The study found that contemporary China's first- and second-tier cities have widespread problems of "defamiliarization" such as residential segregation and lack of neighbor relations. The design is based on two perspectives of space and society, and researches on spatial composition, scale, boundaries, etc. The purpose is to allow people to escape from the metropolis during the holidays to the surrounding third- and fourth-tier cities to relax. This design takes Beijing Siheyuan as the research object to make the holiday space more neighborhood spirit which have open complex, diversifed integration, and spatial sense of domain, etc.It embodies the signifcance of the function of living, and then proposes new possibilities for the urban future residential living space mode.
The Change of Neighbourhood Relations
With the development of industry, urbanization is an inevitable trend of urban development. From courtyards to unit houses. From frequent contacts to social isolation. From spatial isolation to emotional isolation. The loneliness of contemporary young people has gradually increased.

Historical Relationship Between Chengde and Beijing Data Investigation and Analysis of Chengde City
Since ancient times, Chengde has been a place where ethnic minorities live in concentrated communities in the north, and Beijing, which is adjacent to Chengde, is a metropolis where all ethnic groups merge. Beijing and Chengde have been closely related since ancient times.
Chengde is an important node connecting the Beijing-Tianjin-HebeiLiaoning-Mongolia with the unique location advantage of "one city connecting five provinces". The Mountain Resort and its surrounding temples in Chengde are among China’s top ten scenic spots.

With the establishment of the Qianyan and Houyan regimes by Murong Xianbei, Beijing and the Chengde region became one again, and both were ruled by the Murong Tribe.
At this time, the ethnic minorities in the north became stronger and continued to enter the Central Plains. The Chengde area became their rear base for their southward advance; Beijing became their outpost for their southward advance. Both regions became places controlled by ethnic minorities, and the relationship became closer.

The Spatial Function of the Siheyuan
The Enclosed Relations of Beijing Siheyuan
As it is located in the north, the courtyard buildings are basically laid out in accordance with the north-to-south layout, and the buildings are arranged symmetrically along the north-south longitudinal axis, and each courtyard is independently enclosed. Although the scales of courtyards are diferent, they are all combined with courtyards as the basic unit. The houses on all sides are enclosed into a courtyard. The north house (also called the main house), the south house (also called the inverted house) and the east and west wing houses are enclosed by high walls to form an inward-looking courtyard.
Characteristics of Siheyuan
One of the biggest characteristics of Siheyuan is that there is enclose and disperse. Each room is independent of each other, and closed the door is your own private space. Open is a big family, with a common activity center, connected as a whole. The courtyard is the overall activity center. It is located in the center of the entire courtyard, "so that everyone can get in equally easily, so that everyone feels it is the center of the group."

Privacy Analysis
The investigation found that as the number of people in the space increases, the privacy of the building gradually decreases. The design indirectly increases the number of people by increasing the public space and function of the hotel unit, thereby reducing the "indiference" between the neighborhood.

Twenty-person Hotel Unit
It is far away from the entrance and is more private and suitable for a family of four.
Surrounded by plants, the landscape is beautiful, and there are many outdoor venues, suitable for young people to use for parties.
Close to the main entrance of the hotel, there are drinking bars, restaurants, and parking lots nearby. The transportation is the most convenient, suitable for company group building and other activities.

With the development of history to today, it is necessary to show traditional culture in a new look. The frst thing to do is how to tell the traditional story in a new way, and to attract new participants and inheritors. Diferent from the media and other ways of understanding information as an observer, building a space so that everyone can be immersed and participate in it in an appropriate way. This way of experience and participation can be more real and easy to remember .

