What Makes A Great School? It seems hard to believe that I am penning this letter as the 14th Head of School at Battle Ground Academy. It is such an honor and a privilege to be associated with such an incredible institution with its history, traditions, and reputation.

Will Kesler with wife Julie and their children: Bennett ’19, Ellen ’20, and Walker ’24

One question that often comes up in conversations about education is, “What makes a great school?” It seems like a relatively simple question, and the answers that are given are accompanied by the usual data and statistics. Certainly the fact that we have had 20 National Merit Finalists and 36 Commended Scholars in the last five years, that 92% of our students scored a 3 or higher on their AP exams this year, or that our average ACT score of 25.7 is nearly 25% above the national average is an indicator that we have excellent students and teachers. Ultimately, however, great schools do something much more important. They change lives. The numbers quoted above might lead one to believe that the 8% of AP test scores below a 3 were a waste of time or that the students whose ACT scores are a bit lower are not what BGA is all about. Of course, we love our high achievement in these areas, but often it is the students who would never have been pushed to take an AP class in the first place if they were not at BGA that is the true mark of the difference our school makes. Great schools are where students are encouraged to become better each day, where ideas are exchanged in positive and meaningful ways, where we learn how to think, not just what to think, where questions are held in as high regard as answers. Great schools produce strong, resilient young men and women who want to make a difference in our world. To many, Battle Ground Academy will be a great school as long as it continues to produce impressive numbers or garner awards in athletics and the arts, but, to me, the true testament of a BGA education is the incredible legacy of graduates making their corner of the world a little bit better for everyone else. I look forward to seeing what these wonderful young men and women will become in the years and decades ahead, and it is thrilling to know that in some small way I get to be a part of that process.

Will Kesler Head of School

Will Kesler arrived on campus in June as BGA’s 14th Head of School in its 126-year history. On August 22, he was officially installed at an on-campus event attended by students, faculty, staff, alumni and a host of elected officials and heads from area schools. Will joined BGA after serving as the Head of the Middle and Upper School of Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany, Ga., since 2010. Previously, he served in a variety of roles on the faculty of Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, Tenn., for 13 years. A native of Chattanooga, Will is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He and his wife, Julie, have three children now enrolled at BGA: Bennett, an 8th grader; Ellen, a 7th grader; and Walker, a 3rd grader. While embracing the great traditions of BGA, he has energetically focused on the introduction of new initiatives, including an innovative new daily schedule and BGA’s one-to-one iPad program. Most noticeably, Will is permeating his “kids first” approach throughout the school. Will sat down with echo to offer insight into his vision for the school.

Will Kesler: Leading BGA Into the Future What attracted you to apply for the position of BGA’s Head of School? For me BGA is a perfect fit and a great blend of my past experiences. Having benefited from an excellent independentschool education and having worked in schools of similar size, scope, and quality, I saw that BGA represented an incredible opportunity to continue the work that I love doing.

4

BattleGroundAcademy.org

How do you balance your family life with young children with the need to have a presence at school events? Luckily many of my children’s events will also be school events, so I get to do a bit of both when I am being a dad. The truth is that it is just a part of what we do as a family, and living right on campus makes that much easier. Just recently I was able to see a Middle School contest, run home for dinner and visit with my family and still be back in time for a varsity event.

There are, of course, times when I have to turn the phone, iPad, and laptop off for a little bit and make sure that we are getting our time as a family to ourselves.

Now that you’ve been on campus for a few months, what has surprised you the most about BGA? It hasn’t really been a surprise, but the quality of the students is just great. They have been incredibly warm and friendly, and as I see all of their accomplishments

from service hours to AP scores, from fine arts achievements to athletic success, I am more and more impressed. That sort of student body only exists if we have great families and top-notch teachers.

