HELP PARENTS PROVIDE FOR THEIR KIDS SO THEY CAN BE EVERYDAY HEROES. HELP KIDS BE ALL THAT THEY CAN BE. September 7, 2012 Dear John, Wendy breaks down into tears remembering what it was like to hit rock bottom. She was a single mom who couldn’t even afford to feed her kids. The painful memory is like a wound that just won’t heal. Can you imagine sending your child off to school with nothing for lunch? And not because you forgot, but because you had nothing to send? It’s a nightmare that single moms like Wendy face all the time. “People don’t understand what it’s like to say ‘I’ve got to keep this apple for lunch tomorrow because there’s only one left,’ ” Wendy says. “It’s shameful when you can’t feed your own child, when you can’t put gas in your car, or give your child money to go to the movies.” Fortunately, with the help of United Way, Wendy is starting to put her life back together. And only now, at 46, does she feel she’s really starting to live. “The cards that were dealt to me were not a full house,” Wendy says. “I’m a person that was as low as I could possibly have gone. But I thank God for United Way and [their agency partners ... They were] the light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel for me and they opened doors that I could never open ...” Imagine living each day like this. Imagine having to stop and think about that one apple in the pantry, knowing that even though you’re hungry right now, you have to save it for your child’s lunch tomorrow because it’s the only one you’ve got. ... continued

“People don’t understand what it’s like to say ‘I’ve got to keep this apple for lunch tomorrow because there’s only one left.’ It’s shameful when you can’t feed your own child.”

So many women like Wendy struggle every day to meet even the most basic of their children’s needs. It’s because of them that I’m writing you today. I also wanted to thank you for generously supporting United Way . Your gifts are changing lives! Please continue helping single moms and their children—and other vulnerable groups in Brampton, Caledon, and Mississauga—get what they need to build a better life for themselves. These days, Wendy is grateful to be back on her feet, but she worries that the gap between rich and poor in Peel Region is widening. We live in a fast-growing and incredibly dynamic community. But many families are falling through the cracks, and single-parent families are among the most vulnerable. They make up about 14% (41,350) of our economic families, with most (34,350) led by women. It is Wendy’s hope that people will generously support United Way programs so others like her will get the help they so desperately need. Your gift today will help struggling families make ends meet. You’ll help ensure that kids get a good start in life, that they’re ready to learn by the time they go to school, and that they develop confidence in their ability to do well in life. You give children the chance to be all that they can be. That’s the incredible impact of your gift to United Way. Please act today. You’ll be helping parents access the most basic needs in life — food security and shelter — so they can provide for their kids and build a very different future. Sincerely,

Shelley White Chief Executive Officer, United Way of Peel Region P.S. Please give today to help lift people from poverty to possibility. Find out how at www.unitedwaypeel.org/everydayheroes Give. Volunteer. Act
