinvented the high jump to win gold at the 1968 Olympics. His technique is now called the "Fosbury Flop."

… I’ve been here over 40 years now—raised a family, built a company, survived the ups and downs, and know the blessings of this valley. I’ve mostly retired from my engineering practice, but I serve on our County Planning and Zoning Commission, the Wood River YMCA board, and am committed to building a healthy community. Our valley has changed a lot over the years, but the core values of the place have held steady.

ince its inception in 1936, Sun Valley Resort has marketed the Wood River Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stunning mountain scenery, clean air and water, and plentiful winter snow to the rest of the United States and beyond. While early visitors arrived by train, air service has become increasingly important to the local economy. Tourists and seasonal homeowners use both commercial airlines and private planes to access the area.

AIR SERVICE FUELS GROWTH

Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey has added four new nonstop flights since 2014, bringing cities served by nonstop flights to seven: Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle. Expanded air service has resulted in 56% more seats and 68% more enplanements. According to the Fly Sun Valley Alliance, the 58,000 new air-travel visitors have generated $81 million in direct spending. The $477 million in total direct spending was generated by all visitors and part-time residents, who comprise 80% of all SUN passengers. The additional travelers are also credited with spurring $200 million in investment in airport improvements, new hotels, and other development.

RESORT IMPACT

Lodging has a $559 million total economic impact on the area, or 31% of total GDP. This includes the direct impact of the cost of 20

lodging and spending on food, entertainment and other items. Sun Valley Resort employs roughly 1,000 people, with somewhat higher numbers during the busy winter ski season and summer months. The resort offers lodging at the recently remodeled Sun Valley Lodge (94 rooms) and Sun Valley Inn (105 rooms), along with skiing, golfing, fitness facilities, a world-class spa, and shopping. The resort has attracted other hotels to the area, including the new Limelight Hotel (99 rooms), which opened in December 2016.

SECOND HOME DEVELOPMENT

Blaine Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4,766 seasonal housing units contribute even more to the local economy, with a total economic impact of $650 million, or 36% of the total GDP in 2014. These second homeowners spend money on construction, home maintenance, furnishings and various other services. Second homes in the area range from modest condominiums to multimillion-dollar mansions.

THE OTHER ECONOMY

The remaining $395 million in GDP includes agriculture, manufacturing and service industries with a national market. Such businesses include POWER Engineers, which employs more than 250 people in Hailey and provides consulting services and engineering design in energy, food and beverage, facilities, communications, environmental, and federal markets. Marketron offers innovative software solutions for the media industry and employs 50 locally.

SUN VALLEY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NUMBERS

Most local manufacturing industries are small, with fewer than 50 employees each. There are 186 farms in Blaine County, with 109 providing the primary livelihood for the owner. The Wood River Valley’s agricultural products had a market value of $38,572,000 in 2012, consisting primarily of beef, hay and barley.

According to the Idaho Department of Labor, non-agricultural employment in Blaine County totaled 11,265 in 2016. Unemployment totaled 330 for an unemployment rate of 2.8%. The largest employment sector was in leisure/hospitality with 25% of total employment. Rounding out the top five employment sectors are utilities and transportation (15%), professional and business services (14%), construction (13%), and government (12%). Direct full-time and part-time agricultural employment by the county’s ranches and farms was estimated to be 392 in 2012 by the U.S. Census of Agriculture.

(2015 pop.: 21,592) is in south-central Idaho, about 65 miles north of Twin Falls. Created in 1895 from part of Alturas County, Blaine County covers 2,661 square miles and stretches from the Salmon River drainage in the north to the Snake River in the south. The central and most populous part of the county, known 1,149 as the Wood River Valley, is part of the Big Wood River drainage. any people are initially drawn to the Wood River Valley by the manicured slopes of the world-famous Sun Valley Ski Resort on Bald Mountain. The nearly 360-degree panoramic view from the summit looks out across a maze of mountains that surrounds the communities of Ketchum/ Sun Valley, Hailey, and Bellevue. The stunning beauty and recreation potential of these peaks provides fodder for the familiar Sun Valley phrase, “you come for the winter, but stay for the summer!” During the warmer months, visitors can access the more than 200 stunning alpine lakes tucked into the landscape’s many nooks and crannies. Knowing how to access these sparkling gems can be a bit intimidating, so we have provided this quick primer for both newcomers and locals alike.