BGA is unique in that it has 125 years of history. How do you embrace this heritage and tradition while also moving the school forward? I really think that has already begun to happen in many ways. With an iPad delivery system and a schedule that allows greater flexibility, many of the innovations that we want to make happen are already under way. At the same time, traditions like the Honor Code and the Tug are as prevalent as they always have been, and our core values of Character, Scholarship, and Excellence are still the guideposts of our educational experience.

You talk about BGA offering a 21st century education. What does this mean? The biggest differences are a more skills-based approach, a global perspective, and a collaborative, authentic learning environment. Education “pre-Google” was ultimately about having access to a body of knowledge that the uneducated did not have. Now, virtually everyone has access to the same information, so how we utilize it or interact with it becomes the most important part. Students have to look at knowledge differently and realize that their colleagues and their competition will come from the entire globe.

How does BGA separate itself not only from peer independent schools but also from a highly-ranked public education system in Williamson County? We are unique in the independent school world in Williamson County because we have such great experience in educating young people for 125 years. In addition, we provide a comprehensive K-12 education that offers a broad array of experiences, and our expectations of character and service are in a context that mirrors the college world that most of our students will enter.

Our differences from the public schools are almost too many to list, but first and foremost is our true independence. The ability to educate students in the manner that we think is best for them without interference from other institutions is incredibly important. Standardized testing, one-size-fits-all curriculum, and large class and school sizes are all necessary when trying to educate so many students with such a broad range of abilities. We simply don’t have those same challenges. Perhaps more importantly, though, are the numerous opportunities for our students to be leaders in their school on a regular basis. Our Lower School students have many chances to speak in front of their peers and guests. Our Middle and Upper School students have more chances to serve in student government, as captains of their teams, or leads in a performing arts production. Our smaller scale means that students are expected to be involved in many different areas and the nature of our student body is that they are going to find something to lead. The ability to lead will be a major differentiator in the coming job market, and I truly believe our students will be so accustomed to being in that role that being a leader will come naturally to them.

What is your vision for what a BGA student should represent – both while in school at BGA and later in life? I really believe the school did a great job of articulating that in the “Portrait of the Graduate.” I love the idea that each graduate “carries with him or her an indelible experience that equips him or her not only for success in college, but also for living a life with integrity, courage, and compassion.” To me the end goal of all education is to make our young people better stewards of the world and more compassionate and informed citizens. “The Portrait of the Graduate” gives us a target that far exceeds the already worthy goal of college preparation.

a responsibility to model the good civic duty that we want our students to possess. Moreover, you have to be involved in the community in order to get to know the community you are trying to serve. You have to be willing to listen to what makes a particular school the most attractive option for those families seeking a great educational experience. That sort of dialogue happens best when you are out and about on campus, at school functions, or in the community.

What are your objectives for your first year? Most importantly it is that knowledge of the school and community. Learning the ins and outs of the culture and absorbing the changes that we have already put in place will take time. Probably the most significant goal for the year is the successful completion of the strategic plan. We have commissioned the aid of an incredibly engaging and renowned consultant, Ian Symmonds, to help us navigate the process. It will include a great deal of feedback and a large amount of input from all constituencies. In the end we should have an even clearer picture of who we are and how best to serve our community.

What excites you the most about the future of BGA? I think it is the collective sense that we have a great school that can be so much better and that there are small changes, like becoming more unified across divisions or streamlining our communication, that can have a huge impact on the student and parent experience. Also, there are more systemic changes – like the change to a more 21st century education model – that the faculty and staff are ready to embrace. Right now is an incredible time in the life of the school. u

How important is it for the Head of School to be visible in the community? BGA has been a big part of Franklin for many years, and I want that relationship to continue. As a Head of School, I have

