Twin Maples Bed & B r e a k f a s t
Our story Set on a farm built in the rolling hills of Northern Virginia, Twin Maples Bed & Breakfast offers its visitors a mix of the old with the new. Imagine watching the sunset while sipping complementary wine on your own private balcony. Imagine indulging in a relaxing massage after a day spent hiking in the Shenandoah Mountains.
Tom and Sherry Burke purchased the land and home in the mid-1800s, raising cattle, chickens and sheep and selling their wares to local merchants by traveling along a dirt road named Twin Maples. Through the following decades, the couple constructed a new home to accommodate a growing family of five. During the Depression the family was hit hard, and to make ends meet, they opened their doors to weary travelers
heading east to the nation’s capital. Soon, word got out and the couple began attracting more visitors. It was this influx of visitors that prompted the family to turn their small idea into a full-time business. And with that came the need for a name. Great grandson John Burke recalled those early days of traveling down tree-lined Twin Maples Road with his wagon filled with eggs and wool, dust billowing behind him, as he made his way to town. The

road, he said, was not only a link between the farm and the town but also brought visitors to the bucolic setting. In 2001, William T. Burke took over the property from his parents and, with his wife, Linda, began a series of renovation projects that included adding more rooms, remodeling the kitchen and adding amenities such as a pool. The original foundation still exists and visitors can find parts of the older home sprinkled throughout the bed and breakfast. The renovated bed and breakfast reopened for business in 2002 and offers more than just a room for
the night. Visitors can select from a variety of activities that include hiking, sailing, swimming, wine tasting, antique shopping and more. Twin Maples also offers cooking classes where guests can learn how to make the famous fare the couple is known for, such as Cheese Baked Eggs, A French Toast Affair and Blueberry Lane Waffles. If doing nothing is on the agenda, then Twin Maples has plenty of spaces where one can curl up and enjoy a good yarn. The front porch offers two rocking chairs, a porch swing, and tables and chairs. The large sunroom

also has two rocking chairs, a love seat and three large floor pillows. Guests who forgot their books can take advantage of the bed and breakfast’s many genres. At the end of the day, guests are invited to gather at the pool for “wine time,” during which wines from local vineyards are served. Guests are invited to take a little bit of Twin Maples with them at the end of their vacation in the form of homemade jams. It’s just a little reminder of future vacations.
