1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS POINT LINE PLANE MASS FRAME AND INFILL
1.1 POINT LINE PLANE
For my study of Point, Line and Plane, I focussed on manipulating triangular shapes into a form which would interact with the landscape. I composed my design for a walk way or footpath within a park or university setting. My aim was to design something which would become apart of the movements of people through the space, something that people come across, enjoy, and move on.
In the total view of the design, I imagined some of the triangular stepping stones to be placed further away from the design on the path, and become denser as the people get closer. It would become a suggestion of the installation to come, and make it blend into the landscape.
The design enables people to walk over, lie on and sit on and is meant to be enjoyed as a pleasant interlude into the user’s day.
1.2 MASS
My design for Mass has taken a more organic shape under the earth, to contrast the geometric, sharp, block-like podiums above ground.
I imagined my design to be a destination for admiration, which is what the large, concrete podiums suggest. It’s a journey from entering into an unknown space through the podiums and through a dark tunnel. The tunnel takes the user into a naturally light filled room, through a naturally occurring hole in the ground.
The space is meant to play with light and dark, and to contrast the way mass can be organic like the underground tunnel surrounded by the earth, or geometric through the man-made design of the heavy, angular podiums.
1.3 FRAME AND INFILL Through my design for Frame and Infill I have explored the way in which the frame supports the infill, and the infill brings the frame to life.
I continued my exploration of folding and intersecting planes in an angular way.
The infill in my design, guides the user through the space and guides their view. My aim was to create an open, simple space with a hidden complexity that unknowingly directs the users motion through the space.

2.1SITE ANALYSIS + CONCEPTACLE
My conceptacle is a simplified adaption of the underlying theme throughout my semesters work. It represents the way the three components overlap with each other and describes the ongoing style throughout my work, using angles, triangulation and composition as its focus.
Through site analysis I was able to best choose a location that would reiterate the concept of secrets. The site I chose is a dead end, set away from the main paths. It’s a spot where people would only stumble across, or Conceptacle
exploring children may discover.
2.2 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT From referencing my conceptacle, my sketches and visualisation began the first steps of my design development. I explored the limits of my site, through my developed language of angular pieces, and the way I could best create a pavilion with a hidden meaning of portraying a secret.

2.3 FINAL DRAWINGS
My final design represents secrets through its abstract design and shattered composition. It represents broken pieces, fallen together to create a curious surrounding, such as ancient ruins.
The pavilion has a different shape from all angles it is viewed from, as a means to create confusion to the v iewer and spark imagination as to how and why it is there.
The centre of the composition holds the place for the time capsule, submerged into the ground and framed by the excavated platform.

3.0 REFLECTION
Through exploring the different tectonics throughout the semester, I have been able to learn the limitations of design as well as it’s broad possibilities. I discovered a style which worked for me and the way in which a cohesive methodology can help the exploration needed for the final project. I believe all of my designs had a part to play in the visualisation and refining of my final design, as I explored the way angles, planes, geometry and typology can intertwine.
I found the medium of charcoal challenging for the Mass project, yet still believe my outcome and intention was helpful and beneficial to learning the potentials of Mass construction and design. Moving on from this subject I hope to expand my skills in digital representations of my designs in order to show the mood and feeling within my proposed building.