Although Will Kesler is admittedly not a man of pomp and circumstance, there was much cause for celebration as he officially ushered in a new era at Battle Ground Academy. On August 22, 2014, BGA celebrated the installation of Kesler as its 14th Head of School. Students, family, and friends of BGA were in attendance, including elected officials and heads from other local independent schools. Representatives from each division of the school welcomed the Kesler family to BGA: Liz Napier ’23 spoke on behalf of the Lower School, Wilson Parker ’19 on behalf of the Middle School, and Miller Fahey ’15 on behalf of the Upper School. Roc Batten represented faculty and staff, while Eddie Lunn ’67, Chairman of the BGA Board of Trustees represented the Board. Ken Henry, a mentor and former colleague of Kesler’s at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, and current faculty member at The McCallie School, gave some insight on Kesler’s journey from a young English teacher and soccer coach, to becoming more and more involved in leadership roles. Finally, Kesler captivated the audience during his address, using the school’s beloved tradition, “The Tug,” as a metaphor for finding balance both in life and at BGA. After a singing of the Alma Mater, led by the BGA Upper School chorus, guests enjoyed a reception to welcome the Keslers to the BGA family. Board Chair Eddie Lunn ’67 addresses the audience.

“On one side of that proverbial river at BGA are tradition, knowledge of ourselves as an institution, love for the old way of doing things, and on the other side of that river are innovation, novelty, and excitement about the latest and greatest. It is important that we do not choose sides in this tug. It is not two different institutions battling against one another, but two parts of one whole in perfect balance.” —Will Kesler

French Students Take Whirlwind Tour of France

The students proudly display the BGA flag in front of the famed Palace of Versailles.

Middle School French teacher Abby Kropp accompanied 23 rising 9th and 10th graders as well as 17 adults for a whirlwind tour of France early this summer. Their first stop was Paris, where they delighted in views of the city from the Eiffel Tower, climbed the steps at Sacre Coeur, and pounded the streets from the Louvre to Notre Dame. Then, on to Normandy, just days before the 70th anniversary of D-Day, where re-enactors were already arriving with tanks, motorcycles, tents and completely in uniform. About this portion of the trip Abby says, “The Normandy region is always fascinating and humbling...We paid our respects at the American Cemetery and were able to visit the German Cemetery as well...In the cathedral at Bayeux we saw a bell dedicated to world peace, which was to be rung the first time June 7. Less than a week after our visit, it was, indeed, officially installed and rang out, allowing Heads of State from all over the world to hear its glorious sound. As we left Normandy, our hotel owner waved American flags and thanked us for coming to visit. The gratitude and thanks the French still feel for Americans is strong and heart-felt.” Next was St. Malo, a walled city on the western coast. Kids enjoyed swimming in the pool created by seawater, walking the ramparts and cobblestone streets. The following day they arrived at Mont St. Michel; when the tide is in, the Mont is an island, but when the tide goes out, it is connected to the mainland. That night, the group rode to the Loire Valley, where they ate dinner inside a cave! The following morning they visited the beautiful chateau of Chenonceau. The group then hopped on a train to make its way to the South of France, where they visited Monte Carlo, Monaco, and spent time in the seaside town of Villefranche sur Mer where many enjoyed some divine seafood while overlooking the yachts moored just feet away. After free time in Nice to shop or to explore the old town, the rocky beaches, and the casino, it was on to the night market to see local arts and crafts for sale. An early morning departure the next day took them into 14 BattleGroundAcademy.org

Italy, through the Mont Blanc tunnel and to Chamonix, a ski resort town still quite active in the summer. That morning also brought a trip to the Aiguille du Midi, a mountain top with a glass-bottomed room which leaves you feeling as though you are hanging in the air above the Alps. The last night was the traditional Tacky Souvenir Night, where each traveler may unveil one tacky item, less than 10 Euros, found on the trip. “We went to bed laughing, smiling, amazed at all we had seen and done in 12 days and the friendships developed and deepened. The appreciation of

“This experience was life-changing and truly beyond what mere words can describe.” history, art, architecture, the wonders of different landscapes and experiencing another part of the world through our own eyes and with friends were life-changing. Students were amazed that when they spoke French, people understood them. Parents were reliant on the kids which was empowering and a real twist in trust and responsibility. “The group flew home from Geneva, tired, full of memories, suitcases packed with souvenirs, phones and cameras loaded with pictures, and the knowledge that this experience was lifechanging and truly beyond what mere words can describe.” u