Sawtooth Foothill Lakes

The Sawtooth Mountains tower over the quaint town of Stanley, Idaho, 60 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75. During the last ice age, glaciers cleaved the peaks into ramparts of towers and spires that give the range its namesake skyline. Over time, these conveyor belts of ice left massive, finger-like deposits of rock waste at the glacierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terminus on the Sawtooth Valley below. When the glaciers retreated, these natural moraine dams impounded melted snow, forming a handful of large, sparkling, emerald-blue lakes at the foot of the Sawtooths. Situated at a relatively low elevation of 6,500 to 7,000 feet, these large lakes are accessible by road and are ringed by campgrounds, public beaches, boat ramps, lodges and other amenities. It is easy to spend a day, a long weekend, or an entire week camping, waterskiing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply lying on the beach and enjoying the stunning mountainous backdrop at one of these azure gems.

Redfish Lake

An easy contender as the crown jewel, Redfish is the most developed of the bunch. The historic Redfish Lake Lodge offers rooms, cabins, a fine dining experience as well as casual gazebo food, convenience store, boat marina and rentals, lake shuttle, and a beautiful sandy beach. Several campgrounds surrounding the lake are available for advance reservation (recreation.gov). Casual strolling and biking paths as well as more advanced hiking trails that penetrate the Sawtooth Wilderness round out the recreational options. Alturas and Pettit Lakes

Though less developed, Alturas and Pettit Lakes offer many of the same recreational amenities as Redfishâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;without the crowds. Boat ramps provide access for motorized and non-motorized watercraft. Pettit is ringed by several private homes and has only one small public beach, while the long, honey-colored Alturas inlet beach is a magical place to barbeque and swim on a hot summer afternoon. Stanley Lake

Situated a few miles north of Stanley along Highway 75, Stanley Lake offers campers and paddlers the more peaceful option of a non-motorized lake. Stunning views into the snow-filled couloirs that split the north face of McGown Peak make this a perfect setting for campers, boaters, or visitors to the day-use inlet beach.

White Cloud Mountains – Fourth of July Lake

Beyond the road-accessible lakes in the Sawtooth foothills, there are literally hundreds of high-alpine hiker-accessed lakes that offer beautiful scenery and a bracing mid-summer swim. What follows is an option in each of the five local ranges that is “worth the effort.”

Across the valley from the rugged Sawtooths is a more secluded range known for shimmering limestone walls that reflect the bright summer sun. The White Cloud Mountains also contain a wonderland of mountain lakes accessible to fit and healthy hikers. Fourth of July Lake is a great family-friendly option (1.7 mi./640 ft.) whose grassy shorelines and flower-filled meadows offer a beautiful backdrop to jagged red granite spires that decorate the ridgelines above.

Sawtooth Mountains – Alpine & Sawtooth Lakes

Smoky Mountains – Norton Lake

Worth the Effort

Partly due to its unique geology, the Sawtooth range contains the highest concentration of lakes. Underlain by a vast expanse of crystalline granite, the glacially carved Alpine Lake cirque forms the perfect punchbowl to collect melting ice and snow. Alpine is one of the shorter trails (3.9 mi./1,173 ft.) and provides hikers with a stunning view of a quintessential Sawtooth skyline of jagged spires. For ambitious hikers, Sawtooth Lake is a short walk (.9 mi./557 ft.) deeper into the range. As hikers crest the upper basin, they are greeted with a breathtaking view of the precipitous north face of Mt. Regan dropping directly into the rippling water of Sawtooth Lake! 26

While the underlying porous volcanic geology of the Smoky Mountains does not support many bodies of water, a cluster of lakes at the head of the Baker Creek drainage attracts most aquainclined hikers. Norton Lake presents a steep and challenging climb (2.3 mi./1408 ft.) with a scenic payoff of colorful slopes of broken rock that sweep down to the shoreline. It is possible to loop past Big Lost and Smoky Lakes on the return trip to the car.

