In the Field 2014 Datebook

Working dogs. They are our loyal companions, dedicated and steadfast in their pursuit of our shared passion for the outdoors, the trail, the hunt, the shadow of scent and the wide open fields. They are courageous and bold and their distinct spirit, matchless in their unswerving abandon, inspires and enlivens our own search… even if it is only to wander the paths and woods. Photographer Nancy Whitehead of Sporting Dog Photography captures the spirit and light of the working dog in a way no other photographer has before. She captures the life of sporting dogs with authenticity and reflection in a manner that is true to the spirit of the hunt. With these dogs, and their owners, she travels into the unknown terrain of the hunt—capturing the mystery of scent, endurance and temperament, the essence of spirit. Her images ring of the moment of truth, the substance of the character of sporting dogs within the landscapes and along the pathways they travel. Hers is a photographer’s journey with working dogs of all breeds, their trainers and owners, acting together in their single-minded pursuit of perfection. Her images are a living tribute to their character and their heart.

“It is with the Annie Liebowitz thing: Nancy gets the magic, and truth, of bird dogs that distinguishes these pages by being completely submerged…and the unique photographic voice she has created offers up the truth of that subject matter more clearly and immediately, I believe, than it has ever been offered up before.”

— Charles Gaines, celebrated author and outdoor writer, 2008

L I S T O F P L ATE S PLATE 1 — Boomer. To be out there with Boomer and Cheryl, my two best friends, was a gift I will treasure forever. Boomer was a master chukar hunter. He didn’t boast, he proved it with his actions. That country is mystical. Its steepness and roughness has an appeal to me, not just because of its beauty or remoteness, but also due to the fact that it is somewhere few others tread. When we left the truck you plan to be back before dark, hopefully. The Garmin showed 32 miles that day. We wanted to get back earlier, but Boomer just kept taking us a little deeper in with each find and how could we refuse the lure of the chukar. PLATE 2 — Tall Prairie Braveheart. Jack for short: 8 years old, a very handsome English Setter who hails from Hailey, Idaho, and is owned by Bob Welsh, owner of Wingworks Upland Vests. After running the mountains Jack is patiently pondering lunch break, waiting to go again! PLATE 3 — Valley Quail, Callipepla Californica. PLATE 4 — Wet Acres Quiche LaRayne, call name Maggie. Shot here at 7 years old. Named Top Wirehaired Pointing Griffon of the year by the Northwest Field Trial Council, she has her AKC championship and her NAVHDA championship. Nancy adds: I had the pleasure of following her with my camera in Montana and what fun that was! Owned by Tafford Oitz.

PLATE 5 — Tall Prairie Braveheart. Jack for short. At 8 years old, an English Setter owned by Bob Welsh of Haiely, Idaho, owner of Wingworks Upland Vests. Everyone should own a dog like this if he likes to hunt and watch a beautiful dog travel through the sage—and what a stand up lovely point! PLATE 6 — Magnificent Seven. I had the opportunity to catch this shot while visiting in Alabama where Shawn

Kinkelaar, top trainer/ handler of shooting dogs in the country and handler of the “Top Shooting Dog Award” 8 times. What a breathtaking moment. Champion Elhew Swami “Bama” had a total of 40 wins and won National Shooting Dog of the year three times. Elhew Sunflower had 27 wins, including 15 championship titles. Elhew Hannabell, Kate, all-time leader in number of open champions.

PLATE 7 — Cabin Bluff English Pointers work the quail woods at Cabin Bluff on the South Georgia Coast. PLATE 8 — Valhalla’s Mini Boo’s Legacy, call name Lacy, hunting with Valhalla’s Raising the Bar Reba, call name Reba.

These two are the nicest dogs to hang out with in the house, calm and loving. Reba has a super nose and has pointed birds over 70 yards away. Lacy is a cripple bird-getting machine. If she knows that bird is hit, she won’t quit until she’s got it. Both dogs love people but when you put them down in the hunting field, they are all business. Les Lahring of Valhalla Kennels & Gun Dogs in Bennett, Colorado.