Lohas Space that Inherits Culture
In order to allow people to learn and activity in the building with a positive attitude, and to increase the opportunities for people to meet , listen , learn , and activity in the design, they constitute other forms or further communication backgrounds and starting points, so we gather here It is the prerequisite of all will. Only by gathering here frst can we provide opportunities to make people feel happy.
Stairs of History
Here represents the inheritance of culture and the progress of civilization.
Plants can grow only when they have roots, and mature fruits will let the seeds drift away with the wind with their own memories.
It is impossible for a building without culture as its foundation to exist for a long time. Even if a building with culture as its foundation is destroyed by irresistible factors, its charm will not disappear.
People review the local history and culture by listening to Sichuan Opera and Nuo Opera.
People of different ages and beliefs exchange history in the courtyard and inherit civilization.
Inheritance Space
The cultural halls for different activities are distributed in every corner of the building complex, which symbolizes that the inheritance of culture should be spread in all aspects.
As the main entrance of the building, people meet here.

Design Specifcation
Outdoor thermal comfort conditions infuence several choices that inhabitants make every single day — to walk to a local shop, take public transit, cycle, eat outside at a restaurant, talk with colleagues, friends, and neighbors or simply go to a park. One of the critical issues in designing outdoor spaces is considering human thermal comfort.Making people more comfortable allows them to enjoy and spend more time in outdoor spaces and be a part of a thriving city. Improved thermal comfort in public spaces not only results in less time spent indoors and consequently, reduced energy consumption but also valuable outcomes emerge such as wellness, enjoyment, and safety. It helps develop a sense of belonging, an identity for the design and increases peoples’ level of satisfaction.
For an extreme climate such as Abu Dhabi’s, the harsh conditions felt across signifcant months of the year certainly reduce the feasibility of such external activities taking place. It restricts peoples’ choices and impacts subsequent health outcomes.
Abu Dhabi Historical Background
The city of Abu Dhabi is generally located on a T-shaped natural island wedged from the center of the west coast into the Persian Gulf. In 1968, a series of important infrastructure facilities including government public buildings, airports, desalination plants and power plants were put into construction. The rapid development of these cities has also accelerated the heat island efect in Abu Dhabi, leading to a series of problems that threaten the health of residents.
Heat Island Efect Prevention Measures
Urban heat islands can afect the structure and function of the ecosystem by afecting the environmental conditions of vegetation growth, thereby affecting the urban atmospheric environment, hydrology, soil, biological habits and the health of urban residents. As an important part of the underlying surface of the city, the ecosystem based on vegetation and water bodies affects urban temperature and moisture through vegetation growth and the evapotranspiration of soil, vegetation and open water bodies.
Site Analysis
Due to the Urban Heat Island Efect, the city center of Abu Dhabi is estimated to be several degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding natural environment. Solar absorption and re-radiation from the surrounding context, including swaths of asphalt parking, existing surface materials, the heat released by automobiles as well as the anthropogenic heat released by cooling the buildings, and lack of air movement result in felt temperatures being much higher than the prevalent air temperature.

MA ARCHITECTURE + URBANISM 2022-23
Name: Nanxi ZHAO
Year: 2023
Location: Shanghai, China, along the suzhou creek
Instructor: Dhruv Sookhoo, Chris Wong
Category: Individual Project
This urban laboratory raises the attempt of increasing access to water in some of central Shanghai’s most marginalised communities. We will look at one of these partially ‘informal’ areas locating in central Shanghai, along the renown Suzhou Creek. In the focused communities, the residing ageing population and migrants are long challenged by limited access to critical infrastructures (water and sanitation in particular) and high population density
INTRODUCTION
The project site is located along Suzhou Creek, one of the mother rivers of Shanghai. Urban waterfront areas are often the gathering zone for multiple functions of the city. On the one hand, the earlier riverfront waterfront space is not open enough and is occupied by enterprises, municipal road facilities, etc., and there is a split between landscape, space and function. On the other hand, the urban fabric is cluttered with centuries-old preserved buildings, and the planning scale has long since become inappropriate for today's modern city with its huge population. As a result, there are problems such as congested roads, parking difficulties, enclosed residential spaces, lack of public spaces and green spaces. However, whether to preserve or to utilise historic buildings, or to find a balance between the two, has been the focus of debate.
With the development of the times, more attention has been paid to the preservation of historic buildings, and there is a clear lack of development and utilisation. The purpose of the existence of buildings is to use and revitalise them, and they should not be shelved like antiques and jewellery. For example, the conservation and utilisation of Shikumen Lilong buildings should optimise and adjust their spatial and functional layout to improve their adaptability and sense of experience, rather than just "repairing the old as the old", otherwise it will be difficult to genuinely improve the living environment of the residents.