Boulder Mountains – Silver Lake

road. While relatively few of the cirques draining this massive front hold permanent water, Silver Creek is one of the few that contains a small but beautiful collection of lakes. The crux of accessing Silver Lake is the rugged 4WD road to the trailhead. From there it is a short but steep walk (1.5 mi./1328 ft.) to the red bedrock shoreline of Silver Lake. Spend some time exploring the stunning but unnamed aqua-green spring-fed pools that surround the main lake.

Pioneer Mountains – Arrowhead Lake

The Pioneer Mountains make up the famous view from the top of the Sun Valley resort. It is the loftiest of the local ranges, topping out at 12,009 feet on the summit of Mt. Hyndman. For some reason, lakes are scarce in the “Pios,” but for hikers who brave the long approach, the rewards are immeasurable. Arrowhead Lake is nestled deep in the remote Wildhorse Canyon (accessed via Trail Creek summit from Sun Valley). It is the most challenging option, requiring a 4WD high-clearance vehicle to access the trailhead and some off-trail hiking to make it all the way to the lake (4 mi./2,062 ft.). WOOD RIVER VALLEY STUDIO TOUR wrvstudiotour.org Now in its sixth year, the Wood River Valley Studio Tour illuminates the community’s creative talent and showcases the work of more than 50 visual artists by opening the doors to their studios. Participants have the unique opportunity to visit the environments where art is created, meet the makers, and learn about their individual artistic processes. The free multi-day event connects collectors with artists for engaging dialogue and provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of working artists. 2018 events include a group exhibition (August 14–19), a public reception with the artists (August 17), and the self-guided studio tour (Saturday, August 18, and Sunday, August 19). SVGA GALLERY WALKS svgalleries.org Every year the Sun Valley Gallery Association hosts a series of gallery walks—special evenings when member galleries open their doors to the public and share the works in their latest exhibitions. Gallery walks are eagerly anticipated by the community and are free to the public. NAMI WOOD RIVER VALLEY nami-wrv.com The Wood River Valley affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is participating in a nationwide awareness campaign designed to remove the stigma associated with mental illness—especially in the workplace. Accepting people with mental health conditions into our work communities is a first step. This decision by business owners creates opportunities for employees to seek out treatment for conditions that hinder their workplace productivity. In life, we all want our families to be successful. That is what we want in business as well. Successful business owners know that when an employee succeeds, the company succeeds. That truism explains why I, as Mayor, have pledged that the city government of Bellevue will be a StigmaFree workplace. In regard to mental illness, stigma is an unwarranted identification of disgrace. In Idaho, as elsewhere in this country, one in five adults (and one in four children) is affected by a mental health disorder. Our colleagues and co-workers, friends, neighbors, and family members quietly suffer in fear of not being accepted or of being devalued because of a condition that should be regarded with no more shame than a broken arm. Mental illness comes in many shapes and sizes—and in varying degrees of severity. For example, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is very common in our veterans who have served our country abroad. Many of us have known a young person who seems unable to focus or has had unexplained outbursts of anger; many school children are being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. Mental illness crosses age, gender, economic, lifestyle, and geographic boundaries. “We estimate that the Wood River Trail sees close to 400,000 visits each year,” said Jim Keating, executive director of the BCRD since 2007. “That makes it the most well-used recreational asset in the area. It connects our community through a shared respect for active transportation and a love of the outdoors.” Beaver Creek subdivision. Over the next seven years, the scope of the project expanded well beyond the initial concept of connecting Hailey and Ketchum. At least eight additional segments of the trail were constructed before the project was finally completed in 1991. In the end, the Wood River Trail would encompass almost the entire length of the Wood River Valley, from the Hulen Meadows neighborhood in the north through Bellevue in the south. The ambitious project was made possible by donations of land or easement rights from the Sun Valley Company, the Idaho Department of Transportation, the Idaho Foundation for Parks and Lands, private citizens, and local city governments, along with funding from a $1.7 million bond issue and grants from entities including the Idaho Land and Water Conservation Fund. A 1991 ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the completion of the trail segments and the construction of pedestrian tunnels that connected the paths into a continuous whole. Today, the BCRD meticulously maintains the Wood River Trail year-round. In the summer, overgrown native plants beside the path are continually kept in check, and in the spring and fall, special care is taken to clean up after the sheep herds that make their annual trek up and down the valley. Once the snow flies, the BCRD’s expert PistenBully groomers keep the snow surface in excellent condition for the area’s many cross-country skiing enthusiasts. The BCRD also maintains TraiLink—an online portal that provides up-to-the-minute information on trail conditions across the Wood River Valley, including the bike path, throughout the year. “We estimate that the Wood River Trail sees close to 400,000 visits each year,” said Jim Keating, executive director of the BCRD since 2007. “That makes it the most well-used recreational asset in the area. These improvements to the trail guarantee the continued enjoyment of an invaluable community resource for years to come. HEALTHY APPROACH TO WELLNESS BY DONALD M. LEVIN, DO