BGA Students Experience Life Abroad Through the Sister Cities of Nashville and Franklin, four BGA students each spent two weeks completely immersed in a new life abroad. Students stayed with a host family, where they could truly experience the life and culture of their host country. Jacklyn Abernathy ’15 lived in Mendoza, Argentina, Garrett Merville ’15 and Brenna Kirkpatrick ’15 both lived in Caen, France, a city a bit smaller than Franklin in population, and Matthew Minor ’16 lived in Schwalbach am Taunus, Hessen, Germany. Though their experiences were all different, they each came home with a contagious enthusiasm for discovering a new culture and international travel.

traditional German dinners. Neither Oma nor Opa spoke English, but we were able to communicate through pictures, hand motions, and a good amount of charades. Opa showed me pictures of his childhood in pre-WW2 Poland and pictures from his time in Germany’s military reserves. I remember thinking that those experiences would have been hard to come by had I not been a part of a program that offered a cultural immersion/homestay aspect.

Why is studying abroad an important experience?

Matthew Minor in front of the Old Bridge over the River Neckar in Heidelberg.

Matthew Minor ’16 Schwalbach am Taunus, Hessen, Germany How did you come to the decision to study/live internationally? As soon as I heard about the Sister Cities of Franklin student exchange, I jumped at the opportunity to have such a unique cultural opportunity. What really sealed the deal was the opportunity to live with a family and be immersed in their culture and communities.

What is your favorite memory from the summer adventure? What I will remember most are the two times that my host, Marcel, his dad, and I went to Marcel’s grandparents’ house for

There is no better way to experience a new culture, learn a new language, or build cross-cultural relationships than to live it. An international experience changes your worldview (for the better), and, perhaps most important, pushes you out of your comfort zone. I grew tremendously in the short amount of time I stayed in Germany and am so thankful that I got to experience the German culture, food, and language from “the inside.”

Any plans to return? Not yet, but I would certainly love to! I’ve formed some great relationships and friendships through the exchange program, and would be so excited to see my new friends again. The German students from our program are, however, coming to Franklin for two weeks in September, and they will spend a day shadowing students at BGA.

Jacklyn Abernathy with her Argentine host sister, Mariana Romano, in the sand dunes of Altos Limpios, Lavalle, Mendoza

Jacklyn Abernathy ’15 Mendoza, Argentina How did you come to the decision to study/live internationally? When I learned that Nashville had a sister city in a Spanish-speaking country, I knew I had to apply since I’ve wanted a chance to apply my classroom Spanish for years. Sister Cities of Nashville’s philosophy of living the culture of a city and its people really appealed to me.

What is your favorite memory from the summer adventure? The feeling of independence I got when I first left the Nashville group and got in a car with my host family for the first time is my favorite memory. I had known them for all of five minutes, and I was pretty much terrified, but it really hit me how “real” and different the next two weeks would be for me.

Why is studying abroad an important experience? I realized all the differences in our dayto-day lives, and the experience made me both appreciate some things a lot more about where I live (traffic rules, my own bathroom, etc.) and make me want some parts of their culture to come back with me. We can all learn a lot from each other, and studying abroad helps everyone share a different culture in a non-threatening and creative way.