CULTURE CONTEXT
Shanghai Traditional Houses Culture
Lilong, a neighbourhood of alleyways filled with dwellings that existed from its founding in 1842 until roughly 1949, corresponding with the presence of the West in this port city, is known by the vernacular name "longtang."
Five varieties have developed from them:
1) the old shikumen longtangs
2) the new shikumen longtangs
3) the new-type longtangs
4) the garden longtangs
5) the apartment longtangs
Multi-generational Living Lane-house Communal Living
Just as fascinating is learning about the historical demographic makeup of lilongs. These residential buildings were frequently owned by a single landowner in the early 20th century, who would rent out smaller rooms to immigrants sometimes and house a multigenerational family. All private property was confiscated by the central government and distributed to families in accordance with their "political labels" after the Communist Party won control in 1949 . Four or five of them with personal capitalist backgrounds were placed in a small space. Tens of people were compelled to live next to one another, sharing services and utilities while keeping a relentless eye on who was responsible for what. This resulted in overcrowding.
A cross-section view of an unmodified individual unit in No. 111 Alliance Lane in the 1940s.
A cross-section view of No. 111 Alliance lane around the 1960s. In contrast to the unmodified unit in 1940s, five families lived in different rooms of the house from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s.
SOCIAL ANALYSIS CROWD DEMAND
Wide age range and more serious hollowing out.
The study community is ageing and hollowing out, with young adults reluctant to return to the community and a lack of vitality in the community in general.
I feel that there is not much to do on weekdays, and it is so crowded on market days that I can't get in every time.
I don't want to work in a restaurant anymore, but I want to contribute to my home. I hope there are jobs that young people like.
Higher number of retirees. Simple group composition.
The study community is predominantly made up of retirees and working people, with a high number of students and some unemployed people remaining.
I would like to have a place to play with my friends, and I would like to know what the old town is like, which my parents have been talking about.
I hope that there will be more activities for the elderly, especially when the market is not in session, it is so boring.
The resident population is predominant and the foreign population is small.
The community is dominated by a resident population, with a tidal wave of foreigners, and strong intra-community ties.
On non-market days, only my neighbours visit me, but I wish there were as many shoppers on market days as there are on weekdays.
It would be nice to work in a less crowded environment, and it would be nice to take a walk after work.

DEVELOPMENT MODEL
According to Ruan Yisan, director of the National Historic Cities Research Centre at Tongji University, there were 9,000 shikumen-style structures in Shanghai at the height of their vogue in the 1930s, making up 60% of the whole housing stock of the city. Sadly, more than three-quarters of the shikumen homes in the city have subsequently been destroyed. Many Shanghainese families had been eager to relocate to newer and more spacious residential dwellings, especially during the housing reform period in the 1990s, as they felt burdened by overpopulation and deteriorating infrastructure. Older citizens have a harder time leaving lilong life behind because they are used to the intimacy and amenities of their neighbourhoods.

MASTER PLAN
Underground Space
Parks and other green spaces should make advantage of underground space in addition to supporting service operations. In their creation, urban parks and regional parks should incorporate underground parking, facilities for culture and sports, commercial space, and other auxiliary services. Improve the effectiveness of the use of space in park green spaces while simultaneously encouraging the growth and use of underground space in the city through stratified concessions, etc.