hen I first arrived in the Wood River Valley in the fall of 1976 I had recently completed my Family Practice residency at Wilmington Medical Center and had set up a practice to return to in Pennsylvania. I never did go back East. My experiences in this community and the opportunities that presented themselves made it difficult to turn away. I found that my osteopathic training was well suited to the type of medical practice that became available to me in Idaho. Initially, I traveled to several underserved communities throughout the state and provided locum tenens medical care to those populations. Eventually I began a practice in Hailey, where there were no other physicians with my type of training and few specialists (only one general surgeon and two other physicians handling obstetrical care) to otherwise serve the community. My particular approach to patient care was well received locally; in fact, the community’s openness to an integrated, holistic medical approach was a significant motivating factor in my decision to remain here.

In my view, the Wood River Valley community is especially conducive to an integrated approach to patient care. In general, the local population benefits from this medical approach and from the healthy lifestyle that can be enjoyed here. Both as a medical professional and in my personal life, I have enjoyed many unique opportunities in the Wood River Valley. The area provides us with the significant benefit of a healthy, active lifestyle. The gratification I have derived from living here far exceeds any service I may have provided to my patients over these past 42 years.

WORLD-CLASS HEALTHCARE

... the community’s openness to an integrated, holistic medical approach was a significant motivating factor in my decision to remain here. I discovered that many of my patients shared a strong interest in preventative care, health maintenance, and the value of diet and exercise. This interest has continued over the years and, I believe, contributed greatly to patient health and longevity. Specifically, attention to diet, exercise, and preventative care contribute to patient health in the later years of life. Compared to the health of the population in general, the health of the older population in the Wood River Valley is a testament to the value of diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. There are certainly health-related considerations associated with our high-desert environment. Certain medical conditions can be impacted by altitude (including those of a cardiovascular or cardiorespiratory nature); other conditions may be exacerbated by temperature variations and a lack of humidity. Despite these issues, I still believe that this environment provides many more opportunities for healthy living and longevity. Of course, in a mountain environment, attention must always be paid to adequate hydration, altitude, and temperature extremes. In addition, it appears that the variation in and abundance of flora have created more allergic stimuli and hypersensitivity over the years. Fortunately, these issues can be reasonably managed with medical and non-medical measures. 40