Any new favorite foods from the region? Dulce de leche and empanadas.

arts echo 2014 Art II & Honors Art II Installation Project

Art installations cause viewers to interact with their environment in a new way. The purpose for creating this installation was to draw attention to an area experienced daily but perhaps no longer really seen. The students’ hope was that by transforming the space, viewers would begin to notice familiar aspects of their landscape as well as the new additions to the scene. With guidance from Upper School art teacher Carol Lea-Mord, the installation was made up of seven sculptures scattered around the quad. A giant squirrel, affectionately nicknamed Barnaby, waited outside Head of Upper School Larry McElroy’s office. He was created by Audrey Collins, Lily Kruse, and Adysen Reader. A large rose with a lady-bug perched on a fallen petal was made by Lexi Baur, Stokes Dunavan, and Kiana Janbakhsh. Sitting on the back of one of the senior benches under the magnolia tree was a giant dragonfly created by Danielle Caron, Grace Johnson, and Tori Thompson. Nearby, a large magnolia blossom made by Molly Anderson, Emily Hopkins, and Sarah Puryear sat on the ground. Ashley Abner, Rachel Brown, and Hallie VanLandingham created a butterfly that was grounded outside Glen Echo. Three maple pods twirled on the branches of one of the trees outside of Bragg Hall thanks to Chad Bramlett and Maddy Mays. The final piece of the installation was a large tentacle emerging out of a sewer pipe located near the science building. Dr. Seyfred is credited with its creation on the sign beside it, but Madeline MacArthur and Cely Turcios were the true masterminds behind the piece. u 16 BattleGroundAcademy.org

Alumni Generously Donate Works of Art to BGA Battle Ground Academy’s arts alumni have been generous in their donations to the school with gifts of their artwork. Bob Short ’44 kindly donated his piece, The Atom Smasher. It was given in honor of George P. Briggs, Headmaster, Class of 1908. Short is a self-described outsider artist who utilizes poetry from the Romantic Period of British literature, as well as scripture and quotations. His work was recently shown at the Tennessee State Museum, and BGA was also excited to feature him in the first Alumni Art Show. Rod Daniel ’60, who worked in Hollywood as a director before exploring art photography, gifted to BGA an archival digital print of his piece Canyon de Chelley-08 from his series “On the Road.” It was recently displayed at The Arts Company in Nashville before its showing at BGA. Both works are now displayed in the permanent collection of the Mary Campbell Visual Arts Center on the upper level in the Agnes Stokes Fort More Gallery. On the ground floor, Claire Coleman ’08 has donated her sculpture, Twisted. Her work has appeared in the Nashville Arts Magazine and won first place in several juried exhibitions in 2011 and 2012. Battle Ground Academy is proud to have such talented and giving alumni.

The soccer team, coached by BGA alum Rob Mitchell ’90, defeated St. George’s out of Memphis 2-0 to complete a 20-1 year. BGA recorded a goal in the fourth minute when Alex Smith scored on the Wildcats’ third shot of the game. Daniel Brown added another tally in the 25th minute. 18 BattleGroundAcademy.org

“It feels great to win two state championships,” said Brown, who was also a key member of the basketball team. “We put pressure on them right off the bat… it’s crazy. This is phenomenal.” Less than an hour after the soccer victory and just a short drive across Murfreesboro, the BGA girls’ 4 X 100 relay shattered its own personal record time with a 48.73 to capture first place in the Division II state track meet, just nosing out rival Harpeth Hall. It was BGA’s first state title in track in 14 years. “This victory was especially rewarding as these were our only four sprinters on the track team,” said Patrick Shairs, BGA’s track coach. “We compete against larger schools that have a much deeper

talent pool to select from. I’m proud of these girls.” All four members of the team, which included Hannah Lawrence, Diamond Battle, Miller Fahey, and Briana Watson ran personal best times in the relay. Briana ran the final stretch and was able to overtake Harpeth Hall to capture the title. May 22 will go down as a great day in BGA sports history! u

Athletic Division Realignment Proves Successful BGA made the strategic decision to transition from TSSAA Division II-AA to Division II-A this past year in order to compete against schools with similar enrollment. The move proved to be a smashing success with BGA capturing three state titles and being highly competitive in all sports. One sports media outlet, SportsNashville. net, compiled a ranking of best athletic programs in the state based on a points system for performance in major sports for the past school year. BGA’s boys ranked second in Division II, which included schools in both A and AA. Division II Boys: • Memphis University School – 242 points • Battle Ground Academy – 195 • McCallie School – 194 • Webb School of Knoxville – 172 • Christian Brothers High School – 170 • Baylor School – 168 • Evangelical Christian School – 158 • Ensworth High School – 144 • Montgomery Bell Academy – 137 • Brentwood Academy – 118 We are so proud of all our athletics programs as BGA continues to build upon its tradition of success.

