Our Annual Attendance The MENA Travel Awards have experienced growth in enrollments and attendances year after year with exception of 2009 due to the Arab Spring unrest in the region causing the awards to go on hold for two years. The return of the awards in 2012 showed a high turnout despite the challenges in the region. In 2013, the awards flourished with record enrollments and an attendance of approximately 800 industry professionals. The enrollment season has just begun and 2014 awards event is expected to be another record breaker! The attendees are the Decision Makers of the world’s top hotels, management, and brands including General Managers, Presidents, Regional Executives, Owners, and Owning companies.

Key Facts Global Travel & Tourism contributes 9.3% of the global GDP. Tourism growth is faster than the world economy as a whole. The GCC hospitality market expects to reach 28.3 Billion by 2016. MENA region hospitality growth is above the global average. Tourism can have a broad impact both directly and indirectly.


The Importance of the Tourism and Hospitality Sector The industry of Travel & Tourism (T&T), while a specialized sector in the market, is a significant contributor to the GDP of many countries and can have a broad impact as so many people travel. When tourism flourishes, it has a direct and indirect effect on the GDP by boosting the demand for goods and services through the spending habits of tourists and the increased local employment. In the UAE, tourism accounts for over 30% of Dubai’s GDP. Statistically, according to Alpen Capital’s October 2012 GCC Hospitality Industry Report, “…tourist arrivals to the GCC region has grown at a CAGR of 8.5% over 2002 - 2011, significantly above the global growth of 3.7%.” The countries leading this continued momentum are the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar. According to Alpine Capital’s report, the GCC hospitality market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.1% over 2011 - 2016 bringing revenues to USD 28.3 Billion in 2016. The World Travel & Tourism Council’s Economic Impact Research shows that growth in world Travel & Tourism in 2012 was robust despite many economic challenges. • The total contribution from T&T to the world GDP grew by 3.0% in 2012. This was faster than growth of the world economy as whole (2.3%), and also faster than growth of a number of broad industries including manufacturing, financial & business services and retail. • Taking account of its direct, indirect and induced impacts, T&T’s total contribution in 2012 was US$6.6 trillion in GDP, 260 million jobs, US$760 billion in investment and US$1.2 trillion in exports. This contribution represented 9.3% of global GDP, 1 in 11 jobs, 5% of investment and 5% of exports. • Global T&T contribution to direct GDP in 2013 is forecast to grow by 3.1% and is again forecast to outpace growth of the total global economy (2.4%) in 2013. Longer-term prospects are more positive with annual growth forecast to be 4.4% per year over the 10 years.