he greater Sun Valley, Idaho, region is blessed with small-town vibes, a big heart, endless outdoor activities for every season, and some of the best dark night skies in the entire world. Look up on any given clear night around here and you'll be mesmerized by billions of unobscured stars littering the sky. Here, shooting star sightings are the norm, astrophotography opportunities are some of the best in the country, and the Milky Way takes center stage as it brilliantly erupts from the southwest quadrant of the sky each night. Viewing the stars is becoming a dwindling privilege for humans across the globe as light pollution increasingly shrouds the awe-inspiring night sky tapestry. A 2016 sky atlas survey revealed that 80% of Americans can no longer view the Milky Way. This number creeps up with each passing year as we continue to build without regard to the types and direction that our lighting emits. We are truly fortunate to have such an incredible natural spectacle flourishing out our backyard every clear night. The towns of Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Stanley, and beyond have taken special care to ensure that the night sky views stay dark. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Years upon years of efforts to minimize light pollution were recognized in October 2017 when the City of Ketchum was officially listed as an International Dark Sky Community — one of only 11 in the United States. This contribution was a major building block in establishing an even more renowned designation; in December 2017, Sun Valley, Ketchum and their surrounding areas received the highly prestigious Dark Sky Reserve designation. You may be scratching your head wondering what this all means. Long story short, the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve designation means that our area has some of the best opportunities in the world for viewing the night sky!

What Are the Basics of the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve? • The Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve (CIDSR) was designated by the International Dark-Sky Association. It is the first International Dark Sky Reserve in the U.S. and the 12th in the world. • The area stretches from Ketchum to Stanley, includes land in four counties – Blaine, Boise, Custer, and Elmore – as well as the entire Sawtooth National Recreation Area. • The total area encompasses 1,416 square miles (906,000 acres). Its size ranks as the third largest in the world behind Mont-Megantic in Quebec, Canada, at 2,308 square miles, and Aoraki Mackenzie, New Zealand, at 1,679 square miles. • CIDSR received a "Gold Tier" status, the highest designation given by the International DarkSky Association. Photo courtesy of The Chamber One of the most popular holiday traditions in the Wood River Valley is the annual Turkey Trot held on Thanksgiving morning, which this year will be Thursday, November 22. The 5K Fun Run and Walk, sponsored by The Chamber, is a great community event and is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. Nearly 600 folks are expected to enjoy trotting on Thanksgiving Day in downtown Hailey, along the Big Wood River and through the Wood River Land Trust’s beautiful Draper Wood River Preserve. The Turkey Trot starts at 10:00 a.m. at Sturtevants in Hailey, located at 1 West Carbonate Street.

Originally opened in 1963 as Dick Alfs Fly Shop, it was renamed Silver Creek Outfitters (SCO) after Dick and his wife sold the store in 1979. It’s the longest running specialty fly fishing shop in Idaho. Terry Ring was a guide for Dick Alfs Fly Shop, and, after being part owner for a decade, he became the sole proprietor in 1989. After nearly 40 years, Terry still feels blessed to do what he loves— share his passion for the Sun Valley area and help people take advantage of all it has to offer. “I feel so fortunate to be here, to play a role in a community I love. I’m still excited about the business and coming to work every day,” he said. CRATERS OF THE MOON Less than an hour east of Hailey lies an otherworldly landscape— Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Lava eruptions 15,000–2,000 years ago created a rugged, lunar-like setting ripe for exploration. More than 1,117 square miles in size, Craters features dramatic lava flows and cinder cones up to 820 feet high. Visitors will enjoy a modern visitor center and a 7-mile loop road to view the landscape. sk a traveling fly fisher their favorite North American trout destination and they’ll likely spill about drift boating the majesty of Montana’s Big Sky country, wading the tumbling pools of Colorado’s steep freestones, or spey casting the sweeps of Oregon’s coastal rivers. Ask that traveling fly fisher where they can find all these opportunities in one location, and they may struggle to answer. That is — of course — if they’ve never been to Sun Valley. The Sun Valley area offers an incredible diversity of fly-fishing opportunities for everyone from the casual novice to the ambitious expert. Time to buy a stack of postcards for Mom, because you’ll have plenty of fish stories to tell after wading our local waters.