Lawrence Twins Cap Senior Year with State Championships For BGA parents Jody and Beth Lawrence, the week of May 18 was quite a whirlwind. On Sunday, May 18, they watched their twins Brady and Hannah cross the stage in BGA graduation ceremonies. Then, in the span of approximately an hour on May 22, they saw them both capture state championships in boys’ soccer and girls’ track in Murfreesboro. “What a week and what a way for all of us to finish up at BGA,” said Jody. “For the past nine years, our lives have revolved around our kids’ activities at BGA. To wrap it all up with state championships on the same day for Brady and Hannah was the ultimate fairytale ending.” Brady was an integral part of the BGA boys’ soccer team that completed a 20-1 year with a 2-0 victory over St. George’s during Spring Fling in Murfreesboro. As soon as the soccer game ended, Jody and Beth quickly made their way to Middle Tennessee State University for the track and field competition where Hannah ran a personal-best leg on the 4 X 100 state championship winning relay team. Both Brady and Hannah were captains of their respective squads. Brady and Hannah are now freshmen at the University of Mississippi. Their older brother, Tyler ’12, is a junior at Princeton University. 20 BattleGroundAcademy.org

faculty echo Tom Evans Leads Advancement Team BGA welcomes Tom Evans as the new Director of Advancement. He will oversee the office of advancement, which is the lifeblood for independent schools like BGA. In this role, he will oversee development (fundraising), admissions, alumni relations, and communications. He joins BGA from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, where he served as Director of Alumni Relations since 2010. While there, he was tasked with helping two singlesex independent schools navigate a complex merger. With more than 20 years of experience in the development field, he previously served as Director Development at Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, Fla., and The Latin School of Chicago, where he oversaw a $50 million capital campaign. Tom and his wife, Emily, have three children: Molly, a freshman at the University of Tennessee; Lucy, a freshman at BGA; and Will, a 3rd grader at BGA.

As a native of Philadelphia working at an independent school there, what led you to make the move to BGA?

echo spoke with Tom to learn more

My priorities are simple: to get to know as much about BGA as possible; to get to know as many people within the BGA community as possible; and to help the school attain its enrollment and fundraising goals through the engagement and stewardship of everyone associated with the school. Perhaps those are a bit ambitious but it will make for an exciting and fun year. And I’d like to see my daughter and her soccer teammates win a state championship, but that doesn’t have to be done this school year.

about his goals for the school and how he is becoming a part of the BGA community. As Director of Advancement, what are your day-to-day responsibilities? One of the things that attracted me to the opportunity at BGA was the breadth of day-to-day responsibilities. As Director of Advancement my primary task is to coordinate the efforts of the school’s admissions, development, and communications offices. This allows me to interact with each of these important areas within the school on a daily basis, and to think creatively and strategically about how to provide the best educational program for our students.

24 BattleGroundAcademy.org

After 16 years away and working in several independent schools around the country, I had the unique opportunity to return to Philadelphia in 2010 and work at my alma mater at a time of great change for the school, including a merger and a new name. By 2014, the new school was taking shape, and I felt it best for the new school that some of the “old faces” step aside so that the school could be led by new people. In addition to my looking for a school that was interested in my professional experience and philosophies, my family and I wanted a school and a community with outstanding academics and passionate parents and alumni. I liked the energy Will Kesler was bringing to the Head of School’s office and his desire to see the school thrive. What are your priorities for this school year?