PLATE 9 — Big Wood’s Madame X Superfly, Maddie for short. A retriever who also loved upland game hunting, she

excelled at both. Famous for long retrieves, over the sight of a flat horizon line hunting geese in Canada. Was raised and trained along the river in the mountains of Idaho, and stands as the best and the brightest that ever lived along that section of the Big Wood River. PLATE 10 — Field of Dream’s Elhew Doc, call name Doc. Sired by the great stud dog and Field Trail Champion Slate Creek Doc, who had 55 wins in the 1980’s (his offspring had 702 wins) and was a legend in his own time. My Doc, at 2 years, hunting chukars, huns and quail in Idaho. I call my Doc the “Masterpiece”—he has perfect conformation, is very intelligent, has a great nose, is a great natural retriever and honors naturally. What a great bird dog! Picked as a pup by my 4-year-old grandson, Quinten. I have been around bird dogs 40 years and he is truly a once-in-a-lifetime dog! PLATE 11 — Celtics Life Of Rylee, call name Rylee. A fantastic bird dog who hunts quail, chukar and pheasant in South Carolina all winter. Hunts anything she can find on a farm in Ontario, Canada, all summer. Flies back and forth on a private jet. Really enjoys the life of Rylee! PLATE 12 — Hampshire’s Bailey, call name Kate. She is great in the house and the field, and anxious to please. Beautiful approach to game; steady on point, flush and shot, and an excellent retriever. She knew it all with little coaching. Nancy adds: This was a gorgeous English Pointer owned by Ray Morrissy of Brays Island Plantation, South Carolina, and I loved taking pictures of her!

PLATE 1 3 — Bret’s TicTac Chicken Weasel, call name Tic. He is a three year old English Setter and my best pal. That picture was taken in our favourite area for hunting huns and pheasants. He is a hunting dog most of the time, but, in the off season, Tic competes in NSTRA trials and is on his way to his champion certificate. Nancy adds: Lovely day following Bret Wonnacott, a very quiet gentleman who loves Utah and all its beauty, and is a 3-Time Utah State Sanctioned Duck calling Champion.

PLATE 25 — Intensity. Taken at Brays Island Plantation, South Carolina. From Drew Wahlin, President of the Idaho Chukar Foundation: “Genetics plays a big role in the future performance of pointing gun dogs and this photo shows many of the qualities that exceptional breeding provides. The number one factor for a pointing gun dog is intensity/endurance, followed closely by what some call birdiness and athletic ability. These English Pointer puppies display all of those qualities and a bundle of form. Oh, to be so fortunate to stand behind the point of one of these future gladiators!”

PLATE 1 4 — The Rockbridge hounds, Glasgow, Virginia, left to right: Lead, Omelet, Chief, Denim (in the back), and

PLATE 26 — A Boykin Spaniel taken at Brays Island Plantation in South Carolina.

Tansy. Led by David Conner, a brilliant huntsman who breeds and trains for birdability and consistency. Nancy adds: Loved these dogs and grabbed this shot within one minute of arriving in Virginia. These award-winning foxhounds are crossbred for performance in hard hunting terrain and it shows. PLATE 1 5 — A moment to ponder: 55-60 hounds following the scent at the start of a 5-mile race; all coming straight at

me in Howe, Idaho, at the Eastern Idaho Hound Associatioin Field Trial. The shot of a lifetime! PLATE 1 6 — Springer Spaniels from Alaska waiting patiently for their owner to say “Let’s go ptarmigan hunting!”

Owned by Derek & Sherry Tomlinson, these three are (left to right): Dam, Merry Rose; Son, Hugo; Grand Dam is Sadie. Three generations of well-traveled Master Hunter Ruff Shooting Gun Dogs.