WHERE TO GET AFTER IT: 5 CHOICE SPOTS Big Wood River: The local freestone The fabled Big Wood River provides immediate local access to miles of classic, riffle-run-pool trout fishing. Our “bread and butter” watershed, the broken surfaces of the water cater well to the firsttimer or anyone still cultivating their stealth and technique. That said, swift water and lots of structure make for plenty of technical opportunity for the more advanced angler. The bountiful rainbow trout, averaging 12-14 inches, sip eagerly at sporadic mayfly hatches throughout the summer days, often leading into prolific evening caddis hatches. Winter midge hatches will test and improve the willing angler’s skills and patience. Nymphing is productive year-round

and can often produce larger fish. A recent influx of massive brown trout in the river will keep the streamer junky content, no matter the month. And thanks to its proximity to Sun Valley, the Big Wood River is an option even if you’re burdened by time constraints. Warm Springs Creek: A backyard sanctuary Warm Springs Creek is a tributary that meets the Big Wood right in Ketchum, but upstream portions offer a feeling of remoteness just a few miles out of town via a mellow dirt road. The small freestone creek, which runs through wildflower meadows, holds stocked rainbow trout as well as a population of wild rainbows that often exceeds expectations in terms of size. Warm Springs supports bugs similar to those found in the Big Wood, and thus fishes very similarly. Mule deer, elk, and moose frequent the valley floor, and there’s basic camping right along the river for those looking for a brief and simple getaway. Lost River System: Get LOST A 40-minute jaunt over the scenic Trail Creek Summit will take you to the high-desert solitude of the Lost River drainage. Anglers can spend days wading the emerald tributaries and the main river with the Pioneer Mountains at their back. While hatchery rainbows are abundant around stocking access points, fish are relatively scarce. That said, the vividly colored wild cutthroat you’ll inevitably

run into are of the highest quality. Fish exceeding 20 inches aren’t uncommon, and they’ll usually willingly eat an enormous foam dry fly. Covering water is the name of the game, which suits the fisher just fine, as the twisting river frequently drops into small canyons and constantly piques curiosity as to what lies around the next bend. Plus, the watershed holds a smattering of small but mighty Arctic grayling — a rare commodity in the Lower 48. Camping is ample, as are the stars in the night sky. Silver Creek: The legend About 30 miles south of Sun Valley lies Silver Creek. Often hailed as the “crown jewel” of spring creeks in the Rockies, this river gains its fame in the upper section on land owned by The Nature Conservancy. The organization welcomes the public to test their skills and patience while casting to an abundance of plump rainbows and massive brown trout. Songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, moose, deer, and elk frequent the preserve and are often part of the landscape as you diligently work your tiny fly to the gorgeous trout. A mellow gradient offers the opportunity for a pleasant float-tube drift through the clear waters. A plethora of mayflies provide prolific hatches that the fish selectively key in on, and the placid surface of the water demands a fly presentation that sometimes exceeds even the craftiest of caster’s abilities. Still, novice anglers shouldn’t be deterred from wetting their legs in this spectacular river — as fishing often goes, anything can happen. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2018

Salmon River: Sea-run bonus Among the greatest highlights of fly fishing around Sun Valley is our proximity to the Salmon River; its headwaters are about an hour’s drive north of town. At the foot of the Sawtooths, summertime visitors can walk and wade or bounce down the steep, boulder-strewn river aboard a drift boat as they cast stonefly imitations to wild cutthroat trout. While fishing to these waterborne warriors, anglers frequently tie into bull trout that can reach nearly 30 inches. Perhaps the most appealing perk of the Salmon River, however, is that it hosts runs of steelhead in the spring and chinook salmon in the summer. Whether swinging flies on a spey rod or bobbing nymphs on a single-hand, this is a unique opportunity for an angler in the Rocky Mountains. Hook either of these behemoths, and your flyfishing career will be forever altered.