Tom Evans

As someone who did not have previous ties to BGA, how do you plan to introduce yourself to the BGA community? Many members of the BGA community have already been very helpful by opening their own doors to me or making introductions to others within the school community, and for that I am extremely grateful. In the coming months we’ll be getting out more and I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s BGA stories. Additionally, there are wonderful things happening here on campus, and I can’t wait to share those stories with others. u

Paul Brown Assumes Role of Chief Financial Officer Paul Brown, a seasoned financial leader, has joined BGA as Chief Financial Officer. In this role, he will be involved in operations, as well as budget management, reporting, and negotiating with outside vendors. With more than 30 years of experience in both independent school and corporate environments, Paul most recently served as Director of Finance for Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, LA. While there, he established a structured financial reporting system and worked closely with faculty and staff to identify their budget needs. Prior to his work at Episcopal, Paul worked as Business Officer at Charlotte Latin School in Charlotte, NC. He has also worked as CFO for several corporate entities involved in product distribution, sports, and the retail sale of building materials. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina with a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Georgia.

Paul talked with echo about what it takes to keep the business of BGA going. What is the role of BGA’s CFO?

The CFO is responsible for properly reporting and maintaining the assets of the school. Properly reporting assets includes preparing financial statements for the Head of School, board members, banks and others. The CFO also provides timely investment information to the Head of School, board members, and others so proper investing decisions can be made. Properly maintained assets can include ensuring appropriate maintenance on everything from BGA’s most expensive buildings to playground equipment. Through proper reporting of the school’s information and properly maintaining assets, the CFO helps ensure a quality education for BGA students and that the hard-earned monies of parents are used appropriately for the benefit of all students. What are the unique challenges that schools like BGA face from a financial standpoint? Accurately estimating the correct number of students for the coming school year and then attaining a number close to that estimate is always a challenge for independent schools. Everyone is involved in this process including the Admissions Office, Business Office, Athletic Office, Faculty, Division Heads, and Head of School. The CFO has to constantly update the one through five-year budget based on changes in the enrollment numbers. The costs associated with faculty requirements, academic equipment, desks and chairs, space requirements, and much more all evolve around enrollment.

Paul Brown

How does the role of a CFO for an independent school differ from a CFO at a corporation? I’ve served in similar roles for both and find working in the independent school setting much more enjoyable. Being involved daily with students makes you desperately want to provide them their needs. I especially enjoy being around the younger students. During a tough work day, I go down to the Lower School and just crack a smile watching the children. As the parent of a student who attended an independent school, I always try to put myself in the role of our parents, and it helps me see the school from their point of view. How interactive and visible will you be with faculty, parents, and students? I plan to be very interactive. If I were to sit behind my desk all day, I could never learn the needs of BGA’s faculty, parents, and students. BGA is in the customer service business like soda shops of the 1940’s. BGA’s parents give our staff and faculty a wonderful opportunity by allowing their children to attend BGA. We are very thankful for this opportunity. The old sayings such as “thank you,” “is there anything else I can do for you?” should never be forgotten by BGA’s faculty and staff. Like any other business, parents can easily take their children elsewhere. We never, ever want that thought to enter our parents’ minds. I have to ensure our faculty has the tools they need to do their jobs and, to do this, I need to personally observe the students to ensure they all have smiles on their faces. u