PLATE 1 8 — American Woodcock (Scolopax minor) normally lay no more than four eggs, which will hatch after an average

21-day incubation period. Although hens have been known to re-nest up to four times after eggs were consumed by a crow, skunk or raccoon, their clutch size often diminishes with each effort, ending frequently with only two eggs in the clutch. PLATE 1 9 — Oregon Finchy, call name Finchy. One of Hampshire Kennels’ pups, Finchy carries the elements of the

best of the breed. “How do I know? Well, when you turn an eight month old Pointer puppy loose in eight-plus-degree weather and it fades out of sight with a harness and ten pounds of welding cable on it and comes back about two hours later, minus the harness and the cable…you got a clue. When you cut a Pointer loose in an all-age classic and the last you see of it for twenty minutes or so is that dog going over the third rise, not only blowing the doors off the bracing dog but blowing out the front as well…you have a clue. When you take a Pointer hunting and seven hours later the dog is still busting cover on both sides of your line of march and reaching out wherever the cover opens up...you have a clue. When you call the dog in and find it has been running on a blown pad for God knows how long…and you never knew it because the dog never gave any indication…you have a clue.” PLATE 2 0 — Hailey’s Golden Chamois. A gorgeous Golden Retriever at Silver Creek in Idaho, shot at 8 years old.

Chamois was a blonde beauty born with the perfect blend of confidence, humor, sweetness, loyalty, haunting intelligence, and a penchant for posing. Our connection was profound and her dark-eyed stare penetrated my soul. She was my heart dog. Owned by Sally Kern of Hailey, Idaho. PLATE 2 1 — An early morning of photography with the Sage Grouse on the Lek in Carey, Idaho. The Sage Grouse

Initiative (SGI) is a partnership initiated by the Natural Resources Conservation Service to conserve sage grouse and sagebrush habitat through sustainable ranching. SGI takes a science-based approach to bring back sage grouse without a need for listing under the Endangered Species Act, a decision slated for 2015. www.sagegrousinitiative.com PLATE 2 2 — Friendship. Dogs (left to right): Sea Point Annie Oakley, Slate Brook Ford (National Grouse Derby

champion), Old Fargo, Cleopatridge (International Amateur Woodcock Championship runner-up). Owned by Deb and Jim Kennedy from Etna, New Hampshire. PLATE 2 3 — Wanda. Wanda enjoying a fly fishing evening on a New Hampshire pond. PLATE 2 4 — Those Wonderful Hounds. One of my favorite photos, such dog personality in this one. Taken at the

Eastern Idaho Hound Association Field Trial in Howe, Idaho.

PLATE 28 — Ruff’s Snowy Bramble, call name Bramble. A lovely brown and white female who was our first English Setter

raised from a puppy. A lady setter. She was, is and always will be the best and brightest star ever to grace Shooting Stars Farm. Owned by Charlie and Nancy Metz of Shooting Stars Farm, West Newbury, Vermont.

PLATE 1 7 — Hampshire’s Izzie, owned by Mel Pfeifle of Hampshire Kennels. Izzie—a lovely English Pointer—is from

Champion Elhew Snakefoot and Elhew Sea Coral.

PLATE 27 — Shooting Stars Shadow, call name Shadow. An English Gentleman at Shooting Stars Farm. Brilliant in the field. Also answers to “Lion Heart”—and there is a story here should you wish to know more. Owned by Charlie and Nancy Metz of Shooting Stars Farm in West Newbury, Vermont.