THE SUN VALLEY DIFFERENCE: 3 FACTORS THAT SET US APART The levels of access are unreal. Anglers often get lost in dreams of what lies around the next river bend, only to turn the corner and be crashed back to reality by a fence across the water and a sign that reads, “PRIVATE WATER — MEMBERS ONLY.” But around Sun Valley, the fly fisher can dream on, hour after hour, day after day, bend after bend. Idaho state law designates the land within a navigable river’s high-water mark as public trespass right-of-way. Consequently, once you’ve entered a river from an appropriate access point, you can wade as far upstream or downstream as you like. This, however, is rarely a consideration, because such an enormous amount of our fisheries lie on public lands. Even our more privately bound rivers, such as the Big Wood, have countless public easements to access the water. Not to mention, most Big Wood homeowners welcome the presence of amicable fly casters in their view of the river. Many even maintain a trail for fishermen on the edge of their property. The sun (practically) always shines here. Most locations, even if their fishing season never closes, offer a relatively brief window of tolerable weather to fly fish in. Sun Valley, however, sees an average of around 300 days of pleasant, desert sunshine, which — from the angler’s point of view — means warmer toes in waders and less ice on rod guides. Additionally, as most winter residents are preoccupied with skiing, fly fishermen will find solitude on the river, save for the trout eagerly sipping the surface at abundant winter midge hatches. “Dry-fly fishing in winter?” says the local angler. “You’d better believe it.” You’re right next to an incredible community. When a traveling fly fisher plans a trip to a first-rate fishing destination, they’ll often find themselves isolated at a lodge in the middle of nowhere or trapped by the dull confines of a one-horse town. While the fishing may be spectacular, they’ll usually uncover little to do besides…well, fish. Not so around here. The Wood River Valley is full of epic adventures of all kinds. he commercial real estate market has been taking its cues from the slow, steady pace of growth in the economy. Opportunities abound in repurposing commercial properties for the highest and best use. With Hailey’s population growth—from 5,400 to 8,000 in the past 20 years—and the recovery of the local economy, it’s not surprising that commercial activity is heating up. As Hailey Community Development Director Lisa Horowitz put it, “Hailey is coming out of the recession resoundingly.” The $23 million in building permits issued by the city in 2017 far exceeds the $15 million issued in 2016. Construction continues on a new 8,153-square-foot mixed-use building on the corner of Myrtle Street and Main Street, where Lost River Sports used to sit. The building will contain four residential units and two commercial spaces, including space for a restaurant on the ground floor. At the south end of Main Street, D.L. Evans Bank completed their new building that has been on the drawing board for years. Silver Creek Assisted Living & Memory Care is opening after a few years of construction delays. The Mint, on the market for a number of years, is under contract, and the reopening will provide a venue for nightlife and entertainment as well as another downtown restaurant. Demolition of the county-owned Blaine Manor is finally complete, and the 2.74-acre site is ready for sale to a developer. King’s Variety Store closed in 2017, opening the door for many development possibilities. The City of Hailey is finalizing a Small Residential Overlay District and a Medium Housing Overlay District. If approved, these will encourage development of apartments, workforce housing, and micro-apartments across the entire downtown area. The City agreed to annex a swath of Quigley Canyon, and the 230-acre Quigley Farm development will include 200 housing units, commercial buildings, and a new school. Goode Motor moved to the south end of town to make room for the 72-room Fairfield Inn & Suites Marriott in its place at the north end of Main Street. Phase One includes construction of the hotel, pool, hot tub, and restaurant; Phase Two includes 11 townhomes located along River Street. In addition, the Airport Inn building was remodeled and includes a 16-unit expansion in the building next door. Wiseguy Pizza is thriving in its new home on Main Street, and Bruce Willis donated The Liberty Theatre to Sun Valley Center for the Arts/Company of Fools. This is just a sampling of what’s taking place in Hailey. The cities of Ketchum and Bellevue are experiencing this type of healthy growth as well—all of which is great news for our community.