Natalie Stovall ’00 Natalie Stovall, BGA class of 2000 and 2012 Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year, is making a name for herself in the world of country music. As one of CMT’s “Next Women of Country,” Natalie has been deemed an artist to watch in 2014 by Country Weekly, Billboard, Digital Journal, Taste Of Country, Roughstock, and Music Times. Her band, Natalie Stovall and The Drive, just released its second single, “Mason Jar,” to iTunes. echo jumped at the opportunity to chat with this star on the rise! Tell us about your experience at BGA. I started at BGA my freshman year much to the urging of my big brother (John Stovall, Valedictorian of ’91). I wanted to go to BGA because I knew the education would be of a higher caliber - well, careful what you wish for! BGA was much more intense and a bigger challenge academically than anything I had ever experienced before. I’m so thankful for the education I received. Did you have any mentors or favorite teachers at BGA? Mrs. Snider was and is the best. She gave so much of her time and energy to helping me in any way she could and was always there to listen and give advice. She spent so much time after school getting me ready for those auditions, and for my entrance and scholarship auditions to Berklee College of Music. She is a huge reason why I am where I am today. Also, Mr. Phelps was always the shining light in my day. He came up to me the first time I was studying in the library and made me feel so welcome as a new student and I never forgot that. Finally, Coach Arruza was my

sophomore AP English teacher. He always did his best to get us to stop worrying as much about the details so we could get the bigger picture of what we were learning. I learned more from that one class than any other single class I’ve ever taken. How were you involved in BGA’s fine arts programs? I did as much as I could! I was in the musicals my junior and senior years, Kiss me Kate and Carousel. I sang in the show and participated in Mid-State and AllState Choirs each year. I also sang and/or played fiddle in assembly pretty much any time the opportunity arose! Tell us about your career path in the music industry. I started playing fiddle at age four, and by age 10, I was working professionally at Opryland in the Kid’s Club Show and the Country Christmas Show. In college at Berklee College of Music, I put together my first band with James Bavendam, who’s still with me today. My parents would let us stay at the house in Columbia during the summertime to play

gigs all over Nashville. Then, we’d play shows throughout the year in Boston at Berklee. When I graduated, James and I moved back home to Nashville and started looking for a permanent band. We found the musicians that would eventually become “The Drive” and have been on the road for almost nine years now, playing about 200 shows a year. Last year, we signed a record deal with HitShop/Warner Records and put out an EP and our first single, “Baby Come On With It,” to radio this year. I’m proud to say that I am the highest-charting, new female of 2014! This whole year we’ve watched so many of our dreams start to come true. It’s been quite a whirlwind. We can’t wait to see what’s next! Did you always know you wanted to be a performer? Yes, I absolutely did. When I was little, Mamma would take me to the park to practice. She knew that if people would gather to listen, I’d play all day. Otherwise it was like pulling teeth! I’ve always been a ham. u

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2013-2014

A M E S S A GE F ROM T HE CHA I RMA N

Dear BGA Community, A major reason for the success of an independent school like Battle Ground Academy is the generosity of its constituents. It is with deep gratitude, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, that I thank you for your support during the 2013-2014 school year. As we move into the 2014-2015 school year with fresh and eager minds and many new faces, there is a renewed electricity throughout BGA. While such a new beginning in leadership can be scary, it can also be exciting and refreshing. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” I hope you will take time to read the articles within our school magazine echo about the people and programs making BGA a special place to educate young people. You will see in each page the benefits of your generous donations to BGA. This Honor Roll of Donors includes individuals and families with various interests in and connections to BGA. Our community is a giving one. Our students are dependent on your generosity, and I hope you will continue to be an integral part of our community and continue to support BGA generously. It is a privilege to serve my alma mater on the Board of Trustees and to work with the innumerable board members, parents, faculty and friends who remain dedicated to BGA. I am genuinely excited about the future of our school with the leadership Will Kesler. I anticipate great things from another generation of well-prepared students setting off into the world to make their mark. Thank you for your ongoing support.

W. Edward Lunn Jr. ’67 Chairman, Board of Trustees

In 2013-2014, your contributions helped us raise over $416,000 in support of the school. By supporting BGA annually, you are a partner in the mission of our school and you help us both set the standard of excellence and meet it. The BGA Fund consists of gifts raised annually (July 1 to June 30) to support current operations of BGA that are not covered by tuition or endowment. Tuition covers only 88% of each student’s education, ensuring that The BGA Fund supports every person and every program at the school. These donations are tax-deductible and are spent within the same fiscal year in which they are donated. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