PLATE 29 — Scamp’s Orvis Arctic Rose, call name Orvie. Orvie has both a Junior Hunter and Senior Hunter AKC title, as well as a Working Dog title from the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association. He was the last puppy in his litter that was sold, primarily because he was the biggest puppy in the litter and many felt that he was too big to make a good bird dog. On October 11, 2009, I was able to shoot a true double on ruffed grouse in a simultaneous flush. He brought both birds back to hand. This was certified by The Ruffed Grouse Society who sent me a very nice Double Club certificate. Years ago, we ran into a mature 10-foot brown bear while hunting in Cold Bay, Alaska—which is at the end of the land mass of the State of Alaska and before the Aleutian Islands begin their line through the Southern Bering Sea, to the North, and the North Pacific Ocean, to the South. The bear stood up out of a willow patch that was roughly 20 yards away and instead of doing what nearly all other dogs in the world would do (barking and raising a ruckus), Orvie simply moved over to a point beside my right leg. He leaned up against me and we slowly, very carefully started backing away from the bear. Any other dog would have barked at that bear, and most would have run at it, which only makes a bad situation worse. The bear then comes after the dog, who runs to his buddy for protection. Suddenly his buddy has a large furry problem up close and very personal. Orvie never made a sound and I truly believe that he did a great deal in ensuring that I was alive and well afterwards. Orvie has been around the block with me more than once. He’s not for sale and I would not take anything for him. Dave Campbell in Eagle River, Alaska. PLATE 30 — Tail Running. Tail running the wheat fields of North Dakota with Miss Paris in the early fall. Love those tails!

PLATE 31 — Pheasant. This photo was taken in a special place near the Clearwater River. I can’t tell you where, but look at that pheasant—a sought after specimen for the beautiful tail he has. PLATE 32 — Catching the moment with Harold Ray, world-class dog trainer of the Smith Setter Kennels in North Dakota! PLATE 33 — Sarahsetter’s Saint, call name Saint. He was truly a saint, and one of the most loyal, loving, and gentle setters that I have ever owned. Saint also had the best nose ever—he would always produce birds under the most difficult circumstances. He lives on through his daughter, who possesses all of his great traits. Mark Fulmer from Sarahsetter Kennels in Aiken, South Carolina. PLATE 34 — Sugar Magnolia (Maggie), one of my favorite English Setters, on some huns in the mountains of Central Idaho. PLATE 35 — A hard climb up in Blue Grouse country with Bill and Paris. PLATE 36 — Paris in a beautiful place chasing after blue grouse…a speck in the distance of an Idaho landscape.

L I S T O F P L ATE S PLATE 3 7 — Shooka, owned by Afshin Mofid. He is my best friend, I love this dog. He is not the best retriever and at

times he thinks he is self-employed. But he is extremely good at finding chukars, which is what I like to hunt anyway. The place is special: A bend in the river that is full of birds year in and year out, a place where I forget everything except for the Chukars, a dog, the sounds of my heartbeat, my boots hitting the rocks and, sometimes, my gun going off. A bird falls and the rest will continue…whitchoo, whitchoo, whitchoo…then silence…you take a step and another bunch get up under your feet…grrrrr. Time to make tea, Persian style, my favorite part. Nancy adds: For me, it was a special time to be up on top of the mountain having Persian Tea! PLATE 3 8 — Hanging out with Jerry Havel (left) owner of Pineridge Grouse Camp, Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Dogs

Gunner, Lars and Callie keep guide Earl Johnson (right) on task. PLATE 3 9 — Absolutes Ruff Buster, call name is Buster. An English Cocker fulfilling his genetic heritage by retrieving a

woodcock, for which the breed was named. I call Buster “the Wind-Up Dog … put him down and he just keeps going.” On this day, we put up 27 birds in about an hour and fifteen minutes. A great day. Pretty fine for a young Alaskan dog on his first trip to Minnesota. Owned by Trigg T. Davis, Big Lake, Alaska. friend—the gun was made for him and he died just before it arrived from Europe. He died in a float plane accident on the way to fill an intrathecal pain pump for a bed ridden MS patient who lived in the bush of Alaska. He was the founder and owner of Geneva Woods Pharmacy and Home Healthcare in Alaska, and an avid grouse hunter and Louellen Setter and Brittany dog owner. We were born in 1942—a very good year! Joe Chandler of Anchorage, Alaska, about his best buddy Larry Smith. PLATE 4 1 — The Slam. Paris hitting it hard in the fall while visiting New Hampshire on one of those crisp October days! PLATE 4 2 — A Fox Red Pointing Lab at 8 months, “Ali,” bringing in a sharp tail grouse. Ali is a special hunting

companion to Russell Hollembaek of Delta Junction, Alaska.