or three quarters of a century, Bald Mountain, the geographical gem that defines Sun Valley, has been known as one of the world's great ski mountains. It has been a destination for the rich and famous, the humble and the hard-working, drawing weekend ski warriors and dedicated ski bums, delighting and uniting visitors and locals in the shared camaraderie of the mountain town lifestyle. It has also been home to an astonishing number of elite athletes and Olympians. Gretchen Fraser, who in 1948 became the first American ever to win gold in alpine skiing, led the way for generations of aspiring female winter athletes to follow in her bootsteps. In 2014, following the triumphant success of local snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington at the Sochi Olympics, "Our Olympic Ladies" was launched to celebrate this rich heritage. The vision of the organizers has been to establish a Champion’s Row of bronze monuments declaring the power of this special mountain community to foster greatness. Coinciding with the valley’s designation as an official Olympic-Paralympic Training Center for winter sports, the Olympic Ladies campaign seeks to honor seven female superstars, all Olympic medalists, with unbreakable ties to Sun Valley: Fraser (whose completed statues were unveiled in August 2016), Christin Cooper (whose small preliminary sculpture, shown above, was completed in early 2018), Muffy Davis, Picabo Street, Annie Corrock, Kaitlyn Farrington, and U.S. Ice Hockey forward Hil80

ary Knight, who won her third Olympic medal in the 2018 PyeongChang games. “Our Olympic Ladies” will be rendered beyond life-size by renowned bronze artist Ben Victor, Boise State University professor and sculptor-in-residence. When completed, the row of champions will constitute the world’s largest women's monument and will stand in perpetuity as a testament to Sun Valley’s unique legacy and inspiration to skiers, snowboarders, and other winter athletes of all ages. Be sure to visit the statues in their temporary home at the Baldy Base Camp lot on Picabo Street, across from the Warm Springs Lodge. RANCHING: EVOLVED How the science of water is changing everything for local beef. BY ANN HARRISON

mongst the sweeping beauty of Silver Creek and the Picabo Hills, you can find a cattle ranch that does things a bit differently. The two most important things at Silver Spring Ranch, besides the cattle, are science and water—the science of water, to be exact. These priorities, coupled with a deep passion for the well-being of the land, have created a unique ranch that focuses on the health of the land. In the early 90s, a longtime rancher and his team decided to move his operation to Silver Spring Ranch, just a short drive south from the famous ski slopes of Sun Valley. As they had done in the past, they loaded the land full of cattle. But it soon became apparent the land here in the heart of Idaho was different. They began to realize how important and impactful the land and water of the ranch was to everything else that surrounded it. So they removed the cattle and sought answers about the science of water and how they could become more responsible ranchers. Silver Spring Ranch is considered the lifeblood of Silver Creek and its famous fly fishing waters. The ranch sits on six headwaters that feed “The Creek;” known around the globe for its crystal-clear water, abundant wildlife, and healthy trout fishery. The goal of Silver Spring Ranch is to ensure it remains so for generations. Jones believes that how you manage the land is also how you manage disease. The ranch runs small herds with strict data-driven pasture management practices throughout their 3,500 acres. “You let the soil tell you what needs to happen,” said Jones. “Our plans are always adjusting to the things we discover. The crops we plant, the way we feed our cattle, the way we harvest. All of these practices are constantly evaluated and improved upon.” Traditionally, raising cattle has been pretty rough on the land, but the way Silver Spring Ranch is managing the landscape is creating impressive results with a light touch. “We’re starting our own brand of beef by farming differently. Yesterday has taught us what to do today,” said Jones. The ranch is committed to connecting and educating communities with their land management practices and to getting families involved with not only where their food comes from, but also the impacts it has on those around us. Evolution is inevitable and the goal at Silver Spring Ranch. n 2017, The Chamber expanded its reach to include the entire Wood River Valley. To celebrate our new valley-wide scope, we expanded this year's photo contest to include two winners whose photos capture the magic of the Wood River Valley.

The two winners of this year's photo contest, Flaviu Grumazescu, for summer and David Stilwill, for winter, were awarded $500 each in Valley Bucks, and their winning photographs are featured on the covers of this publication. Photos were judged on their originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, artistic merit, and subject-matter relevance to humans and nature in and around the Wood River Valley.