PLATE 47 — Lovely point on a hungarian partridge that just all went together well with the colors of Idaho fall! PLATE 48 — Out with Bob Welsh Pointer in chukar country in Picabo Idaho, with his Setter, Jack, and English Pointer, Rosie. The English Pointer was found in Idaho and had been living off the land for 3 months. She was in terrible shape when Bob took her in, well past the point of “almost” starving. She was so scared, they had to catch her with a net; but once caught, she just collapsed. Bob brought her around with a lot of love and she is now one of his favorites. PLATE 49 — Barbaro. Owned by the Smith Setters and Winner of the Gulf Coast Championship, National Pheasant Futurity. Other championship wins too numerous to list and winning offspring the same. Photo taken in North Dakota with Harold Ray. PLATE 50 — A boat, the dog, Kikko, and another glorious morning on the Snake River in South Central, Idaho. PLATE 51 — Just Right Tabatha, call name Tabby; Ransom’s Casey, call name Casey. Both are avid duck and quail hunters during the winter in South Carolina. Tabby has learned to point quail and both dogs are steady and sit to flush. They will wait for hours in a cold duck blind watching the sky and waiting for a chance to bring back their duck. Both dogs completed their American Kennel Club Master Hunter in 2012 and Tabby was a Master National Qualifier. They also run hunt test under the Hunting Retriever Club program and have their Upland titles and their Finished Retriever titles. While they love their hunting and hunt tests, both girls enjoy their work as therapy dogs as part of the Therapy Dogs International Program. They have visited hospitals and nursing homes and are currently part of the “wagon tutors” program in Beaufort, South Carolina. Owned by Jack and Joan Crawford of Beaufort, South Carolina.

A perfect hunt.

PLATE 4 3 — A Woodcock coming straight at my camera. Taken in New Hampshire, perfect early morning light on a cool and misty spring morning. PLATE 4 4 — Idaho Buzz Gunner from Mahoney Kennels in Medical Lake, Washington, call name Buzz. I went out

hunting with Scott Boetgger, his dad and Buzz, and what a great time we had. To be invited to go out with his Dad was special and I have great memories of sitting on top of the mountains with all of them as the sun was going down in the West. Very special father and son time that ended with a successful hunt. PLATE 4 5 — Paris checking out this hole in lava country for huns. A fall day in the lava fields of Shoshone, Idaho, and a

scary moment. PLATE 4 6 — It had taken both of us—chukar hunters and our pointing gun dog—over an hour to reach this spiritual

vista. The climb had our feet sore, lungs surging and legs burning for additional oxygen. It was a step-by-step basalt rock-strewn 40-degree, or more, vertical climb of almost 1,500 feet. The increasing volume of our pointing dog’s beeper collar, and a number of prior points and birds taken on our ascent into this country, increased our adrenaline flow by indicating that we were only seconds away from cresting the ridge into an escaping kaleidoscope of gray forms accented by orange ribbons of color—the form that accompanies a covey of chukar partridge on their elevation descent from approaching chukar hunters and a frozen gun dog that was usually only yards away from the covey’s locked position. The soon-to-be-seen silhouetted gun dog had held this covey of wild birds in place for over 10 minutes while we navigated the dangerous terrain to the dog’s audio location. It would require my trailing hunting partner to get into a better position for a shot. The question now arose of how many birds would be in the covey and from what direction of the pointing dog’s nose the missile-like birds would make their exit? Seconds would soon determine all of our faiths—man, dog and chukars. And that is how it happened. From Drew Wahlin, President of the Idaho Chukar Foundation, Inc.

PLATE 52 — Kikko on the Snake River of Idaho, headed back to the dock after a nice morning hunt. PLATE 53 — Quail on Fence. I took this shot on a sunny winter just after a December snowstorm in Shoshone, Idaho.
